DO NOT ASK FOR ROMS OR YOU WILL BE INFRACTED
Come to #stark for real time discussion on HGSS info as they are released!
If you plan on helping with move tutors, make sure you don't use up one time tutors that may or may not exist.

It's that time again! Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver come out next week! Who knows what metagame changes will occur because of this? That's not what this thread is for however. The Competitive Pokémon thread (and the Move Tutor Thread, if we get more) will be posted when we start to get info on new moves and tutors. For now, however, lets keep our discussion in game. And on topic please. Mod will be watching this topic MUCH more closely. (Let's not have this thread end up in Trou Du Cul this time shall we?) Here is what we know so far:

  • Johto Pokédex is mostly the same, with Pokémon that evolve by moves from gen 4 being in the Johto dex.
  • Battle Frontier west of Olivine City, appears to be a clone of Platinum's Battle Frontier.
  • West of Cianwood City is a new Safari Zone. New to this Safari Zone, is the ability to move around it's 6 section to change its appearance.
  • GSC PokéBalls return, as do Apricorns.
  • A new Pokéthalon appears, with ten Athletic competitions that involve Touch Screen. Apricons can be turned into drinks to boost Pokémon's stats.
  • Pal Park replaces the Kanto Safari Zone.
  • Red is still in Mount Silver.
  • You can trade with DPP as soon as you get the Pokédex.

Concerning Pokémon you can catch:
  • Ho-oh and Lugia can be caught in both at Level 45 in their respective games, in the opposite game, they are found at level 70.
  • Raikou and Entei are runners that can be caught at Level 40. Suicune is caught outside of Bill's house in Kanto at Level 40 as well.
  • Groudon (Level 50) is in SoulSilver, Kyogre (Level 50) is in HeartGold, and if you have both in the same game you can catch Rayquaza at Level 50.
  • A special Notched Ear Pichu with Pain Split is available when you get the Shiny Pichu event.
  • With the Movie Arceus, you can get either a Level 1 Giratina, Dialga, or Palkia with their respective orbs.
  • The legendary birds are all at level 50. Articuno is in Seafoam Island, Zapdos is outside the Power Plant, and Moltres is in Mount Silver.
  • Mewtwo is at level 70 in Cerulean Cave.
  • The Lati Twins are runners around Kanto at level 35.
  • The level 50 Snorlax is still outside Diglett Cave.
  • The Kanto and Hoenn Starters are available at Level 5.

Information about the PokéWalker:
  • Pedometer that gives your Pokémon experience and happiness as you walk, but you can only transfer 1 at a time.
  • You can capture Pokémon.
  • Items can be found there.
  • If you transfer Draco Meteor Jirachi over, you can unlock a secret area.
  • Pikachu with Fly has been hinted at to be catchable on the PokéWalker.

Discuss away, but keep on topic.

Looking forward to this.

From what I've read into, Famitsu have rated it 37/40 (pretty damn excellent) which puts it above Platinum in their reviews. Apparently the plot is similar to the original, but has a very different feel. I wonder what they mean by that.

According to Serebii; The 3 kanto birds are (again) returning. Nothing detailed is there at the moment. Except that they'll be in the game. Moves, Locations and level are unknown at the moment.

Has anybody had a chance to read the Famitsu review? A quantitative score isn't much good without a qualitative one.

In pokebeach's map, they announced three new regions. One of them was the Safari Zone. One of the other ones is (probably) the Pokeathlon. I wonder what's the last one...?

The Kanto birds are confirmed, just nothing else is know about them. xD

Also, remember back in Yellow when you got on your bike Pikachu disappeared? Will the Pokemon following you do that too? I wonder.

I am so looking forward to this.

If the new Frontier is a "clone" of Platinum, as the pictures surgest, I look forward to seeing if the AI's pokemon have changed (like they did from D/P to Plat)

Is it confirmed or mentioned at all that Ho-oh and Lugia will be catchable in the opposite version, like they were in the origional GS games? (Rephrased, will Lugia be in HG and Ho-oh in SS?)

The birds are not 101% confirmed yet; Serebii only said the picture's from a Japanese imageboard, but he didn't say his usual "hey guys it might be a fake"; considering he has his ways to get inside info, it's possible he knew about the birds since the games were announced but was being professional and not letting anything leak by himself.

Just curious to see if I have these facts straight:

(lvl 45) Ho Oh and Lugia are Pre Elite 4
(higher level) Ho oh and Lugia are Post Elite 4
Groudon and Kyogre are Post Elite 4

I'm waiting the most for is the moveset changes for the starters. Can't wait for Feraligatr and Typhlosion to get some kickass attacks.

I think the version mascot is obtainable Pre Elite 4, and the opposite is obtainable when you talk to some old guy in Pewter City.

regarding the legendary pokemon nintendo seems to be going a bit insane with the amount of them in these games it pretty much got me to believe that these were the last pokemon games but that's pretty much not possible.either way looking forward to these.

edit:also i am really stoked on finally getting my own kickass dogs.

Several people said that the large number of legendaries is most likely Nintendo trying to phaze out the need for GBA games, due to the DSi not having a GBA slot (and thus making Pal Parking impossible), which I'm more inclined to believe than that they're not going to make any more Pokemon games.

Personally, I'm hoping that Nintendo didn't let us down and actually upped the trainer levels in Kanto. I'm also curious as to what exactly the supposed "increased importance" of the kimono ladies are.

I'm hoping Mewtwo is in the games because I've been dying to SR for one forever without having to delete my FR save file. Given the 76457834367 events with special moves, I hope he also gets something cool.

Also,
With the Movie Arceus, you can get either a Level 1 Giratina with Shadow Sneak, Dialga with Metal Burst, or Palkia with Hydro Pump with their respective orbs.
I'm not too familiar with ubers but these are some very cool moves. Dialga's Metal Burst would be an interesting, albeit a bit gimmicky, addition to its movepool for non-STAB Focus Blasts running amok or maybe random EQs. Too bad it does only 150% damage according to the movedex rather than double the damage like Counter and Mirror Coat do. Giratina-O will probably get a big boost from awesome STAB priority that would more easily beat Mewtwo and Deoxys-A and clean up random crap. And now that Palkia gets Hydro Pump, it can officially claim probably the best receiver of STABs in the game.

Me too as he's one of my favorite pokemon. If the birds are in, that'll make me a little mad because they're already in platinum and Mewtwo could've been in instead of them.

If mewtwo is in the game, im hoping it's at level 50, plus they have a way to teach it explosion.... Just have to wait and see i guess...

Yeah, it's kind of redundant. It would be really cool if Cerulean Cave were open this time around so you can go catch him, but I doubt it if it hasn't been announced yet, so close to the release date.

@ViperGTS: You mean Selfdestruct?
(I agree, though. They should have a Selfdestruct tutor.)

I wonder if they'll do like they did in FRLG and put in one-time tutors for moves that were available as TMs in GSC but not now. Could be interesting.

Hopefully I'll be able to get Suicune with decent IV's/Nature unlike FR/LG where iirc only HP IV is random for the three, while the rest is 0-5.

Nah, just make those three tutors in Johto Frontier teach every needed move at the cost of BPs. One-time tutors are simply horrible.

How will the GSC balls appear in Platinum?

Probably as PokéBalls.

Sure you will, roamers have non-glitched IVs since Emerald.
