Your Top 10 Favourite Video Games of All Time

The best game ever is called M.U.L.E., and it was written in the 80s. The games of the 80s were much better than the shit you play nowadays.

That is bullshit, and I am pretty sure you know it zerowing. Popularity definitely does not by itself signify greatness. The best it can do is signify possible greatness. The common masses are very good at thrusting up truly great creations and very mediocre ones. There is a reason Britney Spears is more popular than Rush, yet people generally all agree that 2112 is the best Rush song who like Rush and pay attention, and that is a large number of people itself. It works the exact same way with video games, except here we have a much greater problem of generational gap. It is very hard to reconcile if something being groundbreaking matters if it is fucking shit now (first Super Mario Brothers, the most popular game of all time in terms of sales, unless you aggregate a series like Pokemon, I guess). Then you have to recognize that people will never, ever, ever grade on the same scale. I like the same type of outcome in anime, music, any media: something of an epic, grand scale. GTA is not something of an epic scale. It may be witty, original, a great culmination of basic simple ideas in a manner no one else could have pulled off, but it is not epic. It is a game about smashing shit up. It is not a game about smashing shit up in the name of some service of some great quest. So for someone like me, no, it absolutely does not merit any consideration in a top ten list. Now, obviously my top ten list was entirely personal; were I to really approach it, I would probably try to search for a confluence of this epic strain with popular appeal and critical acclaim, such as Ocarina of Time and whatever. This still absolutely allows me to leave out Halo, Metal Gear Solid, Grand Theft Auto, Grand Turismo...however, I probably also have to drop something as simplistic as Sonic 3 & Knuckles then (but Sonic Adventure would pass). Your top ten standards are your own, so it is a farce for you to foist them on others.

Its quite evident by this thread everyone has a different opinion (lol), and I dont think a list that everyone agrees on could ever be reached.

I'm going to second whoever said Rouge Squadron for N64 it was amazing and I enjoyed it way more then the gamecube version.

But I'm gonna call bullshit on GoldenEye, because Perfect Dark for N64 was basically just a crisper, overall better version of GoldenEye.

The imbalance ruined it (Cassandra had this terrifying move that could parry anything, and Astaroth was just a faster version of his already insane character), and the character creation no one really cared about. Soul Caliber 2 was incredible, whereas 3 disappointed.

I'm going to second whoever said Rouge Squadron for N64 it was amazing and I enjoyed it way more then the gamecube version.
Yeah, Rogue Squadron is truly one of the best on the N64, since the controls and vehicle selection were far superior to Star Fox. (Enen though it lacked a land mode.) Not to mention that the voice acting was waaay advanced for it's time.

Yeah, but how many people remember voice acting clips from Rogue Squadron? It takes a bit more to create a great game than good controls and gameplay.

I know it's supposed to be a "top 10 best of all time", but mine is more like a "Top ten game I played the shit out of". I apologize if it seems to nintendo fan-boyish or based on archaic systems. Although to be fair, I think nostalgic appeal plays a big part in many people's selections for their list.

10. Harvest Moon

I played this game a lot when I was younger. many people look at ti and go "a farming simulator, wtf?" but the farming mechanics and trying to get that girl to love made this game utterly addicting. The newer ones (like friends of mineral town and what have you) are equally addicting and consume have consumed hundreds of hours of my time picking corn and throwing it into the feed box.

9. Banjo Kazooie

While number 9 on my favorite of all time, Banjo Kazooie has my number one spot for 3D platformer. I found the jokes in this extremely funny when I first played it (and I still find some of them funny today) and the various item collecting made the game a real challenge. I've seen other games copy it's formula (Original Jack+Daxter and Rachet+Clank), but so far none of them have been able to match the appeal and depth that was Banjo-Kazooie.

8. Elder Scrolls 3/4 (Morrowind/Oblivion)

This game holds a distinct space on the list just because of the near endless amounts of things you can do. While fable claims to be this big "do anything" game series, it has still always been outclassed by the sheer size and volume of the Morrowind/Oblivion. The other advantage was the absence of a morality meter, meaning that your character was whatever morality you wanted him/her to be, and you weren't confined to being completely good or bad (like most morality type games make you be). I put both morrowind and oblivion in this spot because I much preferred the world and environments in Morrowind, but I also preffered the streamlined skills/level/abilities systems present in Oblivion. The complete voice acting was also a nice touch.

