Final Grades/GPA thread/School/University Discussion

I think David Graeber is at Goldsmiths, which is pretty awesome!

I actually did not know that! That's pretty cool - I am also looking forward to following John Gray around the university and shouting CHEER UP, IT'S NOT ALL BAD YOU KNOW

edit: apparently he is not actually there? pissflaps. I was misinformed. nevermind, I will find him and shout anyway.

Oh I got one!

I just found out that I made an 86% on my Music History test today.

I know it sounds like nothing, but lets take into account that it was over 9 chapters of early music (Renaissance and before) that had composers and pieces with weird names along with terms that changed meaning almost every chapter.

Lets also take into account that the teacher makes his tests hard, and that I only spent a few minutes skimming over my study material, and also that there's only one person I know of that made a higher score than me. Most made low C's and D's.

Most of my grade is weighted on these exams, so to think that I made such a high score on the first is nice. Most people hate the class and teacher to death and how hard it is. I guess my love for early music helped me out in the end, huh?

I have a question (and I'll shorten it down quite a bit). I got a D in my freshman year science class in high school. Right now it's lowering my GPA .23 points as opposed to having an A in that class. Should I retake it my senior year (obviously the GPA difference is going to be a lot less by then but it will still probably matter) or just take an easy A class in hopes of pulling it up without directly fixing it? Oh and I'm a sophmore for the record

What are your goals? If you're wanting to get into a good school, then taking a more advanced science class and getting an A will work to offset your D.

Wait listed by two schools. One was my dream school, one was the best rated out of the ones I applied to. I thought I was an easy lock for both. FFFFUUUUUUUUU

Music History class? Last semester I had a music history class, though at the college I'm going to it was called 'Music Literature". The tests weren't that hard, and there was absolutely no book work. The tests were based off lecture, and the out of class work was listening to CDs and going to concerts. I did great on the tests, but as mentioned before, they weren't hard.

It sounds like you had a very book heavy class. Good work on your 86% then, because book heavy classes are such a bore.

Damn, midterms.
US History: 90%. Didn't study. Awesome.
English (essay): 100%. Wrote it on Blade Runner.
Algebra: 93%. Didn't study. Awesome.
Italian: 95%. Didn't study. Awesome
Earth Science: 75%. Studied for several weeks. ;___;

Do you like Earth Science?

Haha, no. The subject material is awful and lab periods of it are even worse. I do fairly well in the class though, and I had a 91% average before this midterm. To be honest, I like every field of science except for earth science.

That's probably what did you in then, yet again maybe not. Maybe you over studied?

I'm not entirely sure how the education system here pairs up with that elsewhere but I just got my prelims back for my Highers so figured it was at least something I could contribute! I'm in my penultimate year of High School.

Got an A in Maths, Human Bio, Physics and French, now just waiting on getting English back and if that's not an A I'll be pretty disappointed :( Got an average so far of 88%, but I'm pretty annoyed with myself as there are literally only 2/3 marks I've lost from things that I genuinely didn't know, the rest were all unbelievably stupid oversights in the rush of the moment - anyone else tend to get that a lot?

Just wondering if anyone has received university decisions yet from random universities. I know Canadian ones have been sending them out.

Unfortunately, U toronto, and U Waterloo (Chemistry and Honours Sciences) still have not received my predicted grades and my transcripts. McGill University (Chemistry) I missed the deadline but they let me still apply and it's obvious decisions aren't going to come out til mid late April. I missed UBC's deadline and SFU (Chemistry) still has not decided yet.

I will probably go East.

I've just finished AS levels doing History, Politics, Economics and English Language, no idea what i'm predicted but expecting something like AABB since apart from Economics the exams were pretty easy. Hoping to go and do History or History and Politics at somewhere like Sheffield, Southampton or UEA in a couple of years. I do go to the best comprehensive school in the country(Watford Grammar School for Boys) and got the best possible teachers though so I was pretty lucky.

Akuchi, what subjects did you do?

Huh, I went to WGBS too. What a small world. Well to keep with the theme of the thread I'm in third year of University on track for a 2-1 or First if I put some effort it. Finished school with 4 As in English Lang/Lit, Politics, Maths and Further Maths.

I procrastinated and missed out on a few scholarship opportunities. Now I just gotta sit back and let the university scholarships come to me. I've already been awarded a few, but it is nerve racking to wait on the ones you want.

