I have been playing tons of 5th generation on WiFi and PokemonOnline, I've ran both Sun and Sandstorm teams, but I really wanted to create a non-weather based team. It was hard at first and I have run through a lot of different line-ups to come up with this one. I’ve noticed that this generation is extremely fast paced, and I see so many weather based teams (which isn’t a bad thing, it is just the metagame), so I wanted to build a team that puts the other team on its heels. Please note that this is the first RMT I've posted for 5th gen.
Team building process:
I started my team on the foundation of Thundurus, as a Nasty Plot Sweep. The biggest problem I found with Thundurus is there are too many threats that can outspeed it 1HKO or 2HKO it with SR damage, some of which cannot be Thunder Waved making it even harder, so I needed a fast partner that can clean up some of Thundurus’s threats.
With Salamence moved back down to OU, I jumped straight into adding him to the squad. However, none of his typical sets really filled my needs. I decided to go with a Scarf set, and my reasoning to go with Salamence over Flygon is because he has a more versatile move pool and can fill my needs better.
In order to give Thundurus more opportunities to set up, I went with Whimsicott to prevent other team’s set ups and force switch outs, and just act as a physical wall. Also, many common threats to Whimsicott are checked by Salamence.
Latios can act as both a special wall and sweeper with a CM, which helps. Also, with Salamence these two can take out any threats. The biggest threats posed to my team thus far are ice attacks, so I needed some resistance there.
I went for a SR Metagross for the fifth slot, and Lucario for the sixth. Entry hazards are essential for my team, and Metagross can also check/threaten a lot of pokes after setting up SR due to his huge attack stat. With no Dark or Fighting coverage, and lack of priority moves, Lucario seemed like a strong fit for the last slot.
So this was the first full line-up I tested, and I noticed some immediate problems. I don’t have a reliable wall breaker, Metagross never does much damage, and outside of his priority move Lucario is too slow to be helpful. I decided to keep the Metagross for now, but replaced Lucario with Scizor.
Things were slightly better with Scizor, I kept the resistances and coverage I had with Lucario minus an Ice attack. I gained scouting, and kept a priority move, Bullet Punch, which with Technician and Scizor’s high attack is stronger than Lucario’s Vacuum Wave. I liked it more, but it still wasn’t perfect, so I tested Infernape over Scizor.
The squad was working out a little better with Infernape over Scizor. I keep a priority move, keep Ice resistance, and also maintain scouting with U-Turn. Additionally, my team was having trouble with Skarmory, Jirachi, and Blissey, which Infernape handles well. However, Metagross still wasn’t cutting it, so I needed a replacement.
This has been the best line-up I have tested yet. Mamoswine can set up SR, has priority Ice Shard and STAB EQ which packs a punch. I typically use this as my lead, running a Focus Sash and Endeavor set.
This is the best line up I’ve tested so far, I really like the synergy and options I have for almost any situation.
So, now for the sets:
Mamoswine (Adamant)
252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Focus Sash
Snow Cloak
Stealth Rock – Ice Shard – Earthquake – Endeavor
If I out-speed their lead or I know their lead is going to set up SR, I’ll set up my SR. If I know they are going to attack, I’ll endeavor. This lead is always going to give me a SR or close to a KO, if not a KO. The great thing is that neither Hail nor Sandstorm can break the Focus Sash, so I can count on the Endeavor/Ice Shard combo if they are foolish enough to attack first and I predict correctly. Mamoswine also comes in handy for revenge killing if I can keep him alive for later in the game.
Thundurus (Timid)
252 SpA / 20 HP / 236 Spe
Leftovers
Prankster
Thunder Wave – Nasty Plot – Thunderbolt – HP Ice
I considered Focus Blast over Thunder Wave, but TW comes in handy way too often to pass up. It can either allow me to set up or just slow their team down. Salamence does a great job eliminating a lot of threats that can prevent the Nasty Plot set up. Whenever I play smart with Thundurus, it usually takes out multiple pokes or spreads status all around the other team, which helps Latios set up as well.
Latios (Timid)
252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Leftovers
Levitate
HP Fire – Draco Meteor – Calm Mind – Thunderbolt/Surf
I have flopped back and forth between Tbolt and Surf a lot, so any feedback/advice on those would be great. Otherwise, this set is pretty standard. Can act as Special wall or sweeper after a Calm Mind, and can easily come in and be an immediate threat even without a set up. In conjunction with Salamence, these two can handle almost any threat to my core.
Salamence (Adamant)
4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Choice Scarf
Intimidate
Outrage – Earthquake/Stone Edge – Crunch – Aqua Tail
With the speed of Flygon and much more power behind it, I’m surprised I don’t see this set more often, despite lacking U-Turn. I catch a lot of people off guard with the Aqua Tail, and the reason I use Crunch because of problems caused by Jellicent and Reuniclus, and just for the coverage in general. With SR up this thing can really cause massive damage to a team if it catches them off guard or they don’t have an appropriate check. I’m stuck between EQ and Stone Edge, so feedback would be appreciated on that as well.
Infernape (Jolly)
4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Choice Band
Iron Fist
Mach Punch – Flare Blitz – Close Combat – U-Turn
This is a fantastic wall breaker that my team needs as it can tear apart any wall that is weak to Fighting or Fire. U-Turn is here for obvious reasons, my team needs the scouting and it hits Latios/Latias, Reuniclus, etc. Another thing that poses a threat to my team is either a boosted or scarfed Tyranitar, and between STAB and Iron fist boosts on Mach Punch should 1HKO it. It isn’t the most common move in Infernape sets, so if my opponent takes the risk of staying in it is a kill.
Whimsicott (Impish)
252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Leftovers
Prankster
Encore – Substitute – Leech Seed – Toxic
The team wouldn’t be the same without this guy. The key is keeping him alive as long as possible because he completely shuts down any set up pokemon the other team has, which otherwise I have little means of stopping. SubSeed is obvious, and I decided to go with Toxic for the sake of crippling non-Steel walls, and/or speeding up the Leech Seed and stall process. The best thing about Whim is how easily is can force a threat to switch out, in which case I can bring in either Latios or Thundurus and set up depending on their switch in.

All in all, I like this line-up. It’s not like I win all the time by any means, but I haven’t run into any huge problems (biggest problem is Excadrill in a Sandstorm, because I can’t control weather, and can only out-speed it with Mach Punch, Ice Shard, Encore, Substitute, and Leech Seed). I just started competitive battling late in the 4th generation and I’m not very experienced, so any potential changes in the sets or replacement pokemon will be taken into account with much appreciation.
