*1st Timer* Regionals Team

Hey everyone, this is my first year participating in the VGC. I'm usually a TCG guy, but since we can play in both I might as well!! :) So, as you could probably guess, I'm fairly overwhelmed by the pool of options I have for building a doubles team (what, like 600+ pokemon?...sheesh...). Anyways, this is the team I have come up with....I think it needs some more speed, and I would like to see some fast fire type on this team as well. I'll list my other options at the end of the thread. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Garchomp
Garchomp_male_sprite_dp.png

Jolly / Sand Veil / Expert Belt
(31 attack and 31 speed IVs) (I'll only list IVs where they pertain)
252 atk / 252 spe / 4 hp
Earthquake
Rock Slide
Dragon Claw
Protect

Garchomp is my powerhouse that I use to clean up after I've KO'd whatever potential Ice Beam user my opponent has. With the IV, EV, and Nature, Chompy usually outspeeds every dragon except scarfed ones, of course, and Latios/ias.

Aerodactyl
aerodactyl_sprite.png

Jolly / Pressure / Choice Scarf
252 Atk / 252 Spe / 4 Hp
Ice Fang
Rock Slide
Crunch
Taunt

I know, I know, I have Taunt on a Choice set...It's really my only TR counter right now, so I figured I might as well get the Taunt out there ASAP. Anywho, I love th idea of a speedy Rock Slide, and that's essentially what ScarfDactyl is for. Ice Fang hits dragons hard (especially ones that outspeed Garchomp). Crunch is for Psychic /Ghost pokemon, and is a Latios/ias counter. Is Aerodactyl even worth it tho? hmm...

Lickilicky
463_lickilicky_1_m.png

Impish (I think surviving a physical fighting move it top priority...I guess....) / Cloud Nin9 / Chople Berry
252 HP / 160 Def / 96 SPD (I can retrain these....)
Protect
Substitute (hopefully eliminate fighting threats and spam Protect/Sub vs a weather team)
Flamethrower
Explosion

Basically....Lickilicky is here to prevent weather effects and to explode. . . sometimes. . .

Conkelldurr
534-frame1.png

Brave / Guts / Flame Orb
252 Atk / 252 Hp / 4 Spe (31 Iv's across the board....is that sort of thing assumed around here? .... hmmm...)
Mach Punch ... for priority on T-Tar, Excadrill, and Ice threats
Drain Punch to tank
Protect
Rock Slide

Well...let's see...analysis....um...it's a typical Conk. :) And it counters sand teams (I hope...).

Here's where things get iffy....if they haven't already...

Eelektross
604-frame1.png

Modest / Levitate / Flying Gem
252 SpA / 252 Hp / 4 Spe
Flamethrower
Thunderbolt (could change out with Discharge since I run Chomp...but I don't like the loss in power, or I could add Thunder for rain teams)
Acrobatics
Protect

Eelektross is specifically my Conkeldurr counter. And even tho I haven't trained any Atk EVs, with the Flying Gem he still has gotten the OHKO on all the Conkeldurrs I have faced in Wi-fi. Flamethrower is surprisingly effective against Bronzong and Metagross, and whatever electric attack you guys think I should use is for water types/flying/etc.

Milotic
milotic_thumb.png

Modest / Marvel Scale / Leftovers
252 Hp / 252 SpA / 4 Spe
Protect
Ice Beam
Hydro Pump
Surf

Milotic is my other counter to Dragon/Flying types (Ice Beam is wonderful...as you all know...), the water moves are for ground guys or sunny day/fire teams.

That's it! As you can see my team lacks speed (aside from Garchomp and Aerodactyl)....

I have some other options I could use tho, like....

MowTom (Rotom-C)
Spr_4p_479L.png

Naive / Levitate / Sitrus Berry
252 SpA / 252 Spe /4 HP
Leaf Storm
Discharge
Protect
Thunder Wave

Rotom adds an element of speedy Lightning/Grass to my team that can hit some water types pretty hard...As I've stated earlier, my team is lacking in speed, and doesn't even have a grass move on it, so Rotom-C adds a LOT.

Latios
381.png

Timid / Levitate / Dragon Gem or Expert Belt if I run it in place of Garchomp
252 SpA / 252 Spe / 4 Hp
Psychic
Thunderbolt or Ice Beam
Draco Meteor
Protect

If I run this guy in place of Garchomp I will have NO ONE with Earthquake on my team...keep that in mind....I could teach it to my scarfed Aerodactyl I guess....I like Latios simply because of his speed and ability to pretty much OHKO any Dragon type. If I added him I would drop Garchomp (like I said), and either Milotic or Eelektross for Rotom-C or Chandellure (more on it laterz...). Depending on whom I dropped, I would either run Thunderbolt or Ice Beam.

Chandellure
609_chandelure_front_norm.png

Timid / Probably Choice Scarf or Quick Claw if I run him...maybe Ghost Gem - see, this is another one of those many areas in which I need advice / Flame Body
252 SpA / 252 Spe / 4 HP (31 Iv's across the board)
Imprison
Trick Room
Shadow Ball
Overheat

Chandellure would be an AWESOME speed addition to my team (I would probably cut Aerodactyl from my team for it). Chandellure could KO pesky Steel, Ice, Grass, Psychic, and Ghost types and do it with Speed! Imprison/TR is obviously a Trick Room counter.

Finally....

