What's the best way to get your name out there for SPL? Farm league? Contact managers? IRC? Do teams hold any sort of tryout, or is it just word-of-mouth?

Get on IRC and battle people. Most teams have open tryouts in their channels. A lot is word of mouth, so if you're completely unknown now you need to make yourself known in a positive way and fast.
