Media One Piece (spoilers!)

In any case, just pointing out that just because a character uses a sword, you can't assume that he is weaker than Hawkeye in overall strength.

Calling it now, Mihawk's sword is enchanted so he increases in power exponentially whenever someone on Earth attempts to use a sword. That's why he only uses one-handed baseball swings, because he has a power level in the billions and any effort put into fighting will probably destroy the planet.

-.- Don't be dumb.

Hawkeye is strong, but his character is fundamentally limited in the scope of One Piece. His position in the story as "the greatest swordsman" automatically labels him as "NOT the strongest man."

Otherwise, he would have the title of strongest man, not the strongest swordsman.

If this guy's the new admiral, that would imply Mihawk is even more monstrously OP than we thought.

Wait which admiral exactly isn't noticably stronger than Mihawk? So far he doesn't even seem to be a swordsman, but uses the sword as a gateway to whatever ability he uses. If this guy's the new admiral I fully expect him to be able to destroy Mihawk.

Well, "destroy" might be a bit much for a guy who rivals Shanks, but I do think he'd certainly beat him.

@Chou you realize i'm joking, right?

Yeah, I'm sure Akainu/Kizaru/Kuzan could all destroy the World's strongest swordsman, who used to fight one of the Yonkou on equal terms......

Mihawk is one of the strongest characters in OP. He's right up there. I'm not saying he could beat any of the Admirals one on one (though he might), its nowhere near as big a difference as you make it out to be. Mihawk is IMO, easily the strongest Shichibukai, and, for all we know, could be Admiral/Yonkou level.

I agree with you, Coronis, although I don't think he's stronger than either of the Admirals and I don't think he's quite as powerful as Shanks. Still, I'd definitely put him in the top 5.

Mihawk doesn't rival Shanks, he used to, when both were young, and in sword fights, in an actual fight Shanks >> Mihawk.

Gateway to wahhhh??? He has no abilities!!! Oda has said it many times. He is that strong. His mere, casual swing is strong enough to cut an iceberg several hundred feet away. If thats just a casual swing, can you imagine the horror he can create with actual techniques?? So far he has just used simple slashes.

I don't think the new guy is a shichi or admiral, since people recognize shichibukai and admirals whenever they appear, usually immediately, because you have to be infamous to be a shichibukai, and admirals are the wg's strongest military force and therefore pretty high profile

Mihawk has not displayed his true abilities in every translation I've read he said that he wanted to find out the true "distance" between himself and Whitebeard, he seemed to have been measuring how far away he was, logical as some of his attacks like the one he was about to use on Luffy require a certain range. This new guy whether or not he is the new admiral is probably not stronger than Mihawk at Swordplay. Also since it seems that he needed to unsheath his sword first I think that his sword ate the devil fruit not him assuming it was in fact a devil fruit. It could have been his overwhelming prescense that crushed them all to the floor like CoC

..................それってマジで言っているの?(Are you serious bro?) Prepare for a little lesson in Japanese.

「推し量るだけだ。。。近くに見える。。。あの男と。。。われわれの。。。本当の距離を!」-ジュラキュール・ミホーク

"I simply wish to surmise it... I can see it closely... between that man... and myself... the true difference!" --Dracule Mihawk

Note: 「距離」(kyori) is most often used to mean "distance" but it has a secondary meaning of "difference", synonymic with 相違(soui) (difference between, discrepancy), or 程度の差 (difference of degree), as in 力の程度の差(the difference in our degree of power). exp: 私たちの考えには大きな距離がある (watashi tachi no kangae ni ha ooki na kyori ga aru. There is a great difference in our opinions.)

From context, and from the "lines" thought by characters regarding Mihawk's assault on WB, it's completely obvious that Mihawk is talking about the difference in power-- the word "distance" is used symbolically, referring to the distance between them in strength.

NOT literal distance...

I couldn't be bothered to hunt down the episode, so I found this vid. I can't read German and I assume you can't either so I'll just translate the Japanese for you.

Random Marines:
ジュラキュール・ミホーク!
It's Dracule Mihawk!
王下質武海がついに--!
One of the 7 lords is finally--!

Kizaru:
珍しい事も、あるもんだね〜
Well, rare things, do happen~

Akainu:
あの気紛れな鷹の目が戦う気になっちょるようじゃのう。。。
For that capricious "Taka no Me" (Hawk's Eye) to actually feel like fighting...
(Man, I hate Akainu, but Shikoku dialect is so cool. I wonder why they randomly made him have a dialect though, especially such an obscure one. @.@)

Doflamingo:
ひん、何だ?やんのか、お前?
What? You going for it?

