Aggron: No longer the retarded child of Rhydon and Registeel

I have to agree that aggron is better in OU play however I don't see that as a reason to not allow in UU play. I know OU is determined by usuage; but I think they should move him to UU and allow him there so everyoone can have the fun of playing with the love child of tyranitar and metagross lol

Edit: I myself have used him in both. I found that in UU the rock polish set is quite effective as long as donphan, quagsire, and registeel if it has eq are out of the way. As scarfs are less common in UU then OU aggron outspeeds alot of stuff and can OTK all those frail sweepers that think they are cool. Also besides those counters few pokemon carry earthquake while the vaccum wave/ mach punch is only used by blaziken, toxicroak and top. I just hope that he stays avialable to UU because it is fun with him even though he isn't perfect.

I built a UU team around rock polish aggron feel free to give it a rate.

I've been using SubLiechi RP Aggron in OU for a few battles and I have to say, it's like someone strapped a nuke to SubPetaya Empoleon. It's incredible and will usually tear through two or three Pokemon every match and is very easy to set up. I'll bring it out five turns in and suddenly it's lategame. It's that good.

At a guess, 252 Speed, 252 Attack, to maximise the boosts.

The brilliant thing about Aggron, is that it's defensive stats are better than Skarmory's, collectivly, in the sand, they're higher than Blissey! Aggron's Subs are fearsomely bulky. If something uses Outrage, bring in aformentioned RP Sub Aggron, take a hit, sub, Rock Polish as they continue Outrage (Which dosen't even break the sub, short of boosted Salamance)/Switch, then, either attack, or continue set-up.

Focus Punch is a decent move for a Sub set, meaning Aggron has 2 BP 150 moves. However, Earthquake is equally good, if only because of 'Quakehead', and lack of needing a sub up.

Specially defensive Aggron in the sand is possibly the best switch in for a Salamance in the whole metagame. Choiced sets are actually set-up fodder. It can come in on Draco Meteor all day. It only 'fears' earthquake, but if you have a Scarfgon/Latias in the wings, and predict EQ, that's Salamance dead or forced out anyway.

Speaking of, Latias and Aggron cover each other perfectly. Latias is immune to Ground, and resists Water and Fighting, while Aggron resists Dragon, Ice, Ghost, and Dark.

I'm surprised a Scarf revenge killer set is not listed here. With a Choice Scarf and a Jolly nature, Aggron can outspeed and OHKO some major threats in the UU metagame, namely Choice Specs + Tinted Lens Yanmega, Roserade, and others

Failing to outspeed even the positive base 100s with a Choice Scarf, and sacrificing an attacking boosting nature doesn't sound too appealing to me.

There are plenty of pokemon in UU who perform that role better, namely Moltres(who can lead your team and scout with U-turn or take out lead Yanmega, if they stay in), Houndoom, Blaziken, and Magmortar. These obviously don't present the same physical threat as Aggron, but there are simply too many bulky grounds to run a Jolly nature and no attack boosting item.

Nice, I am glad you like it! Once Scarfers and random priority users are eliminated Aggron can easily come in and wreck an entire team. Nice to see other people using it.

What ev spread do you use for sub-liechi rp aggron? I would like to test that sometime.

Its on the OP...but if your to lazy here it is:

It is the simple 4 HP/252 Atk/252 Spe. Jolly is the preferred nature because it allows you to outrun some scarfers such as Adamant Heracross and Timid (or Naive) Scarftrans. If you want to go Adamant, thats cool because it facilitates a 525 Attack stat once you get the Leichi boost.

Have any of you found Aggron extremely punishing to stall teams? Head Smash wrecks the ForryBliss or SkarmBliss combo, hurts the Rotom appliances badly, and hurts phazers like Vaporeon or Gyarados hard. The only thing it can't get through are Swampert and Hippowdon, which can easily be solved by using Celebi. Also being immmune to Sandstorm (and getting an added benefit) and Toxic Spikes helps a lot.

Speaking of Celebi, lets discuss good team partners. I have already mentioned Zapdos but it went largely unnoticed. To kick it off, I will post a support Celebi set that will help Aggron sweep much easier.

Celebi
Celebi is a great Aggron partner for several reasons.
  • Has very good Synergy with Aggron, resisting Ground, Fighting and Water, while Aggron resists Bug, Dark, Ghost, Flying, Ice and Poison(lol).
  • Celebi eliminates Bulky Waters and Bulky Grounds via STAB or can wear them down with Leech Seed.
  • Lures in Scizor, allowing Aggron to set up easily on a Pursuit or X-Scissor.

