Your Top 10 Favourite Video Games of All Time

I don't really play or enjoy many first person shooters. So this list doesn't really cater to those types of gamers

10. Guitar Hero
Ever since this came out more and more people started playing video games. Simply because its FUN. For all that it lacks in depth, story line, and strategy this series is undeniably addicting. At the end of the day- whats really important in a video game is that you have fun playing it. Guitar Hero delivers that in spades. Play by yourself, play with friends, play with girls, play while drunk at a party... you get the idea.

9. Car Battler Joe

9. This really old battle car game that i lost, but was really fun.
-One of the first games i got for my GBA, sadly i dont remeber the name but i remeber it being pure fun, not really a racing game morel ike mashing crashing blowing up fun, decent story line aswell
I remembered the name of the game for you =) and yes it was awesome. Probably would be ranked higher if more than 4 and a half people owned the game and you could find some friends to do mulitplayer with =D. That aside, huge amounts of different cars, to trick out with weapons and engines, then blow the crap out of eachother? YES PLEASE

8. Kingdom of Loathing
http://www.kingdomofloathing.com/
A free online (mmo)rpg, with an amazing feel. Its strongest point is that it possesses both a light hearted humor which makes picking it up for the first time fun and enjoyable, and presents many different stages of optimization and inter player competition (speed ascending) which keeps you addicted to the game even after you've read all the jokes- and its free to play =)

7. Super Smash Bros.
This series redefined what fighting games are and represent. see other posts for details.

6. Legend of Zelda: Links Awakening
by far my favorite in the legend of zelda series, this game boy release contained a huge amount of dungeons, a high difficulty level in its puzzels, and a large amount of different things you could do. Despite not being as "revolutionary" as OoT, I think it epitomizes what Zelda games are far better. Besides, I found Mojora's Mask to be more enjoyable anyway but I'm probably a heratic.

5. Chrono Trigger
for reasons iterated a million times in previous posts

4. Pokemon
I think... that on this website... that the reasons for this entry is self explanitory

3. Dawn of War
I've seen starcraft get some mention, but IMHO Dawn of War is a superior game. DoW was a revolutionary RTS series that removed the focus on resource gathering from the genera, it implemented the "strategic point" system where your rescources are mainly determined by how much territory your army controlls. The game in its current incarnation (the soulstorm expansion) allows for 9 different unique playable races. (Eldar, Space Marines, Orks, Chaos, Imperial Guard, Necrons, Tau Empire, Sister's of Battle, and Dark Eldar.) and is actually playably managed. My friend who played nearly nothing but starcrarft in highschool- training against Koreans- actually enjoys DoW more.

2. Advance Wars Series
ever since its first US release, I became really enamoured with it. unfortunatly after the first one the single player campaigns got really competitive, but playing against your friends was always a blast. One of the most solid Turn based strategy games around, and as someone allready said, the different COs are all very fun to play as or against. (go Lash!)

1. Nethack
2 full pages and nobody mentioned nethack!?
http://www.nethack.org/

That has to be the best rpg ever released even if it is in ASCII and
- 50 randomly generated levels
- 13 different charachter classes
- 5 different playable races each with different attributes
- hundreds of different enemies
- almost unlimited different things to do- from being able to polymorph into most of the different enemies to reciving gifts from your god by sacraficing on an alter.
At the end of the day. Nethack proves that it still is a great game even with 0 graphics and being over 20 years old.

Whoa, I totally forgot about Nethack.

I never really enjoyed it myself but I cannot dispute that the game is incredible and has been extremely influential to many, many developers who are producing games today.

10. Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow

This was my first game in the series, and it made a fan out of me. The soul system, the progression of weapons, the story, and the bosses made this game absolutely unforgettable.

9. Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance

I started Fire emblem with Sacred Stones, and then I went and played its predecessor FE7, both were amazing games, but when this game came out for the gamecube it blew my mind. At first I wasn't sure how a 3-D FE would stand up to the classic 2-D, but it was just as good or better. Throw in a great story, awesome characters, and classic FE gameplay, and we have one of the better games of my life.

8. Shadow of the Colossus

A unique game in every way, No enemies besides the bosses, fairly little dialogue, beautiful landscapes, and some of the most memorable boss fights in my life. There was nothing like finding the next boss and staring at its size in awe, and then figuring out how to take the beast down. Although there was very little story, the ending helped shed some light on the situation, and gave the game a great closing. As far as the music goes I still listen to some of the tracks, such good music in this game.

7. Pokemon Gold

Its not that I wasn't a part of the RBY era, I loved RBY and played it a lot, there is just something about GSC that caused me to fall in love with it. From anywhere to the new types, battling with lance, and all that time spent searching for the legendary dogs, this game just stands out as the tiniest bit better than RBY in my opinion.

