How do you save a file so it has the same background color as the background? :S

Save it with a transparent (no background) image.
.png is what you want for that.

Because it still has its white background. You need something that can delete the white, anti-alias the border between white and art, and to save that as a .png, for which I would recommend Photoshop. Unless, of course, a "white box"-less version of the art exists already, in which case you would need something to simply shrink it down. A .gif will work fine, too. For that, do what I do. Copy the URL of the original picture, go to imageshack.com and paste it in the URL section, selecting 100x75 (avatar) for the resize, then submit.
