Countdown to XY: A Nostalgia Thread

Day 1: What is your first memory of Pokémon? I might have seen the anime sooner, but my first real memory of Pokémon was opening a pack of 2nd Edition Pokémon cards. All I remember from that pack was a Metapod and a Bulbasaur. I have that Bulbasaur still, no word on Metapod though.
Day 2: What was your first experience with a shiny Pokémon? Probably Red Gyarados. Aside from that though, it would probably be a shiny Marill I didn't have PokeBalls to catch with in Ruby :( I caught a shiny Numel later, named it SUPERNUMEL, and was really afraid to evolve it because I didn't think it would be shiny after evolving. I later found this wasn't true and was very happy... and then my younger brother restarted my game on me. I still haven't forgiven him entirely. I eventually caught another shiny Camerupt, and named it Memorerupt in... well, memory.
Day 3: How close have you come to "catching 'em all"? I've never obtained a legitimate Deoxys, Genesect (PokeCheck doesn't count) or Swoobat. That's it.
Day 4: What was your first level 100 Pokémon? Typhlosion in Pokémon Silver. One of my brothers wiped that save file too...
Day 5: What is your favorite Pokémon and why? If I had to pick one: Tynamo - it is the most adorable thing ever omg
Day 6: Which Pokémon rumors did you believe when you were younger? HOLD EVERY BUTTON OR YOU CAN'T CATCH GROUDON. I also believed for a short time that Solarbeam didn't work against faster Pokémon in Sun. I was trying to catch Groudon at the time using Rayquaza, so...
Day 7: Which aspect of XY are you looking forward to the most? I can't really pick one thing. I'm pretty much hyped for everything. Perhaps the "whole new adventure" aspect. I still had it in BW and BW2, even though I knew many or all of the Pokémon beforehand - Unova was absolutely beautiful to look at and to listen to, and watching the intro segue into Aspertia City's beautiful music together with my girlfriend is an experience I'll never forget.
Day 8: What are your Pokémon "quirks"? I'm not sure how much of a "quirk" this really is, but I'm not bothered by competitive aspects of the game when I play the story. I hear all the time that "oh no I know competitive Pokémon now, my ingame experience is ruined" and I honestly think that's a load of horseshit. It makes it more interesting and adds a bit more depth, in my opinion. If I needed to grind in a certain area, I'd know that beating all of those Zubat would make my Pokémon faster and more likely to land big hits before the Gym Leaders. Ampharos became one of my favorite Pokémon after playing through White 2, and there are so many other Pokémon I've come to appreciate more because of their performance ingame - some of them competitively, even. I might never have used Serperior in NU if I didn't use it in White 2.
Day 9: What is your favorite region and why? Hoenn. I like water routes, and anyone who thinks that's weird can get the fuck out because I will crush you with a team of Pelipper / Wailord / Tentacruel / Sharpedo / Gorebyss / Lanturn. Unless you counterteam me. Asshole. Hoenn is also the place where Ruby and Emerald - two of my favorite games - took place. It's got a bit of everything.
Day 10: If you could change one thing about the Pokémon games, what would it be? Bring back the Game Corner :(
Day 11: What is your favorite mini-game? Original contests, Pokeathlon, and Voltorb Flip.
Day 12: Which song/theme is the most nostalgic? Well... shit. I'm never going to decide on this one.
The Pokemon main theme is always amazing. This is just one way to make it more amazing.
New Bark Town <3
Lugia's Theme from Pokemon 2000
Miror B's XD theme
I'm nowhere near done here. Chem lecture, gotta run

i will never forget my first shiny pokemon experience, it was in silver version before red gyarados. It was my first time playing thro the game, and i had just got to the bug catching contest, in hopes of finding a scyther (my fav gen1 mon). Time was almost up, and i hadnt caught anything, when suddenly it happened. I ran into a venonat, but he sparkled and was a different color ( i hadnt learned about shinies yet) and i thought that venonat was the fuking coolest thing ever. so of course i tried to catch it. i went through all 20 of my park balls, and didnt catch it. i was so fuking upset i reset my game thinking that venonant was like some super secret thing you could resest like a legendary, but i was horribly wrong. (i at least got my scyther when i reset)

Oooh... nostalgic themes...

