Another Australian tournament

I wouldn't dare use Double Team in 2v2. edit: Oh it's probably not 2v2 anyway what am I thinking.

Reckon they'll let us get away with some of the Legendaries? One of my friends was considering using some of the stuff that should be restricted, but isn't on their list.
I don't know about Soul Dew as technically it's still an event item in Australia, though wifi trading can reach across the globe, but I suspect the Latis will be allowed. It wouldn't be a horrible idea to bring a backup team just in case, though. And if you can get away with a Soul Dew Lati, well, the tournament is yours until someone else shows up with one.

As far as the other legendaries go (the ones that don't have >= 670 base stat totals, that is), there should be absolutely no issue with getting away with them.

Why does Australia get this kind of thing but Canada does not? we are a British colony too!

also I believe that standard cup has the same rules as the battle tower (so ther is no Giratina), but your levels aren't scaled down. It's almost stadium mode atleast...

so im the only sydney pokemon guy?

sigh

am i underprepared or what, prolly coz i didnt touch anything pokemon between last thing and this tournament

lots to catch up on...

or is everyone feeling this way?

everyone say hi to me if you see some asian guy... bit vague... but meh

Yea, I'm hitting up the Sydney tournament. Guess I'll see you there.

So who went to the Fountain gate one on Sunday? I was up on the big screen during the first round - the one with a magmortar named COSISCHEAP (thank steelicks for that nickname) . I lost in the third round though - oh well.

It's actually pretty well organised, but I hate it how the rounds were so far apart. Round one started at about 11am, round 2 started at 1pm, round 3 started at 2pm...

To those who have yet to compete; I saw lots of blisseys, gengars, uxie/azelf/mesprit, infernape, garchomp, empoleon, alakazam, torterra...and surprisingly a few dragonairs. Oh and I saw a rhyperior. >< Latias made an appearance. So yeah, most of the pokemon are standards.

The pokemon to fear is none other than pachirisu. When you think you can OHKO, you've underestimated it! It'll survive to send discharges shivering down your pokemon's spine.

Good luck to those who have yet to compete - the prizes are really tempting.

Man, those prizes are making me nervous. Ether, were many of the teams EV trained, or were they just 3 random Pokemon? And how was the skill level of all the people there?

I didnt really ask anyone, but there were a fair number of people who knew what they were on about. I for one hoped that there wouldn't be many teams that were EV trained so I didn't EV train myself besides using HP Ups on my vaporeon. My team of mojonbo, cosischeap (magmortar) and vappy lost to an espeon, froslass and garchomp, where espeon wore my vappy down much more quickly than I expected - so that espeon might have been EV trained.

Don't expect everyone to be kids, you'll find people in their late teens to their twenties who probably EV trains.

If you're going for the prize, I would suggest EV training and having a proper team. Practice with that team in the battle tower to a point where the AI will have teams that counter all your pokemon and see how you deal with that.

I made my mistake and didn't get any battle tower practice - I could have tweaked my team a little (like starting with magmortar instead of vaporeon) that may have helped me in the long run.

You'll find people with level 30 pokemon, and if you encounter those you've got yourself a free pass to the next round. So good luck!

Only 128 can enter, so remember to register on the day early.

Ether, my team is on your PM (Don't need any spies). For anyone going to QLD, if you see a guy in a suit, it's me.

it is 3 on 3. You choose the 3 pokemon you enter at the start of the battle.

As for people dressing up...there were 2 twins who both dressed as pikachu. There were 2 others, but I couldn't see them because I was behind a bunch of tall guys at the time of choosing the dress up winner. I saw the winner have 2 brown ears though.

As for trivia, there will be heaps of other people who know the answer and so it's pretty much based on luck - whether you get chosen to answer or not. Since it's just a big crowd with their arms raised up high, the chance of you getting chosen is quite slim. The prizes for trivia aren't too bad though! I think there were DS games, Wii games, electric figurines, pokemon dvds etc. up for grabs.

