Super Smash Bros 64, Melee, and Brawl thread

Everybody disagrees with me, but Ness is absolutely awesome. His PK attacks do incredible damage, he has a counter move that CAN RESTORE HEALTH!!!!! And he's pretty fast, all coupled with very good smash attacks.

........Nobody seems to appreciate this, everyone tells me he sucks.

Ness is good, but not for the reasons you said. Ness' strengths have always been 1-his godly throws, and 2-his aerial game complemented double jump cancels. Pk flash should almost never be used, fire has limited range and is way laggy, and thunder is the most gimpable recovery in all of smash brothers. Ness also has to deal with the fact that his smashes are mediocre and he gets chaingrabbed by everyone in brawl. The best way to use ness is to play in the air and rack up damage until you can use pk fire to set up a back throw. (that paragraph only applies to melee and brawl. Smash 64 ness is awesome and only stopped by pikachu.)

.....erm....whatever we both like him for different reasons.

I also think link is under-appreciated, please don't give me a whole analysis on him, I am just saying he has a great range of weapons, from bombs to magic boomerangs to swords. He's pretty speedy, and is just.....well.....you know,.........EPIC BECAUSE HE IS LINK

...and Saffron City. Good thing it's a Counter Pick stage in most SSB64 tournaments (as if those exist) if one of the players is Ness. At least, I was told this a while back; all I know for sure is that Ness loathes this awesome stage!

G&W has a nice rump.

Link has always been a sub-par character. Sure he has some great mind games with Bombs and the Boomarang; outside of that he doesn't have much. Slow speed, bad smashes. Decent recovery thanks to the hookshoot and bomb recovery, but he's easily gimped (and bomb recovery isn't a very effective method). The reason you use link is so you can spam bombs and the boomarang until you can effectively KO with the Up-B (which is pretty much his only semispike outside of d-smash I think). Let's not mention that (remember I'm a melee whore), his fast falling speed + his weight makes him pretty easy for sheik to chaingrab.

Just gonna keep putting out my favorites-

Gen. Empoleon, moonbound, whoever wants to answer:
Can I have a summary on these guys too
Mario/luigi (compare them)
KING DEDEDE
marth

Thanks

First game was brawl....... Meanwhile my friend had melee.

Personally I use the pokemon trainer (Gosh, what a surprise!). Ivysaur's bullet seed wracks up tons of damage and then charizard can use rock smash or fly to KO them. It's my best bet for winning. Aside from him, I sometimes use Ike or Marth.

smashboards is a pretty good answer to all of these questions, but I guess......

Mario vs Luigi is odd. The differences being their smashes and their side-bs. I really think that Luigi is better than Mario, but Doc. Mario trumps all due to his reverse sex kick and his better smashes. Mario's advantages over Luigi are his cape and his fireballs. His cape can gimp most recoveries while his fireballs don't go straight, so you can stop someone from recovering below stage. Which is how most Marth's will try to recover (and sweetspot up-B to the ledge). Luigi has better recovery and a much farther wavedash. His side-b can cover an insane amount of area and his wavedash gives him an ability to attack from extremely far away without relying on pivot smashes or an aerial game. Like I said though, better off using Doc.

While I am a Melee buff I do know Brawl pretty well and D3 is my "main". He has insane chaingrabs that you have to be retarded to not pull off. On top of that his side-b has terrific spam ability (and possible KO potential). Amazing tilts. He may have the best tilts in all of Brawl. His U-tilt has insane kockback, his f-tilt has the ability to gimp recoveries pretty well. U-tilt can poke under shields easily too! Let's not forget he has multiple jumps and an Up-B that has insane vertical recovery and super armor frames.

Marth in Melee is annoying. There's a reason why most of the #1's have used Marth (and then they switch to Fox or something, I don't know why). The only downside to Marth, and I mean the only downside, is that he doesn't have a projectile. His range on his sword is unholy. The sweetspot (where it does the most damage) is at the tip so you have the safety of not getting hit as long as you're within swords-reach away. Since Marth attacks with his sword it's known as a disjointed hitbox. Meaning that characters that attack with their body are at a much greater risk since their hurtbox is their hitbox, usually. Marth has chaingrabs, amazing aerial game, strong smashes, amazing tilts, great recovery (with side-b and up-b), and a spike.

Fuck Marth.

Thanks, gonna check out Smashboards to learn how to own my friends, we play all the time.

Also, Im not completely sure what youre talking about. Not sure what recovery is, tilts, wavedash, etc.

I will look this up like the nerd I am.
EDIT: I just looked at smashboards, and they dont have character specifics for brawl.....

There is an individual board for each character with match-ups, strategies, etc. It should not be very difficult to find relevant info for each...

Oops fail.
I can't seem to find any non-forum advice. (like an analysis that we have here, you don't need to be in the forums)

If you're serious about learning to play smash better, I'd recommend getting a forum account, even if you only lurk. Smashboards is uncontested as the center of competitive smash.

The two hardest things to learn in melee are the l-cancel and u-tilt. I dare anyone to argue the latter

Bowser main for life.

Although I started with Melee, I only got into competitive Smash with Brawl, so I never learned most of those Melee combo-type techniques. But what makes u-tilting hard in Melee?

not in melee. and u-tilt is hard because it requires a VERY LIGHT use of up on the controller, meaning that during high level play you need to make sure you're not just going as hard or fast as you can for the u-tilt.

I guess I'll take you up on that dare then, it's not hard at all if you make sure to only move the control stick up about halfway when you tilt, not as far as it will go. Other techniques require this movement as well (like standing up-b or shine on a platform without dropping through), so it's worthwhile to perfect it.

L-Cancel and up tilt are hard? what.
Those things are pretty simple imo.
Things like shield dropping, pivot forward smashing, or up smash out of shield were a lot more difficult to learn.
