Final Grades/GPA thread/School/University Discussion

the best way to deal with procrastination is to make yourself worry about your future and induce panic. I'm going to fail unless I study; I will be poor and make no money; I won't be successful and no woman will take me seriously; I will be mediocre, like everybody else; my life will be horrible and I will always regret it because I WAS TOO LAZY to bother. Obviously these are embellished intuition pumps, but can be true with bad habits unless you have great genius to make up for it.

That whole turn off your computer, don't look at your clock, remove distractions bullshit is exactly that, bullshit. Who the hell does that? Nobody. Plus, it's easy to say fuck it and bail on studying 1 hour. It's terrible advice because it's way too simplified and idealistic: you're not telling anyone HOW to not procrastinate, but what people who don't procrastinate do, which is obvious to anyone. I'm sure I can bullshit something myself, like plug out your computer and tell your family to not bother you or something. I know I can do that, but the problem is I can't bring myself to bother (that is procrastination: knowing what you need to do but too lazy to bother). That's why it's all about mindset and a powerful enough psychological motivation

You need a reason to strive. Some are ambitious; if you worry a lot about procrastination, then you probably aren't quite that ambitious. But anybody can feel fear and shame and that is how you overcome procrastination. If you've got some better motivating factors though then go for it but I can guarantee you that taking stock advice from google like "go to a quiet place" will not get you anywhere because you won't be able to bring yourself to do it.

Well, if you're dead-set against doing it, it's not going to get done. That's obvious. It applies to any advice that could be given.

The only thing you can do is minimise the number of excuses and make it harder to procrastinate so that once you get into studying, you don't bust out of it as easily.

the Year 11's had some mock exams at school last month. my results;
Music - C
Science Triple Award - A* (scraped it)
History - B (scraped that too)
French - A*
English - A
it's looking good so far.

Wow nice :o.
I got
Biology - A*
Chemistry - A*
Physics - A*
English Language - A*
English Lit - A
History - A
Geography - C <--- O.o
French - B

I did my Maths GCSE Proper exam in november 5th + 10th, results back Jan 14th =/
I French is my worst supject, I got a C in Geography but I was 11th best in the year lol >.<. I'm predicted A* for it though =D

also, I just got offered a scholarship for Bancroft's School. It's one of THE most prestigious private schools in England, and in fact, according to The Times, it got the 37th best A-Level results from every 6th Form in England. 170 applicants, 40 were asked back for an interview, and then 5, myself included were given a scholarship.
I'm very proud.

Wow nice :o. I can't afford private shcools =(, well, I also live in the middle of nowhere - Cornwall countryside somewhere...

Our school does block scheduling, so I only have 5 of my classes right now...

AP Calculus AB: A-
AP Physics: B
Honors Computer Science: A-
Honors English: B-
Gym: A

Current unweighted: 3.4-3.5 ish
Total unweighted: 3.0 =(
Projected SAT score (PSAT+50 due to essays being the only thing English-related I can do): 2000

The fact that this year is by far my best year is what makes this depressing. State college ftw >_>

Ooh, GCSE talk, I can actually have an input. I got my certificates recently (now in year 12).

A* - Maths
A - Physics, Chemistry, Biology, English Lang., RE
B - Geography, French, English Lit.
Distinction (A*/A) - ICT, Multimedia

I remember taking the first maths module and getting my result. It was the only GCSE exam barring one of the physics where I got full marks (I think it was out of 108, but I am saying that from memory). If you get an A* in the first module there really isn't any reason why you cannot get an A* in the others, although you might be doing a different course from what I did.

Honestly though, your experiences so far sound a lot like mine, especially geography and french. Geography was more of a joke-around subject than anything and it was pretty hilarious, but it was pretty simple to learn a lot from the supplied textbooks. You actually have to revise for french though, esp. when it comes to May and you have to learn your five speaking topics.

Anyway, I am currently revising for my A Levels...too much hard work for my liking!

I did Linear Maths, so there was no modules, just two exams. Good work getting full marks on your maths though Ashley!

TBH French was actually my second choice, but not enough people chose Triple Science in my year (it wasn't compulsory until this year). So sucks, I guess.

I'm doing AS Maths in Year 11 now, and it's annoying me because have 4 hours a week over the course of 4 months to learn what I should be learning for about 10 hours a week over a year. Great (!)

