DP Research Thread #1 ("Old")

i've noticed something during wifi battles that i wondered about before, but now after it happening in two battles in a row, i think there may be some truth to it.

does the % of the added effect to moves increase on a switch? in my last battle, i switched my Azumarill into a Moltres' Flamethrower and it got burned instantly. later in the battle, i switched my Forretress into a Kingdra's Ice Beam and it froze instantly as well.

in the battle before that, i switched two of my pokemon into a Flamethrower and they both were burned. has anyone else experienced this?

That's most likely an example of only remembering the anomalous data. The times you aren't statused on a switch are not memorable, so they go unreported.

i'm sure that could be it, but a majority of the times, i switch something that is completely immune to a specific kind of attack, which would negate the chance of being statused anyway. of the times i've switched in something that takes the hit as not-effective damage instead, it gets statused a good portion of the time.

either way, i want to test it, but how do you suppose i should go about doing so? i've only experienced it over WiFi.

Get into a Double Battle somewhere in the game using the Vs Seeker (I like to use the twins south of Floraroma). Switch one of your Pokémon out while the other uses an attack that has an added effect.

Good luck! I'm eager to hear your findings!

I have a question about the item Metronome... Does the power increase work for attacks that have multiple hits in them? i.e. if I use bone rush, will the power increase with each attack in the same bone rush?

Nope, it doesn't. I believe that's mentioned earlier in the thread. Perhaps it's time to update the main page?

EDIT: Guys, I'm taking a little vacation from Smogon. I made a couple mistakes and got into some bad politics. Being here kinda just stresses me out right now, so I'm taking a couple weeks off. Boa, could you please finish the tests on Gravity while I'm gone?

I don't see it on the list yet, but I've found that Wake-Up Slap will hit things using Fly.

Was just training an Aerodactyl (in-game, having fun with random egg from WiFi), and while in the air on Fly, a Machoke whacked me with Wake-Up Slap. Seemed to do normal damage though.

no guard machop line can hit stuff thats flying/digging/diving god when will people read the first page of this topic

I'll do Gravity research on Monday- Going to be in Virginia all weekend, away from a computer.

Welcome to my back yard, Boa.

Sorry to see you go, Footnote. I'll be on AIM at night if you still want to chat once in a while. I hope things work out for you to where you can come back.

To answer striker64's question on the previous page, I've done some testing and I've found that Substitute and Belly Drum do take away a Cleffa/Clefairy/Clefable's HP with Magic Guard (admittedly, I had anticipated this... it'd seem too good to be true if they didn't deduct the HP).

What about Perish Song? Pain Split? Destiny Bond? Nightmare (it probably protects against this, much like Leech Seed)?

I may actually test these myself, once I've gotten the National Dex.

In an unrelated question, if a ditto transforms into a pokemon that has had skill swap used on it, does it copy the original ability, or the swapped one? (It's an interesting question, because of the potential for you to transform into a Slaking that has had Truant removed from it). In a similar question, if you use skill swap on the ditto before the transformation, does it retain the ability it swapped to, or does it revert to the ability of the pokemon it transforms into?

Again, I may test this myself once I've gotten the Nat Dex.

You can't test it out with Gravity- I can tell you that a Pokémon using a 100% accuracy attack on a Blissey that has used Minimize three times will only hit Blissey 3/4 of the time, and if the Blissey switches out, then the user will hit all of the time.

After more testing, I've found that Magic Guard protects Clefairy from Nightmare, but not Perish Song.

Also, Destiny Bond does KO a Clefairy with Magic Guard.

Additionally, a Clefairy using Pain Split (via Metronome) causes it to lose some HP, which could possibly mean that a Clefairy that is attacked with Pain Split will lose HP as well.

Dusknoir used Gravity!
Gravity intensified!
Magikarp is unable to use Splash due to Gravity!

Poor Magikarp. All it wanted to do was to Splash around. <_<

OK, well i did exactly what you suggested, and to put it quite simply, the results are inconclusive to say the least. they more than anything lean towards no effect increase on a switch.

i used a Lickitung with Ice Beam, Flamethrower, and Thunderbolt along with a Tangela who switched in and out with Staraptor.

with Ice Beam, there was only 2 FRZ out of 50 attacks.

with Flamethrower, there was actually 16 BRN out of 40 attacks.

with Thunderbolt, there was 7 PAR out of 40 attacks.

after seeing the massive amount of burns, i tested it again and actually got 12 BRN out of 40 attacks. so that comes out to a total of 28 BRN out of 80 attacks, which is about 35% BRN rate.

the overall total for all of the set 10% added effects came to 37 out of 170, which comes to a 21.8% rate. this is just about double the expected rate of 10%, but it doesn't quite encompass the experiences i've had over WiFi battles.

do you think that there is a possibility that the rate boost in question is given only when the opponent switches? i'm not very aware of the game mechanics, but i'd hate to think that it is a possibility and perhaps i was going about testing it the wrong way.

Ahahaha
Oh that's just great.
Seriously.

As for your results, Samson, I find the findings quite odd. I don't see why something like that would happen, but hey. You never know.
It's possible that the results were just a fluke, but yet, the amount of times you tested it kind of stops that theory.

I have an ability question.

We know that Intimidate acts "funny" sometimes during double switches. Example:

Player 1 withdrew X!
Player 1 sent out Salamence!
Salamence intimidated Y!
Player 2 withdrew Y!
Player 2 sent out Z!

…And in this example, Z wasn't affected by Intimidate.

My question is: Does this affect other abilities? A possible example with Trace would look like this I guess:

Player 1 withdrew Gliscor!
Player 1 sent out Gardevoir!
Gardevoir Traced Trapinch's Arena Trap!
Player 2 withdrew Trapinch!
Player 2 sent out Z!

…And in this case, Z would get trapped by Arena Trap ( if applicable ).

Has anyone encountered this?
