Final Grades/GPA thread/School/University Discussion

I think I'm going to have difficulty getting a clerkship this year for my law studies for that reason. I don't really have much in the way of extra curriculars, and my academics aren't at the very very top though they're pretty good (Cs and a few Ds, mostly). If I'd only won Treasurer at the Sutekh Committee Elections (lost by narrow margin to the 4 year successful incumbent)...

I think I'm going to be relying on the good words from my teachers and so forth.

Calling bull right here, since Brown's admission percentage for a 2100 on the SATs was 7% but 30% for a 2300. If you don't have the grades don't bother. May I ask what you did to get in?

(ps: enrolling at Tufts!)

Brown is pretty damn competitive, but Wharton in itself is one of the most competitive (if not THE most competitive, in terms of both number admitted and admit rate) undergraduate programs in the nation. Look at the University of Pennsylvania's admission statistics for my GPA range:

11% had h.s. GPA between 3.5 and 3.74

And that statistic is for the whole school. Imagine how much less it must be for Wharton.

I had a very slim chance of getting in, but because I did something other than just focus on having perfect grades and scores, I was admitted. And it wasn't just luck; I admit I was very blessed, but I set myself up for success when I got deferred (I had applied ED), as I ventured into a very unique community service endeavor (no one else had ever done it in the world), and raised thousands for a few charities. That, I think, did it (and I was confident I would get in because of it). Obviously not my GPA or scores.

Yeesh, I'm so glad the fields I'm interested in don't care about where your degree is from so much as they do about what's in your portfolio >.>;; Everyone seems so stressed out about their grades - especially from standardized tests which I am absolutely terrible at.

Fuck IB exams. I have no clue what's going on in Physics. I should've switched out of HL last year when I realized we weren't being taught. Oh well. Hopefully I'll get a 3 on the exam; that's all I need.

HAI FIVE.

I have no fucking clue what I'm doing either, but I think I'm in a better position than you are. At least Communications make sense to me. Which HL options you doing?

I'm worried about every goddamned subject. Chemistry, I've forgotten random stuff, which are crucial, like ionization energy, electronegativity, acid and bases, electrochem etc. Physics = I just got owned by waves, and electricity and magnetism. History = Sigh. I can't write. Same with English. Plus I don't have enough review time for it. For math, I don't know how to do probability distributions, and statistics. Sigh.

So... fuck IB exams?

I think grades and scores are definitely important, but only up to a certain point, and once you pass that point, subjective factors become more important. GPA doesn't really mean much outside of the context of your high school so it's hard to give an example, but SAT wise, I think once you're at about the 2250 level, each additional 10 points doesn't really make any sort of difference. I didn't have shockingly good stats (~3.7/2300), but I think I managed to make myself really interesting in my application, wrote a really good essay, had unusual interests, etc, and that allowed me to get in over people from my school with marginally better stats (~3.9/2350) for example... because once you meet their "cutoff", extra points don't really mean so much.

I agree; this is true of many high-competition places. The marks are required to get you into the selection process. The subjective factors are what actually get you the place, because once you're into the first cut, most of the people are going to have pretty close academic results anyway, so it's the rest of their personal attributes that matter.

I actually have a friend at Wharton. All I can say is congrats and good luck, and be ready to work your ass off ^_^

First, I'm sorry I came off as a bit of an ass, as I'm still kinda bitter (at the schools, not at the people who got in, I'm not alone here). Anyway, the fact that you raised thousands of dollars for charities is your selling point. They want kids that go out and do amazing things. Also the fact that you didn't just volunteer but you actually raised money helped you quite a lot with the top business school in the country.

I think grades and scores are definitely important, but only up to a certain point, and once you pass that point, subjective factors become more important. Agreed. (Though you forgot to mention that admission rates jump for ED kids with your profile. High-powered schools love to see that you want them and not the other 7 Ivies or numerous Sub-Ivies). Also I've heard that there is little difference between 750-790 in individual subjects. The plateaus are 700 min, 750 is a cut above, and 800 is really a cut above. Anything in-between say 750-790 for example is comparable due to the way SAT scores can fluctuate based on the bell curve for a particular test. I got screwed in that regard, with a 770 in math that would have been an 800 the next month (two wrong).

Anyway, as a note to kind of sum up this post and my observances with the system as a whole:

To anyone wanting to apply to high level schools, do big things. Don't hesitate. Do anything and everything you can and excel as much as possible. Don't wait to do a charity "next year". Start early and show the schools that you're a dedicated person. Join sports and clubs Freshman year/Sophomore year. Participate in competitions. Then, focus on your SAT/ACT scores. Get them as high as you possibly can. Take them 2-3 times if you have to (I took the SAT twice and four different subject tests, one subject test twice). Do all of this while maintaining your GPA. If your school ranks, shoot for at least top 5 if it's a really big school, top 2 otherwise. If you like one school above the others, ED there. It helps a lot. If not, apply to a wide range of schools. I made the huge mistake of putting my eggs into all the high-end schools. I was lucky to get into one and waitlisted at two. Nothing is certain. Finally, write the applications and get them checked as many times as possible. Make them perfect, grammatically and in content.

As an addendum, if you can't pay for college, make sure you apply for every little local scholarship you can. Most of the essays overlap and you can slightly edit them. Do this even before you find out how much financial aid you're getting. Those little $500-$2000 scholarships add up if you apply to a lot of them (17 and counting, not including an omnibus in-house scholarship that ~35 local scholarships from my school came under).

