Swine flu hitting everywhere

Luckily, the virus hasn't made it to my neck of the woods in western PA yet.

There's still a huge uproar going on. ._. I'd really like to know exactly how much of the "news" is fact, and how much is paranoia/the media milking the panic.

Of course, once cases start showing up in Pittsburgh, I'll be with everyone else in the area running for cover. And probably skipping school for a few days in my own way of milking our newest pandemic.

Ok first thing first. For those that have said this is untreatable, you are dead wrong. Standard flu medications work extremely well against this and as long as you treat yourself well and rest like you would with regular influenza, recovery is no different. People in Mexico died from poor medical treatment and poor immune systems. The CDC (Center for Disease Control) has already said they do not feel it is worth it to produce a vaccine at this point because it would halt production on next years winter batch. If things change, they will order a vaccine be made (probably by Pfizer) and they have already stockpiled specimens for quick development of the vaccine. Please do not cause more panic than needed with false information.

Wash your hands regularly, take large amounts of Vitamin C and get your needed sleep. If you start to feel sick, begin taking flu meds from your local pharm. and stay home and sleep. If not better after a few days, see your doctor as he/she will issue scrip strenght meds.

Health asociations here in Mexico are saying that the WORST thing you can do is to go to the pharm and buy unprescripted stuff, most people that died where either because, they waited until they felt really bad to get help, and, people who started taking unprescripted stuff, that made the virus more resistant.

Here in Mexico city the situation is very dense, we have no classes until may 6 (including universities, and I had exams, dammit), cinemas, soccer, and everything is closed, and there is a posibility that the metro is shut down, and I know cases of friends with dead family. Capcom should film the city for a while and use it for the intro of next resident evil, everybody here is using that doctor's mask :cloud:

And again there are people who are saying that government is hiding the real numbers -because hospitals are oversaturated atm-, you also have those conspiracy theorists freaks, but why worry if we will never know if thats true.

Remember, the problem is not the "mortality" of this virus, it is its extremly contagious nature, the media is giving hype to this stuff, but its actually helping the situation, if not, people wouldn't give this any importance, and we would be seeing half of this city sick/dead/paranoic.

Don't let fear get the better of you, folks.

It isn't even close to being an epidemic, and a 2% mortality rate (mostly among children and the elderly) is terrible, but hardly catastrophic.

Also keep in mind that Bird Flu was supposed to be 'the big one' about two years ago, and it went as fast as it came. A 'global killer' comes around about twice a decade, and rarely turns into anything but ratings for cable news.

Just add these flu victims to the list of people whose lives could have been saved or otherwise improved but werent because of "pro-life" conservatives.
Are you like 12 years old?

And I thought I was the only one...

I sure hope there aren't any cases near me, I'll overreact and ask to leave school.

Or in DC, I'm going there this weekend. Stupid pigs.

Hello there.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/8020676.stm?b

Swine flu hits México, apparently it's gotten 149 of 'em.

Several cases reported elsewhere, although not nearly as many.

What I want to know is how humans got infected to start with… a one-off mutation of the original virus? Did someone fuck a pig? Several sources have denied bioterrorism as a possibility, so…

Don't pick your nose!
I'd hardly say Swine Flu is hitting everywhere; 149 people in Mexico isn't even a whole lot considering we're talking about a country. Besides that, Mexico doesn't have the best health care or sanitation around (you get Montezuma's revenge if you drink the tap water) so I would expect mortality rate to be higher than it would be in the US.

And no, nobody fucked a pig. Remember that cold you had during the winter? ... You didn't get that from fucking your mother.

This is where border-hopping presents very real, immediate, tangible problems...

~1,300 PEOPLE IN MEXICO CITY

That is not 149. A city is not a country. I am really bothered by this outbreak especially since I live in southern CA. There have apparently been cases popping up all over the U.S. and some cases have been reported in Spain and New Zealand. This virus is also a different strain than has been seen previously that has human-to-human transmission, greatly increasing danger.

