Windows 7

is anyone else planning on getting this?
I cannot wait for Windows 7,
my current laptop, (with windows vista) has a virus,
and supposedly, adding windows 7 should cure it.
so, anyone else?

I plan on getting it. And a note to college students, since the previous topic I made has disappeared:

If you go here and enter a valid .edu e-mail address, you can get Windows 7 for $30.

Nice, getting a laptop in the near future, so I'm really hoping it doesn't suck.

I do not know about the newer versions, but Windows 7 through at least August (I cannot remember if the first betas had the problem, but it sure as hell has for a long time) has a HUGE problem with displaying pictures. Colors change, details disappear, and it lags between picture loading. If you F11, most of the problems go away, but still. So something to consider waiting for them to fix before getting this if you have problems with illegally or legally obtaining another picture manager.

IMO, it would still be best to buy it whenever they're doing any sort of promotion (if any sort of reduced prices appear at launch), even if you wait to install it until later.

I'm partitioning the beta (at least I think it's the beta), and it's much better than Vista. Not that that's saying much.

I'll probably get it next time I upgrade and get a new laptop maybe. I think I'll make a point of not purchasing it and I'll probably get one of my buddies to hook me up with one of the enterprise editions that don't require a CD key or just torrent it.

I don't have any reason to want to change operating systems from XP since most of the time I'm in linux anyway.

Microsoft should just release an updated version XP, why try to fix perfection?

Those enterprise versions that don't require a CD key get blacklisted eventually. I was running the enterprise version of Office 2007, and a recent update to Vista detected it as pirated and disabled it :(

There are ways to get around all that, most blatantly to disable the updating features because they're rarely used for anything useful anyway. Or just use open office which can be painful but at least it's free.

Why would they update XP? XP sucks. I can't go back to it. Been using Windows 7 since June or so. Windows Vista from January 2007 - June-ish 2009.

Huh? You mean with Windows Picture Viewer or whatever? Don't think I had that issue but then again, I'm pretty sure I installed Irfanview as soon as I installed Windows. So much faster than the stock image viewer.

If by "adding Windows 7" you mean "it'll delete everything including my virus" sure... I'd completely wipe your current PC. Back up your important files (schoolwork, photos, videos) and start anew. Or install Malwarebytes and run it.

depends which virus. I was hit by a nasty little bugger one recently (totally my fault - I downloaded an .exe file from a warez site with nary an antivirus, thinking 'this will be funny if this goes wrong') and it was totally impossible to get rid of.

anyway. I'm sticking with XP for now, will get a mac later perhaps. can't be fucked with 7 after attempting to use Vista 'windows explorer has stopped responding'. What a failure.

No, find no reason to stop using XP/Fedora. However, if I do decide to get a laptop, then it might be worth buying it pre-installed.

I don't really plan on changing my XP OS. First off, XP is compatible with alot of programs, whereas the other Windows Operating Systems are still in early development and have many bugs. As for the Virus issue, you should try to get a hold of a program called "DeepFreeze", It will keep your computer from changing anything, that includes any viruses from infecting your computer. All you need to do is restart it.

From the reviews I've had so far it had pretty positive comments so I may really look forward to using it but now,I guess I will just have to resort to XP since bugs cannot be avoided since 7 is still fresh from the oven.

I've had Windows 7 Professional for free for a few months already since I have access to the MSDN Academic Alliance program through my university, which allows me to download a good number of Microsoft stuff :D

I'd also recommend (if you haven't already done it) creating a second partition specifically for data (videos, music, pictures, etc...). For example, on my computer I have a 'VistaOS' partition and a 'DATA' partition. That way when I install Windows 7 in the future (I plan on doing a clean install), all my data will be safe and I only have to work with the OS partition. This isn't very hard to do and comes in very handy in the long run (if something happens, for any reason, to your OS partition [like that virus you got], your data would be safe). Of course, still always backup you data :P

Yeah Vista had it shares of problems, but still try to give Windows 7 a chance! From my experience it's much improved from Vista (at least "out of the box", I have tweaked Vista settings quiet a bit and it runs beautifully on my computer, but Windows 7 still runs even better when seeing my brother's computer using it!). Also, Windows 7 is much more friendly in older computers than Vista. My 5y/o Dell Inspiron 600m laptop runs it just great, something that it couldn't do with Vista.