Too many to count!

I guess (Kanto) Route 1 is a good start. (Kanto) Route 11 (Silence Bridge) is also majestic. Though, as AstralFire already linked the original, I guess I can link my favourite version of it instead: From Pokémon Stadium, Free Battle Menu. I think the theme perfectly captures the spirit of Pokémon; the freedom to roam the land, the grandeur of battle, friendship with your travelling companions. It's all in the song.

I really like most of R/B's soundtrack in general. Because of the limited sound capabilities of the GameBoy, the tunes had to be very simple. Thus, the focus of the tunes were the melodies, not the instruments. The composers made several beautiful melodies, that easily stuck in your head. Contrast the soundtrack of Diamond/Pearl, where most of the soundtrack was a cacaphony of noises, as if they were trying to show off how many instruments they could have playing at the same time. B/W and B/W 2 mitigated this a lot, though. The themes of Accumula Town or Flocessy town are just as good as many of the R/B themes.

Another I'd like to mention is Pokémon Colosseum's legendary Pyrite Town. A perfect soundtrack for a dirty town in the midst of nowhere, where all legal sources of income have long since dried up, and only the most stubborn inhabitants still live, with most new residents being people with something to hide. The sheriff in town can't even keep the criminals away from his own doorstep. The existence of a Pokémon Center in the town can be seen as proof that they are charity-funded. Nobody would otherwise bother to keep the service running in this lawless, desolate outback.

The tune is also fairly easy to play on piano. Here's a link, if anybody is interested:

Day 13: How do Colosseum/XD compare to other main-series games?

A few guiding questions:
Which aspects did you enjoy and why?
Which aspects did you dislike and why?
How would you improve upon these games if they followed a similar formula in the future?

You can focus on these or story/capture method/whatever you want.

I really loved yesterday's posts, even if they made my computer lag a bit. :]

Day 13: How do Colosseum/XD compare to other main-series games?

Unfortunately I never got to play XD since I stopped playing during gen 3 (when that gen was released I was annoyed I couldn't transfer any of my old pokemon to the new games) and I didn't pick it up again until the end of gen 4. I intend to pick up XD later in the year once I finish my Emerald run-through and everything else.

I think that Colosseum/XD provide a fun alternative to the other main-series games, and I feel like that concepts explored in those games are ones that would be great in another, similarly-styled game in this generation (or perhaps a Pokémon MMO).

Day 13: I horribly regret not playing Colleseum or XD, since i didnt ever own a GameCube, but i have seen playthroughs and seems like a better thought out plot than the standard of the games by then (aka, Ruby/Sapphire and Red/Blue). Shadow Lugia seemed really cool, and in general i liked the storyline, but i guess i dont like how the gameplay faired, since i have played Battle Revolution, which seemed very similar to both.

Day 13: Only played XD so I'll be using that
Which aspects did you enjoy and why?
I loved the new setting, Eevee starter, new concept of actually evil Pokemon. Shadow Lugia. Love that guy.

Which aspects did you dislike and why?
The quick travel. The place felt small because I couldn't wander the region like you could in the main games. Yeah we have Fly but couldn't have we got that later in XD instead of quick instant travel? I also didn't like the double battles at first but that grew on me.

How would you improve upon these games if they followed a similar formula in the future?
Expand the region, make it larger. Add in more Pokemon to catch/snag.

Overall, i enjoyed XD and would love another version of it for the WiiU

I've only played Colosseum once and never played XD, but from what I remember, Colosseum was as great as any main series game (and at times even better). Unlike in the main series games, Wes is a lot older, and begins his story by blowing up the Team Snagem base and riding a motorcycle with his Umbreon and Espeon. Wes was a bigger badass than any main series protagonist. The double battles were fun, and I loved the concept of Shadow Pokémon. The best part, however, was the Snag Machine. This is a feature that unfortunately will probably never get implemented in any main series game.

