Silly Things You've Seen In Other Metagames

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/doublesou-282260124
Gimmicks, gimmicks everywhere. Of course, a successful execution of TerraCott tends to actually win games, as it does here.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/anythinggoes-282261679
Volbeat versus the world. The world leads with Chandelure. With Dark Pulse (and Shadow Ball!).

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/anythinggoes-282269188
Ash team with actual movesets on the right--well, sort of. Today I, and the Reshiram on its way to a clean sweep, learned Snorlax gets Outrage. Pikachu gets a kill and change in attempted last-mon heroics, but breaks itself Volt Tackling.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/anythinggoes-282273770
So it didn't occur to you to send Sableye in on a Drain Punch instead of, say, losing your Sharpedo and your Bisharp? Not that it mattered because pretty much everything on the right had Fighting coverage. Also, Darkrai gets caught by a surprise Vital Spirit Electivire.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/anythinggoes-282275827
So Whitney has a Scolipede now? Also, poor thing ends up locked in against a Claydol, which spins and then knocks it out before reaching the pivotal fifth turn. Also, My Baby pulling through for the win! (By timeout. Yeah, that sounds considerably less impressive.)

Stop using Will-O-Wisp.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/seasonalspoopyparty-282377229
This is a rather regular Spoopy Party battle until Turn 10 happens. She's about to KO me, and uses Trick-or-Treat, which gives me an Aqua Ring. And then...
★u: im really smart trust me
Also, it's Gothorita time! Oh, and the twist ending. Hint:

And the star of the show, messing around the opposing team, his name is JOOOHNN CENNNAAAAAAA
Spikes-stacking 'til death for nothing there's Scolipede!
Cleaning late-game, we all know... Mismagius!
Featuring the incredible Drifblim trying to Hypnosis a poisoned mon!

Battle between dsm77773 and Cyberknight98 started!
Go! Chandelure!
Cyberknight98 sent out Sigilyph!

Turn 1
★Cyberknight98: spoopy
Cyberknight98 withdrew Sigilyph!
Cyberknight98 sent out Rotom-Mow!
Chandelure used Substitute!
Chandelure put in a substitute!
Chandelure lost 24.7% of its health!
Chandelure restored a little HP using its Leftovers!

Turn 2
Cyberknight98 forfeited.
dsm77773 won the battle!

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/anythinggoes-282383382
- Protect Gyara staying in against Zapdos
- Curse / Crunch / Sleep Talk / Rest
- Hydro Pump Lugia
- Mega Beedrill hitting Primal Groudon with Drill Run... for all that 36% damage
- Eruption Primal Groudon spamming the move at low health and actually hurting stuff
- Spamming Dragon attacks on a Heatran
- Earthquake EruptTran
- Crunch / Toxic / Thunderbolt mixed Eelektross

Metronome Tackle Rattata (!) battles.

Bad sets, shitmons, me forgetting Rotom-Mow is immune to Spore...

Left:
  • Anticipation Toxicroak. Ever heard of Dry Skin?
  • Extrasensory / Zen Headbutt Bronzong.
  • Acrobatics Golbat. If it holds an Eviolite, just use Brave Bird. If it doesn't, however...
Right:
  • Focus Blast Lucario. Completely forgetting the thing Lucario is mostly known for: its Aura.
  • Power-Up Punch / Brave Bird / Heat Wave Mega Blaziken.
  • Thunder / Body Slam Jirachi. At least Thunder hits Kyogre.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/anythinggoes-282436305
Left:
  • Bulky Mamoswine set with Leftovers (it survived a Close Combat from Infernape, of all things). Unless Infernape was the one with no investment...
  • Brave Bird Blaziken #2.
  • Not really silly, but nice Choice Scarf Tyrantrum sweep.
Right:
  • Cincinno being slower than non-Scarfed Volcarona.
  • Blizzard Weavile.
  • Dedenne.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/anythinggoes-282437286
Ursaring thinks it's an Inverse Battle and spams Hammer Arm and Facade on Aegislash. Then, instead of using Earth Power, Shaymin revived the same Ursaring with Healing Wish who continued to "aim for the horn". Alas, the games aren't like the anime.