I am eligible for full financial aid. I should have applied for Ivy League school, considering the fact that many of them practically give you a college education if your income is less than 60,000.

I got accepted into Washington University in St. Louis about a week ago, and into some safety UCs. I'm still waiting for a couple of schools, but I'm probably going choose to attend WashU

The seniors at my school have been talking about college admissions all week lol. Some are really depressed, some are happy. UC Berkeley is coming out next week, and its really popular among the people who go to my school, so there's going to be more heartbreak next week too

What are you doing for your classes, and do you get Honours at the end of your third year or your fourth like most places?

If anyone gets the chance to take a creative writing class, do it! It's a lot of fun. Most of the time you're just writing stories and analyzing your classmates' as well as reading good stories written by professionals. You might even get published!

Philosophy is cool too if you're into thinking about the meaning of life and other deep questions. While you definitely can't figure out everything with just an intro class I think it's a good starting point.

My course is English Language and Linguistics, which comprises pretty much everything you wanted to learn about language but never knew. The way it works here is that certain courses are honours courses (and in fact nowadays most courses in the top 50 or so universities will be), and a BA is three years. So basically I will graduate with honours in about 15 weeks from today.

Edexcel GCSE Applied ICT, January 2010; C.
So apparantly every year Edexcel screw up the marking and everybody gets low grades in the exam in January. anybody else ever got this? the rest of my year group suffered a similar problem. I'm supposed to be the second best ICT student in the school. first place got a D, heh.

Edexcel AS Maths; C1; B, 77/100
which I'm pleased with, frankly. I walked into that exam expecting a D or an E. the fact that I got 3rd in the class is bonus. the fact that a girl in my class got 100/100 makes me feel stupid.
BUUUUUUUT
Next year in 6th form I'll be taking Advanced Further Maths. good bye social life, hello 16 modules in two years!

while I still have two years and a month before I go to uni, I've been thinking about what to take. I'm aiming primarily for Cambridge or Imperial of London, yet in terms of degree, I'm split between Pure Mathematics or some variant of Electromagnetic Physics. that said I don't even know what I job I want after that so LOL.

A degree in Science is pretty generally useful in various roles, particularly with a focus on maths or physics; Mathematics gives you skills for numerical jobs, particularly in business, and physics tends to teach problem-solving skills that can be applied generally, not just in the one field.

Unfortunately, you won't meet the entry requirements for maths at Imperial unless they're kind to you or change their admissions criteria — quite absurdly, they demand As in every maths module at the first attempt.

the fact that a girl in my class got 100/100 makes me feel stupid.

About 3/4 of the people (including me despite the fact I had done no maths in almost a month) in my school got 100 in C1 (easier board but I think it looks the same to Universities). Can you retake, because after you see the other exams, you'll realise it's pretty much free marks? Cambridge will want an A* by the way, as will Imperial if you want to do maths.

And I've got to learn A2 further maths on my own - that's what I call fun!

Sbc - to get an A* in maths, you have to get 80% in maths altogether as well as 90 in C3 and 4, so this might be a problem for ZystraL

TBH, without sounding like a douche, it's not that hard to get an A* in Maths if you have a natural aptitude for it when it's only 90% across two modules C3 and C4, and 20% of each of C3 and C4 is coursework and comphrension respectively. C1 should be an easy 95+ if you want to do anything mathematical at a top uni, though a good B is a good result, taking it a year early. You would do better if GCSE maths wasn't so ludicrously basic as to become no preparation for A-level maths at all...

I don't think all Colleges in Cambridge make A* offers, I know that Downing haven't this year. Though I do also know someone else who got also into Cambridge and they asked him for an A* in FM which isn't too bad. I can get one if I average like 93/94 in S3 and M2 despite getting a lowish A in S2 and getting a B in FP2 thanks to a stupidly hard test.

Though cos he does FM he has to do STEP III which apparently is bloody hard since something ridiculous like 50% of those who get offers don't meet STEP. So I'd be worried more about that lol.

whoops you sound like a douche (though I will agree that 90% average in C3 and C4 is not too bad - even though I am an idiot through hard work and determination I got 96 in C3 meaning I only need 84 in C4, which is still pretttty hard, but manageable I'm guessing)
