Getting into Rap/Hip Hop

When it comes to music, I am pretty open minded. I listen to all types, from indie to metal to electronica to classical. As much as I love music and poetry though, I never really delved into a genre that is known for its poetry...

Rap/Hip Hop

There are a total of TWO rap artists that I listen to consistently. Obligatory N.W.A, Straight Outta Compton is one, with little attention to any of the other albums. The other rap artist is Saul Williams, an excellent poet who criticizes the image African Americans have made for themselves and the music industry. Both his self titled album and Amethyst Rock Star are albums I listen to quite often.

I stayed away from Rap/Hip Hop for the most part because of what you see in the mainstream and because I was never really shown anything good. These bullshit, selfish, greedy, blinged out "gangsters" plague the airwaves and the T.V. These "artists" only concentrated on the hooks and the beats to make people dance (you know what, I wouldn't even call bullshit like that dancing), and the way the song sounds on a ringtone (that weird electronic voice comes out perfectly from a phone's little speaker, and many artists try to capitalize on that). There was no substance to the lyrics, it was all about a single, and the image. The whole mentality of "it's cool to be ghetto" has ruined them and the industry. Rap music originated in the poverty stricken areas. Those people dressed a certain way and spoke in a language that was unique to them and gave them a voice. The spoken word was very anti-establishment. The roots of Rap have been completely thrown out the window.

Whenever I ask for good (subjective, I know) rap/hip hop artists, I get names thrown around like Sage Francis, A Tribe Called Quest, Immortal Technique, Jedi Mind Tricks, and Mos Def. I ask of you, rap fans of Smogon, who are some rap artists that you listen to, what albums would be good to buy, what is your opinion on rap music itself and the industry, and anything else related to the art of rap.

My favorite album is The Black Album by Jay-Z. While it does have the A-Typical rap hits on it like any other popular artist it definitely has some sleeper songs that are fantastic and show Jay's ability to go outside the box in his own unique way.

Fort Minor is worth a look if you want something different.

I'm not usually a rap fan but I do like Immortal Technique. Yes, he's got a bit of the usual "I'm the hardest nigga ever" going on but other than that he's got somewhat intelligent lyrics. He plays with words amazingly and is a great storyteller. He's got a heavy socialist bent, so if that bothers you then I might stay clear, but other than that I'd look him up.

Songs to look for would be The Prophecy, Dance with the Devil, or Freedom of Speech.

I like Nas quite a bit. Illmatic is possibly the best rap album ever.

The Game's first few albums are the closest you'll find to NWA anymore if that's what you're into

Immortal Technique is my top 5 rappers, Immortal Technique - No me Importa (my current user title), and many more, such as Dance of the Devil as well. If you want to listen to real rap, I would suggest listening to Houston rap, it's probably some of the best rap ever made, if not the best. If you want something for starters, and you like lyrics a lot, I would suggest listening to Lupe Fiasco and Cunnin Lynguists.

As previously mentioned Immortal Technique, Rakim, and this little group called WU TANG CLAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

only listen to real hip hop, not overproduced, repetitive, no talent, shiet. Anything on the radio or t.v. today is not listenable. Underground is where you fine true lyrical technicians like BIG(not so much), Canabis, Ill Bill, Necro, Tribe, and more that I don't feel like listing.

Jay-Z is certainly off the list. He is boring as hell and terribly overrated.

IMO if you are going to delve into a genre it might as well be metal.

if you like poetry then listen to pretty much anything anticon. lol

its all spoken word to some sick beats, a little artfag but no doubt excellent (foreys among others will agree______)

clouddead/greenthink/why? (why's solo stuff is much more folky but if you like 'indie' then it should be one of your faves)/doseone's solo albums (or with boom bip)/lots of other collaborations

ive heard good things about deep puddle dynamics as well as a couple others but never listened to them, but if its anticon. its probably good

Those two groups are old school, but they're still nice to listen to.

I usually listen to Lil Wayne and 50 Cent. T.I. is also a great rapper. T-Pain is another notable rapper, but he has kind of a mix between R&B and rap.

These are all exceptional albums. The categories are ordered from most accessible -> least accessible. If you find yourself intrigued by jams on the oldschool end of the spectrum, PM me and I can send you some ultra rare LPs 8-D

Necro and Ill Bill might be to hardcore to listen to when you first get into Hip-Hop, but they're bad ass nonetheless. The names you listed in your 1st post are sick MCs from there you can probably get a sense of what hip hop is but if you need more of a kick I'm here to help.

