Pokemon Platinum - The definitive thread: Mach 3 (Competitive Discussion)

Starmie with heat wave, hmmm, useful for bulky scizors? Or too much of a moveslot waste...water/fire/electric/ice seems like excellent typing

heat wave was a typo.

also I'd like to add, now that hitmontop gets sucker punch it'll most likely replace bullet punch on technician sets. Starmie and gengar will have a hard time countering it now.

Lol I just caught a glimpse of it back there...sorry heh. Well sucker punch on hitmontop is pretty cool, I wanna test some things myself once I get far enough...

Does someone who has this game mind testing something for me? In D/P Machamps with No Gaurd could hit through protect with Dynamic Punch 50% of the time. In PBR, it would never hit through protect(along with thunder in rain, blizzard in hail, etc). Some thought PBR was glitched, and some thought that D/P was glitched. I'm interested in seeing how it is in Platinum, since in the VG Showdown that game mechanic(or glitch) ended up playing a huge role in a few matches(Zerowing's Final match in La and Jay's second round match in Orlando to name a few). I would test it, but my Platinum hasn't arrived yet :(

Or it can, you know, Dragon Dance.
It can, yes. Yet getting a x2 speed and x1.5 on water attacks at once beats getting x1.5 speed and attack on Kingdra, since Kingdra will need to invest a heapload in speed in order to be effective enough after one Dragon Dance, while with Rain Dance it doesn't need much speed EV's, giving it room for some SpATK EV's for Draco Meteor...

DD Kingdra doesn't really need rain that much, seriously after DD boost he's already outspeeding just about everything without a scarf, or Deoxys - S. It does boost waterfall's damage though which could be very useful against potential steel switchins.

I think that DD/Outrage Kingdra is almost if not more potent a threat than Outrage mence. Kingdra has no x4 weakness to exploit unlike all three of the other DD outragers, plus a useful secondary STAB. He will be harder to get in than mence due to a lack of immunities, but he does have some decent resists and is lacking that nasty SR weak. Under rain he will outspeed the great majority of scarfers with a DD under his belt, and that may be absolutely nasty. This is just theorymon though, it is to be seen if it will prove as amazing ingame.

If it does prove to be amazing, it's good news for Empoleon who is the only thing that resists that offensive combo. The only method of circumventing Empoleon available to Kingdra is HP electric which means that something else has to rain dance for him.

Kingdra can't be revenge killed by Ice Shard like Salamence or Dragonite or even (lol) Garchomp could, but sadly does not have access to Earthquake to down Empoleon, although that's the only thing that resists his two STABs. Hydro Pump seems like a decent option for the last slot, to pound physical walls hard, even with Adamant.

Someone mentioned how Pokemon almost always get moves that they received in previous games. While this is true for most Pokemon and moves, such as XD Tangela having Synthesis, it doesn't seem to be the case with Helping Hand.

I was really looking forward to a Helping Hand/Imprison/Protect/Filler Dusknoir for 2v2 play.

Leafeon got a nice boost in Knock Off, I think. It gives it a lot of support options to play with, being able to Knock Off items, Wish support, and BP Sword Dances.

I didn't check Dusknoir at Snowpoint I think.

Altaria w/ Outrage makes me happy. Check the Move Tutor research thread, it's there ;)

Although...I hope Cloyster makes out somewhat well out of Platinum. Anyone get any info on him or Shellder?

Did you mean morning sun by synthesis?

My money's on Dragon Dance / Waterfall / Outrage / Hydro Pump with Naughty/Lonely, Life Orb and as many spare EVs in Sp. Attack as possible as Hydro Pump's the only way you'll do any damage to Skarm or Forretress...

edit: 252 Attack/232 Speed/24 Sp. Attack outspeeds base 130s after a DD and hits Skarm for 67% - 78% with LO Hydro Pump. It's also just over enough to bring Hippowdon down in one hit, who would otherwise take Waterfalls and Outrages and Roar you out.