7. Megaman X (Only the first one)

This is a game truly deserving of it's spot on my list of "games I played the shit out of". I distinctly remeber my baby-sitter owning a snes when I was only 5-9 years old and my friend and I would do nothing but alternate between this, Super Mario World, Donkey Kong Country, and Mario Kart. This game was distinct in that the level designs were hard as balls, the graphics are a MAJOR improvement over the original megaman ones (personally, i don't really like the original megaman series) and the weapons and characters were bad-ass. It was my 5-9 year old fantasy. it was also one of the few that had not ridiculous animal-element combonations.

6. Earthbound

Ahh, Earthbound. this game is on many people's lists and that's understandable. The game holds a quirky charm and a lighthearted nature that still manged to touch the hearts of gamers. It's a shame its sequal/prequel never made it to the states (although I think the almighty red-headed gods for romhackers). mother 3 was allright, but the darker nature of it just made it lose some of the appeal Earthbound had. This also goes down in my book as one of the best final boss fights in all of videogames. (seriously, who would have thought one of the worst commands in the game was the key to beating him?)

5. Super Mario World

Same thing as Megaman X, only this one got way playtime because of it's built in co-op feature. This also marks the introduction of my favorite nintendo character ever, Yoshi. As mentioned before, the game imrpoved on every aspect of the original mario (and only wins by a nose-hair over Super Mario 3). There's much more I could say about this, but most of you have already played it, so we'll move on.

4. Pokemon

Saddly, I never got to play the original RBY, I actually come into the series during GSC. Still, I've baught atleast one of the new version of pokemon every time a generation came out (including Leafgreen, one of the RBY era remakes) and racked up atleast 200 hours on each one. I think part of it is just the nature of the game and adding new pokemon. every new pokemon game I play feels like I'm playing a pokemon game for the very first time while I discover new pokemon, new regions, and new challenges. While I disagree with the plot repition that seems to be going on (seriously, the plot of D/P is the same as R/S but with a different team/legendary pokemon) the game still holds a place in my heart for sucking up hours of my time and getting me to re-enjoy the experience over and over again.

3. Super Smash Brothers

Arguably the greatest multiplayer game of all time. it's also one of the few games that, IMO, has only gotten better and better each time it's been released. I can't tell you number of hours my friends and I must have wasted beating the shit out of eachother from the original N64 version all the way to standing outside Gamestop for the midnight release of brawl. The gameplay is smooth, the visuals are stunning, and utter awesomeness that happens everytime my friends and I sit down with a shitload of soda and junkfood and play eachother in various types of VS matches for 8 hours straight makes this my number 3 favorite game.

2. Ocarina of Time

I played this game many, many, many times. I played it so much I have every single dungeon in the original (non master-quest) version memorized by heart and if I close my eyes and cocentrate I can walk through each and every single one in my head. This game was the first Zelda game I played, and still holds a special place in my heart. Every bossfight was challenging, every puzzle wracked my brain, and every single little collectable was a bitch to find. and when I finally completed it all? I'd delete my save and do it all over again. This game also holds a story that touches your heart, from watching the forest you grew up in become over-run by monster to having to save the world only to be sent back to before you would ever need to do it. this was all helped by the fact that it was always encouraged to name the character after yourself, making it feel that you personally were doing all this.

1. Chrono Trigger

is anyone really suprised? I swear by this game; so much so that it's become the basis for many of my philisophical and spiritual beleifs. Every moment of this game had me on the edge of my seat, pushing to see what happened next. The battle was also something kind of new, with area based attack and the fact that there were NO RANDOM BATTLES. Chrono trigger is also the only game I've ever seen pull of a decent mutli-char tech system. The way dual-techs were done was so elegant and intuitive that I'm suprised that no other game seems to have copied it, instead opting to make it much more complicated. The games story was also amazing, having you travel through several different times and battling several different enemies all to find out how to defeat and alien parasite burrowed deep within the ground. The multitudes of alternate endings and pro-final boss sidequests were just icing on the cake.