6. Metroid Prime echoes 2

Many would say the first is better, and maybe it is, but I love sanctuary fortress. That and the atmosphere of the game was much better than its predecessor.

5. Super Smash Brothers

I remember my friends and I would get off the bus everyday at my friends house and play around 1-8 games, and then go home. The game was great, and the amount of hours logged between my friends games and mine is just incredible.

4. Resident Evil 4

As far as console games go this is the game I have beaten the most times. The story and gameplay was just awesome, and still is. Such good boss fights and many extras aswell.

3. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of time

One of the best games I have ever played, these last three games are too hard for me to place so I'm not sure if this should be 3 but whatever. 3-D zelda games are like crack for me, and this was the king of them all. So many dungeons and side quests, great bosses, and a solid story.

2. Metal Gear Solid

Amazing game, never have I seen such a great story in a video game, the characters were just amazing, the boss battles revolutionary, and the gameplay awesome. This is one of the few games that created me as a gamer.

1. The Legend of Zelda Oracle of Seasons & Oracle of Ages

Whenever I played one, I continued onto the other, so I consider it all to be one long excellent adventure. I have beaten these two games more times than I care to remember, these two games created me as the gamer I am today. Even after beating the main story, there were so many side quests to do and so many items to get. Just this summer I played through these games again and no love is lost for them, just such amazing games.

Let's see.

10. Pokemon RBYGSC FRLG

Screw Ru/Sa/Em/D/P/Pl. In my opinion, what defined the Pokemon games is that they were just an "ordinary adventure", an open ended environment where things weren't "epic". In fact, that's the reason they are only ranked 10 - I think you being that kid that "beats Team Rocket", a syndicate that the entire world was seemingly up against is just a bit silly (along with other stuff). But everything else is what made the games for me - the relaxed atmosphere where you just go around, find new Pokemon, battle, trade, and "explore". This is something I think they really just demolished in Ru/Sa, and completely obliterated in Diamond/Pearl, where they bring in literally creatures that are capable of destroying the entire world and letting you be *the one*. Pokemon series literally self destructed when they tried to make things more "epic".

9. Mario Party series.

Face it, these are pretty much one of the best party games ever. Anyone can pick it up and just play, which was what I really loved about this game - just playing it with other people.

8. Master of Orion II

This, I believe, is pretty much the best turn based strategy games of all time. It's interface is simple and effective, the game surprisingly has interesting amounts of depth despite how shallow everything feels. MoO 3 was such a disappointment :(

7. Lufia II

"My First RPG". Despite the glitches that plague the game, there are just so many things to find in this game. The Puzzles give it a completely unique experience and it contains a few of my favorite video moments.

6. Phantom Brave

"The Only True SRPG". Strategy RPG, IMO, is a misnomer - I don't think games like FE, FFT, etc take real planning, unlike Phantom Brave, where it literally forces you to think ahead (assuming of course you don't abuse the typical Nippon Ichi levelling tricks). Not only that, it has the coolest last boss battle in any game, and there are just so many things to do even past End Game (especially with the new release of PB that has the new version of Pringer Z... i wish they released this in the states T_T)

5. Harvest Moon PSX/GBA/N64

I never understood what was the deal with the SNES Harvest Moon, or any versions past that. I think PSX/GBA and the N64 versions were simply one of the best games ever. The game feels relaxed, but there's still yet so many things to do everyday when you wake up and many goals to work towards. It's a game that literally keeps you busy =)

4. Chrono Trigger/Cross

Some people literally digged way too hard into this game - and this is precisely the reason I think this game is so damn interesting. When I first played through the game, I didn't think about the plot much, but just grinded it through like a typical RPG. But reading some of the fan theories, and replaying the game put in so much depth into the game for me that there's no way this series is not going to be in my top 10 list. It's a game where if you try to connect the dots, you start to appreciate the complexity within the game.

3. Tetris

Who hasn't been addicted to this game...?

2. Cave Story

I normally dislike platformers, but I really loved this game, and there's a reason I recommend it to nearly everyone. There is nothing "wrong" with this game - everything works together to create a very unique atmosphere.

1. Puyo Puyo 2

"Tetris on Crack" is how I often describe this game to friends. It's simple yet so complex, and it's just plain fun, and more fun when you play it with other people. I love constructing chains mostly because it really is just satisfying :)

1. The Legend of Zelda Oracle of Seasons & Oracle of Ages
Yeah, it's awesome that someone put these as first; usually they get little recogniition in the zelda series since they're overshadowed by fuckloads of other games. I remember playing these when I was 9, I got obsessed with it and played the games (through the link secret thing) plenty of times.