Triple Science with AQA >.<
We had 2 module tests for each 3 science areas.
3 tests in 1 day - did it twice, 4 months apart. A nightmare to revise for.
Good thing the next 3 science ones are on different days =)

I did AS maths in about 3 months last year, if you're good at GCSE maths it really shouldn't be that hard provided you are good at grasping new concepts.

C1 is really GCSE stuff, C2 is probably when you really start A-level maths but there isn't anything too hard in there but it might take you a while to grasp it since GCSE maths is really a piece of piss and is no real preparation for A-level. Keep practising and you'll be fine. Are you doing S1 or M1? S1 is really piss easy if you did GCSE Statistics, whereas M1 was harder for me since it was a whole new way of thinking, once you get into the mindset of resolving horizontal components, vertical components and whether you need cos or sin, you'll be fine, but it will take longer than C1/C2/S1 to grasp and 4 months may not be enough coming off from GCSE.

C1/C2/C3 I've done and they were a breeze.
It's M1 and M2 that's bugging me down because I didn't do GCSE Stats and I'm more used to theory than applied Maths.
Also doesn't help in that the lessons are more the teacher just talking at us than it is us doing things ourselves, which I prefer more.

That's a shitload to do in Year 11, 5 modules is a lot, further maths students did 7 modules last year and single maths students did 3.

Do you mean S1 and S2 or M1 and M2?

I did mean M1 and M2, but I'm still finding that pretty difficult for some reason.
I can grasp the concepts and do it confidently, but looking at some past papers, there's just so much long winded processes that I just find myself getting bored halfway through.

M1 and M2 are just a case of drawing pictures and working out where to put the forces, really. They're so much easier than they seem. -.- M2 can be neatly summarized as "resolve, resolve, take moments". You just have to work out horizontal and vertical forces, then any moments and you should have your answer.

So anyone else relieved about finishing American Uni apps?

I just found out that I probably won't be able to attend Canadian universities in the East because of the cost (approximately 15k-20k with residence). Unfortunately, my family is nearing the poverty line (sigh, huge shock for me when i sent in my income taxes), and obviously can't afford the tuition.

Guess it's UBC for four years. Woo.... hoo.

Anyways, anyone else catch senioritis?

I <3 the education funding loan program in Australia, it's one of the greatest contributions we have to world standards, IMO. It really annoys me when people who are qualified for an education can't afford to follow through with it, which is a preeminent problem in the USA and Canada.

Blah, shit sucks. Oh well, life isn't all about daisies and walks on the beaches is it? Plus, you got to love the 2 hour bus/sky train drive to that university from my house... lol.

How's your school going?

I catch a train for an hour and a half, and then walk for 10-15 minutes to univeristy 5 days a week during semester :P.

Currently, I am waiting to see if I get into the cheaper versions of my course this year, which is announced at the same time as high school graduates get their university offers.

3.2 this semester, immunobiology was probably the hardest class I have taken yet @__@ At least organic chemistry is over with... for now x_x;
Got an 89 in two classes for a final grade of B.. I hate how it's counted the same even if I got an 80.

Oh well.. there is always next semester!

Anyone taking the MCAT or PCAT this year?

Fix'd for you, lol. But yeah, I'm excited that i'm done. And senioritis right now? I've had it since the beginning of the year!

And btw, if you can show how your family finances changed, you can often apply for financial aid. But, I do know that US universities don't often give out financial aid to international students :/ sorry bro

Just don't hang out with your high school people. Meet new people. Not everyone in Vancouver is like that.

I'm also waiting on uni offers, only like a week away or something right? I just finished yr 12 last year. I hope I get one of the scholarships I applied for.

Ahh my spring semester starts on the 13th. I have such a short winter break. Does anyone's spring semesters star as early as mine?

Spring semester starts on Jan 19th for us. I feel like it is too long of a holiday.. since finals ended around the 15th of Dec >.< But I've known some people who got off for winter break starting on Thanksgiving @_@;

Our high school winter break was like.. Dec 23rd - Jan 2 if I remember correctly.. felt like way too short, since it was like the bare minimum.. but that was like 4 years ago for me, I don't know if they changed it since then.
