Warstory: TheBM vs Dragontamer

I should note that my team is somewhat of a work in progress. The slot currently occupied by Garchomp has always been a test slot in my team, nothing ever seems to fit exactly. Before people yell at me for using Garchomp like this, allow me to explain. Currently, it is my "early physical wall", used to wall opponents before Walrein comes out, to absorb status that Walrein can't take, take close combats, etc. etc. Basically, my wall scout, so I know exactly what to do when the late-game stall fest comes in. Also, it sets up walrein with stealth rocks. Swampert used to occupy it, but I have nothing on my team to solve the 4x grass weakness, while I have 4 pokemon who are 2x or 4x resistant to ice. Donphan would work too, but again, it is 2x weak to grass and has horrible Sp. Def. So after calculating a few Defense Tiers for Garchomp and testing it out a bit in some other practice battles, I figure to try it in a higher risk ladder match where generally competition is a bit more serious.

That said, here is my team.

Notation note: I dislike the default log that Shoddybattle spits out, so I modified the format slightly. I also omit leftovers and hail damage when they are neutralized, all my walls are equipped with leftovers to be neutral in the hail. (but I'll leave it in when it matters)

Rules: Ladder Match, Sleep Clause, Freeze Clause, OHKO Clause, Evasion Clause, Species Clause, Strict Damage Clause
dragontamer sent out Abomasnow (lvl 100 Abomasnow ♂).
Evan :D!! sent out Weavile (lvl 100 Weavile ♀).
Weavile is exerting its pressure!
Abomasnow's Snow Warning whipped up a hailstorm!
Hail began to fall!

Normally, I'd switch in swampert, but... Garchomp has taken his slot. It is too early for me to waste Walrein's HP to a brick break. I assume a brick break, but I'm not sure if he is choiced, so Froslass is not a safe switch. Thus, I switch to my alternative fighting resist...

dragontamer switched in Tentacruel (lvl 100 Tentacruel ♂).
Weavile used Brick Break.
Tentacruel: 16% damage, 84% left

Just as planned. Now to lay the toxic spikes.

Evan :D!! switched in Mismagius (lvl 100 Mismagius ♀).
Tentacruel used Toxic Spikes.
Spikes were scattered everywhere!
Toxic Spikes were scattered around the foe's team!

Ah, Tentacruel, the electric-weak pokemon vs a special sweeper who can T-Bolt. This is a free switch to Garchomp, who can setup the stealth rocks.

dragontamer switched in Garchomp (lvl 100 Garchomp ♂).
Mismagius used Substitute.
Mismagius 25% damage, 75% left
Mismagius made a substitute!

Erm... crap. Calm Mind Mismagius. Oh well, Weavile can handle her, T-Bolt, Shadow Ball, Calm Mind and Substitute. I might as well get myself a bit more set-up and then break the sub after she calm minds.

Mismagius used Shadow Ball.
Garchomp 32% damage, 68% life
Garchomp's special defence was lowered.
Garchomp used Stealth Rock.
Pointed stones float in the air around your foe's team!

Note to self: review the switch-in rate topic so I can start factoring hax into my strategy. Oh well, it shouldn't matter now, 32% * 1.5 is less than 50% damage, so I'll break the sub and kill with weavile.

Mismagius used Shadow Ball.
A critical hit!
Garchomp 68% damage, 0% left.
dragontamer's Garchomp fainted.

Or he can crit and I'll be screwed. Oh well, two Night Slashes from Weavile will screw him over, one to break the substitute, the other for the kill. And Weavile is neutral to T-Bolt and resistant to Shadow Ball anyway, so I'm good.

dragontamer switched in Weavile (lvl 100 Weavile ♂).
Weavile is exerting its pressure!
Weavile used Night Slash.
It's super effective!
The substitute took damage for Mismagius!
Mismagius's substitute faded!
Mismagius used Hidden Power.
It's super effective! Weavile (100%, 0%)
dragontamer's Weavile fainted.

Or... my calculations have been off for several turns now. Perhaps it isn't a calm-mind Mismagius? Well, considering that it is super-effective, it must be HP Fighting. Weavile can survive Flamethrower from Scarf-Azelf, and HP is much weaker... so it HAS to be HP fighting. Meaning Froslass will die to ShadowBall, Tentacruel to T-Bolt, and everyone else to HP Fighting. All I can do is just smack it repeatedly and hope it dies, although I'm pretty sure I've lost at this point.

dragontamer: gg >_>
dragontamer switched in Tentacruel (lvl 100 Tentacruel ♂).
Mismagius used Substitute. Mismagius: (25%, 50%)
Mismagius made a substitute!
Tentacruel used Blizzard.