Day 13: Colosseum was easily one of my favorite Gamecube games (Starfox Assault being a close second). I love how the protaganist, Wes, was a former bad guy himself. Yet he renounced his ways, and defeated his old comrades, (and Cypher too!) in order to save Orre. The one thing I did dislike was Rui (canon name?) having to constantly follow you in order for you to know which Pokemon were shadow. Since Wes was the best snagger in Team Snagem, pretty sure he caught most of the shadow pokemon himself before the events of the game. Also, Espeon and Umbreon starters. AWESOME!!!

I missed a few day but might as well get involved now.

Day 1: What is your first memory of Pokémon?
Probably the Rare Candy Cheat and using them to make all my Pokemon level 100.

Day 2: What was your first experience with a shiny Pokémon?
All three of my experiences came in Sapphire and in a relatively short period of time. I first found a Phanpy in the Safari Zone and then after the next gym found a shiny Tentacool and then in Victory road found a Wonderful Shiny Zubat, Not bad for my first playthrough of the game.

Day 3: How close have you come to "catching 'em all"?
I believe in Pearl I had 350 of the 493 available and that was when i didn't really care about catching them all, In Gen 6 I will truly try however to get all 700+ pokemon.

Day 4: What was your first level 100 Pokémon?
I will go with the first legit one that wasn't Rare Candy Cheated. And that was Blaziken, My original Starter from Sapphire, not long after Both my Kyogre and Groudon Also achieved the feat.

Day 5: What is your favorite Pokémon and why?
Eelektross, I just really liked the design of it from day dot. My other favourites would have to include Gengar, Lucario, Metagross, Aggron, Bisharp Vaporeon, Arcanine, Golurk, Weavile, Flygon, Kingdra, Crobat, Seviper, Sceptile, Chespin, Pyroar, Skrelp, Aurorus, Fletchling, Honedge, Pangoro and Last but not least Furfrou.

Day 6: Which Pokémon rumors did you believe when you were younger?
I didn't really have any internet access when i was younger but the one I believed was that Black Rayquaza and Black Charizard were the most powerful pokemon ever just due to their colour.

Day 7: Which aspect of XY are you looking forward to the most?
BENCHES! LEDGE JUMPING! SKRELP! MEGA EVOLUTIONS! PYROAR! CHESPIN! MOTHER F'ING ALPHA FLETCHLING!

Day 8: What are your Pokémon "quirks"?
In-game, I always Train up my Pokemon very evenly and If I catch a new one It must reach an equal level before I continue. I also frequently ditch my starters nowadays to make the game more difficult and so I don't rely on it too much.
Meta-Game, I ALWAYS use Eelektross, I love how it can be used for any tier and actually be effective.

Day 9: What is your favorite region and why?
Hoenn, It's well designed and has overall the best introduced Pokemon.

Day 10: If you could change one thing about the Pokémon games, what would it be?The goddamn difficultly, I'm am rather sick of being able to Beat an entire game playing a Nuzlocke and Not losing a Pokemon, Like I don't even get a choice of what I use, I beat Wallace with a bloody Linoone (No ExtremeSpeed nor Belly drum). Which is why I was so happy about Challenge mode... Only to find out I had to beat the game to unlock it... Also I get really sick of the tutorials getting longer and longer each gen, Give us an option of only finding out the new stuff please Gamefreak.

Day 11: What is your favorite mini-game?Probably Contests and the Battle Tents Followed by the Bug Catching Contests. Ahh the memories.

Day 12: Which song/theme is the most nostalgic?Pokemon Johto Theme song or the Elite 4 theme from RBE.

Day 13: How do Colosseum/XD compare to other main-series games?I absolutely loved Colosseum but I never played XD, Colosseum was really intriguing in the way that you had to purify Pokemon and that it would take a substantial amount of time, Plus it was the only way to get Johto Starters until HG/SS.

Didn't play XD, but Colosseum was loads of fun. I didn't love having to snag Shadow Pokemon, but otherwise the differences from the main Pokemon games made it interesting. As much as I enjoy the diversity of available Pokemon in the main series games, working with more limited resources was also fun, and made me think about battle strategy and counterteaming opponents in ways the handheld games never do. I feel similarly about the fact that it was full of double battles; I wouldn't want to see that in the main series, but it was a fun change for one game. I settled on a final team near the end of the story, but with plenty of Mt. Battle left to fight. Between playing all the way through the game, having such a limited number of Pokemon available and never successfully connecting it to any of my other games, I became particularly attached to my team in a way that I normally don't. Too bad I no longer have those Pokemon, or the Ho-Oh I got, due to the aforementioned "never successfully connecting" issue and later the loss of my memory card. Still, there aren't many in-game teams that I remember so well long after they're gone.

sadly, i never got to play collosseuum or xd, but i did get the opportunity to browse through an XD guide when i was young. I think its a great detour from the main games.

