6%! (OU Warstory [my first one on Smogon], Pre-Platinum)

The rules prevented me posting this any sooner...

This is a match that was done over the summer, before Platinum arrived, on Shoddy for the 1st Round of Pokebeach's Official Tournament. I was experimenting with a different moveset on my Swampert, but I decided to go with the previous one for this match, This would have been easier if I had kept the newer moveset.

This match opened up with the complimentary Gengar... >.< Of course, I knew I would do more damage if it didn't carry Focus Blast, So I took the risk...

Porygonz used Dark Pulse.
It's super effective!
Gengar lost 86% of its health.
Gengar used Thunderbolt.
Porygonz lost 56% of its health.

This tells me right away that Gengar did not carry Focus Blast, and even better, I was faster and prepared for the knock out... But, of course...

Phazon-764 switched in Heatran (lvl 100 Heatran ?).
Porygonz used Dark Pulse.
It's not very effective...
A critical hit!
Heatran lost 27% of its health.

A switch was in my future instead of a KO... I'm within knockout range from its attack, so I have the perfect candidate to come in...

That took less damage than I had initially thought... I have no Idea what was going through my head here, but I know I didn't think of...

I seem to get this a lot... Gliscor switching into a Flamethrower aimed at a Celebi... It does just as well, if not better, against a Gliscor.

Props:
  • Gliscor and Gliscor, for having such an intense mid-game fight
  • Porygon-Z, for showing your superiority to Gengar
  • Swampert, for almost winning
  • Umbreon, for bringing that Heatran to its knees
  • Tyranitar, for surviving by 6%
  • This match in general

Slops:
  • Heatran, for falling for my trick
  • Phazon's Gliscor, for getting hax-ridden KOs every time it was sent out, and for setting up Stealth Rock
  • Tyranitar, for starting that annoying Sandstorm
  • Losing in Round 1 of the tournament

Phazon went on to lose in the next round! >.<

Nice warstory-I didn't know Porygon-Z could learn Dark Pulse.

Incidentally, what was your new Swampert moveset that you didn't use?

Nice warstory-I didn't know Porygon-Z could learn Dark Pulse.

The moveset that I didn't use was the exact same thing except with Sleep Talk instead of Curse (which I didn't get a chance to use here). After I started using Sleep Talk indefiniely, it greatly helped the effectiveness of my Swampert... Also, I might have taken less damage against Gliscor in that case...

It's rare that Umbreon ever actually does anything useful. Trapping Heatran to take it out with Swampert is a nice move though, since Heatran is so damn annoying.

I would've liked it more if you didn't give away the beginning >_>. I do have a few small rants, though :/-

1. Why would anyone keep a Gengar in on a Porygon-Z leading if it lacks Focus Blast? I really have my doubts that Tyranitar couldn't have survied a Nasty Plot boosted Hidden Power Fighting (considering that Phazon thought it was a Nasty Plot variant) and not have used Dragon Dance and KO'd with Crunch. Secondly, if this was pre-Platinum, why couldn't he have just used Hypnosis instead? :s

2. Why... exactly would Phazon switch a Heatran in on an Umbreon? First off it isn't doing a thing to it. Secondly, most, if not all Umbreon run Baton Pass. Mean Look or Curse would've been obvious followed up by a Baton Pass to something that could take it on. It's obvious that Heatran was Choice Scarfed. Finally, he had a fucking Nasty Plot Togekiss T_T.

3. Why would anyone keep Celebi in on an Infernape with less than 70% of its health left knowing damn well it's a Leech Seed variant that would fall to a single Life Orb Flamethrower? If you tried to Nasty Plot, Celebi could've either done some damage with Grass Knot and let the Sandstorm and Life Orb wear it down. Celebi could've switched in to rape Swampert and finish off Gliscor >_>. That 1-1 win really wasn't that exciting if you think about it.

Also, more comments would've been nice.

You seem to be overly eager to stat-up. Both your Gliscor and your Togekiss stat-upped past the point where they needed too, which left them vulnerable to KOing. A single Nasty Plot/Swords Dance is usually enough to sweep. Especially on Togekiss, where Thunderwave + Air Slash tends to sweep on its own.

Gliscor because he had no ice fang and resorted to Aerial Ace. Togekiss because he is expecting T-Tar to come in after Togekiss KOed someone and his moveset is Air Slash/Roost/T-Wave/Nasty Plot which T-Tar resists, but T-Tar ended up being Jolly 252 speed which was faster than minimal speed togekiss.

Overall it was a good battle but lacked commentary. I believe that you should have won but you were haxed by sand veil which lost you the match.

1. P-Z leads are usually scarf and he probably knows that Gengar will survive a dark pulse or decided to risk it incase it nasty plots instead.

2. Lack of information, the Heatran user thought Umbreon was an annoyer instead of trap passer and switched in Heatran to take the expected Toxic. This was explained in the commentary I believe.

3. Not sure about this one..I assume its because at that point the opponent gives up knowing he lost. It was Swampert+Infernape vs Celebi+Gliscor+T-tar. All of those are KOed by standard infernape. Perhaps he was praying for sand veil hax? He still had a fighting chance if he attempts to outstall infernape by switching between T-Tar/Celebi and maybe Gliscor to take close combat.

Not a bad story, but I definitely agree in that you didn't need to overdo the stat upping thing.

WTF???? T-tar outspeeds Togekiss??? What did you do to it, run a negative nature?

Using Umbreon was effective. It's rare that the traditional trap-pass still works, but it was done well here, especially as Heatran would have given you problems.

I think you overdid it Gliscor vs Gliscor, i get the GLiscor switching into FLamethrowers too lol. overall good Story.

Yeah, what the other people said.

The first thing I thought of though when you successfully trapped Heatran though was: "Oh ok, it should be game right there if the heatran is scarfed decides to use Earth Power," (and it did) since I see that you had two flyers... But instead you baton passed to Swampert for the quick kill. If you had baton passed to Gliscor (or Togekiss, but Gliscor's better in this case), it would have got its +6 with no damage from Earth Power, and... yah, it would have been over fast.