Mismagius's substitute faded!
-----
Mismagius used Shadow Ball.
Tentacruel 22% damage, 64% left
Tentacruel used Blizzard.
Mismagius 24% damage, 26% left

In hindsight: Use Surf next time idiot. It would have been 2-hit KO anyway, but Surf is stronger >_>.

That said, thank god it doesn't have T-Bolt. I wonder if it is even a Calm-Mind Mismagius? Well, I got this one in the bag.

Mismagius used Shadow Ball.
Tentacruel 24% damage, 40% left
Tentacruel used Blizzard.
Mismagius: 24% damage, 3% left
The hail continues to fall.
Mismagius is pelted by hail!
Mismagius lost 3% of its health.

Again, I should have surfed... relying on hail to kill is a bit iffy. One thing about hail: it goes before leftovers at the end of turn. So I really only need to do 94% damage to kill :-)

Evan :D!! switched in Toxicroak (lvl 100 Toxicroak ♀).
Toxicroak absorbed the Toxic Spikes!
Pointed stones dug into Toxicroak.
Toxicroak 6% damage, 94% left

Dear god I hate this guy. Toxicroak is seriously underrated. 9/10 it has Sucker Punch, but I fear Swords Dance above all, so I switch to Froslass to see what he is going to do.

dragontamer switched in Froslass (lvl 100 Froslass ♀).
Toxicroak used Stone Edge. It's super effective!
Froslass: 97% damage, 3% left
The hail continues to fall.
Toxicroak is pelted by hail!
Toxicroak lost 6% of its health.
Toxicroak's leftovers restored its health a little!
Toxicroak restored 6% of its health.

I'll leave out Toxicroak's leftovers from now on. But it is important to note he isn't banded, life-orbed or anything like that.

Okay, well, that sucks. A misprediction again as he uses Stone Edge. I'm running BrightPowder Froslass, so it was a coin-flip chance that it would have landed. Well, that's okay, I can bet that he is going to use sucker-punch to finish me off. So here I go...

Froslass used Spikes.
Spikes were scattered everywhere!
Spikes were scattered around the foe's team!
Toxicroak used Swords Dance.
Toxicroak's attack was sharply raised.

... Sucker Punch should fail damn it! >_> I guess he is getting greedy and goes for a swords dance. Now I'm SURE he has sucker-punch. Lemme screw him over...

Toxicroak used Sucker Punch.
But it failed!
Froslass used Destiny Bond.
Froslass is trying to take its foe with it!
The hail continues to fall.

And now... he can't do anything :-)

Froslass used Blizzard.
Toxicroak 71% damage, 23% left
Toxicroak used Swords Dance.
Toxicroak's attack was sharply raised.

Hmm, no stone edge? Maybe he doesn't want to risk it. Then again, maybe he forgot that Toxicroak is slower, or maybe he predicted another Destiny bond. Well, I'm not going to use blizzard again till I get my insurance...

Toxicroak used Sucker Punch.
Toxicroak's attack missed!
Froslass used Destiny Bond.
Froslass is trying to take its foe with it!

That's insurance for ya.

Toxicroak used Sucker Punch.
Froslass 3% damage, 0% left
dragontamer's Froslass fainted.
Froslass took Toxicroak with it!
Evan :D!!'s Toxicroak fainted.
The hail continues to fall.

Good job Froslass. Took down a dangerous opponent and got spikes set up.

Now a recap. He has 4 pokemon left, one of them weavile and the other 3 unknown. I have 3 pokemon left, one is injured Tentacruel. I decide now to sacrifice Tentacruel to see what he has, and then take it from there. Abomasnow / Walrein tend to work well together.

dragontamer switched in Tentacruel (lvl 100 Tentacruel ♂).
Evan :D!! switched in Heatran (lvl 100 Heatran ♀).
Pointed stones dug into Heatran.
Heatran 12% damage, 88% left.
Heatran was hurt by Spikes!
Heatran 12% damage, 75% left

Crap, heatran. Good thing I didn't send out Abomasnow... lets hope he isn't carrying Earth Power >_>

Heatran used Earth Power.
It's super effective!
Tentacruel 38% damage, 0% left.
dragontamer's Tentacruel fainted.
The hail continues to fall.
Heatran is pelted by hail!
Heatran 6% damage, 69% left

Damn, 2 vs 4. Well... look at that. Heatran doesn't have leftovers! No recovery from the hail. That means I have a chance to bring in...

dragontamer switched in Walrein (lvl 100 Walrein ♂).
Heatran used Earth Power.
Walrein 26% damage, 74% left.
Walrein used Substitute.
Walrein 25% damage, 49% left.
Walrein made a substitute!
The hail continues to fall.
Heatran is pelted by hail!
Heatran 6% damage, 63% left
Walrein +12%, 61% left.