Let me start of by saying mainstream inst all bad. Guys like Kanye West, Eminem, Lil Wayne (yes Lil Wayne has dope lyrics), The Game, Nas, Jay-Z and T.I are all good examples of good mainstream hip hop. All the guys I listed get down with Lyrics. The best thing I like about mainstream though is that most of the time they have crazier beats than underground stuff. Like the song Flashing Lights has one the best, if not the best beat of all time (imo). Basically what im trying to say is don't get into the "If someone has heard of x then x isn't very good" mentality.

We all know underground is good, so I'll just point out the shit I like.

Jedi Mind Tricks:
Dope. Vinnie Paz and Jus Allah get down with their unique sounding voices. Their music ranges from satanic sacrifices to Muslim teachings. If i would describe them in one word it would be raw.

Notable songs: Death March (my favorite), World War (slow beat but really deep lyrics), Divide and Conquer [Jus Allah solo] (Savage lyrics, you can feel anger in every line.)

Immortal technique:
I'm not usually a rap fan but I do like Immortal Technique. Yes, he's got a bit of the usual "I'm the hardest nigga ever" going on but other than that he's got somewhat intelligent lyrics. He plays with words amazingly and is a great storyteller. He's got a heavy socialist bent, so if that bothers you then I might stay clear, but other than that I'd look him up.

Notable Songs: Revolutionary (self explanatory talks about revolution), Black out Special ( he makes the sickest metaphors and similes it will make you laugh and think at the same time). You should check out his battles they're pretty rare to get but its gold.

Typical Cats:

Another one of my favorite groups. These guys bust out good beats and good lyrics. They rap fast Most of their songs are about graffiti.I like them because they link their rhymes is the most unique way and they have a heavy Jazz background which is notable in their beats.

Notable Songs: Manhattan Project (best graffiti song ever), Take a Number (A good example of their Jazz infused songs good lyrics too).

Visionaries:
LA base hip hop im mostly listening to these guys now. These guys have a more positive message then the usual group. Songs about love, union and "divining" are typical. They scratch like gods and so some of the members joined another group titled Beat Junkies.

Notable Songs: LA Fresh (best song by them imo. Basically the essence of LA), Pangaea ( talks about union and how dividing is bad), I Love hip hop (just talks bout how much they like hip hop).

tl;dr

EDIT: Holy shit Dr. Octagon kicks ass sounds like a fusion of MF Doom and Visionaries.

You guys are the best. I might have to get some money together and make another trip to Amoeba Records.

Basically what im trying to say is don't get into the "If someone has heard of x then x isn't very good" mentality.

If I came off as such in the little third paragraph rant, I didn't mean to be. All that "if someone else likes it, then I can't like it" or the "I liked this band first" idiocy is stupid to me. I'm mature enough to like a band or artist solely on their music, nothing about their popularity or anything. It's just that the stuff you see in the mainstream that is obviously bad is everywhere, and it turns me off towards the genre (and it is not only rap/hip hop that does it).

i was having this problem a couple months ago dude!

here are some albums you should get:

Wu Tang Clan - Enter the Wu: 36 Chambers

that is essential

um

The Cool Kids - The Bake Sale EP
The Fugees - The Score
A Tribe Called Quest - The Low End Theory
Clipse - Hell Hath No Fury
GZA - Liquid Swords

these are all enjoyable records

Del Tha Funkee Homosapien, especially in Deltron 3030. The best rap you will ever hear in your life.

Feel like rap has lost its roots? Del takes it in a new direction, with his raps about competing in the intergalactic rap competition, creating a computer virus to wipe out the far-futuristic society the album is set in, and fighting the Man in general in that society.

I thought rap absolutely sucked and was hopeless as an art form, until I heard that and Dr. Octagon.

As someone who generally doesnt like rap, and for a lot of the reasons you said, I'd like to recommend Outkast.

Aquemini is the only album I have, but it's awesome..

Have a nice day.

Damn you Echo, I wanted to say Atmosphere first.

To echo what other people have said:
Jedi Mind Tricks - fucking rule, their beats are incredible
Atmosphere - I think Slug is the best rapper nowadays lyrically, get God Loves Ugly and enjoy
NaS - oldie but goodie, It Was Written is what turned me on to rap and is still my favorite rap album
Outkast - they take rap in all sorts of new directions, never afraid to experiment

I'll add to the mix:
Swollen Members - get it all

I'd really recommend Kanye, Outkast and Jedi Mind Tricks, though I'm sure people have already recommended them.

