Would this be called sexism?

Well I don't know what forum to put this in so I put it in Firebot.

Recently in the forum in a gaming community I'm in there have been flames over a user's (called KomarVot) comment about female gamers' rarity. From the arguments in these threads I was wondering, out of curiosity, your stance on this. I'm probably going to get trolled to death, but... would you call this guy sexist? There's also a few flames about his age comment, too.

http://sotghome.com/forum/index.php?topic=1044.0 (basically four people's arguments on the matter.)

From the looks of the second link, yankee's an idiot and Skorm needs to learn English.

I'm to lazy to make an account to get access for the first link.

EDIT: read the 3rd page. The people that banned him are fucking retarded. I'd express surprise to find a female gamer too, even though I already know a few.

EDIT2: http://sotghome.com/forum/index.php?topic=1077.0 Idiots like that can be admins?

Well so far, it only looks like he expressed surprise over seeing a girl on a Star Wars/Gaming forum. Hell, he isn't even insulting skill level between the sexes. It's not sexist at all. Yankee's just an idiot.

Also, I think this thread would be more Congregation material, but whatever.

probably more congregation-ish, and i didn't see any sexism occuring there at all. i guess you just witnessed lesson 1 in life. people are really, really dumb.

All of those topics appear to be a bad mix of stupid internets n00bs and the complete mauling of the otherwise beautiful English language.

Oh Gods of the Internet, why can you not force someone to take a spelling and grammar test every time they log on?

Since when is English a beautiful language? It violate every rule it has and steals from everything around it.

Latin is a beautiful language.

Hopefully, the Smogon community is more mature (and has a better grasp of the English language) than that unfortunate collection of idiots.

Seriously, there was nothing offensive in any of the posts that started the whole confrontation, and although things eventually got out of hand, the "server supporters" were allowed to trample all over the site rules before any policing was done.

I have never been so disgusted with a forum than I am right now. Honestly, I thank God that I had never heard of that forum before now.

Well I don't know what forum to put this in so I put it in Firebot.

if you want serious replies, then post in congregration.
if you want ot trolling, firebot

anyway, people get too up in arms about that kinda stuff. it's gotten to the point where if you even mention something non-white male that you get called out for being racist or sexist these days. :( reminds me of the euphemism topic - everyone needs to chill out just a bit. it's weird how people can be so desensitized to shit like war and violence but if you dare say something about a black person/girl, offensive or not, expect a fight.

All people on the internets are male until proven otherwise via a voice program or pix that aren't on the first five pages of google images.

Somewhat related story here, we recently got our FIRST EVER (during my time there) non-white employee at work. This big black as black can be dude from Trinidad, his name's Marvin. Anyway, I keep very much to myself at work and don't make any effort to be nice to people. If they say hello, ask me how I am, I'll respond in kind, but otherwise...fuck 'ya. A week after he started, Marvin came and sat with me at my lunch table (I sit by myself cause I just read, and everyone else wants to make inane chit-chat.) Marvin says; "You know what mon, you are the only person here who has not gone out of their way to be polite and friendly to me, I like you. I tink everyone else just wants to prove they not racist, but I just wanna be treated like everyone else, not special!" And now we're buddies. The end.

ok so maybe this was totally unrelated, but there is a moral here somewhere.

Not unrelated at all.

He was actually tempbanned (when it should've been a warning, but he's a 'sexist' bastard) for a chat msg on our SWBF2 server, then left on his own becuase the admins weren't doing thier job.

20:47:32 : #[=SotG=KomarVot] wheres the damn admin, playing with himself again?

This was when there were rulebreakers on and no admins.

Since when is English a beautiful language? It violate every rule it has and steals from everything around it.

Latin is a beautiful language.

Which means in English you can say basically anything you want to, with any amount of emphasis or seriousness, in nearly any order you please.

English is the free-form poetry of languages.

Latin is preserved for posterity, mostly in Catholic hymns and scriptures.