The 12% is from leftovers + ice-body in the hail. Anyway, regardless of what he does, he is screwed. I can easily out-stall heatran as it doesn't have any leftovers, meaning it WILL die in the hail in less than 16 turns. So I just play it safe from here on out and protect.

Evan :D!! switched in Weavile (lvl 100 Weavile ♀).
Weavile is exerting its pressure!
Pointed stones dug into Weavile.
Weavile 25% damage, 75% left.

Weavile 12% damage, 62% left.
Walrein used Protect.
Walrein protected itself!
The hail continues to fall.
Walrein +12%, 73% left

Hmm, Weavile. No one carries taunt Weavile, so I'm fairly safe against that. I'd like to see if it can swords dance though so... two turns of stalling here.

Weavile used Brick Break.

Okay, no swords dances. I'm fairly certain I can survive against Heatran, not to mention I have surf. Anyway, I can't stall weavile because Toxicroak took my T-Spikes and Weavile is immune to hail. So I force it out.

Weavile used Brick Break.
It's super effective!
The substitute took damage for Walrein!
Walrein's substitute faded!
Walrein used Roar.
Evan :D!! switched in Tangrowth (lvl 100 Tangrowth ♀).
Pointed stones dug into Tangrowth.
Tangrowth 12% damage, 88% left.
Tangrowth was hurt by Spikes!
Tangrowth 12% damage, 75% left
The hail continues to fall.
Walrein +12% health, 85% left

So everyone has leftovers (cut out of the log, so trust me). Anyway, Tangrowth is slow, so lets see if I can get a free sub (which translates into free health). If he uses Sleep Powder, Knock-off, leech seed or Stun Spore, they'll all fail against a sub. Plus, Tangrowth is pretty slow and I'm running speed EVs. So I know I'm faster. So time for some scouting...

Walrein used Substitute.
Walrein 25% damage, 60% left
Walrein made a substitute!
Tangrowth used Power Whip.
It's super effective!
The substitute took damage for Walrein!
Walrein's substitute faded!

Walrein +12% health, 73% left

Hmm... I guess he just wants walrein to die. Well, I'll recover off the damage with Protect and go from there.

Walrein used Protect.
Walrein protected itself!
Tangrowth used Power Whip.
Tangrowth's attack missed!
The hail continues to fall.
Walrein +12% health, 85% left

Hey, he has used power whip twice. I figure he's gonna do it again. So I switch to my grass resist...

dragontamer switched in Abomasnow (lvl 100 Abomasnow ♂).
Abomasnow's Snow Warning whipped up a hailstorm!
Tangrowth used Power Whip.
It's not very effective...
Abomasnow 28% damage, 72% left
The hail continues to fall.
Abomasnow +6%, 78% left

Again, I worry about stun spore, sleep powder, etc. etc. I know Abomasnow is faster than Walrein, and Walrein is faster than Tangrowth, so Substitute is completely safe.

Evan :D!! switched in Heatran (lvl 100 Heatran ♀).

Abomasnow's potential is seriously underrated... and this next turn shows exactly why.

Abomasnow is tightening its focus!
Heatran used Fire Blast.
It's super effective!

Abomasnow's substitute faded!
Abomasnow used Focus Punch.
It's super effective!
Heatran lost 32% of its health.
Evan :D!!'s Heatran fainted.

Abomasnow +6%, 58% left

Focus Punch can handle everything :-) Not to mention, Ice / Fighting is a very nice type combination, resisted only by Froslass, Tentacruel and a few others.

Evan :D!! switched in Weavile (lvl 100 Weavile ♀).
Weavile is exerting its pressure!
Pointed stones dug into Weavile.
Weavile 25% damage, 38% left.
Weavile was hurt by Spikes!
Weavile 12% damage, 26% left.

Poor Weavile. Spikes and Stealth Rocks rape him so much... Anyway, Abomasnow can't take him on, so I'm left with...

dragontamer switched in Walrein (lvl 100 Walrein ♂).
Weavile used Brick Break.
It's super effective!
Walrein 37% damage, 48% left
The hail continues to fall.
Walrein absorbed the hail!
Walrein +12%, 60% left

This is why you keep Walrein only for the end. Interesting... he isn't Banded. So that means I've taken out Weavile at least :-)

dragontamer switched in Abomasnow (lvl 100 Abomasnow ♂).