Mexico City likely has the highest concentration of people anywhere in Mexico, and likely the country's most sophisticated transportation system, so you should expect a 'high' number of infections. Living in Southern California obviously puts you at higher risk, but I really wouldn't worry too much. If things get bad, the border will be sealed. Airports closed. There IS vaccination, and it's a matter of being prepared by manufacturing vaccinations - now. In the meantime, make a profit and invest in pharmaceutical companies that produce the stuff.

Yeah, why not aisling all the mexicans from the world while they die from this epidemic without helping them, VERY NICE IDEA!

Aisling a whole country WONT solve this problem. The best way is to help each others, not just closing frontiers and let the mexicans die when they dont even have the damn fault of this.

Even though at this point in time, I don't see it as extremely necessary but buddy, haven't you ever heard of a quarantine? If it gets crazy down there in Mexico, I don't want a bunch of sick people to be traveling around the world spreading it. I doubt the borders will just be shut-down and Mexico would be left for dead anyway. Medical teams from larger nations will probably be sent in to help the situation.

Another huge problem with it starting in Mexico, is that Mexico is a top vacation destination so you have people around the entire world going into the infected area. They get sick, bring it home, and the virus spreads globally really quickly.

Agreeing with Mr Happy. People have already been infected from other places, and its confirmed. (USA, UK, Canada, Spain, etc.)

Since there are already infected persons, closing everything wont do any help. If people really preocupated about the situation right now, and since you guys seem ro agree that Mexico's health care isnt good, why not bringing a special health care to argue about the problem more in-depth and not just talking about it and suspending classes?

This is utterly asinine. Just because the disease has already spread does not mean that seeking to contain it as much as possible is at all a bad idea. And what do you even mean by "bringing a special health care [sic] to argue about the problem more in-depth"?

On an irrelevant note, the official moniker should henceforth be "Mexican flu"; after all, swine aren't kosher.

EDIT: Swine (Mexican?) flu is on Google Maps: http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=U...39375,-110.390625&spn=15.738151,25.488281&z=5

Im live in queens but I go to bronx science which is a couple subway stops from a daycare that is said to have been affected by a certain strain of the flu

With that, i mean that some country with advanced health care like USA (because it seems Mexico sucks in the health departament) to send a specialized health care team to help with the sick people, since it seems USA has the answer to it.

Ladies and gentlemen, Captain Trips has been let loose.

Baby, Can You Dig Your Man?

but seriously

i don't see what all the hoopla is about if it's just a nastier version of the flu that responds to antibiotes. i mean, so what? it's curable.

IMO, I find everything very weird. Swine Flu breaks out and then conviniently conficker comes along and goes online... seems like we got to avoid EVERYTHING lol

Relatively, but I don't think that my intelligence has to do the issue at hand or with proving me wrong, which I have no problem with.

Please, feel free.

There is no cure for influenza, of any strain.

The flu itself can be particularly dangerous, now commonly in elderly/young kids, but the age of the victims to this strain is about middle-aged. People with developed, (mostly) healthy immune systems.

Why are people taking this so lightly, lol? Now I understand that the people wearing medical masks in places that are unaffected / barely affected to be a bit extreme this can still be serious.

Indeed, schools, parks, and cinemas are closed all over mexico, we're pretty bored here, while on the frontiers, they're checking the people's body temperature before they go, this way, the virus won't get through.
As far as i know about the virus, i heard its a variation of the Swine Flu, that's why, all the vaccines were kinda useless, not totally though, but, yeah, we're screwed O_O;

It looks like the Republicans got it exactly right when they stripped $420 million from the stimulus package that was specifically allocated to combat pandemic flu. Fiscal responsibility FTW! Just add these flu victims to the list of people whose lives could have been saved or otherwise improved but werent because of "pro-life" conservatives.

Obviously the place for this post. Take your far superior intellect somewhere else. Why should the government be combating flu anyway?

This really isn't a big deal. It's treatable just like every other flu...There's a lot of hype and news coverage because scary stories sell.

Why should the US provide any medical coverage for mexico? If private companies or nonprofit companies want to help out that's up to them but i really don't think the US should be responsible for Mexico's health care.

wow... do you really think they are referring to combating Mexico's flu outbreak, or is it possible in your world for the US to becoming infected...oh wait, the US is infected and that is why the government is stockpiling antiflu medications in the states that have confirmed cases.
