Back on the 11th of May in the year of our Lord 2007, a Friday, I took a trip up to our wonderful neighbor of the north... Canada. More specifically, Toronto. I was to see my friend Tim's band +nurse play its final show, final due to the fact that he was leaving the band to spend more time with his new son. I had seen the band play twice before and was excited to see their farewell performance.
After a leisurely 3 hour ride, I arrive at my destination in the awesome downtown Toronto area. (The name of the venue eludes me at the moment.) I parked my car in a nearby lot and walked over and greeted Tim, who is basically my first internet friend (I met him on the Hum Mailing List about 8 years ago). After exchanging the usual pleasantries, we went inside and I headed to the bar (me drink? no!).
Tim was basically the man of the hour, so he spent most of the time running around greeting all the people who were showing up. Every time he'd run by me he'd apologize for not being able to stop and talk to me at all, but it was no big deal, I was hanging out with the other band members, who were wicked cool. They even recommended that I try the Blanche de Chambly white ale, which was fucking FANTASTIC.
The first two bands were pretty good, but everyone was there to see +nurse. They took the stage to a great reception and went through all their best songs. Here's a picture of the band rocking out (from left to right is Simon, Tim, Dave):
I also took video of two songs, they're great:
On Demand
Reverse Engineering
Their set was over, and at that point I was pretty blitzed. I decided it'd be a great idea to go outside and start calling people. Like usual, I interrupted chaos getting funky with his lady, but I spoke briefly with cloud and then spent about 20 minutes telling Dweedle how much everyone missed him and caught up on what was happening with his life.
Then the fourth and final band got up there. Their music was pretty average at best, but the lead singer asked Simon and Tim to get up and help sing the one song and it fucking ruled:
After the show, Tim drove us back to his place in my car since I was kinda hammered. (Just an aside... Toronto is fucking BEAUTIFUL at night.) We stopped by a Wendy's and got about 4 burgers and fries, and the fucking cunts fucked us over because we were too dumb to check the bag before driving away. Anyways, I stayed at Tim's place that night and got to hang out with his 11-month-old son Max the next morning, the kid was awesome. Before leaving, I got the first ever picture of Tim and I:
He wanted me to go to some outdoor soccer game with him, but I couldn't... because I had other plans. What plans, do you ask? (You might also be asking why the fuck you're reading this story.) Well, before I made the trek to Canada I had been in touch with another friend of mine who lived in the area and I wanted toOH MY GOD IT'S CLOUD
Yes, my fellow Smogoners, I met our resident Bengali, Dougun Mia, aka cloud9x aka stamps aka grape aka poygon aka... well you get the point. golemKong, aka gk, aka MEGATRON, aka... anyways, he was supposed to meet up with us too, but, well... jerk.
I talked to cloud that morning at Tim's, and we decided to meet up and head out to lunch, so I got directions to a McDonald's that was about halfway from Tim's to cloud's and drove there.
As I got out of the car, I instinctively started rolling the camera. What happened at that exact monent, dear Smogoners... will forever go down in the annals of Smogon meetups for being the most perfectly timed shit, EVER.
After we got past the hellos and whatnot, he gave gk a call and found out that the sumbitch was out GOLFING. Instead of meeting me, he went fucking GOLFING. (Oh well, I owe him a few spanks on the ass at Smocon.) Then we hopped in my car and headed to a place cloud knew that had great food. It was on the edge of the heavy Asian area, and it was this KICKASS Korean barbeque place where they bring out all the chicken/beef/steak/salmon/etc. to you raw in bowls, and in the middle of your table is this open grill, and you get to cook it yourself. Fucking delicious.
I had promised chaos I'd call him once I had met up with cloud and gk (prick), so we did that. (It would've been even better if I had kept recording and gotten the AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.) Before we started eating, I demanded to get some sort of picture of cloud, so I requested his famous "fill in the space next to me" pose:
After this was accomplished, we dug in to the food. Apparently cloud has an enormous appetite, as he said he and his friends enjoy going to that place and just staying for hours, since you only pay once and it's basically all you can eat. (God, I love places like that.) Conversation, as you can imagine, centered mostly around Smogon and music, with a good amount of family talk thrown in for good measure. I really can't wait to lay on cloud's Dihan, I hear it's comfy. (:
At this point, I would like to completely randomly say that there was this Asian girl sitting at the table next to us was wearing some kinda weird suit outfit... and she was fucking GORGEOUS. I'm going back up there some weekend this summer because cloud says he knows many morally loose Asian girls I can... get to know.
After I ate as much as I possibly could, we curtailed our eating activities and paid and left and started walking around the plaza. Nearby was this really small and really strange comic/video store which focused on (surprise surprise!) manga. We looked at some graphic novels which were, to say the least... pretty disturbing.
After that fiasco, I realized I had a long ride back and I needed to get going to be home in time to go out with my girl, so I drove him a few blocks over closer to his house. He insisted I not drive him all the way home, so I dropped him off in a parking lot next to the mainway that would take me back to the highway. I put the camera on top of my car and snapped a timed pic of the two of us, but the wind TOTALLY motherfucked the picture and he demanded I never show it to anybody*, so we took another one:
Wind makes us grumpy. So, after another DM-forced-kinda-weird hug goodbye, I hopped in my car and headed back to the homeland, USA. It was a great time, and I'm proud to say I've met cloud because he's a fucking sweet dude. I can't wait to get back up there again, plus I know Asian girls like white guys with money, and now that I have the new car I'll be fucking irresistible.
The End.