There you have it, my list. I apologize for the most likely numerous spelling and grammatical errors that litter it.

I've heard the same, but there was just so much more stuff to do in the third and the Character Creator won me over instantly.

I agree from a gaming standpoint it has much more to offer. Peachfuzz basically said what I was thinking. I was thinking more from the competitive community when I mentioned that. II was just much more balanced between the characters, while III was poorly tested and it showed in the hands of a capable battler.

I hate making these lists because it is impossible to rank the top 10 out of a billion games, but i'll try.

10) Pokemon D/P. This would be much higher if it weren't for the flaws that have existed since RBY. Still forcing random battles upon us every three steps, eh, Gamefreak? And Friend Codes? Seriously.

9) Adventure. I had to put this Atari 2600 gem on the list. It was the first game that I ever got immersed in and it is responsible for my love of video games. It even holds its own today against all those games that feel more like work.

8) Mass Effect. Great story and fun gameplay. Great graphics, too. This game was just great. A bit glitchy and not much replay value, but great.

7) Goldeneye. People are right when they say that this isn't a technological masterpiece, but that doesn't mean that we didn't have an unimaginable amount of fun while playing this game.

6) Super Smash Bros Brawl. Shares the 'Ultimate Multiplayer Game' title with Goldeneye but gets the nod for being technologically superior.

5) Resident Evil 4. Great characters, story, gameplay, everything. It's hard to find anything wrong with this game. Your right hand comes off?

4) Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Do I really have to explain this one?

3) Ico. A tiny game that noone really knows about. Stunningly beautiful, with simple, intuitive gameplay. Lead a princess through a castle and have an experience that lasts a lifetime.

2) Final Fantasy XI. That's right, the MMORPG. You have to dig through a planet's worth of dirt and crust to get to the good stuff, but once you do, it is simply the best online game to have ever existed. Nothing else even comes close.

1) The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion. I bought it on the day it came out and i'm still playing it. Not much else to say other than that, except that it is the realest world ever created (besides ours of course).

Just missed: Shadow of the Colossus, KOTOR, Super Mario 64, SOCOM 3

I'm not going to list my top 10 but I will say that

Dragon Warrior Monsters (GBC)

is probably my favorite game of all time. Some of the best weeks of my childhood were spent up at one of my best friend's cabins in the summer doing nothing but sitting on the porch in the shade with lemonade playing through the game over and over together and occasionally taking breaks to go water skiing or something.

Koichi Sugiyama is not an incredible composer by the standards of Stravinsky or Brahms or anything but the tunes he created for the Dragon Quest games are as a whole my favorite video game music, without a doubt. I have the entire orchestrated collection of DQ music on itunes...Also, the dungeon exploration music from Dragon Warrior Monsters is probably the singular most-listened-to song of my entire life.

The game is absolutely stuffed to the brim with goofy charm, and as it was the first Dragon Quest/Warrior game I ever played all of the references and fantastic monster designs were all new to me. I still play it sometimes :-)

I know they released a Japanese version of the game updated for PSX...Can U.S./Canada/etc. Playstations read Japanese disks?

Some of my favorite Games, In no particular order.

Bioshock: This is seriously one of the best experiences I have ever had on my Xbox 360. I loved the story, the gameplay was brilliant, it was easily the best game of the year. The only complaints I have are that it had too much repetetive hacking, with randomly generated, occasionally unsolvable puzzles, and that there was no multiplayer. Deathmatches in this engine would be incredible.

Portal: If you haven't played this game, change that. Now. This is the closest thing I've ever seen to a perfect puzzle game besides stuff like Tetris. Definetely the best linear puzzle game, it lets you figure out the mechanics on your own and teaches you to chain more and more complex actions, and the deadpan humor is fantastic.

Pokemon: There's nothing to say that hasn't already been said, I was of the generation that grew up on RBY and GSC. I had a falling out 3rd gen, but now I'm more obsessed than ever about this game.

Fable: Note: does not include Fable II. Fable was one of those sincerely charming RPGs. While the horrible story was only surpassed in failure by its sequel, the game had a quirky humor and really drew you into your character. I won't rant about all the problems of Fable II right now, but Fable was an honestly enjoyable experince.

