This might be a really dumb question, but can you alternate between Protect and Detect, without it having a chance to fail? I assume not, but I just want to be certain

Sooo, outside of PO it'd still be ok to use it in the lower tiers without Drizzle? It's just that it's one of my fav pokes and I wouldn't want the two Politoeds I bred and trained to go to total waste. xP

Yes theoretically it would, but Politoed may well be OU by usage on smogon too and so you'd be unable to use him in any team in UU no matter the ability. I wouldn't plan a team around it, basically.

Nah. When Protect, Detect, and Endure are used in succession, the chance of any of those moves working is half of the chance before (1/1, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/16, etc).

Edit: This is wrong; read the next post.

No after one successive use the chance for these moves to work is always 50%.

If Magic Mirror Espeon uses a status move, and is blocked by Magic Coat, what happens?
This should probably be asked on Research Thread, where the information would be uploaded in the OP for future reference.
But considering that it reflects things like t-wave to motor drive mons and that they still get the speed boost, meaning that it bounces back the actual move...
My wild guess would be:
1-Foe Pokemon use magic coat.
2-M.M poke use status moves.
3-Magic coat reflect it.
4-MM reflect it back... Everything on the same turn. (Pure Awesomeness)
This considering that Magic coat only work once in the turn. But again, probably better ask on the Research Thread.

Edit:Not what you especifically asked but it's related. It probably work this way too for magic coat.
From research Thread
When 2 pokemon with Magic Mirror face each other it only gets bounced back once. For example, when my Espeon with Magic Mirror used Toxic on a wild Yooteri with Magic Mirror the Espeon got poisoned.

I wanna start getting into 5th gen battling, but I have no idea where to start. Is there an introduction to competitive 5th gen I can read?

Not really, you could read the newest issue of "The Smog" wich can be found here the Pokemon Online Server statistics here can also help to see whats used and good.

Basically its a lot like Gen 4 the only major differences are Team Preview, Dream World abilities, Auto Weather (Drizzle Politoed and Drought Ninetails) and of course the new Gen 5 Pokemon.

How early in the game can you transfer over last-gen pokes? I know the Pokeshifter doesn't open up until post-E4, but can someone with a copy of B/W merely trade them over to you before that? My first run through I'm definitely going to use only new guys and avoid any outside influence until beating the game, but on future attempts, I'd definitely like to be able to start with a Poliwag or whatever!

I believe you can trade in pokemon from any region from another BW cartridge, but as far as importing them directly from DPPtHGSS, you'll need to beat the E4 every time.

The exceptions are the event Celebi, Raikou, Entei, and Suicune, who can be transferred by Castelia City, I believe.

You can get a poliwag as early as in the first town if a friend trades you one from his BW version with the national pokedex. Additionally, you can hack for wild stuff.

@IcyMan
That's totally false. There's a region lock. Japanese BW can only import pokes from a japanaese game IV game. We'll see what happens with american BW, though.

I think he meant 'region' like Kanto/Johto/Hoenn/etc. Still, thanks for the info! Once I figure out the voodoo necessary to get my 1st Gen DS to connect to my Nintendo USB WiFi on my Windows 7 computer, I'll be all set!

Do most of the useless pokemon in the previous generations turn kickass?
No. Things like Porygon2 and Dusclops have gotten a pretty good boost from Evo Stone, but overall, most bad pokes from last gen are still bad now, and many of the better pokes of Gen IV are now outclassed by many of the new ones.