I played both Colosseum and XD. Not sure if I ever finished XD, but I had great fun either way.

Colosseum certainly shows us another side of Pokémon. Many say its style is "post-apocalyptic", but I think "post-economic" is better. Orre is reminiscient of the American Old West, where communities bloomed due to the mining industry, only to be just as quickly abandoned when the mines ran empty. The big corporations left, there was never built any permanent infrastructure, and the towns and cities are now badly maintained. The region is pretty desolate, meaning that the law has very little influence, making it a perfect hiding place for criminal acts (it's hinted that Agate Village is the only settlement without a deeply-rooted crime problem). Various other luck-seekers also go to Orre, as well as some stubborn old residents who refuse to move away. In Colosseum, there are no wild Pokémon in Orre, so it isn't very attractive for travelling Pokémon Trainers. Though, that didn't stop an optimistic fellow from setting up a gym and applying for the title of Gym Leader.

I'd say the setting is Colosseum's strongest point. Pyrite Town is gorgeous in its run-down glory. The Under, the old mining station turned city is possibly the most atmospheric location in Pokémon, period (I was so angry to see it taken away in XD). You have the Outskirt Stand, the old train that broke down in the middle of a desert, later turned into a café. The café is the only shop in Orre importing Poké Balls, so you'll be visiting it a fair few times. There is the lush greenery of Agate Village, the great Mount Battle, aiming to be the prime battling location in the region, and of course Realgam Tower, the casino/stadium that is so clearly built with illegally earned money (sorry if I offend anybody, but it really reminded me of a post-Soviet East European luxury resort). The blown-up Team Snagem base is also a really cool place, although not a lot ever happens there.

The characters are also downright awesome. You have Miror B., the disco maniac. You battle him in a studio hidden deep within a cave, with four dancing Ludicolo as specators. There is Lady Venus, the mysterious woman infatuating half the population of The Under. Duking and the Kids Grid, playing la Rèsistance against the mafia. The optimistic pre-gym leader of Phenac, Justy. Ein, the creepy Cipher scientist. Mirakle B., the wannabe Miror B. who takes his place, imitates his style and steals his battle music (although it's off in both tune and tempo).

The only thing I didn't like about Colosseum was the poor selection of Pokémon. Not only was there a limited number of them (around 50, I believe), but they were also almost exclusively NU material. You got stuff like Dunsparce, Magcargo, Ledian, Noctowl and the like, 'mons with shallow movepools and terrible stats. I believe you also couldn't trade over any better Pokémon before you had cleared the main story and/or purified all of the Shadow Pokémon, meaning you were stuck with terribad Pokémon throughout the story.

Pokémon XD is a little lighter and brighter than Colosseum. A Pokémon prof. has moved into the region, and your family stay at his lab as assistants. The Pokémon HQ lab is wonderfully detailed, and located in a lush green setting, unlike the deserty rest of the region. After the (apparent) fall of Cipher, more people have moved to the region, The Under was filled in, and a new port town has been founded in the northwest. You also got a lot better Pokémon than in Colosseum, as this game came out after FRLG, and there was no need to restrict it to the Johto 'mons previously unobtainable in the main series. A few more characters were also introduced, and the evil team got themselves a scary new weapon (SPOILER: It's a Shadow Lugia, in case you couldn't tell by the cover or the opening cinematic). I'd say the environments of XD is even more detailed than in Colosseum, albeit some of the run-down desert atmosphere got sacrificed in the process. Oh, and you don't have to drag Rui around all the time. That alone makes it a little better.

