Nice, getting a laptop in the near future, so I'm really hoping it doesn't suck.I plan on getting it. And a note to college students, since the previous topic I made has disappeared:
If you go here and enter a valid .edu e-mail address, you can get Windows 7 for $30.
Those enterprise versions that don't require a CD key get blacklisted eventually. I was running the enterprise version of Office 2007, and a recent update to Vista detected it as pirated and disabled it :(
Huh? You mean with Windows Picture Viewer or whatever? Don't think I had that issue but then again, I'm pretty sure I installed Irfanview as soon as I installed Windows. So much faster than the stock image viewer.I do not know about the newer versions, but Windows 7 through at least August (I cannot remember if the first betas had the problem, but it sure as hell has for a long time) has a HUGE problem with displaying pictures. Colors change, details disappear, and it lags between picture loading. If you F11, most of the problems go away, but still. So something to consider waiting for them to fix before getting this if you have problems with illegally or legally obtaining another picture manager.
If by "adding Windows 7" you mean "it'll delete everything including my virus" sure... I'd completely wipe your current PC. Back up your important files (schoolwork, photos, videos) and start anew. Or install Malwarebytes and run it.is anyone else planning on getting this?
I cannot wait for Windows 7,
my current laptop, (with windows vista) has a virus,
and supposedly, adding windows 7 should cure it.
so, anyone else?

anyway. I'm sticking with XP for now, will get a mac later perhaps. can't be fucked with 7 after attempting to use Vista 'windows explorer has stopped responding'. What a failure.
Why would they update XP? XP sucks.
I've been using 7 since around June. The file system structure is much easier to use. And I much like being able to use all 4GB of the RAM I have in my system as well as 64-bit applications. XP x64 is an absolute pile of shit with little to no driver support. And if I have DirectX 10 available to use with my video card, I'd like to take advantage of that.What. XP is the best OS microsoft has ever produced. It's the only usable one in my opinion. Why would they update straight away, microsoft have proven over and over again that they don't know how to produce a product that is secure and works at the deadlines they give.
I understand that the massive amount of beta testing may have improved windows 7 from the average windows operating system release but I'd still advise people to stick with XP for a bit longer.
I don't really see why anyone would NEED to upgrade anyway, does anyone actually use any microsoft applications other than explorer? I pretty much use third party applications across the board. Anything that Microsoft has made is usually clunky and never updated. Or it's clunky, slow and rife with advertisements like Windows Live.
tl;dr If you've got no reason to update other than OOOH SHINY NEW EYE CANDY, then don't, you'll be wasting your money (should you choose to buy it) and there most likely won't be any noticable improvements.
Although, if you're running vista I'd say go ahead, install windows 7. I don't think it could get much worse lol.
I do use OpenOffice now, and in all actuality I have not found anything "painful" about it :)There are ways to get around all that, most blatantly to disable the updating features because they're rarely used for anything useful anyway. Or just use open office which can be painful but at least it's free.
Always read the comments posted about torrents before you download; if it's a virus some poor soul will have found that out the hard way before you do. And on the subject of upgrading, normally I wouldn't bother, but I'm building a system from scratch and need an OS (can't run Linux, as I will be using it for gaming), so a cheap copy of Windows 7 is really the best option.depends which virus. I was hit by a nasty little bugger one recently (totally my fault - I downloaded an .exe file from a warez site with nary an antivirus, thinking 'this will be funny if this goes wrong') and it was totally impossible to get rid of.
For me, the interface is slower, but not terribly much so. Other than that, it actually seems a bit more stable than XP, except for the random "Synaptics Touchpad Driver has stopped working" error I get on my laptop every once and a while, yet when I click OK, the touchpad still works just fine.Just wondering Master of Puppets, but what did you not like about Vista? Or are you going off what you heard on the internets?

The only thing that doesn't work with Windows 7 64-bit is the hacked Dualshock 3 drivers to use my PS3 controller on my PC. More than I can say about XP.

internets?
Your XP, if 32-bit as it probably is, is only seeing and using 3.5 GB of that RAM. Not a big deal as a game really doesn't need to use 6GB of RAM. I like having as much as I can when I'm using Photoshop with large files though. And you can obviously play games just fine with DirectX 9 at the moment. I wasn't saying you could. Although some games do run better in DirectX 10.That's strange because I've got 6gb of ram and a current graphics card and have no problems playing games.
The blame is on both. Windows 7 x64 does not let unsigned drivers due to security reasons. The Dualshock 3 was never meant to be used on a PC obviously and uses unofficial homebrew drivers. Oddly, the 32-bit version of Windows 7 doesn't do this.I'd comment on this but I don't really think that it's the operating systems fault if something "doesn't work". It's the manufacturers because they didn't include suitable drivers. Since I'm mostly a linux user I'm used to fiddling around to get things to work and I appreciate it when a manufacturer makes something that works.
Maybe you just need to look harder or something. Browse some forums. Maybe it would be good if you looked around on the