Oh yeah, and a lot of English people invented words that are used as nouns in other languages, e.g. Google, Kleenex, Coca-Cola, etc.

Hey, its not our fault the English-speaking nations have, either militarily or economically, overtaken most of the world. It used to be French was the language of commerce (they called it beautiful then too), now its English. Naturally, you end up "stealing" a lot of words if you interact with every other language on earth. Even then, wouldn't taking words from French or Latin beautify the language by your definition?

But I'm not interesting in arguing the superiority of one language over another. Every langauge is different and has its own merits and annoyances. My concern is with the hellish idiocy that is chatspeak. It would be like having a Spanish Forum where everyone shortens the propositions to one letter and improvises spelling to look "smart." "l lasor s encrible!" or some crap like that.

It is the internet, not English class. Unless said grammatical errors are seriously infringing on your ability to comprehend the post, you're better off just chilling the fuck out okay?

From what I gather he wasn't being sexist, but I'm kinda reserved to judge fully without having seen the original statements.

Still, those people were being very immature about the situation and that's what ultimately lead to him quitting IMO.

Still, it's an eye-opener. There are people who really say rediculous things without taking a step back and looking at what they actually said. Maybe that's why bad grammar is linked with stupidity, because both requrie you to not examine what you're saying.

Still, we ourselves have to be careful and make sure we're not being close-minded and ignorant. The same thing could happen, albeit more likely with a different arguement. Luckily our admins are generally on top of nonsense like this (go read that leafeon thread and the massive number of stickies), but we still need to watch ourselves to prevent this from happening. We're not above being human.

Shit, i bet they will ban somebody somewhere for being sexist after asking for someone's gender... :| It's not sexist at all IMHO. There aren't many female gamers out there, so it can be pretty strange to actually met a girl in-game...

The grammatical errors were infringing on my ability to chill the fuck out.

I laughed so hard. Perfectly executed!

Also, racism and sexism is getting so ridiculous these days that you can't even acknowledge somebody's race or gender without being politically incorrect.

It takes me back to my school days. I must of been about 14 and had been in a fight with some black kid. The teacher's asking me to point out who it was out of a bunch of kids and I said "The black one over there." I got in so much fucking trouble for that simple statement that it's unbelievable.

That's all that has happened in this thread. The dude has merely acknowledged that she is a girl.

You should have said "African American," even if you knew the guy was Jamaican, Dominican, British, Cape Verdian, Peruvian, Indian [as in from India], or some other place in South America, Europe, Asia, or the Carribean. After all, it's "politically correct" to assume every dark-skinned person is from Africa.

That's the trouble with society these days, you have to put on your dumbfuck cap in order not to be called a racist/sexist/bigot/homophobe/whatever.

I digress.

This actually happened at gamespot, there was one guy who was dead sure that Resident Evil 5 had "racial undertones and implications" because you're a white guy shooting black people. When can we get over it and stop whining about how different people are?

That the person is African (because it's inconceivable that black people could come from Haiti, India, Trinidad, Dominican Republic, Brazil, Australia, or Jamaica). Nevermind that; BLACK PEOPLE ONLY COME FROM AFRICA.

Not to mention that every time you give a black person the distinction of being "African American" out of a mixed group, you're making an assumption about an entire continent; not everyone from Africa is black. I guarantee all you politically correct morons out there have never called a white person an African American.

In other news...

That isn't unrelated, that's one of the best things to ever happen.

It sparked from yankee's signature(his girlfriend)

The original post went along the lines of this:

<Komar> I am quite surprised to see a female on a gaming forum, much less a Star Wars-based one. o.O
<James> That's his GF.
<Minwu> Yankee, a girl?
<Komar> It could happen, although I thought it quite odd...
<yankee> Don't be sexist.
<Komar> Just pure numbers...
*few posts discussing the matter*
<Komar> Exactly, it's just numbers. Besides....you are 15...which I understand (since I was 15 once) can hinder ones ability to properly analyze and interpret what someone says.
<Som1> if you have problems with members of sotg and their ages you cna elave now