Don't have a list right now (it's 1 AM here), will edit later

maybe its just me but i cannot understand how anyone could put ocarina of time as their favorite zelda

it was really a pretty plain zelda; besides 3d (which i dont think should be counted for the game just because it was the first to do it, as there have been superior 3d zeldas), pretty much everything in the game had been done

the dungeon design was relatively bland and uninteresting, the puzzles werent particularly hard (and neither were the bosses, but then again, bosses havent traditionally been that hard in the modern zelda), combat rewarded swordplay over clever use of items, the water dungeon was broken completely, time travelling was just a less interesting rip from the dark world (where you actually had to traverse from one map to the other with some regularity), the music was unmemorable and pretty low on the list of zeldas - i mean, even twilight princess, which was considered a pretty bad zelda, had music going for it

oot was a solid game, but it never really excelled anywhere besides in proving that a 3d zelda wasnt impossible, and even then, the next 3d zelda that came out totally trounced it in terms of originality and memorability

I think that there are BIG flaws here, because i feel like there's the classic"Nintendo user" and the "PSX/2/3 user" so i'm just going to mention some games that i think deserve respect(without a rank,of course)

SILENT HILL: Wow,what to say about SH...well,the best survival horror, always at the shadow of the RE,but in no terms a worst game...
Best camera in PSX,the sounds were in perfect sinchronicity with the movements, and the atmosphere made one of teh best games in PSX

TWISTED METAL: The question is, ¿How can you NOT HAVE FUN with twisted metal? Is just awesome, and,to maek it better, the game has a great history for each character,so is a jewel...

CRASH BANDICOOT:WARPED: Wait! Wait! Dont throw chairs!....in my personal opinion, this game is one of the best plataform games ever made...it is just gigantic! it has 25 levels...7 bosses...5 secret levels, races, fights, and time trials! Everything for the fan of nintendo who has the PSX!

Sorry,i'm going to continue another day,i just ran out of time :S

LIst of games that deserves mention: GT2,FFIX,Ergheiz,Digimon World 3(Yeah,i know its a sin to mention digimon here, but i'm an anarchist lol,but its a personal favorite)
Clock tower,Alone in the dark,Darkwatch,Psychonauts,REZ(FOR THE PEOPLE WHO WANT TO PLAY THIS GAME: ¡Go see a doctor first!) Chrono Cross,Legend of mana, Star Ocean:till the end of time, Fahrenheit, and others...

The OP is more of a "most influential games of all time" list but not really

I also don't get why so many people bash Twilight Princess, I enjoyed it a lot. It's one of the longest Zeldas and pretty much the whole game is interesting - I wouldn't put it as my favorite Zelda (lttp) but it's a great game. Phantom Hourglass on the other hand was absolutely terrible.

Honestly, I thought twilight princess was awesome. It took everything OOT did that I fell in love with and pushed it to the brink. The only reason I like OOT better is because I look at it with the rose-tinted glasses of nostalgia.

Also I'm playing through Phantom Hourglass right now and actually like it. The story leaves a bit to be desired (but then again, what portable zelda game didn't) but so far it's HARD AS BALLS! It's definatley one of the most difficult Zelda games I've played and I like that it's the first game I've seen truly utilize all of the DS's capabiliies.

1. Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest

The best soundtrack in any game released on a Nintendo console, and the funnest game of all time.

2. Donkey Kong 64

I played this game all the time when I was young, it's the biggest N64 game ever.

3. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

I used to hate on this game, but after replaying it, I've come to love it.

4. Super Mario 64

This is a fun as hell and easy platformer. It being easy doesn't stop it from being fucking awesome.

5. The Legend of Zelda

Somewhat odd to place on the list, but this is a very badass game. My favorite on the NES. I still can't beat Second Quest though.

6. Super Mario Bros.

This game is a classic, playing it never gets old.

7. Mega Man X3

My favorite Mega Man game, shit loads of things to find, and a somewhat challenging experience. (Until you get the Z-Saber). I find this somewhat underrated by Mega Man fans.

8. Sonic Adventure

Sonic's first leap into 3D proves to be the best Sonic game ever.

9. Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3

Yes, this is an anime fighting game...the best one that is.

10. Pokemon Yellow

Lots of things to do, considering this is a Pokemon forum I don't think it needs to be explained that much.

That's probably because no one would consider that a top ten platformer let alone a top ten game in general. There are just too many more influential/better games out there.
You can't be serious. DKC2 is the best 2-D platformer I've ever played. The levels are creative, the bosses are great, some areas are make-you-throw-a-controller difficult, and the graphics are excellent.

This isn't a nostalgia fueled complaint by the way, I picked up DKC2 from virtual console after I played the first one.

I don't think I can post a list. I'd probably be biased to a lot of N64 games..

Edit for SilentMartyr: Did you miss "This isn't a nostalgia fueled complaint?" I really never played any 2D platformers as a kid; I've played most of mine within the last 3 years. As far as influence goes, I guess you have a point with Super Mario Bros, Sonic, Mega man, and SMW, but the actual gameplay of DKC2 is superior to pretty much all of those games.