Day 12: Which song/theme is the most nostalgic?
I'm not really a nostalgic person, it's mostly due to me having long term memory loss. I hardly remember anything from my childhood and it usually takes a photograph or something for me remember something from that age. I picked up Heartgold and played through the whole game; I enjoyed it, but I never felt nostalgic towards it. I then heard about the gba sounds item-thing and I wanted to get to hear the old music. Once I got it I started going to places to listen to the music and it was great. I than remembered that I really liked the Ecruteak City theme, so I went there, and the music started. I literally had goosebumps and I even started crying listening to that music. I had a ton of memories return to me about playing Gold when I little and remembering the experience of playing my very first Pokemon game. I can't really describe the feeling, it was like finding a piece of a puzzle that you've been looking for and finally being able to see the full image when you put it together. So yeah, this song just helps me remember my childhood.

I really really enjoyed Colosseum and XD. The 3D effects were great and the story was kinda out there but it was still solid. The fact that in the first game Mr Badass himself decides to have a heel face turn and try to stop Team Snagems plans by blowing the place apart and escaping with the Snag Device kinda blows every other intro out of the water. From there you save a kidnapped girl and then go around beating on the Cipher/Snagem admins and catch legendary dogs... Come on this game is all sorts of awesome. The only real downside is that there is a really limited amount of Pokemon and it's pretty easy to lose track of where to go next. I loved the fact every match in both games was a double battle. Also: Mt Battle and the Mt Battle Ho-Oh are totally worth doing.

In XD you are a smaller "cuter" protagonist but you still have the snag machine and now a cool little set of goggles to find Shadow Pokemon. I am not really a fan of starting with Eevee (Or Espeon/Umbreon) because I feel they only made it that as it was "the only option" that could make sense. At least in XD they gave you the choice of any of them pretty early in the game so you didn't miss out on any good moves. I also loved how big some of the models were, Ursaring was actually intimidating and Hariyama was really huge. Even Wailord kinda spilled off the arenas compared to other Pokemon.

As I said before, the only things I really disliked are the lack of available Pokemon. No wilds in Colo and only a select few in XD made teams pretty rigid... I don't think I ever didn't use Ursaring in XD because you got Teddiursa/access to Agate really early. I mean you can make a few varied teams, but most of the time they end up with at least one or two mons which are the same no matter what you try. I think if they did them again (which I doubt now) I think they would have to ramp up the exploration side of things a bit, there wasn't exactly a huge amount of areas to properly explore (A cave in Pyrite, the Ship in XD and then Citadark Isle/Realgam Tower). Most of the areas were really small before you were travelling off again.

Oh, and most badass Pokemon vehicle definitely goes to Wes:

Other people pretty much said almost all I wanted to say about Colosseum lol. I didn't play XD.

I liked the fact that you could get a second "starter" (I'm putting Espeon and Umbreon as one since you start with both) with the Johto mid-staged starters. It's interesting that this concept was repeated in 5th gen with the monkeys and it looks like it'll be happening more in the future (Kanto starters)!

Also stealing (shadow) Pokemon is the best thing ever. If they made more of these games in the future, the trainers whose Pokemon you steal from need some more expression. "Wtf man, that's my Pokemon!" "You thief! I'm reporting you to the police!" (and then they actually do it and now you're on the run... oh gosh i don't know where i'm going with this.)

No HMs to ever use is a plus. No stupid trees, boulders, etc blocking your path makes life so much better.

I liked how you actually had to play in colosseums (coliseums?) to progress in the story. That was a very different touch compared to the main games. In fact, I think that should be repeated and be implemented in the main games! It's a pretty awesome feeling to beat up all those A.I. noobs and be placed as the winner! (I know there's stuff like the Pokemon World Tournament but that's postgame.)

Memory too foggy. I only got to play Colosseum when I was at my cousin's house, but I visited frequently and beat the game. :D Catching strongmons at the end of the game is fun but there's not much to do with them. I want to crush people with Metagross and Tyranitar. :(