Megaman Battle Network: Everyone likes some oddball game series, and I am no exception. The game had an actually exceptional level of customization, with styles to adapt to, programs to install, and folders to build. It had a fairly strong post-game (though not to the strength of the Pokemon series) and I liked the feel of the games.

Knights of the Old Republic
: The greatest epic-fest to hit my PC (I didn't have an Xbox at the time). Fantastic story, great engine, high replayability, it made you feel like a real hero (or villain).

Honorable Mention: Halo, SSBB, Mass Effect, Civilization IV, Sims

my list, in no particular order

links awakening, wind waker, metroid fusion, metal gear solid 3, super metroid, majoras mask, mother 3, shadow of the colossus, rez, and mischief makers

yeah three zeldas and no ocarina of time wanna rumble about it

ocarina of time had no soul; as far as zeldas go, i would probably put it behind: links awakening, majoras mask, wind waker, link to the past, oracle of seasons, and oracle of ages

My only GTA experience comes from 4, which I just started playing (about 1.5 hours in)...and I can't see what all the hype is about.

I will admit that the game is hilarious -- the dialog between Niko and Roman had me literally loling, and some of the radio stations made me unable to play briefly because I was doubled over in laughter. But the controls are fucking horrible -- seeing as how driving appears to be about 50% of this game, shouldn't it have better controls for that? Also I did the bowling thing and found it annoying as hell. Not looking forward to doing more of that.

As far as open-world design goes, Morrowind does it better.

There will always be some bias no matter what but I would have mine like this and bunch some up in series as its to hard not with only 10.

10. Medal of Honor Allied Assault(PC)
Arguably the first really good WWII FPS and spawned hundreds of other games from its success including the Call of Duty series and its just simple fun that was done so well and still has strong base of players online.

9. Earthbound(SNES)
One the best RPG's of its time easy to get into and involved minimal grinding levels which was an issue with Final Fantasy games of the time and a weird but great storyline.

8.GTA series(3 and up)
Not that big a fan but its still a great series and deserves a mention.

7.Halo series(xbox(360), PC)
Popular for a good reason and is one of the best FPS out there,

6.Pokemon series
Great series that has been going over 12 years and its still strong

5. Final Fantasy 7(PS1)
Defined what a great RPG should be good storyline, great game play and made transition from 2d to 3d perfectly.

4. Zelda Ocarina of time(N64)
By far the best in the series and had some the most fun game play ever.

3. World of Warcraft(PC)
I am not a huge fan of MMO's and I hardly ever play them but this game is just so well put together with a leveling system that is close to perfect and its so deep you could play for years and years.

2. Chrono Trigger(SNES)
This game is the best RPG I have ever played that had one of the best sound tracks ever and was the first game to have so many possible ending and had such a high replay value

1.Mario Series
This series has put out so many great games on every console its been on whether is platforming, RPG ect its just almost always a qualaty game and thats why I believe it takes the #1 spot in my opinion.

I agree from a gaming standpoint it has much more to offer. Peachfuzz basically said what I was thinking. I was thinking more from the competitive community when I mentioned that. II was just much more balanced between the characters, while III was poorly tested and it showed in the hands of a capable battler.

Oh, now I see. I was playing III entirely by myself noncompetitively, so I never understood why it was so disappointing to the majority of players.

Thanks for clearing that up.

I'm suprised and more than a little hurt that nobody has mentioned advance wars. I'm not too fussed about the newest one, but advance wars DS is simply the best game I've ever played. The different units are well balanced and are right for what they cost, the CO's have personality and actually play quite differently and are mainly well balanced (apart from the likes of grit and colin who are obviously broken). There is a long single player mode, and when you play it on hard difficulty you'll find certain missions almost impossible. There are literally hundreds of war room maps to play through giving it a play time of several hundred hours and you can make your own maps. You can also play 4-player multiplayer with only 1 DS and you can build your own maps. There is also a multitude of modes in case you get bored of standard gameplay. The contols are simple and make for easy use and the graphics are presented well.

Did I mention its more addicting than crack?

The best game of ALL time.