Don't really have a top 10 but imo..

God of War 2
Amazing gameplay and graphics. Controls, Kratos, bosses, levels etc were all great.

Pokemon
Most enjoyable handheld game imo.

Soul Calibur 2
One of my favorite fighters, great graphics and fluent gameplay and likeable/unique characters.

I can be serious. I can name probably six or seven games right off the rip that would be considered better/more influential.

SMB
SMB3
SMW
Mega Man
Mega Man 2
Mega Man 3
Mega Man X
Sonic the Hedgehog
Sonic 2

Ok so I got nine. Can anyone truly say that those aren't better or at least on par to the level that DKC2 is at? I like the DKC series too but nostalgia can only carry something so far.

No particular order (although X-Com is definately first).

1. X-Com: UFO defense

I lost sleep playing this when it first came out. I still play it today and it still kicks my ass. I love you, X-Com.

2. Baldur's Gate 2

An epic storyline with memorable characters and good gameplay and good writing. The best RPG I've ever played.

3. Serious Sam

Just remembering it means I'm going to install it. My favorite FPS. Took everything I loved about the good old zany ones and improved it.

4. River City Ransom

Save your girlfriend by beating up a bunch of gooks and eat some fast food on the way. The atmosphere in this game is just so damn happy I can't get over it.

5. Raptor: Call of the Shadows

Apogee at its best. A 2-D shooter to die for.

6. The Secret of the Monkey Island

They don't make them like this any more. I miss you, old Lucas Arts.

7. Pokémon Gold/Silver

Still my favorite out of the lot, at least for the single player. Battling Red was just... woah.

8. Fallout

War, war never changes. And neither does my love for the original Fallout.

9.Phoenix Wright: Ace Attourney

Probably the newest game on my list, I had great fun with it even though it was basically just a story with a bit of interaction.

10. Castlevania 3

It's my favorite Castlevania, probably just because of nostalgia.

(go Lash!)

I'm glad there's another Advance Wars fan around! :) I'm in love with these games.

I'm actually surprised that more people haven't been saying the Final Fantasy Series and the Resident Evil Series. Personally, Final Fantasy 8 is one of my fav games of all time (I also love 6, 7, and 10). And the original RE game was ground-breaking (even though the voice acting is ridiculous). I do have to concur with my fellow Megaman lovers though - Megaman 2 is one of the greatest games of all time.

I'm almost insulted people aren't mentioning the Half-Life series. I mean, they were only the most revolutionary first-person shooters of all time and won more awards than any other game in history.

my list would be

1.chrono trigger
chrono trigger is my favorite RPG with great bosses, a fun battling system, and a great story

2. legend of zelda ocarina of time
brought the zelda series in 3-d with big dungeons to explore and great bosses

3. legend of zelda link to the past
i liked this game because of all the great items you could get and the dungeons

4. super mario galaxy
this game is awesome because of the great gameplay and spot on controls
5. super mario 64
brought mario into 3-d for the first time

6. any advance wars
i just love advance wars because i could never grow tired of it because of the great gameplay and awesome strategies you have to come up with

7. any pokemon game
i just loves these because of the competitiveness and customizing pokemon

8. yoshis island
this is my favorite plaformer and was the first time you could control yoshi and the graphics had a crayon draw style to them which i liked

9. super mario world
spot on controls and the first game with yoshi in it

10. resident evil 4
this game was awesome and killing zombies was fun

I haven't played most of the games regarded as amazing (E.g. Chrono Trigger) So I'll just keep it short and sweet.

1. Legend Of Zelda : Ocarina of Time
2. Super Mario Galaxy
3. Super Metroid
4. Super Mario 64
5. Super Smash Bros Brawl
6. Goldeneye
7. Half Life 2
8. Metal Gear Solid 2
9. Resident Evil 4
10. Sonic The Hedgehog 2.

I've played all but one of those games, and the only thing that approaches DKC2 is Super Mario World. Country 2 is definitely in the top 5 SNES games, even if it doesn't make my top 10 overall list.

I'm suprised and more than a little hurt that nobody has mentioned advance wars.

Why are you hurt? Were you involved in the creation of the game?

Llama, Dawn of Sorrow is really quite tangibly worse than Aria of Sorrow if you look at both games critically, or at least if you keep in mind that Dawn of Sorrow is a rehashing of Aria with worse weapons and annoying stylus addendums.

what an odd post

Anyway, AWDS was good fun but yeah competitively it was utterly ridiculous. Not the CO Powers so much as the Meter charge rates giving everyone their power every like 3 days. AW2 versus (or advance wars by web) is basically just playable AWDS though so that's fine. That said, DoR is most likely both the deepest and least cared-about AW game in the series, though that has more to do with the community in general fizzling out than anything else.