The questions that I remember were like, what type of pokemon is rotom and err, which move is stronger, surf or waterfall.

Ahh, I see. So you have 6 in your party which your opponent can see and then you pick three which you believe are best suited to beating your opponent?

Is it like Pokemon Stadium?

How many Pokemon are you guys planning to take? I'm going to it in 3 days, and I have 3. If it's like Stadium, I'm wondering whether to get some other members without great IV's, or just use dummies to make the opponent plan for the members I'll never use.

I got there late and so couldn't enter in to the southland one.
=(

a lot of people there don't know what they're doing. I saw a guy with strength bronzong and another using a lv. 32 floatzel and a lv. 20ish staravia.

most of the tactics were to sleep whore with gengar so I probably wouldn't have fared that well if I came up against one.

I think I only lost one battle when searching for randoms, and that was against a semifinalist who critted my gliscor twice.

I remember at the last event they just threw your cartridge in a GBA Micro and said "All clear". They probably look for obvious hacks, but from what I noticed they were only checking teams for Pokemon/Item clauses.

There are 2 areas where the tournament battle occurs.

One area has 4 stations each station has2 DSlites connected together. You go in, put in your game card and go into wireless play, standard cup. Neither players get to see each other's pokemon beforehand.

The second area has only 1 station, but one of the DSlites is connected to a giant screen for everyone to see. However, only the top screen is projected. This DSlite will be the "leader" when creating the game. The 'joiner' will connect, and choose their pokemon while you wait. Once the joiner's pokemon has been chosen, you select your pokemon. Everyone can see what pokemon you choose, including your opponent because the top screen is on the large TV. Like normal you choose your 3 pokemon and the battle starts. This gives the joiner a slight advantage as they can plot strategies against the 3 pokemon you use before hand.

Thanks for the heads-up. How exactly do they check your cartridge?

So sorely tempted to take Friday 20 off..at least I've got a good two weeks to prepare*
Jusmastra's right. Before you start your first round they take your DS card, check whether it's in a pokemon centre, the pokemon you use etc. They had mine for about a minute before they returned it.

You only need 3 pokemon. However, many have a team of 6 so they have a choice when it comes to choosing pokemon. You don't really see the opponent's pokemon beforehand, so it won't really help.

Well, no-one's confirmed what we're using to fight with yet. It's implied that you register six but play with three, so I guess I'll register six (one of which will be an oddish).

If they just check with a DS instead of anything special then it should be feasible to shark, which certainly takes a lot of time away from preparation.

As long as the pokemon in your team comply with the rules, it should be fine. The registration process at the start is pretty much taking down your name, address, contact numbers and email addresses so they can spam you with sms's and what not. When they actually start you hand in your registration form and they give you a connection tour pass, and if you are competing you'll have an entrant number written on it.

As for sharking, it might be feasible. We really need someone who sharked and attended the tournament to find out, don't we?

Is there no Sleep Clause, or is that automatically enforced by the rules of the Cup (much like in Stadium)?

Pretty much if your pokemon can be entered in a 1v1 wireless single battle standard cup game, then you will be able to use them. I saw gengar with the hypnosis+dream eater combo, but I never saw a time where more than one pokemon was asleep at a time.

Woo massive post. ah well.

I think FEAR would be a very viable option in this tournament.

Edit: Fuck. The night before/morning of tournament, I'm now going over to a movie marathon sleepover with my girlfriend. 3 weeks of training ruined. I look forward to reading the QLD players stories, and I wish I could be there. Good luck to all Smogoners, I hope you do well.

Wow shit, you don't even need to bring your own DS? I could just burrow a friend's until the tournament instead of buying one if that's the case.

That would be a valid conclusion I suppose. You have to use their supplied DS' because they're wired - otherwise we'll have a whole lot of wireless games about and everything could screw up.