Day 1: What is your first memory of Pokémon?: Pretty sketchy, but I was a little kid at some place. I think I was allowed to play someone's Game Boy & it had Pokémon Blue in it. It had some team in it, idr what it was. Played a bit. I liked it, but did not have another experience until I got a Game Boy Colour & Pokémon Yellow for Christmas. I still have the things today.
Day 2: What was your first experience with a shiny Pokémon?: I already answered this earlier in the thread, but Shiny Phanpy on FireRed~~ <3
Day 3: How close have you come to "catching 'em all"?: I caught all the original 150 Pokémon on my old FireRed file, but I have never been as close since.
Day 4: What was your first level 100 Pokémon?: Typhlosion on an old Gold file. I was such a noob back then, only focusing on the starter, but repeated challenges of the Pokémon League helped me there. It is long gone now.
Day 5: What is your favourite Pokémon and why?: Gligar, & to a lesser extent, Gliscor. I have always had an indescribable feeling for the line ever since I first saw the art for Gligar & the Gligarman episode in the anime a long time ago. I even used Gligar in Platinum & well, yeah. Gligar & Gliscor <3
Day 6: Which Pokémon rumours did you believe when you were younger?: A + B + Down auto-catches a Pokémon. Never worked for me. Cannot really remember much else though. :|
Day 7: Which aspect of XY are you looking forward to the most?: 3D Generation. The 3D artworks, 3D models of all the Pokémon, & finally, testing out the new mons. I have both games on pre-order & fully paid, so I hope XY does not disappoint me... :|
Day 8: What are your Pokémon "quirks"?: When I throw a Poké Ball, I press & hold A + B + Down, because it has been ingrained in my mind so much that my reflexes automate me to do that. Additionally, my PC Boxes are ordered in groups separated by a Pokémon's Level. All the Lv1-10's in one box, 11-20, 21-30, 31-40, 41-50, 51-60, 61-70, 71-80, 81-90, 91-99, & finally, the Level 100 Pokémon. The Pokémon in each box are sorted by Level, then dex number, both in ascending order. If the box is full, then the rest of the Pokémon in that level bracket get moved to an Extra Box where all Pokémon of any level go, but those boxes follow the same order as the individual boxes. If there is a gap in the main level box, then those in the extra box will get moved back as appropriate. Pedantic much?
Day 9: What is your favourite region and why?: I have always had a soft spot for Sinnoh of all regions. Most of the Pokémon I like come from there, I have spent hours on end playing Pearl or Platinum, & I kinda liked the mythology of the place. It just never felt bad to me. Sure the games could have been better, but it does not mean I cannot like the region.
Day 10: If you could change one thing about the Pokémon games, what would it be?: Difficulty, & to a lesser extent, the in-game trainers. Most trainers are beleaguered by bad move-sets—particularly late-game—and bad AI (coughcoughbw2caitilincoughcough), and make me feel as if they do not offer me much of a challenge. Challenge Mode in BW2 helped alleviate this, but it was still not that great. I want to be challenged when I play the game. Have difficulty levels for the game, just like BW2, but have it accessible at the start of the game, as opposed to going through the entire B2 regularly & only being able to run through it on W2. Get rid of the key system. Have Normal Mode be genuinely normal, but Hard Mode should genuinely be difficult, increased levels, better move-sets (even on regular trainers), & make it so I will have a real challenge trying to beat the game. Heck, I would even accept it if Hard Mode was made to be Nintendo Hard. I just want the games to be properly difficult, even if it is limited to difficulty settings which are hopefully easily accessible.
Day 11: What is your favourite mini-game?: Pokéathlon by far. The games were genuinely fun, they made proper use of the touch screen, it was well designed, & it is something I would definitely play again & again. It is a shame it will prolly never make another appearance in the series again... :|
Day 12: Which song/theme is the most nostalgic?: Route 27/26 theme from GSC. The music feels so nostalgic, it gives you the sense of adventure, & it sends a shiver down my spine every time I hear it being played. The first steps into Kanto from the Johto region have never felt so... I am struggling for words, but the bottom line is that I feel it is the most nostalgic theme of the series. :)
Day 13: How do Colosseum/XD compare to other main-series games?: I have never owned a GameCube, let alone played the games, so I cannot give an actual comparison... :|

