Lying during battles - Acceptable or not?

Right, so I was having a ladder match with someone earlier, and during it, a situation came up in which my opponent killed a pokemon with a scizor and said something to the effect of "hooray choice Band" (I didnt keep the exact log, this is just me running off my memory). Anyway, a bit later in the match, and now armed with this knowledge, I send in my ScarfZone to revenge kill it with HP Fire when it had just used Bullet Punch. Easy KO, amrite? Wrong, because Scizor turned out to be holding an Shed Shell of all things instead (weird I know, but this guy didnt seem too bright anyway, so maybe i should have seen that coming), which means heatran got to say gg >.>

Anyway, the purpose of that little story above was to explain what got me thinking about this. Is lying about your pokemon considered acceptable? On one hand, its clearly misleading your opponent, which can give you an unfair advantage, not to mention what would happen if you get caught. On the other hand, its the opponents decision whether or not to believe what you say. So, I'd like to know what the forum thinks.

*indication to discuss*

Well, it is the internet, and you can't tell if someone is lying, so I would just ignore the person's comments.

It's better to do that than just believing them and then losing a Pokemon. Most people won't say information about their Pokemon unless they are lying, anyways.

Of course it's not honorary or respectable, but you're seriously going to believe your enemy?

*A yells across a trench*

A: "Got any ammo left?"
B: "No"
A: Then let's talk this out.

*A walks across the field and gets shot by B*

Now I can understand if you are friends with the guy, but any information willingly given out is probably misleading.

I don't care if it's acceptable or not, in most cases I do whatever I want in battles. If I'm trying to use a lure, most times I will make a comment like that to try and lul the opponent into a sense of security.

For the most part you should be ignoring the chat and focusing on the battle anyways, though you can't really help looking at comments like that. Still, chat can be an effective tool in a mindgame even against those who try to tune it out.

I don't think its bad at all. Verbal mindgames add an interesting twist to battles. Although I don't lie, if my opponent starts asking me questions like what item I was holding/etc I'll usually reply with stupid shit like "My Scizor was holding Choice Specs."

Its funny really, if people are dumb enough to ask you what your team consists of during a battle, they better expect trickery, because no sane person is going to give away their strategies unless the battle is massively in their favor.

@ the first 3 people mostly: I was hoping for more responses about whether or not they though lying was an acceptable tactic to use for mind games and such, rather than "lol how could you fall for that" How many Shed Shell Scizor do you see anyway?

There was one time when someone lied to me in a battle by saying they had no ghost types on their team. Their last pokemon turned out to be Dusknoir. However, he admitted that it was an honest mistake - he thought Dusknoir was dark type not ghost type.

Sometimes however if my opponent does more damage than I expect, I ask "Choice Band?" or "Choice Specs?" and wait for a response, which is usually a yes.

No matter what, I never lie, but sometimes I do not directly reveal the truth. For example, if one of my pokemon is holding Expert Belt and my opponent says "How can I beat scarf <insert pokemon>?", I'll usually say "What if it isn't scarfed?"

i think a lot of people would agree with "its very poor etiquette" to lie about how much pp you have left in your moves during a stall war when your opponent asks you. I mean, people do have things to do in real life, and if you don't tell them it doesn't help you and it only creates an enemy. I mean, why would you lie about it?

It frustrates me to no end when people either a.) lie about it or b.) ignore you. You guys piss me off!

I don't really care if someone lies about an item or something mid-game because you should be ignoring that anyway. Only PP counts!

I'd say this is also a kind of mindgames, so why shouldn't you use this?
And you still can see if he has band if you look at the damage he deals, you should know how much a chice band scizor does (as it killed in your situation this doesn't help, but in generall it does)
An other thing you should think about why someone should say "hooray choice band" if he kills with a banded pokemon, because then it turns out to an obvious bluff
Agreeing with KD24 about PP counts as this isn't a mindgame or anything

why would you lie about it?
to win.

that said, PP counting is super ridiculous and it'd probably be nicer if the program itself just did it for you. but as it stands, that's just how the game goes I guess.

Sure it is. Stall war rages on and you're running low on PP.

A: How much PP do you have left?
B: 12

A: Now what? I only have 8 left. I'm going to lose this war. I need to switch.

You switch and in reality your opponent only had 5 PP left. It is mindgames because you will often based your moves on this information.

Also, about the log, it only goes so far back. You'd have to save it to your computer midgame, open it, and then find the turns and count them. Perfectly doable, but tedious.

It's like poker; bluffing is part of the game. That being said, I typically ignore everything my opponent says, including their pokemon's nicknames (such as the idiots who named their Swords Dance Garchomp Scarfchomp) and draw my own conclusions.

PP counting is not a mind game as long as Shoddy displays the log for you to look back on.

I lie in a match from time to time. For me, I tend to lie about my moveset. For example, I have a Magnezone with Hidden Power Grass, and my opponent has a Swampert out, I'd say 'Where's HP Grass when you need it?' My opponent would usually laugh at my misfortune, thinking I have HP Fire, due to my comment, then I KO with HP Grass. :)

I can understand if people are against lying though. You can just ignore the opponent's comments if you want to take precautions though.

Destiny Bond?

what are you talking about?

and lying about PP is a mindgame when your opponent is "lazy," which I'd say is perfectly legitimate and sometimes worthwhile to abuse. It's kind of "gay" but it's how the game works, just like it doesn't tell you how much damage Expert Belt Tyranitar "should do" compared to Choice Band or whatever, despite the fact that technically you can figure it out on your own, and just often won't bother.

what are you talking about?

Have you ever come across a lead that has tried to Destiny Bond yours to oblivion? To beat it, you have to avoid damaging it until it has used Destiny Bond 8 times, and you have to PP count to know when they have used all their Destiny Bonds up. It helps if your lead has a damaging move that can't hit the opponent since many Destiny Bonders I've seen carry Taunt.

Not much of a discussion since Pokemon requires you to manage information that you obtain. If you dont want people to lie about it, ignore them or count everything yourself.
