Yes - Close to the Edge

Classic progressive rock at its best on one of the genre's seminal albums (Yes - Close to the Edge of course).

9/10

the falcon - huffing the proverbial line of the proverbial dong -or- the blood and the frog

fucking brilliant song. you really cant expect anything less from such legendary pop punk members in a supergroup kicking ass together. better than most songs off their full length, pick it up if you like catchy poppy punkery.

Nina Nastasia and Jim White - The Day I Would Bury You

Beautiful voice, passionate lyrics, and absolutely perfect background music. Nina Nastasia is in my opinion one of the most under-rated singer-songwriters out there today, but this collaboration with Jim White, You Follow Me, has blown me away more than anything else she's done in the last decade. "The Day I Would Bury You" is a great example of her, although the whole album is most certainly worth picking up.

ttc - telephone

http://youtube.com/watch?v=5VxmRw6LmBQ

hahaha oh my fucking god, i feel so lame for listening to this. not because its bad music, by any stretch. its because its entirely in french, and i feel like a poser. : (

its just so fucking catchy, though. parisian hipster dance rap is probably the best thing ive heard in a long time. recommended to... well, anyone. i love it, and i have no idea why i do, so i could see anyone with any musical affinity feeling the same way.

also i wish i had clothes like that!!

Smoke or Fire - Melatonin

The rating at the bottom of this is going to be so incredibly biased because this was my first Smoke or Fire song and by far my favorite. The whole song is simply incredible and flows so well within the actual album.

10/10

Lisa Gerrard - Towards the Tower

I love Dead Can Dance and I love Lisa Gerrard. Unlike some artists (read: Dolores O'Riordan though I love The Cranberries) going on a solo career was a really good call as it shows this artists can do something different. The album is still based on her chanting power, but it's much darker and has a more ambient feel, abandoning part of the ethnic influences that Dead Can Dance had.

This track is a prime example of this, very simple, haunted by a dark melody, some percussion and Lisa Gerrard's chants.

Opeth - Demon of the Fall

This is probably the best track they ever did. 6 minutes of pure death metal mayhem liberally interlaced with acoustic melodies and progressive rock influences. If ever there was such a thing as "the Ultimate Opeth song" (which there isn't because everything the band has done up until now nearly instantly turned to gold), this would be close to it.

10/10

Brand New - Seventy Times 7

Off the first album, pretty average song at best. This is before they really started to find their sound on Deja Entendu, this is just another pop-punk song.

6/10

nirvana - serve the servants

a catchy riff, very nirvana-like guitar attacks right in the intro and after the chorus, and a bit of jamming make this one of my favorite nirvana songs.

10/10

Slint - Don, Aman

After listening to Spiderland while going o sleep, this song always wakes me back up after Nosferatu Man puts me to sleep. Everytime he says, "Don stepped outside", it gives me the chills. This song sounds like something that could be a theme song for Donnie Darko. Probably my second favorite on the album next to Washer.

10/10

Katatonia - July

Extremely melancholic doom metal (with clean vocals). Very, very powerful melodies as well.

9/10

KanYe West ft Mos Def- drunk and hot girls
off the new cd. amazing song tlaking about basically getting the girl drunk then having sex with them.
8/10

Natsumen - Pills to Kill Ma August

Sanders got me to get this, this is my first time listening to it. It's like a cross between the Go! Team and 65 Days of Static or something, pretty good stuff.

Tarentel - Hello! We Move Through Weather!

Sounds like drone and post-rock with a touch of ambient. It's driven by a really good drumming beat that sounds almost haunting, with some help from the guitar strumming along a bit. It's really good stuff, like Grails and Eluvium combined.

9/10

(hed) Planet Earth - Waiting to die

I think that's how you write their name? Anyway, this was the first HPE song I heard about 4 years ago, and just found it on my computer again this morning. What a little shit I was. Anyway 7/10

Blur - Song 2

This is one of those songs that you just have to listen to once in a while. Catchy and definately too short.

8.5/10

Radiohead - Exit Music (For a Film)

Depressing much? This song is incredible. Thom's vocals are at their best, especially the climactic "And now we are one in everlasting peace..."

10/10

Interpol - Slow Hands

Ever since Reading festival, the album this is from (Antics) has been permanently on in the background of more or less everything I do. But this song is definitely the highlight as far as I'm concerned.

10/10 for the NY revival.

However: can someone clear this up for me, please... End of the second verse
A) Sing away the myriad...
B) Celebrate the myriad...

I can hear both and lyrics sites lie to me.

10/10

That is a great fucking song. One of the highlights on OK Computer for sure.

Slayer - South of Heaven

This is the band that does thrash metal best. I used to not like Slayer but they've really grown on me of late, and this is one of their best songs.

9.5/10

Mogwai - Acid Food

One of their best songs on Mr Beast, which is my favorite album from them. I'm quite fond of the vocals in this song, but in my opinion Mogwai are at their best in instrumental songs.

9/10

The National - City Middle

Easily my favorite song from Alligator. When they hit the line "I think I'm like Tennessee Williams, I wait for the click, I wait but it doesn't kick in" with the background vocals going it gives me the fucking shivers. The whole song is amazing, with the imagery it evokes (in fact, the whole album is, and Boxer even more so).

I'm going to see them tomorrow night, which I am very, very excited about!

"An excellent score"/10

Animal Collective - The Purple Bottle

I think this was my first Animal Collective song, either that or Grass. Anyways, it's also one of my favorites on Feels. Loch Raven, the track prior to this one, is a lot slower and feels kind of like a break between the real songs, and as soon as I hear the drumming start up from this I feel so happy. I love almost everything about this song, from the soft yet quick piano going hand in hand with the drums and the crazy guitar picking up about halfway through. This is the definitive Animal Collective song, but a little more difficult to listen to than Grass is. Oh well, I love it.

9.5/10
