Penny Arcade Rape Controversy

you get shit if you do, and shit if you don't

Not from me. I prefer girls that don't have their labia hanging out for the world to see, I treat them as I treat anyone else (poorly, but at least it's equal). Meanwhile girls in -20C weather and 1 foot of snow wearing open toe high heels and a miniskirt with no jacket...Yeah I think that warrants a fair amount of ogling and disrespect

Ogle away, but saying they were asking for rape isn't good. Girls are under pressure to dress a certain way. To look nice. So it goes.

although I mostly agree with akuchi in feminist convos and stuff, on this one I don't! Because dressing like a whore and dressing pretty are entirely different ideas.

neither makes rape ok, though. But you should know you're getting ogled the fuck out if you're scantily clad.

Phantasia, it depends. Where you are, what's the fad, and that stuff.

But mostly, dressing like a whore is not the same as dressing pretty.

I didn't say they weren't different (to most people anyway, some people like that look. If it's absolutely filthy I'm quite a fan of it myself - see: Aguilera in the dirrty video oh god just take me now). My point is, girls are under pressure to dress a certain way, and I don't think you should judge people that much based on what they wear

Wow, that sounds like people's reactions to me in every situation I've ever been in. It sounds to me like women are finally getting treated just like everyone else. I don't see any controversy here, the original joke wasn't even about rape. Go Penny Arcade for standing up for free speech, even if it could come across as intentionally provocative. Nobody got hurt as a result of this webcomic being posted and these t-shirts being made...no harm no foul IMO.

no, but the responses to the initial criticism were absolutely vile, and did hurt. i'm not really sure 'freedom of speech' really covers 'intentionally triggering a group of rape victims' - to put it another way, taunting a section of society that are liable to have post-traumatic stress disorder

man I'm generally empathic with people with psychological problems and stuff, but if the simple word "rape" breaks the shit out of you... I'm not gonna take you very seriously.

What I can't understand is why Penny Arcade (I'm not a reader of theirs) would even give a shit about this blogger. Why did they even bother responding? Seriously, who gives a fuck about some random blogger's criticism or what she has to say? From their perspective as comic writers, the fans will always be fans, and those who won't be, won't.

It's not just web comics but all media-- there will always be an audience that eats it up, and then people who are . . . well, not part of the audience. For instance, GF will never make pokemon kill each other and send heads flying. Those video gamers who would want that aren't part of the target audience. Those who aren't part of the audience, fuck them. This is what all writing/art/media/etc.etc. is about: getting your target audience.

As for the others, fuck them. :/

Ok, so now Penny and them know, if they make rape jokes a certain sect of feminists will be pissed about the comic. If they care enough to change their comic, fine, if they don't-- well that just redefines the "audience" category to not include that sect. Pretty much end of story there.

im more referring to their tweets after - 'you're so ugly noone would rape you' etc. fucked up.

Forgive me for being skeptical, but I really don't understand how a rape victim voluntarily reading a webcomic and then being offended by it is PA's fault, or how freedom of speech may not apply here. Following PA around after the fact, KNOWING that they don't care about their opinions is also pretty ridiculous. It they're so hurt by the comics, why do they keep reading them? If they're so hurt by the comics, why are they drawing more attention to them, spreading them around for even more people to see? It seems to me that both parties are leeching off each other for publicity here, this reeks of manufactured controversy where there is none. I agree with you on everything else you've said in this thread though.

And boys aren't? Not to mention that this stops mattering entirely outside of high school.

Exactly. If anything, the "dress code" for boys is way stricter than the corresponding expectations for girls.

It's fucked up, yes, but should still be protected. The offended parties did have the option of ignoring the problem in the first place.

It used to be this involved floor-length dresses and shirts that actually covered a woman's cleavage and forearms for the most part, but then the hipster feminists called that oppressive.

Now they charge you MORE money for LESS garment.

I didn't say anything about rape, but a study I read once suggested that many women have rape fantasies. These aren't like a violent fatass beating them up and then forcing himself in them, more like a sexy latin stud comes along while they are tanning their vagina with their eyes closed on a secluded beach and she is all "NOOO" and he is like "yes" and she really enjoys it.

Yep, fucked up but semi-consensual. Kind of a grey area.

Also JRRRRRR is totally a piece of meat :p. He's also right- It is not the fault of the offender for being offensive, it's the fault of the person being offended. It is therefore their job to avoid materials they don't wish to see.

If the mention of the word "rape" triggers you, you really shouldn't be on the internet. It's not PA's fault you read their comic. If they had to worry about making sure they don't insult anybody, their comics would be more boring.

I don't know exactly how it span out - the impression I got was that PA/fans started Tweeting abuse at people, which is out of order. Feminists are entitled to say 'this is not a good thing' and PA etc are similarly entitled to say 'feminism is wrong', but Tweeting people with 'you're too ugly to rape'? Err. No. Bad. Shouldn't do that.

Tell me about it. I've got this tartan skirt that doesn't even cover my ass, it's about 10cm long, and it cost me FORTY FIVE QUID.

Fully agreeing with Mentlegen. If that is so, don't use the internet.

DK, I agree about costing more for less. But that's not what this thread is about.

In fairness this thread quickly warped from the ensuing overreaction to this comic to rape in general.

Personally I thought the discussion of the economic burdens placed on sex workers by increasing the cost of each garment was a relevant side issue I could distract with.

But mostly I hate how jeans with holes in them cost more than jeans fully intact. Especially since the former attract what I will politiely call "the non-working class." You ever go to work with ripped jeans (that you didn't rip yourself, obv.)? I thought not.