Mihawk:
推し量るだけだ。。。近くに見える。。。あの男と。。。われわれの。。。本当の距離を!
"I simply wish to surmise it... I can see it closely... between that man... and myself... the true difference!"

Obviously, he's just trying to measure distance for his attacks... you know, because everyone's surprised that he's attacking to begin with...

Considering Shanks is a swordsman it does imply that Mihawk is, if only a little, stronger then one of the Yonkou.

Since the Yonkou are the only group in One piece who have shown to be capable of fighting on par and even winning against the admirals, it is in fact possible that Mihawk is the strongest character that has been revealed so far in the series.

We don't know yet however, the battling prowess of Kaidou and Big mom so they might be stronger then Mihawk still.

I don't know if shanks is necessarily defined as a swordsman just because he carries a sword. There is a difference, for instance, between yassop and blackbeard even though they both carry guns. yassop is a sniper/dedicated gunman and that's clear. it's also clear that blackbeard is not the same type of gunman as yassop; he just has and uses the guns for convenience. I think it is the same with shanks and his sword. in shanks's case, the sword is a vehicle to use his power while in mihawk's case, the sword is an integral part of his identity.

hence, I don't buy that mihawk is definitely stronger than shanks. he might be, but we can't assume it solely based on shanks carrying a sword.

Gekko Moria used to fight Kaidou on equal terms. Nowadays, he gets beat up by the Strawhat pirates... Based on what feats we've seen in the war, Mihawk has nothing on Doflamingo, they're equals at best for Mihawk. Whitebeard, Jozu, and Marco pretty much treated him like a joke during the war, WB didn't even budge when Mihawk launched "the world's strongest slash" at him, Jozu decided to jump right in front of it because he knew it'd do nothing, and Marco didn't even find him worth fighting, and instead made Vista fight Mihawk while he ran off to fight Kizaru. While I have no doubt Mihawk>Vista, he's not better by leaps and bounds or anything. Meanwhile Doflamingo casually comes in and stops Jozu from beating the crap out of Croc, who earlier was doing decently against Mihawk (again I concede that in a drawn out fight Croc would certainly lose).

Mihawk is definitely strong, but to put him on the level of a Yonko or Admiral is severely overrating him.

Gekko Moria used to fight Kaidou on equal terms.

They fought once and he got destroyed.

Also, you have to keep in mind that Mihawk will almost definitely be Zoro's "endgame", and at that point it wouldn't make sense for him to be that much weaker than the Admirals when Luffy is fighting guys like Akainu and Blackbeard.

Now I think we're underrating Mihawk, and Jozu/Vista for that matter. Just because these super strong elites of WB's army could handle some of Mihawk's attacks doesn't make Mihawk weak-- it means they're really really strong.

I mean, WB was on par with Roger-- it would make sense that his strongest crew should at least be approaching Reyleigh's level. I mean the same magma attacks that burnt ace, Marco just regenerated off without much thought.

Hawkeye is definitely one of the strongest characters of the series. And all these characters are so strong, we can't exactly rank them (especially since OP battles do have more random interactions-- this isn't dbz).

Seconding the fact that we're probably underrating Hawkeye. I mean Zoro trained under him very recently, and I think Oda would have mentioned if Zoro surpassed him so I think Hawkeye is still more powerful than Zoro (it might be really close though, I have no direct proof, this is all guessing). Zoro might not be the strongest compared to some other monsters like yonkos and whatnot (yet anyways), but he's still really legit.

Ace, I think you're overestimating the Strawhats a little. We're barely half way through the series, from a storytelling perspecitive it wouldn't make sense for them to be that powerful yet.

Has this ever actually been said anywhere? I don't know whete this misconception has come from. As far as I know, Moriah's first crew got destroyed by Kaido. Nobody has ever said they fought on equal terms. Obviously Jozu could handle the slash, as far as we know, nothing can cut diamond, not even Mihawk.

I dunno what else Shanks would be, if he's not a swordsman. I mean, all we've seen him with is his sword. Plus, his Haki.

Naw, Zoro's last opponent is going to be Shiliew with Jozu's fruit (BB's crew is going around taking powerful fruits after all). Daz Bone's said something along the lines of "what will you cut next? diamond?" Mihawk doesn't seem like the type of character who'd join the WG just for protection, he's more likely another Kuma, one of the "good guys" who have joined with unknown intentions to the audience. Zoro doesn't need to beat Mihawk 1v1 to be considered the world's #1 swordsman, if he can cut diamond, he's #1.
