2012/2013 Soccer/Football thread

Only caught the first half of the game but it was pretty good. I'm really enjoying watching Liverpool's games as a neutral this season. They absolutely need a forward lol or at least a goal scoring attacking midfielder (Gerrard hasn't shown his best form for a season or so now). Someone in the mould of Dempsey, Sigurdsson or even Michu would slot right in alongside or behind Suarez.

Newcastle have been playing really badly this season but I think the sheer quality of their strikeforce is coming up with the goods out of nowhere and turning defeats into draws and draws into wins. Newcastle have really good fixtures coming up but they have people missing in defence. If they can sort themselves out and start getting a foothold in possession in games then they can be strong contenders for top 4. Santon looks class btw, he has gotten better and better since coming to the PL.

edit: Also want to say that transferring in Suarez has been the best thing that has ever happened to me on fantasy footy. Transferring out RVP for Ba though has been disastrous so far...

lol brilliant gif. Magical goal by Suarez but overall another disappointing result. At least Lee doesn't get any bragging rights. Also Suarez's reactions are hilarious but it was a definite red card for Coloccini.

The fact you feel dropping points at home to a side that was in the Championship two years ago (and according to your fellow fan still has Championship players) and spent virtually nothing in the summer in contrast to you doesn't yield bragging rights shows just how far you've fallen.

We've had a poor season and still sit comfortably above your lot. We have joined Everton on the ever-growing list of teams that you can bet on to finish above Liverpool.

Once upon a time if we'd went to Anfield and got a point it'd have given us huge bragging rights. Now it feels no different to a point from the Hawthorns or Villa Park. It's a funny old game...

lol at gerrard having around five to six 30 yard shots blocked before even entering the box

some comments on the game:

- suso and wisdom are definitely championship quality, however sterling is not
- sad that our undoing was a big hoof up the middle. didnt realise we were up against stoke v2
- suarez brings out the worst in defenders and i am glad he doesnt play for the team i support
- liverpool were the better team and just need a striker that will allow suarez to drop off and receive the ball. every time he got the ball he looked dangerous but often times he picked it up outside the final third and no one was in the box
- santon is a more than adequate replacement for enrique

Honestly Lee, I think the result is very disappointing for Newcastle as they had a few chances to add a second and they wasted them. I moment that stands out to me as really bad was when Ben Arfa (I think it was him) intercepted a pass in Liverpool's half and he tried to curl a long shot in when he wasn't under pressure from the defence and he had a team mate nearby.

Suarez is 1 yellow from a suspension. It pains me to think who will play striker when he gets the yellow. I like how when Liverpool make a more direct play (the kick forward to Suarez), they score. That goal was like the Anti-Brendan Rodgers goal.

We might as well turn into Liverpool fans and start talking about HISTORY a lot more.

Every time I banter with my brother, Liverpool's history is his only counter argument. Considering he was born in 94 and wasn't alive for any of it, he doesn't have much of a leg to stand on.

We do have a lot of injuries at the moment (but so do most clubs I suppose). Wilshere and Sagna have come back but Ox, Szczesny, Gibbs, Diaby, Rosicky (and Gervinho) are still out. That is quite a contigent of the first team. It's the absense of Gibbs down the left that has hurt us the most, along with no midfield enforcers available - we could play Coquelin but Wenger clearly thinks he is not good enough. We'd have much more control of games if we had Diaby or Frimpong back, and Gibbs has been one of our main attacking outlets.

The problem recently imo is that Santos looks like he's been explicitly told to not go forward. He never makes any overlapping runs so Podolski is much more restricted when he gets the ball. This is in great contrast to Gibbs who played further up than Podolski (despite being left back!) and they had a great understanding and doubled up on the opponent's right back time and again. Podolski was flying when he had someone running beside him and looked to be scoring freely but not anymore. This wouldn't be that great a problem if we had a good right wing but Wenger has been playing Ramsey there where we used to have Ox. Not gonna bash Ramsey but it's worth pointing out that he is a central midfielder not a winger. He is playing in central midfield most of the time and this leaves Sagna to do all of the attacking and defending on the right flank. As good as Sagna is, he needs a Walcott or Ox to stretch the opposition in front of him or else he just can't get forward that often.

