OU CCAT: Nidoking Edition

1. B-b-b-balance
2. Sssssmash Pass

Weather is such a common theme for OU teams and hyper offense usually is a bit on the frail side if I remember correctly (Slightly out of the metagame since my labtop was out for a month or so). And other playstyles just don't seem to fit.

I think Balanced is the only right answer here, the other options either he has no business being in (Hyper Offense/Stall) or he isn't going to be the main focus point (SmashPass/Weather) and isn't that the whole point of this topic so we can revolve around Nidoking?

Unless I'm a derp.

Bulky offence
Hyper offense (just because I don't want smash pass to get any points, it moves the team away from nidoking too much, and I have found smash pass teams hard to make without just picking the deadliest sweepers you can find, and a bit brainless)
Edit: wait, can we just make one nomination? In That case just bulky offense/Bala ce.

oops my bad

POLL IS CLOSED

And the results are:

  • Stall - 2 pts
  • Weather - 2 pts
  • SmashPass - 5 pts
  • Hyper Offense - 8 pts
  • Balance / Bulky Offense - 38 pts

And the poll says, BE IT SO.

We are playing with a manly variation of a MANLY style. Now onto Phase 3:

Step 3: We select Pokemon that work well around our Pokemon and fit the team style and test it.

This will consist of different polls, each determining one teammate, who should be able to support the already chosen Pokemon. Make sure any Pokemon chosen fit the theme of Balance / Bulky Offense.

I will be accepting nominations for the first Pokemon up until this Friday, November 25.

Happy posting!

Poll's closed. Aw, too bad. I would've recommended Earthquake on Mild Nidoking if Smash Pass were chosen.

As for teammates, we can just use the standard Choice Band / Scarf Terrakion to smash through specially defensive threats (plus Terrakion adds to the 'manliness'), as well as pretty much any team with Gliscor/Scizor eliminated generally. Speaking of which, to provide paralysis support, please use either the standard Paralysis Abuse set or plain (and predictable) Specially Defensive.

My earlier post contains my nominations, rotom-w beinng my primary one:
Again I am also vouching for bulky offence, with paralysis support and maybe tailwind support for a late game clean up.
Whimsicott is able to do both of these, with priority as well, so I suggest we use him. The set is:
547_whimsicott_front_norm.png

Whimsicott @ Leftovers
Trait: Prankster
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SDef
Careful Nature (+SDef, -SAtk)
- Stun Spore
- Tailwind
- U-turn
- Leech Seed

Stun Spore and Tailwind make up for the only lacklustre thing about nidoking: his speed, allowing him to deal significant damage to the opponent without having to worry about being outsped. We could also run taunt or encore over leech seed, allowing him to stop set up sweepers in their tracks or to help to cancel out chansey who is a problem for Nidoking.

Rotom-W also works very well on the defensive side, covering his water, ground, and ice weaknesses, and also can spread paralysis very well with a bulky set, what I have in mind is this:
Spr_4p_479W.png

Rotom-W @ Leftovers
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 Spd
Impish Nature (+Def, -Atk)
- Pain Split
- Hydro Pump
- Thunder Wave
- Volt Switch
Physically defensive Rotom-W is a very efficient paralysis spreader in my experience, and also covers 3 of nidokings 4 weaknesses, while being neutral to the 4th. He has only 1 weakness which is resisted by whimsicott, and of course possibly by further team members. If anyone wants to see it I have a log of this Rotom working very well, paralysing all the important threats and staying alive all game (with a little help from hax): http://pokemon.aesoft.org/replay-shnen2-vs-Davinci--2011-11-12

I also second the idea of para shuffler nite, and we should also have spikes support from someone, I would nominate skarmory as he has access to reliable recovery instead of Ferrothorn, although Ferro can also paralyse with t-wave...

If I were to use Nidoking, I would probably use to force switches on a bulky offence team with spikes and stuff.
I would recommend defensive skarmory for the spikes support. Then, I would also run specs rotom-W because it messes with stall so much. It can volt switch in and out of pokemon, giving nidoking places to switch in, and tricks other walls, crippling blissey, chansey, gastrodon, and other special walls. It forces many switches, so spikes damage will accumulate on the opponent's side. With max hp, it can have many opportunities to switch in. Both have decent type synergy with nidoking.

