U.S Postal Service to go Out of Business by Early Next Year...

Idea: Plan things you dont want certain people to go to around the time it shuts down so that you dont have to go through the awkwardness of telling them they cant come

Birthday Invitation? postal service was cancelled

Wedding? same thing

works for taxes, alimony, etc

I can't plan my birthday 9.9

Oh how little you know

Well shit. I can see myself importing a lot less from the US if this happens. DHL, UPS, etc. are just too pricey and their service fees are ridiculous. I'd rather not pay $20 for your company to make sure I get charged customs thanks. I'd rather pay nothing and not get charged customs 90% of the time.

so what happens to the regular mail then? Will we be forced to use UPS and Fed Ex for everything, even something as simple as a letter? I thought the USPS was a government agency that couldn't be shut down...

Well, when the postmaster makes $800k a year and everyone else gets tons of benefits making costs impossible to recoup due to contracts... And while we're at it, politicians and richer folk need to be taxed harder to fix the insane wealth discrepancy.

As for USPS, if they weren't an government-owned entity, they could probably file for bankruptcy and they'd be reformed to suit their current needs. It'd be a lot better than what's about to happen.

This is a bit of an odd one to me considering Canada Post just up north still manages to report profits with highly paid employees, through a declining general use of postal services and by having to sustain services nationwide to places where it just cannot be profitable. It doesn't cost me any extra to send a letter to Whitehorse, Yukon than it would if I wanted to send one to my neighbour.

This said, without knowing too much about it, I don't think it should be too worrisome unless you live away from the big centers. There will still be affordable mail services in the US through the private sector, not necessarily from mentioned companies like UPS or Fed Ex which offer faster delivery for a higher fee.

The post office never made any money until the Regan administration, I don't see why it won't continue in the future being a hole the goverment has to fill with with money. Will it be downsized? Yes, but its going to stay up.

I hope you mean $80k, and accidentally put an extra 0 on that. No single government job in the US rakes in 800k, hell, Obama doesn't even get that much money to himself. Most postmasters in the system rake in the $80k zone, while Donahoe himself gets about $245k

For everyone else, their salaries aren't really that high, and bonuses aren't actually that large. Stop overstating things like this. Actually LOOK at the numbers.

I'm not sure if the USPS is in this but the government has a pay scale system in place (especially for military contracting). It has a grade and step system where the lowest is grade 1 (step 1) which is $17,800 and the highest is Grade 15 (step 10) at $129,517. Pay rates for SES, SL and ST range from $119,500 to $179,800. They also have pay adjustments depending on where you live (min 4%/max 35%).

So let's say the Postmaster has the highest possible base pay of $179,800 (Round to $180,000 for math purposes) and he lives in the highest pay adjustment area (has 35% adjustment). He there by earns a little more than $240,000 a year (which is about what Obama makes a year, iirc).

I don't really see a big deal. I mean, who the fuck is so archaic as to write letters anyway? Most websites like Amazon and stuff use UPS or FedEX anyway. It just opens the gate to competition and pricing will adjust accordingly. I have a feeling that during the holiday season we will see deals for sending stuff through the mail and letters (for the 10% who still write them) will probably not be as expensive as most people are exaggerating.

The USPS just leeches money anyway and it's far less useful today than it used to be. Billing and all that can be done online. We have e-mail and the like to have conversations back and forth. Anything you want to order via magazines can be done online and save trees (if you care about that). It's not that big of a deal. I think it's a good thing to be honest.

Pretty much the only thing the USPS does now is ship packages from people to people and handle the bills that aren't paid online. Hell even the government, when they need to send packages, use FedEx instead of the USPS.

I figured because they were government that they fell under the federal payscale system. Yeah I was gonna say "don't quote me on that" in my post for president Obama's pay, but i decided not to.

also postmen tend to be psychotic so if they lose their jobs here it'll be like unlocking the gates of arkham asylum

Doesn't amazon use usps because it's so much cheaper than ups and fedex? I really have no idea my dad just said earlier today "the only reason amazon books works is because of the 2-3 dollar shipping rates of usps." Not his exact wording but you get the point.
I'd be pretty bummed if this happened though. I've boughten skateboards from the us on a couple of occasions and the folk are always saying that it's like $20 cheaper to use usps.
Not to mention customs, but I think firestorm already did iirc from read this thread this morning. Yep he did. Well support your country, pay customs!

amazon cant bitch about this and then in the next sentence whine about how difficult it is to evade taxes

This is the issue:

Respectfully, the reason DHL, UPS, are doing fine, and the Postal System is not is because they are too pricey and have service fees. It's not the whole problem by any means, but if the Postal System would jack their rates up to match, they wouldn't be in this predicament right now, at this time.
