Wired Smogon Namedrop

Hey guys, long time no see

I was reading through Wired and I came across a review of the new pokemon games. Silly me, I didn't even know there were new pokemon games! Anyways, most of the way through the review/article there's a bit of a nice little Smogon name drop.

It's been a long time for me since I've really been on here. It's been much, much longer since I actually contributed. But I still felt proud, even though I'm sure it's happened many times before, to see Smogon mentioned/linked to in as widespread a publication as Wired. So congratulations guys, and good luck going forward!

I'm pretty surprised they had someone who was aware of the competitive game. I'm hearing more people who understand it's there, but definitely nice to see it mentioned in a review - especially with a link to Smogon!

Yeah, the awareness of the competitive element of Pokémon is FAR more widespread now than it was in the late 1990's and early 2000's. It was funny to be one of the five persons who actually knew what he was doing with RBY and GSC on a board with over 200 active posters.

Wired is a reasonably big deal, so I'm fairly impressed they chose to mention us. It's indicative of what Smogon has accomplished in filling the niche. The plug doesn't hurt, either! ^_^

Oh hi guys. Funny to see an article I wrote linked here. I've been lurking Smogon for years but never joined until now. Although I do go on the Smogon shoddy battle server rather often. The fact that it took a link to something I wrote for me to join probably says something negative about me but oh well.

But I'd have to say that hiding the competitive mechanics is cool, not tired.

I don't think the mechanics being hidden is bad. I think it's bad that they're TOO hidden, and yes, there is a difference between the two. I wish the games were more open about the fact that there is this huge, deeper game underneath the surface. It's almost as if they're scared to break that outer shell.

Newer games have, to their credit, actually taken a step in the right direction. Hell, Wi-Fi on its own does a lot to create more transparency between the core game and the deeper metagame. I also particularly like how HGSS highlights Pokemon's stats depending on how they're affected by the Pokemon's nature.

but you know, opinions and all that junk

Anyway, glad you guys liked the review, even if the reason for liking it is the Smogon namedrop. I didn't think anyone here would actually pick up on it.

also hey firestorm how ya doing

i agree, wired magazine is one of the best magazines around (if not the best)

Well, either you did a helluva turnaround and cleanup or Kohler didn't know your online alias =P Congratulations on the internship.

Kohler definitely knows who I am on GAF. We shared the odd PM every once in a blue moon. Thanks for the congrats! :)