Hydro Cannon Swampert, Life Orb Ditto, and Galvantula holding a Belue Berry. Belue Berries have no effect except for being the Electric berry for Natural Gift, a move Galvantula doesn't even get.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/anythinggoes-282499674
Pyroar used Solar Beam without sun! It's super effective! It only goes downhill from there.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/monotype-282503364
Thundurus-T 6-0s (well, takes out three before inducing a ragequit). Highlights include an ineffectual Weakness Policy and left side saying "You suck" in the chat.

Ditto ever in Doubles (Imposter is random in such a case) and FULLY SPECIAL Mega Swampert (Hydro Cannon / Blizzard / Focus Blast / ???). Wow, those are really reliable moves.
Thunder / Wish / Body Slam / Protect Jirachi
I see some redundancy issues here... ALSO NO FLINCH HAX NO JIRACHI
Now seriously, STAB anyone??

Ghostceus vs. the world, featuring Truant Giratina and some very strange nicknames
In BH, Arceus is always Normal, unless it has Multitype and is holding a plate, even if a certain type is selected. I'm not really sure why that is, though, because iirc, all other mons with form differences can be used separately there.

Because Arceus's form differences require not only an item but also an ability.
Still you can use Arceus's different sprites, and it's funny to use the Ghost sprite for Normal and even funnier to use the Normal sprite for Ghost.

Concerning the first replay, I do want to say a few things.

#1. Arceus is only a different type when it holds a plate AND has Multitype.
#2. Blissey is very much outclassed by Chansey, since after Impostered, Chansey still gets the Eviolite boosts.
#3. WHY on Earth did you set up on a Pokemon which previously revealed itself to have Clear Smog? WHY?

Sorry if I sounded like a prick, but I just wanted to mention those a little.

Anyways, here's a toast to a new day (or night for those who are in another time zone)!

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/balancedhackmons-282766982
Expert Belt Toxicroak, Mantine, Cacturne the best check to a Mega TTar after Toxicroak Died to SACRED FIRE. Costarring Prankster Shuckle (you'd have hated me if I packed a Bouncer...

After I added insult to injury (or salted the wound) by boosting to +6 without reason, he didn't quit!

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/balancedhackmons-282772529
Normal Gengar, Umbreon, and the classic cliche of "Oh shit, I mispredicted turn 1, I better forfeit!"

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/balancedhackmons-282773295
Breloom, Ursaring, Mega Diancie and Kyurem B on the same team, Togekiss and Scizor.

Also InvisibleWater Deoxys-S is garbage, and that PH Ghostceus set is weird. Just for you knowing, sorry if it sounds harsh or whatever, just trying to help.

Normal Gengar isn't unviable since it can abuse a loophole to get Shadow Tag by holding a Gengarite and manually Mega Evolving, but I don't think that one carried the Mega Stone...

Baton Pass vs. Baton Pass. Still, the real highlight is...
Turn 33

亜美 used Foul Play!
It's not very effective... The opposing Clefable lost 23.4% of its health!
The opposing Clefable snapped out of confusion!

The opposing Clefable used Hidden Power!
It's super effective! 亜美's substitute faded!

亜美 restored a little HP using its Leftovers!
The opposing Clefable restored a little HP using its Leftovers!
Turn 34

亜美, come back!

Go! あずさ (Groudon)!

あずさ's Primal Reversion! It reverted to its primal form!
The sunlight turned extremely harsh!

The opposing Clefable used Hidden Power!
It's not very effective... あずさ lost 15.8% of its health!

The opposing Clefable restored a little HP using its Leftovers!

Too much love for Takane.

EDIT:
http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/anythinggoes-282866372
A bad Moody roll on my side. Also a few oddities from my opponent, such as Shock Wave + Shadow Claw Aggron and Thunder Mega Gyarados (which at least halted Hibiki's sweep).