I could go into a ton of detail but my post would be huge and there are experts in each field both on Smogon and in the real world. Feel free to contact me in pm or on irc (or here but I'm not going to check frequently).

In conclusion, GO JUMBOS 2014.

(sorry Blackhawk11 I've been really busy and I forgot to respond to your pm! hopefully this post covers some of the stuff)

So IB students, tomorrow, we dine in hell =/

English HL A1 Paper 1 tomorrow. I'm hoping the poem will be good.

Second week is rape. English, then physics, then history, then chemistry. For 4 straight fucking days. No breaks. All exam slots taken up.

4.45 weighted, and I still have no clue about my future...got rejected from ivy league schools...applied to a random university in Philadelphia, while my aunts keep influencing me every god-damn day to transfer next year to some renowned universities in Chicago.

Reason? To cut down the housing cost. Damn, they probably think I don't know how to get a job :P

Still, I have a silver of hope that I might be able to transfer into some better school next year after I do some research about anesthesia and participate in some activities during my freshmen year of college.

I had way too much fun doing my AP french test today. I started writing a regular essay but then got bored so I drew a huge rip in the center of the paper with a giant dragon monster tearing his way out. Also, I filled in the free response questions with the lyrics to Aux Champs Elysees. Hopefully my grader has a sense of humor...

My respect for you has exponentially grown. I like people with that kind of sense of humour Lol.

Anyways, I'll probably puncuate my essay tomorrow with "THIS IS SPARTA" and "IT'S A TARP" and cross it out so that it won't count against me.

Oooh. AP French.

I actually have my AP Spanish test tomorrow, but I don't see myself writing down the "La Bamba" lyrics as my Free Rresponse Question any time soon.

Yeah, how did you think you did today? I had English SL though, so it's easy for me! ^.^

And lucky for me, I don't have chem, otherwise next week would be a bitch!

The poem was freaking awesome. Loved it so much, so easy to write about. Wrote 9 pages/sides for the commentary. Focused mainly on the imagery.

Meh, Math SL tomorrow. Shouldn't be a bitch, unless IB decides to throw in statistics questions WITHOUT the ability to use a calculator. (And/or probability, because I suck at it)

Grades are in and I passed everything hells yeah.

IAT 405: Interdisciplinary Design Studio II - B
IAT 445: Immersive Environments - A-
CMNS 230: Cultural Industries in Canada - B+
CMNS 323W: Cultural Contexts in Advertising - B

So fucking glad this semester is over. That Design Studio course was a complete clusterfuck with some of the most terrible teachers I've ever had the misfortune of working with. Seriously contemplating a letter to the administration about them as I know I would have unanimous support from my classmates.

This is not helping get my GPA back up though =/ I want to hit 3.33 again before I graduate. Got two more semesters to do it.

Just got my final grades for the semester today, and I was pleasantly surprised at how they turned out:

CS216 Programming II - A
MATH161 Calculus I - A-
PHIL205 Professional Business Ethics - A
CHEM111 Chemistry I - A

Managing an A- in Calculus made me rather happy, since I find that subject incredibly difficult. I know there had to have been a final curve on that grade, but I'll take it! Does anyone else find a single particular subject harder than the rest like that?

I'd have to say right now, Physics takes the cake. Mainly because I just don't have enough time to focus on it.

Meh. I just checked my exam timetable for finals in November.
Saturday: Schol. Bio
Monday: Chemistry
Tuesday: Calculus
Wednesday: Physics
Thursday: BOTH English and Classical Studies.
Friday: Some respite, though largely useless because I've already studied chemistry
Saturday: Schol. Chemistry

Worst.Time table.Ever. I mean, the exams go for 3 weeks and this is how they arrange these (popular) subjects? Fuck NZ. ;)

Mine is

Monday: English HL Paper 2, Physics Paper 1,2 (total, around 5-6 hours)
Tuesday: Physics Paper 3, History Paper 1,2 (total, around 4-5 hours)
Wednesday: History Paper 3, Chemistry Paper 1,2 (total, around 4.5 hours)
Thursday: Chemistry Paper 3 (1 Hour thank god)

Mine is more condensed Lol.

And I had the first paper for English today, and am doing math tomorrow and the day after. Fun !

Sorry for the double post.

I just made Math my bitch. Aced that paper 1.

Unfortunately, Math made all the Math HL students its bitch. One of the hardest tests they've taken in their life so far. Apparently.

got all my grades today:

EAS 208 Dynamics: A
EAS 209 Mechanics of Solids: A-
EE 200 Electrical Engineering Concepts / Non-majors: B
MAE 376 Applied Math for Mechanical and Aerospace Engineers: A
CL 113 Myth and Religion in the Ancient World: A

so... 3.74 this semester. i got a 33% on my EE final because i forgot my calculator and then got points taken off for leaving things like pi as a coefficient. fuck

The fuck it did

My ass hurt after taking that bitch. It put Paper 2 to shame for sure

Friends were almost to tears after paper 1. Apparently paper 2 was alot easier.

Fucking triangles. I hate them so much. SL Math test Paper 2 wasn't a cake walk, and there was a binomial distribution question that we didn't learn how to do, but apart from that, it was a good and fair test. I still think I scored a low 7 on that paper 2.

So, ready for Physics HL?
