ASB Warstory-Participation Applications

Read the application rules below if you want to apply for something.

Hello all, and let's all get ready for our first ASB Warstory! In case you don't know what this is, here's a handy description C/P'd from our Gen VI Prep Piratepad:

We're going to set up a great battle with two great battlers and ask both participators to collaborate on a round-by-round double commentary on the match. As the battle progresses, they will both record their thought processes while making orders, so as to ensure every detail is properly remembered. The commentary will not be unintelligible to people who don't play ASB, and it will be highly informative as to the thought process of the battlers, taking nothing but the most basic knowledge for granted (basic knowledge means things like "I set up hazards to make it harder for him to switch" require no explanation). The battle will be at least a 3v3 singles or 4v4 doubles+, so it can showcase longer-term strategy. The battle will be reffed with flavor so that the battle the warstory is based on is prettier and easier to follow.

So the purpose of this thread is to select the three people we'll need for this project. These are two battlers and one ref. To apply for one of these positions, simply post stating which role you are applying for. Extra information about why you're qualified for this is helpful but not required. For example:

Hi, I'm Venser and I'd like to battle for this. I have 4 Gym Badges, which I think qualifies me as an extremely intelligent battle that would make me well suited for this project.

Before you apply, read the rules below. If you're not sure if you can compete with other applicants but are qualified, I encourage you to sign up regardless. We want people from all walks of ASB.

Note that applying for being both a battler and a ref is allowed.

Battler Rules:

  • Be able to commit to keeping to a PROMPT 2 Day DQ for a somewhat substantial length of time (3v3 singles).
  • Be able to commit to writing down your thoughts on each of your turns (DQ will likely be less strict for this).
  • You should have at least competent English skills so you can effectively communicate your thoughts.
  • Include the name of a fruit in your application post.
  • Not required: being a great (or even good) battler. As long as you can effectively communicate your thought processes, that's fine.
Referee Rules:
  • Be able to commit to keeping to a PROMPT 3 Day DQ for a somewhat substantial length of time (3v3 singles).
  • Be able to write good (detailed, entertaining, etc.) flavor.
  • Include the name of a vegetable in your application post.
Remember this is not just to keep within ASB; we want to show what we can really do to the other parts of Smogon.

The deadline for applications is 10:00 PM on Friday, September 27. After this deadline, me (and possibly other people helping to run this project) will select the ref and battlers from the applicants.

Happy applying! :D

Greetings everyone.

I'm wanting to apply to be a contestant for this battle! I definitely intend to take on all comers. My qualifications include: Normal Gym Leadership, Reasonably good Tournament record, Raid master, and the fact that I'm no stranger to writing, including Roleplay.

Oh, and I'm a champion watermelon thrower! :p

I swear, I'm not THAT dumb. And if selected for this, I would try to be as coherent as possible as a battler.

I have little to no qualification? I think? Eh, I think I'm going bananas if I think I could get in...but I'll try anyway!

i think i have competent english skills and can use capital letters if i really really want to... as for the being a good battler thing, well, i won the team tourney which even though all tourneys are jokes has got to count for something. and unlike gerard, who is fruiter than coconut-mango garnier conditioner, i'm probably better at singles than doubles so this is perfect for me. i know i can commit to keeping the dqs because i'm not a giant john, so you should totally pick me.

I am applying to be in the battle.

I have a good team and I CAN battle well (even though I started off with a 0-9 record), especially if I am using the right Pokemon. I have challenged pretty much all the RPs here, as well as Electric gym (which taught me to SUB FOR SNATCH), and although I only barely got a streak on the Battle Subway recently, I am also a qualified Pike and Arcade ref. (speaking of which, I should really go actually REF something...) I also have a bit of English skills, although you should not depend on me to write essays.

Oh, and I also drink homemade watermelon juice (aka water).

I'm willing to throw my bowler into the ring.

I've been in this game for nearly 2 1/2 years, which is probably my biggest achievement. And I think I've lost to every single local mod at least once...? So I have experience fighting powerful opponents, and from that I've learnt a thing or two. And I have several gimmicks I've been waiting to try out, and isn't that part of ASB as well..? And, since Glacier quit, I think that I'd pear well with an opponent looking for a battle both fun and challenging.

