Pokemon Platinum - The definitive thread: Mach 3 (Competitive Discussion)

Totally jumping the gun since Garchomp has a number of advantages over Salamence (which we all should know by now so I won't go into detail). What this really means is that Stealth Rock will be more difficult to ban in light of an improved Salamence. >_>

Stealth Rock will never be banned. Where are people getting the idea from anyway? =\

Garchomp is banned because of its typing and boost it receives from Sand Storm as well. Salamence is crippled by Stealth Rocks and hurt by Sand Storm. It really requires Roost to bypass those, or a lot of spinning support. All this extra damage means Yache Berry might not save Salamence from a powerful Ice Beam.

Salamence also does not have the lovely STAB Earthquake to toss around. Nor does it have the ridiculous 102 base speed if it chooses not to run Dragon Dance.

I'd like to see damage calculations for a +1 Salamence on an Impish Uxie, who now receives Ice Punch. And can still phaze him with Yawn.
The pixies are getting the punches?!
edit: Just saw the other thread.
Wow...Jolly Azelf will be going around

Well, non-STAB Ice Beams off 235 SpA only does 50%-59% after Yache Berry kicks in, 266 SpA will do 58%-67%. Not to mention that Ice Shard from CB Weavile (68%-80%) and CB Mamoswine (79%-93%) will not OHKO and are in turn OHKO'd by +1 Outrage. Any form of residual damage means it could die yeah. I'm not trying to compare it to Chomp by any means because we all know its appeal, just stating that Salamence can do pretty much the same 2HKOs with DD Chomp could with SD, so hypothetically Yache Berry is an option.

And yeah, I forgot about Uxie. My bad.

Lol I already SRed one, I wanted it as a suicide lead but now it can use a choice band set too...
You just have to dominate every possible Azelfs, don't you? lol..speaking of Jolly Azelfs I didn't SR for one in Diamond but I caught one with like 28HP and Spe IVs but sucky Atk IVs :\.

...and it can used Dragon Dance more than once withouth fear of Ice Beam thanks to Yache Berry, and for Steel type it has Flamethrower/Fire Blast/Earthquake. Garchomp is banned for the same motivation, hence Outrage for Salamence should be banned.

IMO it's easier than now Garchomp come back in OU
(and I think in future will be possible, after tutor Ice Punch and Icy Wind that can be used for lot of pokemon...) than Salamance become Uber too

I think Outrage and Aqua Tail are important moves that allow to raise its own, and already huge, moves...but they won't delete its weakness and problem

Speaking of CBers, think CBLugia can make a comeback?

Aqua Tail, Zen Headbutt, Iron Head adds to its current physical movepool: Earthquake, Avalanche, Punishment (lol), Aerial Ace. The loss of physical Shadow Ball and physical Aeroblast during the generation transition really screwed it over. :[

The new Rotom forms are going to be even better than I expected. Retaining the ghost/electric typing is fine, but keeping Levitate is a godsend.

Spin Rotom can absolutely destroy Heracross, and for that matter, the majority of fighting types who are weak to Air Slash.

Heat Rotom as I said earlier in this thread will be great for SD Lucario, Heracross, Steelix, shit, this thing will even be able to take out Mamoswine.

Cut Rotom will be useful for all of those bulky grounds, and it will be able to beat up every bulky water without question. This can also counter Mamoswine.

Wash Rotom will perform like Cut, but it won't beat Swampert as easily. This could be useful for Mamoswine again, as well as Steelix. This gives Gliscor problems too.

Frost Form, ehh, would be useful on Hail teams. 100% Blizzard paired with STAB Thunderbolt and Shadow Ball from 105 base special attack is likely going to be scary.

I think these new forms will improve to BL atleast, due to having such nice resistances and improved defensive stats compared to normal form. They also gain powerful moves, meaning if you have a weakness to a specific threat, such as Mamoswine, you don't need to throw a Cresselia on your team anymore.

Thank god for that.. seriously, if Starmie would've gotten Heat Wave, the world would've imploded on itself. Or something like that at least.

Regarding Spin rotom: Yeah, it could wreck Fighting types I suppose. But fighters don't REALLY like STAB Thunderbolt anyhow, which isn't much weaker than Air Slash (and is more accurate). Some of them are also dealt with via other moves, such as Overheat or Hydro Pump (here's looking at you Infernape). Not that it isn't USABLE, but it's by far the worst of the 5. Frost might be the 2nd worst, although Wash would be close... I dunno, it's hard to look at a "worst" forme outside of Spin.

One thing I've found interesting that I haven't seen mentioned is that Hitmonlee and Hitmontop got Sucker Punch.

For Hitmonlee it is interesting because he can now hit all the Ghosts and Psychics that wall his Fighting STAB super effectively, most notably Claydol. Adamant LO Lee does up to 60% to max/max Claydol (90% after a Bulk Up??), so a slightly weakened one would have to think twice about attacking him with Psychic.

Hitmontop? Well it is yet another priority move to add to its arsenal, and his strongest option for Ghosts and Psychics. Leaves it open to status and setups though, so it is questionable how much use it would get.

Also, sorry if this has already been mentioned, but on looking at the Move Tutor list I've noticed that Superpower is only given to strong but relatively slow Pokemon if at all. The fastest pokemon to get it is Hitmonlee at a mediocre 87 speed, whilst other fast Pokemon like Infernape and Arceus that you'd normally expect to get it do not. That may go some way to explaining why Dragonite gets the move but not Salamence.

Hitmonchan gets Sucker Punch too.

...Is Sucker Punch boosted by Iron Fist? I know it's technically "Ambush", but it says "Punch" in it. >.>

And Magnet Rise Registeel makes it an even better Skymin counter, since it's Earth Power that we hyped about a few pages ago is now walled by MRRegisteel.

Well say Registeel comes into a Seed Flare and loses -2 spdef...since Shaymins HP will probably be fire if anything, with a LO, too...That's really gonna hurt.
Plus, it has to use Magnet Raise before then. So switching Registeel into Shaymin sounds hard.