I like this article that I just read, it's basically a quick summary of Windows 7 features.

Why would they update XP? XP sucks.

What. XP is the best OS microsoft has ever produced. It's the only usable one in my opinion. Why would they update straight away, microsoft have proven over and over again that they don't know how to produce a product that is secure and works at the deadlines they give.

I understand that the massive amount of beta testing may have improved windows 7 from the average windows operating system release but I'd still advise people to stick with XP for a bit longer.

I don't really see why anyone would NEED to upgrade anyway, does anyone actually use any microsoft applications other than explorer? I pretty much use third party applications across the board. Anything that Microsoft has made is usually clunky and never updated. Or it's clunky, slow and rife with advertisements like Windows Live.

tl;dr If you've got no reason to update other than OOOH SHINY NEW EYE CANDY, then don't, you'll be wasting your money (should you choose to buy it) and there most likely won't be any noticable improvements.

Although, if you're running vista I'd say go ahead, install windows 7. I don't think it could get much worse lol.

I'm not planning on getting Windows 7, but I couldn't resist posting this comic:

I think 7 will be better than Vista though...

I've been using 7 since around June. The file system structure is much easier to use. And I much like being able to use all 4GB of the RAM I have in my system as well as 64-bit applications. XP x64 is an absolute pile of shit with little to no driver support. And if I have DirectX 10 available to use with my video card, I'd like to take advantage of that.

The only thing that doesn't work with Windows 7 64-bit is the hacked Dualshock 3 drivers to use my PS3 controller on my PC. More than I can say about XP.

Just wondering Master of Puppets, but what did you not like about Vista? Or are you going off what you heard on the internets?

I do use OpenOffice now, and in all actuality I have not found anything "painful" about it :)

On another note, though, I'd rather pay a minimal price ($30 in my case) for a fully-featured operating system that I know will work properly in the case of any updates.

Always read the comments posted about torrents before you download; if it's a virus some poor soul will have found that out the hard way before you do. And on the subject of upgrading, normally I wouldn't bother, but I'm building a system from scratch and need an OS (can't run Linux, as I will be using it for gaming), so a cheap copy of Windows 7 is really the best option.

For me, the interface is slower, but not terribly much so. Other than that, it actually seems a bit more stable than XP, except for the random "Synaptics Touchpad Driver has stopped working" error I get on my laptop every once and a while, yet when I click OK, the touchpad still works just fine.

I never said I disliked Vista, I just think it could be better (the UI is a bit laggy.)
(And if your getting that from the comic, I just love XKCD.)

I was referring to the comment you editted out about how "it's not saying much" that 7 will be better than Vista.

Edit: Also, in response to Abuse, XP is not the greatest operating system Microsoft has ever made. That's 7.

That's strange because I've got 6gb of ram and a current graphics card and have no problems playing games.

I'd comment on this but I don't really think that it's the operating systems fault if something "doesn't work". It's the manufacturers because they didn't include suitable drivers. Since I'm mostly a linux user I'm used to fiddling around to get things to work and I appreciate it when a manufacturer makes something that works.

Maybe you just need to look harder or something. Browse some forums. Maybe it would be good if you looked around on the

internets?

My friend gave me W7 about 2 weeks ago, I haven't bothered to install it yet, seeing as I have nothing to install it on with the recent motherboard break down of my laptop. The disc my friend gave me probably won't do anything for me, because I plan on getting my new laptop after W7 comes out, so it will just be preloaded.

Your XP, if 32-bit as it probably is, is only seeing and using 3.5 GB of that RAM. Not a big deal as a game really doesn't need to use 6GB of RAM. I like having as much as I can when I'm using Photoshop with large files though. And you can obviously play games just fine with DirectX 9 at the moment. I wasn't saying you could. Although some games do run better in DirectX 10.

The blame is on both. Windows 7 x64 does not let unsigned drivers due to security reasons. The Dualshock 3 was never meant to be used on a PC obviously and uses unofficial homebrew drivers. Oddly, the 32-bit version of Windows 7 doesn't do this.