Half-Life: Set the standards for all first-person shooters, Half-Life is still the king and hasn't been beat, except mabye by Half-Life 2. Half-Life told one of the greatest video game stories of all time, without the use of cutscenes, but through npc interaction and scripted sequences. It also played great, had fantastic graphics for the time, great weapons and enemies, and you were the most awesome protagonist of all time: nerdy scientist gone one badass mofo by the name of Gordon Freeman. Fear the crowbar!

In no particular order for me.
Half Life
Super Smash Bros Melee
Halo Series
Pokemon Series
Soul Caliber Series
Final Fantasy VII
Superman 64
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
World of Warcraft
Guitar Hero/Rock Band Series-I know someone will flame me for this but its so amazing, the songs, the rhythm, and just how much fun it is. I know guitarists hate it but I play guitar and I think this game is great.

1. Megaman X-X8
-Of all the games i played this was perhaps the most challenging strategic and fun i played most of the series till someone stole my game a few years back never got back into it
2. Super Mario Bros./Yoshi Island3
-The Classics played as a child like most shere fun and pleasure along with Yoshi Island games.
3. Ratchet and Clank
-Once again another interactive strategic game, i could never find it again but if i could i would play.
4. Pokemon Crystal
-The best of the pokemon series, i probably wont buy the remake because playing through the games bores i prefer to battle.
5. Pokemon Diamond/Pearl/Platinum
-Possibly the best game since GSC, im still sad a few pokemon didnt get any evolutions namely Lapras.
6. Sonic Riders (The original)
-The only racing game and a psuedo one at that, i prefer this much over Zero Gravity due to more customization longer/better story line. Sega's best.
7. Megaman Battle Network 3 (GameCube)
-Only played for a short time due to me not having the ability to save an i got deleted once due to a mistake, i still prefer X more but Lan and Pals had their perk though the show ended unfinished.
8. Some Zelda Game
-Borrowed from a friend dont really remeber the name, pure strategic, puzzling standard zelda fun
9. This really old battle car game that i lost, but was really fun.
-One of the first games i got for my GBA, sadly i dont remeber the name but i remeber it being pure fun, not really a racing game morel ike mashing crashing blowing up fun, decent story line aswell
10.Yugioh Series
-The games were all, ehh if anything i played quite a few so i thought I'd list em anyway, i quit the card game a few years back well collecting to much money & time, i switched to a free online game which i play on and off.

The best PC game on my list probably ranks around 4 or 5 is Deus Ex. This game is a gem. The story is great and entertaining, you could place stats in different weapons and so much more.

mmm I'll give this a shot. Maybe not 10, but here's some good ones.

Golden Sun
It's been mentioned here already, I'm happy so see =D. Golden Sun is probably a top contendor for RPGs with Final Fantasy. The story is epic, the battle system is fun, the Djinni system is different then mosts, and the puzzles can be rather challenging. Shame it hasn't gotten a 3rd one yet. Final Fantasy is great too, but everyone else said that, soooo...

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Super Mario 64
Probably the best adventure games out there in addition to what everyone else is saying.

World of Warcraft
I'm a borderline addict :pirate:. But this game is such a great MMO. 80 levels of amazing zones and leveling system so far, and then raid and PvP content that could keep you playing for a very long time. 11 million players to back this up, too.

Paper Mario
Humurous dialogue, EXCELLENT fight system (action commands make this game so cool), and just over fun RPG here. How cool is it to be a paper man beating up some giant dragon, ya?

Super Smash Bros. Melee
If this had Wifi I'd be much more inclined to bust it out than playing Brawl. SSBM had a much smoother, faster, crisper fighting style that it's prerequisite and sequel. This is the best fighter out there IMO, though Brawl is nice for it's minigames, more characters and online play.

Spore
I could spend days on the creator screens alone; there's so much imagination to be spent in this game. That alone is probably what makes Spore so cool, though the progression seems rather repetitive, even with your own, different monsters as a player or NPC enemy.

Tetris
Same as what OP said.
PS I finally learned how to play the tetris music on marimba and euphonium lol

Fire Emblem
10 games of this out there should say enough. The story is great, the gameplay is fun, and there's so many ways to make this game different each play through.