Kanye for genius lyrics and combination work, Outkast for the unique way their "experiments and need to different" actually works, aesthetically and purely entertainment wise, and Jedi Mind Tricks cause..well I don't really know why besides I love listening to them lol.

Don't let the stereotypes about rap and hip hop get you btw, there are a shitload of haters who "know alot about music" and have fun hating on rap like northern city boys like hating on country ;)

If you're looking for some old school beats, I definitely recommend Run DMC, Tupac and Biggie Smalls. Their beats were elegant in a rough manner (especially Tupac), and I think you might be able to appreciate Kanye and Outkast a bit more if you listen to some Tupac and Biggie.

EDIT: btw, I'm REALLY into Kanye's new single, Love Lock Down. I'd recommend listening to his Graduation, Late Registration and College Drop Out albums first, but keep an eye out for 808s and Heartbreak...if Love Lock Down is any indicator, it's going to be off the charts.

^don't make stupid posts.

Here's some album's worth checking out. can i add download links from rs or something? not sure..

Anticon.- Hip Hop For The Advanced Listener
This is a primer of what Anticon. (collectively owned album that at one point signed pretty much every good "contemporary" rap artist on the scene today. only 6 tracks.

Atmosphere- Lucy Ford
Atmosphere is a sly tongue in cheek dude who is lyrically talented with a distinctive style. this is the only album i have of him and i can definitely recommend it. Standouts: Mama Had A Baby And His Head Popped Off, The Woman With The Tattooed Hands

Buck 65- Situation/Buck 65- Vertex
These are form a different era, the latter being back when Buck was signed to anticon (and his voice has changed alot) and the former his newest album. Both are totally enjoyable, his style can be best described as lower class trash rhymes. One of my fave artists atm Standouts: Shutter Buggi, The Centaur, Style #386 DOES HE PLAY?, 1957, Cop Shades, Way Back When

Clouddead- cLOUDDEAD/Clouddead- Ten
These guys are another anticon collection, and they pretty much reinvented rap what what i can tell. Their stuff when you first encounter it is completely head bending and i couldn't tell if i liked it until several listens... but i'm completely hooked. a mix of stream of consciousness rap and abstract beats from 3 of the most musically talented people i've listened to. Standouts: Apt. A (1), Apt A (2), Jimmy Breeze (2), Bike (2), Rifle Eyes, Son Of A Gun, Dead Dogs Two, The Velvet Ant

The Cool Kids- The Bake Sale
To me, these two are everything commercial rap should be. really accessible stuff with s touch of irony and no shitty lady "classic commercial rap culture" (hos drug dealing guns etc) not that that stuff "bothers" me but it's stupid to base your career of it (fiddy). Standouts: 88, A Little Bit Cooler, Gold And A Pager

E-40- My Ghetto Report Card
This is pretty much in complete contradiction with what i just mentioned (this guy tracks are pretty much all about drug dealing xD) but you really have to give respect to his writing/producing since his tracks are considered mostly revolutionary. alot of commerical rappers pretty much bite all of his lingo xD. Standouts: Gouda, Tell Me When To Go, Go Hard Or Go Home

Mos Def- New Danger/Mos Def- Black On Both Sides
You really can't help but respect Mos. Black on Both Sides isn't all that accessible but you need to give it a chance before it sinks in. He's really real and also defeated Kanye in a freestyle pretty much. Standouts: Mathematics, Brooklyn, Ghetto Rock, Close Edge

Spank Rock- YoYoYoYoYo
Glen Summarized this one pretty good. Really silly, awesome, accessible stuff. comparable to the cool kids but with everything turned way up. Standouts: What It Look Like, Rick Rubin, Backyard Betty, Coke & Wet

The Old School
Grandmaster Flash- The Message
Eazy-E- Boys In The Hood
Notorious B.I.G.- Party And Bullshit
Ice Cube- Once Upon a Time In The Projects
Run DMC- It's Like That

The Cool Kids- The Bake Sale
To me, these two are everything commercial rap should be. really accessible stuff with s touch of irony and no shitty lady "classic commercial rap culture" (hos drug dealing guns etc) not that that stuff "bothers" me but it's stupid to base your career of it (fiddy). Standouts: 88, A Little Bit Cooler, Gold And A Pager

man isn't it fantastic?