The sets.
Skarmory (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Sturdy
EVs: 252 HP / 240 Def / 16 Spd
Impish Nature (+Def, -SAtk)
- Brave Bird
- Whirlwind
- Spikes
- Roost

Rotom-W @ Choice Specs
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 248 HP / 252 SAtk / 8 Spd
Modest Nature (+SAtk, -Atk)
- Trick
- Pain Split
- Volt Switch
- Hydro Pump

I am honored to have given the winning nomination for a team built by the community, so thanks guys! On another note, I am all for Bulky Offense for the team type. One teammate that really comes to mind is Haxkiss. Here's the set

Togekiss@ Lefties
Calm and Serene Grace
252 HP/4 Def/ 252 SDef
-Body Slam/Thunder Wave
-Air Slash
-Aura Sphere/Flamethrower/Nasty Plot
-Roost

Paralysis Support, covering of one weakness of Nidoking, even though they share an Ice weakness, and a chance to sweep slower opponents, I've used this set to great effect in OU. Yes, I know Togekiss is UU, but when it comes to paralysis support and bulkyness without too many weaknesses, such as Celebi, which has 7, Togekiss has only 3, in Rock, Electric, and Ice. Togekiss does come with an SR weakness, but that's where this next member comes in:

Starmie@ Lefties/LO
Timid and Natural Cure
4 HP/252 SAtk/252 Spd
-Rapid Spin
-Hydro Pump/Surf
-Thunderbolt/Ice Beam
-Recover(/T-bolt/Ice Beam)

Rapid Spin Support, weaknesses of both Nidoking and Togekiss covered to an extent, and MORE Gen 1 love! Starmie would be a great fit as a spinner and as an offensive power, coupled with the fact that it synergiezes amazingly with Nidoking, resisting every weakness it has, while the King takes care of Electric and Bug type moves Starmie would get. Starmie even synergizes well with Togekiss, resisting Ice and Rock moves, while Togekiss resists Bug, Ghost, and Grass.

Keep in mind that each potential member listed here shares one and only one weakness with either Starmie, Nidoking, or Togekiss, but that can be easily taken care of with a different member, not to mention the fact that each member that does not share a weakness with the other two either resists it or is immune to it.

100% support shnen's Rotom-W set.

212.png

Scizor @ Choice Band
Trait: Technician
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Atk / 8 Spe
Adamant nature
- U-turn
- Bullet Punch
- Superpower
- Pursuit

Nidoking will obviously have a very tough time muscling past things like Blissey, Reuncius or Latias when they're at full health so a strong physical attacker would be nice. Scizor handles all of the aformentioned threats to Nido. Scizor can also picks off pokemon that are faster than Nidoking with Bullet Punch. This works out pretty good resistance wise as well (3/4).

I'll edit more sets in later

To help with Nidoking middling speed, I recommend a very ordinary set, one of the best users of Thunder Wave in the tier: Standard Ferrothorn

[pimg]598[/pimg]

Ferrothorn@Leftovers
Trait: Iron Barbs
EV's: 252 HP / 88 Def / 168 SpD
Nature: Relaxed
- Spikes
- Leech Seed
- Thunder Wave
- Power Whip

Ferrothorn helps deal with the types that Nidoking is weak to: Ground, Ice, Psychic, and Water. Spikes will offer an entry hazard that works great in conjunction with Nidoking's switch-forcing coverage as well as score critical KO's. Thunder Wave help's mitigate Nidoking's speed issure, giving it the ability to sweep. Thunder Wave will help supporting the team deal with offensivly-decling threats easier as well. Finnally, Power Whip nails those Water types who would otherwise threaten Nidoking.

It should also be noted that Ferrothorn is very easy to put into a team, so if we put in Ferrothorn then we are more flexible in what other Pokemon will be put into Nidoking's team and ease in the building process.

I suggest the absolute most obvious thing: Para Support.

The only fool-proof way to do so? Parashuffle DNite

Dragonite @ leftovers
Ability: Multiscale
252 HP/4 ATT/252 Sp Def or Def depending on team
-twave
-sub
-roost
-dtail

it's simple... paralyze, sub, roost, dtail, repeat until other team is paralyzed.

used succesfully as a lead and provides just the support+residual damage nidoking needs.

can paralyze all threats 99% of the time when played correctly

Something I'd like to suggest as a team mate is SubPunch Conk.

Conkeldurr (F) @ Leftovers
Trait: Guts
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Spe
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Substitute
- Focus Punch
- Mach Punch
- Payback / Stone Edge

Nidoking's biggest problem, in my opinion, is Blissey. She's gunna wall him from Turn 1 to Turn 100. This Conk set loves seeing that pink blob. It's objective is fairly simple come in on the special tank, Sub and Fire away! I personally use Flame Orb for the immediate power boost but Leftovers is the much safer option because Conk may be taking some status coming in anyway.

Why Substitute + Flame Orb? Losing 37% on your first turn doesnt sound fun at all... Leftovers seems like a much better choice.