So from what I've seen, Arsenal just haven't had any width since the international break when Gibbs, Ox and Walcott got injured. Giroud just isn't good enough to create chances out of nothing, and the lack of a midfield enforcer has made us much easier to move through (I think I've voiced my opinion before of what I think of the Cazorla, Ramsey, Arteta midfield). Bottom line is, Wenger needs Gibbs back asap because Santos cannot defend even if he doesn't go forward and the team is basically carrying a liability. Hence why I think Wenger needs to buy a proper left back to compete with Gibbs, and a proper good striker that can make something happen once in a game or two (or at least give Giroud better competition than Gervinho!)

Well that was the nicest rant ever! Will fill up with expletives next time.

I envy ya.I can't discuss or argue about football with mine because he's a staple of United's Indian fan following;they don't know anything, they don't watch the games but they insist that they're die-hard United fans.I've teased him thrice already since the season began and he still can't name all the new players United signed. It's so damn hard to find a real fan here you'd think I was looking for a kidney.

EDIT:FYI the last time I accused him of being a hypocrite he said, and I quote,"I dislike the theoretical side of football." What a load of crap.

FYI you're a chelsea fan, good luck lecturing someone else on being a plastic fan when you support a plastic club.

Every single team has some sort of history. We just all measure it differently. For me, history is being the best London club in 1935. It's winning the War Cup in 1942. It's being the only club to win the fourth tier under all three of its names. I don't care that we're not signing big players, but I also don't think that being a small club makes us any better than a big club.

Would still fucking kill to get European football at any point before I die though!

MOSES CLUTCH

and that game was interesting. shakhtar played better than chelsea as a team, but the blues' individual talents are beast. still, chelsea needs a top striker and a top defender, if they want a good result in the round of 16, should they qualify.

barcelona lost to celtic o.O

I really want Celtic to progress into the knockout stages. It was unlucky for them not to grab a point at the Nou Camp, but congratulations on revenge! I feel Barcelona aren't the team they used to be.

Also, United have another close shave, another good comeback. Chelsea underperformed, but Oscar...

Phew that was close. That goal reminded me of Drogba's header in the final.I hear ya Blue Star,Torres just isn't cutting it and Di Matteo just won't give Sturridge(who I still think is better than Torres)a good run of games. We MUST buy a striker in the transfer window and maybe another CB.

@akuchi I think the fact that I actually keep track of the performance of the club I claim to support and all the news that is related to it qualifies me to judge such "fans" and it has nothing to do with the club I support or anyone's opinion of it,least of all yours.

You're throwing a tantrum as your club sits in an excellent position to reach the last 16 of the Champions League for what must be like the 10th time in 15 years or something absurd. And yet you feel hard done by? Lemme show you some snippets from my memories as a Newcastle fan.

- top of the league Christmas 95, having opened up a 12 point lead on Man Utd. Threw it away. Biggest lead ever thrown away in the league if memory serves?

- FA Cup final in both 98 and 99 and losing both.

- failing to reach the champions league in 2003 after losing our qualifier with partizan belgrade

- having never seen my club lift silverware (sans the Championship, which leads me to my next point)

- we got fucking relegated

and still proud to support my team through it all so yeah, you were right to expect me to call you out on your disloyal and plastic attitude - I can't even begin to fathom how a fan could act that way, even moreso when he supports a team that has consistently proven itself to be one of the best clubs in Europe. must be a mentality thing - gonna butcher a quote here but its apt; 'think not what your club can do for you but what you can do for your club'

and I'm not playing the victim because i realise we have fans here who support Barnet and other such clubs that could only dream of European football and they would probably kill to have some of the accolades I just listed in a negative sense but if I'm bemused by your attitude imagine how it must look to them!

yo we're all good down here, Brentford beat recent Europa League particpants Portsmouth 1-0 at Fratton Park! A few years ago they were beating AC Milan there, how times have changes. Just two points off playoffs now, come on you bees.

watched the chelsea/shakhtar game at school today, so damn entertaining. shakhtar is class. oscar's goal was amazing and then that last second header completed an already great game.