Nothing terrible, but a rather unfortunate moment at the start where right side misunderstood how Compound Eyes worked, getting rather pissed when Galvantula whiffed a Thunder. (Considering you have roughly the same chance of whiffing a Play Rough, I would be too.) He wins anyway.

Have at it, y'all. There's just so much wrong with this one.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/anythinggoes-282891209
Sub Thunder Dragonite...aaaand Cue the Ice Beam. There's more interesting stuff, too, most notably the FEAR Nosepass playing well at first and then suddenly breaking down.

Okay, here I go.
Left:
Genesect-Chill with Reflect and Toxic.
Some Hidden Power Primal Kyogre that was NVE on Tyranitar and neutral on Primal Groudon. Well, at least it wasn't HP Fire.
Said Kyogre spamming Ancient Power and Thunder with no STAB move in sight.
Raichu, which was at least Lightning Rod. But it had Light Screen and Charge.
Heal Pulse Red Card Healer Chansey.
Using Heal Pulse on something that's at 98%.
Physical Xatu, using Sky Attack without a Power Herb. And it got the win.

Right:
Sand Force Hippowdon with Facade, which let it do something while poisoned.
Using Fire Blast while under Primordial Sea twice.
HP Electric Heatran.
Electivire ever, killing its Heatran teammate with EQ while failing to kill Raichu, and later using Thunder while Raichu was still out. Had Thunderbolt, too.
Another Primal Kyogre with both Hydro Pump and Aqua Tail.
Turn 13: The opposing Groudon used Precipice Blades! Kyogre avoided the attack! It doesn't affect Xatu...
That Groudon had Earthquake as well.

  • Victini with Imposter
  • Aegislash with Speed Boost and Precipice Blades (Nice base 50 attack...)
  • Heatran with Seed Flare and Moonblast
  • Didn't aim for the Venusaur's horn
  • Shedinja with Moonblast
  • Multiple Trick fails
  • Sturdy + Leech Seed Rattata
  • Deoxys-D and Registeel with Contrary and identical movesets
  • SABER Klink with Leech Seed (Redundant much, redundant?)
  • Simple + Cosmic Power Shuckle
  • Mega Camerupt didn't aim for the horn
  • Mega Camerupt in general
  • Deoxys-D with Contrary that also failed to aim for the horn
  • Perish Trapper Shuckle
  • FakeSpeed Weavile
  • Ragequits immediately after getting hit by Parting Shot
  • Mega Slowbro with Shell Smash and Cotton Guard
  • Mega Swampert with an identity crisis
  • Forfeited immediately after Mega Mewtwo Y was hit by Parting Shot

Did I miss anything?

I never leave a single replay, but this is thirteen turns of simply terrible. Y'all have fun now.

TEAMBUILDING
(L) Limber Ditto.
(R) Mega Blaziken -- not a bad Pokemon, but a waste of a mega slot -- with Flamethrower and Mega Kick. Its damage output against Charizard and Ditto suggests that it is not invested in either offensive stat.
(L) Non-Mega Charizard with Dragon Claw/Fire Blast/Double-Edge. Definitely investing in some bulk, but beyond that I can't say.
(R) Snorlax with Outrage and carrying Aerodactylite.
(L) Itemless Hoopa-Unbound. I can see wanting to use Magician, but it's just better to accept that Hoopa-U has a useless ability slot and let it go.
(L) Blizzard + Dazzling Gleam Mew. It uses both moves against Snorlax.

Mostly the biggest play mistakes I saw were just throwing one's entire arsenal of moves against a foe instead of calculating what will work best and switching if it's not good enough. That happens a lot, actually; a lot of new players seem unaware of the fact that they can semi-reliably predict which of their moves is the best to use without wasting turns on it.

A lot of new players also seem unaware of things like the type chart, switching in general, and the general principle that you can't repeat the same actions over and over while expecting different results (see: the numerous replays in this thread where people flail uselessly against Ghost-types), so maybe they're not quite ready for the damage calculator.