~Leech Seed
~Recover
~Grass Knot

With Celebi's impressive defensive bulk and access to Leech Seed, it can make a fine partner to Aggron. Paralysis helps as it slows down any Scarfers that will ruin your Rock Polish Aggron, and helps allow Band or Life Orb versions to sweep easier. Leech Seed is primarily an annoying move, allowing you to sap HP from your opponent and wears down Bulky Waters and Grounds such as Swampert, Suicune and Vaporeon. Recover is almost critical; it allows you to become even more annoying and keeps your surivability up. Grass Knot is a nice, reliable move to help you wear down those trying to end your Aggron sweep.

The EV's gives you maximum bulk and allows you to survive Tyranitar's Crunches, allowing you to switch Aggron in and do some start your sweep. Celebi will have trouble getting through Heatran and Scizor, so having something to get through both of these is helpful. Infernape is probably your best bet, however, it must be wary of Earth Powers coming from Heatran.

EDIT: Ok, this is important. When using Substitute/Leichi Aggron, it is critical that you do NOT have any EV's in HP, and have an IV of 30 for HP. If you run 4 EV's in HP, you will have an HP stat that is not divisible by four, so the new EV spread is this:

252 Atk/4 SpD/252 Speed
30 HP

Thank you!

Aggron stinks in UU. I tried both the Rock Polish and SubRise sets in the past week and they haven't been successful. Technicians like Hitmontop and Ambipom get an easy sweep. Dugtrio and Donphan can easily come in and get rid of you. Azumarill and Feraligatr can check you and get a free setup. You miss a few key OHKOs with the rock polish set, rendering it nearly useless. Mismagius can take advantage on a revenge kill, OHKOing you with HP Fighting if you stay in, and setting up Nasty Plot if it predicts you switching out.

I have to agree that aggron is better in OU play however I don't see that as a reason to not allow in UU play. I know OU is determined by usuage; but I think they should move him to UU and allow him there so everyoone can have the fun of playing with the love child of tyranitar and metagross lol

I built a UU team around rock polish aggron feel free to give it a rate.

There's no "moving him" to UU or OU. He stays in the tier he is until his usage in the tiers goes up to a point where he moves automatically.

If he sees the most usage in UU and not enough in OU, he'll move to UU. Conversely, if he ends up seeing enough use in OU battles, he'll graduate all the way to OU and be unusable in UU. That's just how the tiering works - if a pokemon is used enough, it'll move up, if not, it won't. The only tiers that aren't usage related are BL and Uber, because they are ban lists.

Also, as soon as I'm able to, I want an Aggron on my doubles Sand pass. Anyone have any ideas for what he could do in doubles?

I really like Celebi as a partner. I might consider a Screen over Leech Seed, to provide Aggron with extra time to setup, if he is indeed the Rock Polish variety.
Likewise, most of the Levitating Ghost and Psychic provide Aggron with good synergy. Rotom Forms, Gengar and Mismagius all threaten Water types with Thunderbolt, while luring in Tyranitar and Scizor. Rotom Forms can setup Reflect, and even burn the likes of troublesome Swamperts, while providing para support.

Slowbro makes an interesting combonation with Aggron on paper. He can take Water/Fighting attacks aimed at Aggron, Thunder-Wave, Recover, setup Screens.

I've played wtih Aggron a bit, but I need more time. I think Choice Band is definitely the variety I'll like the most in OU, although I want to Magnet Rise a chance as well. Even a set where Aggron runs Thunder-Wave on his own in a more supportive role could be fun.

Call me strange, but I run these two together to some nice success (and it's fun too!):
306.png
308.png

These are now two of the most potent wallbreakers, launching off STAB attacks that 2hko even the best of walls and strangely these two actually cover each others weaknesses relatively well -

- Aggron covers Medicham's ghost weakness and 4x resists flying
- Medicham covers Aggron's Fighting weakness, although I run a Cresselia aswell to cover ground and fighting more efficiently.

Aggron
306.png

Aggron @ Choice Band
Ability: Rock Head
Nature: Adamant
EVs: 252HP/252Atk/4Def
- Head Smash
- Earthquake
- Aqua Tail
- Double Edge

With a Choice Band attached, Aggron manages to 2hko or OHKO the best of walls - Forretress and Skarmory are both 2hkoed. This also puts huge dents in anything that switches in, bar Hippo and Pert. The EVs give Aggron the most bulk possible, which gives it amazing defences under Cresselia's Reflect.

Medicham
308.png

Medicham @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Pure Power
Nature: Adamant
EVs: 4HP/252Atk/252Spe
- Hi-Jump Kick
- Psycho Cut
- Thunder Punch
- Ice Punch

Medicham is always underestimated due to its frailty, but after Aggron has weakened or defeated their physical walls Medicham really shines - often bringing me back from 3-1 situations. Medicham also weakens Aggron's usual counters aswell, doing hefty damage to Swampert and Hippowdon - although the latter always annoyingly manage to Slack Off the damage.

Aggron and Medicham create a two word saying:
Wanna? Lose.