Edit: also i am cooler than Pwnemon pls pick me

I'll opt in for possible selection, if chosen. No particular preference towards being in or out, though.

Applying to be a Referee for the match, because ofc, we need referees.

My referee experience stretches all the way back to April 2011, & ever since, I have been involved in reffing many things including The Legend Run, the Battle Subway, the Battle Pike, & the ASB Gym League. I have been historically lauded for being generally prompt in my reffings (rarely exceeding the DQ time), as well as being able to write half-decent flavour, & a rather low error rate with reffings. I would like to call my reffing format to be professional, organised, & easily understandable to some extent, but it is not perfect though (though I am always improving every now & then). I also tend to take my time when I actually ref things, taking more of a perfectionist approach. Making sure everything is done properly, making sure I try to include flavour in every referee post in battles I am reffing, & because of this, it will never take me less than half an hour to get a six-action singles round in. You can find examples of my reffings here, & ultimately, I can assure you lot that I will not let you guys down should I get the responsibility of refereeing the match.

Fun fact: I hate Peas. All kinds of Peas. Do not try to blend them into my food, because odds are I will find them & put them to one side. I very much dislike the texture of Peas which pretty much explains that.

I can communicate my thoughts and reasons effectively, I was the runner-up for the Normal gym, and I've written an Article for the smog.

I am a grape candidate for this.

Well, i might as well throw in my application.

Hi, I'm Julia. I'm still (sorta) new to the entire ASB thing, and that is why I feel like I should be one of the battlers here.

My inexperience would be an easy way for me to connect with the NON-ASB audience. It'll show that it's okay to make a mistake here or there, and to also try something new strategy-wise. As a writer, I'm decent. I can get my thoughts across clearly (for the most part) and I'm also pretty personable.

Also, I like Apples. But if fruit loops were an actual fruit, i'd write those in.

Well, I'm gonna be gone for a week, so whether or not I can actually pull this off depends on when the fight starts, but if I can, then I'm applying for refhood.

Oh come on, you guys know who I am. I'm the guy who's quick with the round-posting. I'm the guy who brings the good fluff. I'm the guy who gives the crunch that's devoid of errors (and quickly remedies the ones that get by). I'm the guy with the comprehensive formatting. I'm the guy who masquerades as you after you've kicked his ass in Battle Arcade. I'm the guy who has Emmet and Ingo kick the quirky locals of Not Seattle out of the Battle Subway. I'm the guy who's been dubbed by many as one of the best refs in ASB.

Want some examples? Take your pick.

The bottom line is this: You want a bitchin' ref? You go to me.

Also, corn. IT'S NOT DIFFERENT AT ALL, IS IT, STEVE?! MWAHAHAHAHA!!!

Hey,

So college applications (early season) is winding down so I have enough activity to actually ref this. In terms of qualifications, I am a competent facility ref, used to ref a ton of gym matches (~half the total at my high point), and can flavor as demonstrated by running a variety of flavor centered RP games, and most of the gym matches I was not forced to ref on a mobile. Which I won't do here because I'm not camping for a few months.

tl;dr: I can flavorz without going overboard, I speak English, and I don't often make mistakes. And I promise I can make DQ easily starting in about a week.

And carrots. Also Pizza, which according to the FDA is a vegetable.

Alright guys, let's get this going! Our two battlers are Louiscyphre and Maxim and our ref will be Its_A_Random. Congrats!

So now it's time to actually begin the battle. Here are a few pointers you guys need to read before we get started:

For the ref:
  • You will be posting the OP. The battle format is as follows: 3v3 Singles, 2 Subs, All Items, All Abilities
  • Arena: Flowering Meadow-a meadow during spring. A river flows through the side of the meadow. There are no move restrictions, this is just to have a less boring arena than the ASB arena.
  • Flavor flavor flavor. Use lots of flavor. Also be a little more lenient with flavor moves than usual.
  • Ref DQ is 3 days maximum. With the length of this battle, faster would be appreciated. This should be your top priority barring other really really important things.
For the battlers:
  • PM your teams to the ref. In case you don't feel like reading the ref instructions, this is a 3v3 singles match. Try to avoid excessive counterteaming.
  • Before every round (aka before either of you order in any given round; also do this after the OP is posted and teams are revealed), PM to me your thoughts on the situation you are in and your plans for the near and distant future. If you don't know what this is take a look at the warstory archive. Leave nothing out about what you think; include how you think the previous round went, how you are doing right now, what you're going to do next round and why, and your long-term plans. Do not curse and include excessive dumb cultural references for the sake of humor (if I see the word yolo anywhere I will personally find a mod to ban you) but don't be a robot.
  • Battler DQ is 2 Days Maximum. With the length of this battle, faster would be appreciated. This should be your top priority barring other really really important things.
Good luck!