Day 13: I just went back to XD Gale of Darkness a week or two ago to pull out some of the Pokemon from that I wanted to keep for the Bank (and some that I needed because there was no way I was going to catch them in the GBA games or the DS games). So my love for it is fresh in my memory! I think XD Gale of Darkness was a surprisingly good Pokemon game, in some ways better than the main series games. Why? Because it was different. You aren't setting out on an adventure to collect 8 badges and defeat the Elite Four. You're just trying to put a stop to Team Cipher's plots to use Shadow Lugia to take over the world. You aren't forced to pick between a fire, grass, or water starter pokemon. You start with an Eevee, who has 5 potential evolutions for you to ultimately choose from, and it even gives you the option to make that selection early on in the game. The graphics were definitely solid and the 3D battles were fun to watch. The coliseums and Mt. Battle were especially fun to participate in. You could say XD Gale of Darkness was like Pokemon Stadium but with a cool storyline and concept with the Shadow Pokemon.

Day 1: What is your first memory of Pokémon?
--- This isn't the first time i played, but it's the first I remember. I was playing with my cousin and teaching her how to play. She picked Squirtle.
Day 2: What was your first experience with a shiny Pokémon?
--- Seeing them in a guide for Gold and Silver. I caught Red Gyarados previously but thought it was a one off thing. My first random encounter was with a Gastly in Fire Red.
Day 3: How close have you come to "catching 'em all"?
--- I hacked and got them all. Never gotten anywhere near close otherwise.
Day 4: What was your first level 100 Pokémon?
--- Nidoking. It was traded to me by my female friend, I thought of her as a girlfriend. I was about 11. She gave it to me at level 99 and told me to keep it. It was the first poke she had ever trained that high. Meant so much to me.
Day 5: What is your favorite Pokémon and why?
--- Espeon. I think it stems back to it being the first Pokemon I ever got from Happiness. I thought it was a brilliant Pokemon when I used it in game and the guide I had said it was the best Poke there was for taking on the elite 4 in Gold and Silver which is pretty much was for the first 3 members. I've loved it ever since.
Day 6: Which Pokémon rumors did you believe when you were younger?
--- All of them. Pressing A to get a higher catch chance. Venustoise. All the usuals.
Day 7: Which aspect of XY are you looking forward to the most?
--- I like the typing shake up. I feel it will be healthy for the game. Also sitting down. I've wanted to sit down for years.
Day 8: What are your Pokémon "quirks"?
--- I despise third gen. The tiles man, the tiles suck balls. Looking at the grass makes me cringe.
Day 9: What is your favorite region and why?
--- It used to be Johto. Second gen is my favorite. But in terms of actual region design, I feel that Sinnoh was a very well structured map.
Day 10: If you could change one thing about the Pokémon games, what would it be?
--- Make it grungier. There heaps of scope for some really heavy stuff in there, some hacks have gone into it hard, as has some fanfics I've read. There are lots of things that would be crazy levels of intense if it was geared towards a fully adult audience.
Day 11: What is your favorite mini-game?
--- Barrier Ball. Shit be cray.
Day 12: Which song/theme is the most nostalgic?
--- Pokemon Johto is a great song. I can do the Pokerap. But instead of a song I'm giving a shoutout to the first movie soundtrack. That thing was my life for about a decade.
Day 13: How do Colosseum/XD compare to other main-series games?
--- Never played XD so I can't comment and I've played a total of five minutes of Colosseum. So yeah can't really say much there.

Cobra has me beat pretty much, so I'll just add one thing in here: Double Battling. Having an entire game based around double battling made the playstyle much ore interesting to me. I really would love a spiritual successor to Colosseum that focused on triple battling if XY ends up keeping Triple Battles fairly marginalized. I like placement mattering.

Okay, I assumed a much larger number of people had played XD/Colo than this... my bad. I'll make sure to stick to handheld games in the future. Sorry guys! :[

If you have experience with the games, please share them so we have something nice to read today!

IMO, Stellar, I think this question was a fine question to ask, and I'd be interested reading apologia of Mystery Dungeon, a series I've never played for more than 10 minutes before I got bored. Not every good question can be general. As long as you don't machine-gun back-to-back "specific" questions that each exclude a big part of the community, I think we could do with a few more of these. My 2 Pidges.

Yeah, what AstralFire said. I know I had to shell out 50 bucks for my own copy of Colosseum when I was like 10, because my parents didn't want to pay that much for a Pokemon game. I'd say it's a fair bet that happened to some other people.