I am tired of seeing people running 4th coverage slot on choiced Medicham. Trick is superior IMHO. Cripples counters, mang!

I'm thinking of maybe running heal bell for more of a cleric role, but I'm not really sure since everything on this set is really useful

EDIT: I'm tired of people running Aqua Tail on CBGron, it only hits two pokemon harder than Head Smash, same with Double Edge (which never hits harder than HS). They might have less BP but the elemental punches give much better coverage (Breloom, Gliscor, Flygon and Bronzong can no longer take a hit, Forretress gets OHKOd now).

I just wanna throw out the possibility of using Zoom Lens over Stone Plate since Zoom Lens increases the chance that Head Smash will hit by 20%. This essentially means that Head Smash goes from an 80% accuracy move to a 96% accuracy move. Along with that boost, Aqua Tail gets a 20% boost, going from 90% accuracy to essentially a 100% accurate water move. But, for those using Toxic, don't worry as it also increases Toxic's accuracy from 85% to essentially a 100% accurate Poison move. Just throwing out the idea of Zoom Lens. Wonder if anyone will test it. =D

- LB -

EDIT: Mountain Dewgong, the battle that you posted isn't accurate due to the fact that HS has a 20% chance to miss. So if you hit 6 times in a row, you're one lucky bastard. Since it only has a 26.21% of hitting 6 times in a row without missing. (.8 x .8 x .8 x .8 x .8 x .8 = .262144)

Zoom Lens increases critical-hit ratio so I think you're confusing it with Wide Lens. Wide Lens only increases accuracy by 10% though so I'd much rather go with the 30% boost of LO, the 20% STAB boost of Stone Plate or just good ol' Leftovers. Wide Lens is a waste here, people really shouldn't be so paranoid about missing; Rock Head Head Smash is still one of the best moves on the game regardless of its less than stellar accuracy.

Zoom Lens Raises accuracy 20% if the holder moves after the target.

Way to go Smogon Item analysis.

If it's 10% I don't think that it's worth it then. But, MD's battle log is still inaccurate since you have a very low chance of hitting 6 times in a row. Maybe if you could win by missing a couple, that'd be great.

Yeah, the item analysis is currently wrong. I checked it in-game and it's definitely critical-hit ratio.

Even if that wasn't the case, like Lemmiwinks said in the other thread (and I don't know why you felt obliged to post the same thing in both threads), it still wouldn't be worth it as there are so many other items that are much better.

I mentioned this on Shoddy earlier but it seems as though Salamence could also be a good partner for Aggron in OU. He resists Fight/Ground/Water whereas Aggron resists Dragon/Rock/Ice. Perhaps more importantly though, Salamence is probably the last Pokemon on the game who you want to give a free turn to so Mence loves the prospect of a teammate that is so good at luring Ground and Fighting attacks.

Yeah, the item analysis is currently wrong. I checked it in-game and it's definitely critical-hit ratio.

The Scope Lens is what you're thinking of, I believe (which, like you said, boosts crit hit by one stage). Zoom Lens boosts accuracy by 20% if you go second and Wide Lens just gives a 10% boost, period, at least according to my Platinum file.

Aggron @ Stone Plate
Rock Head
Adamant (+Atk, -SpA)
124 HP / 252 Atk / 132 Spe
- Screech
- Head Smash
- Earthquake/Aqua Tail
- Magnet Rise

Similar to my previous set, only this time, Screech over Toxic. After a Screech, standard Skarmory is OHKO'd by Head Smash without SR up, so you can lower your Speed to outspeed 8 EV Scizor, as you do not have to outspeed to deal with Skarmory.

Screech can force a lot of switches, as Head Smash already hit most of the game for ridiculous damage, but Screech turns the few that could survive two hits into fodder (an example of the sheer power, 252/252 +Def Cresselia has a 58.97% chance of being OHKO'd after SR and Screech). As such, this Aggron set thoroughly enjoys having Toxic Spikes and SR up more than other sets.

Me and you were discussing that on Shoddy, I think that is a pretty good set. Come in on Bronzong, Magnet Rise while they try to EQ you, Screech it and fire off Head Smashes, nice set fms.

The only thing I don't like about it is Bronzong runs so many support moves, you run into some problems in that it gets potentially 2 turns to set up things.

Reflect's the only one Aggron hates though. Bronzong's easy to deal with as long as he doesn't Reflect.

I still like it since it pseudo phazes and still deals with the same bulky Ground types for the most part.

As such, this Aggron set thoroughly enjoys having Toxic Spikes and SR up more than other sets.

did you do the damage calcs with skarmory taking neutral damage or resisting HS? the reason that you have to outrun skarmory is that roost makes skarmory resist head smash, so you have to hit it before it can roost

IIrc, if at 100%, Roost doesn't do anything at all(similar to Rest), so after the first Roost, he can OHKO, which means Skarmory isn't getting anything done.