Just... Bear in mind that the point of this battle is to improve ASB's optics to the outside community. We're trying to appeal to a competitively-minded audience. We need to demonstrate ASB's strategic depth, not its ~roleplay potential~. That will come out of new players naturally as they get attached to their teams.

This is being rebooted since I had to call the first for activity reasons. Battler applications are open for 72 hours, & then I will pick the combatants based on activity & how good they are as well as their ability to show strategic depth.

Same rules (Except Gen VI Mechanics & no Mega Evolutions), same referee (me), maybe a diff arena (idk yet).

If Maxim wants to participate in Take Two, then he will, otherwise... I guess this is take two for this warstory... Hopefully we will have reliably active users this time... -.-'

Oh, same application format as the OP as well.

Throwing my hat in for this. I think I'm qualified to be a candidate for this: I'm far from the best, but I certainly am competent. I am a candidate for the Fire gym leader, and put up a good fight against the Dark leader Lou, possibly even getting a badge. English is my first language, so that's not an issue, and I can communicate my thoughts clearly enough, but don't ask me to write a novel.

i think i have competent english skills (i wrote an asb article for the smog) and can use capital letters if i really really want to... as for the being a good battler thing, well, i won the team tourney which even though all tourneys are jokes has got to count for something, and have a 3-1 w/l as gym leader. and unlike gerard, who is fruiter than coconut-mango garnier conditioner, i'm probably better at singles than doubles so this is perfect for me. i know i can commit to keeping the dqs because i'm not a giant john, so you should totally pick me.

p.s. i had written this for the hlm http://pastebin.com/L5hNCeC9 so you can trust me to warstory this properly

I kind of want to get back into ASB, so what better way than a warstory?

You know that if you have Glacier Knight in the Warstory 2.0, it'll be berry interesting.

P.S I'd like to say i'm confident in my English abilities. Sounds like good enough qualifications to me~

Hi it's Box.

I have like no FEs but I can EC pump them in short order (i have a number of mons that are sufficiently built and an assload of UC). I'm an okay battler I Hall and ref a lot so I think I'm alright at singles and doubles to an extent. I actually qualify as a vet and I'm not exactly experienced with ASB mechanics etc either. I'm running for Water Gym but I don't think that's a qualification. I'm adequate I guess!

That said I'm good at English and writing and prose. I'm a eng lit major and I've written articles for magazines and newspapers then and again. I'm also writing my first article for the Smog which is going okay.

tl;dr i'm gud at english and i can hold my own against strong ppl

Okay time to get this show on the road.

Our battlers today are Maxim & Pwnemon. These two must send their teams to Its_A_Random ASAP.

Maxim was given automatic entry since he was in take one, & was the one that did not get DQed. I chose Pwnemon based on the fact that he fitted the bill the most. He is a proven battler well equipped for a no holes barred 3v3 FE Singles match, with a proven ability to communicate his thoughts. Pwnemon has also been consistently active with no real liability to go way over DQ or go absent without leave. Hence, I believe he is the best equipped to participate in this match.

The same conditions in smash's post on battler expectations apply.

The arena is a hard area with a volcano not too far in the distance. There is a patch of grass to one side, but it is mostly hard ground, though soft enough to dig into, & there are minor patches of dead grass here & there. A small pool of water is also present to one side near the large grass patch, enough to provide an external water source for those that need it. Rocks & stones are abundant as well. Basically, no restrictions, & once again, an alternative to the ASB Arena that is not a meadow... -.-'

That said, bad luck to Geodude6, Glacier Knight, & Box.

That is all. Time to get Take Two on the road.