Whimsicott
whimsicott.png

Timid / Prankster / Focus Sash? ... not sure with this one...
252 HP / 252 SpD / 4 Spe
Tailwind
Trick Room
Helping hand
Encore

Whimsicott would be my super support pokemon (probably would drop Aerodactyl for this) for this offensive team. Tailwind wind would provide some much needed speed for an otherwise slow team, TR could reverse opponent's TR, Helping hand gives even moooore boosts, and Encore lets me take advantage of non offensive moves.

Well my friends, as I've said, I'm new at this, I've dumped HOURS of my time into this game (at least 70 in the last few weeks)...and I'm kind of getting my mental wires crossed up at this point...any suggestions would be incredible :). Thanks!

Attacking milotic might not to much. Maybe replace it with Chandelure. This can also help if lickylicky is facing a fighting type (switch to chandelure). Add focus sash to chandy because choice imprison wont get where and is just BS. If you keep Eelektross, make it either sp attacking or attacking. If you make it sp attacking and have big issues with conkeldurr, add latios/latias w/ psychic. I would prefer latios. One of lickylickiy main jobs is to eliminate weather pokemon. Probably u should add thunder/power whip for politoed and another move for taking out ninetales. Keep flamethrower for abomosnow.

Good luck!!

Garchomp -Pretty good sweeper and can rack up some damage on opposing teams.

Aerodactyl - You use it as a TR counter.... But when the TR setter has a mental herb, your Aero has basically wasted a turn taunting and also, you've locked yourself into a non-attacking move. As an alternative, you can use an imprison chandelure with a focus sash.

name: Special Attacker
move 1: Heat Wave
move 2: Shadow Ball
move 3: Trick Room
move 4: Imprison
item: Focus Sash / Fire Gem / Life Orb
nature: Modest / Quiet / Timid
ability: Flash Fire
evs: 252 HP / 252 SpA / 4 SpD

You could replace protect over imprison if shielding your chandelure from extra damage seems like a good idea to you.

Lickilicky - Seems okay... Although, without recovery, Lickilicky will often find itself wearing himself down for the opponent. Also, Lickilicky doesn't compare to pokemon such as lati@s and thundurus in speed. So, he would be to slow to pull off the substitute. I would suggest another coverage move over substitute.

Conkeldurr- Standard Conkeldurr. This is good.

Eelektross- If you've ever seen the ZapChomp Combo in action, it's pretty awesome. It's a great combo to use if you can use it over thunderbolt. As a tip, I wouldn't suggest using thunder on eelektross seeing how constantly weather is changed in VGC (Also with the existence of anti-weather a.k.a Abomasnow)

Milotic - I can see this job being accomplished by Suicune. Suicune can provide Tailwind support, become a major threat by CM, or just RestTalk its way through a match. I highly suggest a Suicune in this spot.

Thank you guys SOO MUCH for your help and suggestions.

FalseOracle - I would try that, but I only have Latios :(

Nacho - Thanks for the advice!

Dingram - I would love to run Chandelure, but if I recall correctly, it only learns Imprison through breeding? I didn't know that when I posted this (my bad :( ) and I thought I could just TM it to my Chandelure. Anyways, the Chandelure I have now is 31 IVs and I'm not all that sure how to breed perfect pokemon....now I could just breed it with Imprison and not worry too much about the IVs....would that be ok??

I may switch my Lickilicky for Golduck (with Cloud Nine) and run it with Focus Sash, protect, ice beam, (insert water move here), and psychic... This would allow me to drop Milotic and Lickilicky, making room for another pokemon, like Chandelure.

I have seen the ZapChomp Combo...the only problem for me is that I traded away all my pokemon from HGSS and I can't teach my Zapdos Heat Wave...do you think I could pull off an effective combo without Heat Wave?

My Suicune has a relaxed nature... :/ .... I caught it before I knew about competitive play...also, it's IVs are extremely underwhelming. I may see if I can find another one, and if I can, I'll try it out. What does "become a major threat by CM" mean? And for the RestTalk combo, would I want to train my Suicune with high HP and SpA or Speed and just rest/sleep talk the whole time? I think that's just a question out of newness ;)

Thank you SOOO much for your help

Thank you SOOO much for your help

What he means by CM is calm mind. Raises special defense/atk. Makes it almost invul to special attacks with enough raises, and powers through alot of threats in the end.

I personally like lickilicky better than golduck as a C9er. Hes more flexible and in general a better poke IMO. He just lacks recovery, Altaria gets C9 too but outside of it's defensive stats is lacking and is hit 2x by rock slide which most sand teams will have on excadrill and ttar/hippo. So it's a bit of a risk.

Hey guy HMU later I can get you an imprison chandellure to use.

Ok, that makes sense, thank you.

I would love an imprison Chandelure...how should I get a hold of you and are you looking for anything in return?

NP :D I dont think you have to worry to much about getting your pokemon. There a lot of people here who give free pokemon if you are going to VGC. I am pretty sure muffinhead's trade thread has a heat wave zapdos.

Nachocheese,

Hey sorry for intruding, but do you know from whom I could get an adamant Terrakion? I caught mine before competitive play and he's got a lonely nature:( lol.

Even if you can't, thanks for taking the time to read this.

So let me get this straight. You run Scarfed Aerodactyle with taunt to outspeed trick room users, even though Trick Room has -6 priority? Just wondering.

No, I run it with Scarf because its speed IVs aren't perfect, and I want it to outspeed either A. Scarfed Dragon types, with Aerodactyl's Ice Fang, or B. Out speed any non-priority move with rock slide or one of his other attacks. Taunt is judt for TR teams, and the scarf has nothing to do with it...it does suck tho to have scarf on it with taunt....I'm probably going to drop Aerodactyl in favor of Chandelure. Thanks for your input tho, that is a good point!