Tangrowth used Power Whip.
It's not very effective...

Togekiss 25% damage, 75% left
dragontamer: damn
dragontamer: >_>

No, its Togekiss :-( The other fat whore. J/k, but seriously, Togekiss is pretty bulky in Sp. Def, and I only have Sp. Attacks left. And it can flinch hax me to my death if I'm not careful...

dragontamer wins!

Woah, no flinch hax, no roost, no T-Wave hax, and a critical hit finish. Sounds good to me :-)

Props:
* My core team of Abomasnow and Walrein for finishing the job.
* Managing to get at one point T-Spikes, Stealth Rocks AND Spikes on the field. Too bad Toxicroak took up the T. Spikes.
* Froslass, for surviving a dangerous tango against Toxicroak while laying down the spikes which screwed Weavile, Heatran, and Tangrowth later on.
* TheBM / Evan :D!! for having such a good game
* Phuquoph for allowing me to post this warstory Yes, it is approved.

Slops:
* Garchomp not getting anything in aside from stealth rocks. Damn, I hoped to get a good test run this time too.
* Weavile, for losing to Mismagius. Next time, I'll keep the HP Fighting possibility in mind.

You had me pegged pretty well here, dragontamer. I'm impressed. My one biggest mistake is definitely Power Whipping Abomasnow the second time. I was pretty sure you were going to go back to him and was so close to deciding on Sleep Powder that turn. Alas, but you won out in the end.

For the record, it was indeed a Calm Mind Mismagius. Fighting/Ghost providing excellent type coverage and also great for the common Weavile/Tyranitar switch ins even when I have a sub. This team's biggest problem is residual damage like spikes and stealth rock. I really need to add a spinner!

This was a really good battle and the writeup did a good job!

Loved the story. You might not like this suggestion too much (for your Garchomp "early wall" slot), but for what you want it to do, it might work, Calm/careful Meganium with light screen/leech seed/counter/whatever, it resists ground grass and electric, is pretty bulky and might work for you. It can also get Aromatherapy or Safeguard which would help you get in Walrein or get rid of it's status, and it's much faster than Tangrowth.

Just a suggestion, you might look into it.

Maganium seems nice, but the last thing my team needs is another fire weak >_>

Thanks for the offer though, I'll look into it in my other teams.

Hey Dragontamer, I had an Abomasnow the same of yours bred after I read your last hail war story, and added it to my thread yesterday - check it out!

Nice story.

I'm fairly sure I played you a few days ago on shoddy, Dragontamer. Same team as the one you used in the story, except you were using Swampert instead of Garchomp iirc. Thankfully Walrein didn't get set up properly! Nevertheless, that match was the reason I added tauntdos to my team!

You should note that the standard mismagius carries sub/cm/sb/hp fighting for type coverage. Running Tbolt over hp fighting would really only be for gyarados and it would lose its type coverage.

loved the story it was a really interesting battle thanks for posting this DT :D In all of your battles(the one's made into warstories)Walrein always impresses me GL in your future battles

This is great. I'm trying to build a hail team and this gave me alot of ideas. Excellent battle, i love warstories like this.

Great warstory, and it gives people insight into how Stallrein truly works. Also (well I already said this when we battled) I love the innovative Garchomp set as well and I hope it does well in future battles.

You have problems with the ever-present Sandstream, but I'm sure you knew that already.

EDIT: Why not Gliscor instead of Garchomp?

Because it's a Wish Pass version since my team otherwise has no method of dealing with residual damage, viper.

You have problems with the ever-present Sandstream, but I'm sure you knew that already.

EDIT: Why not Gliscor instead of Garchomp?

Gliscor is not a clear T-Tar counter, with CB Stone Edge hurting it quite a lot. On the other hand, T-Tar is forced to crunch on Garchomp, while it risks earthquakes from a 130 base atk pokemon.

Basically, I'm pretty sure Garchomp would help me out in a sandstorm more. Not to mention, Tentacruel is pretty good on the Sp. Def side, but unlike Blissey he isn't a global Sp. Wall. Garchomp's significantly higher Sp. Def helps me out... IE: if Mismagius didn't crit AND get a Sp. Def down this match >_> Garchomp would have easily broken the sub, and weavile would have forced her out and killed with pursuit.

Gliscor probably couldn't take two shadowballs period.

Now, the strange thing about sandstorm is this: I have 6 pokemon, 5 of them carry either surf, blizzard or ice punch. Surf alone is dangerous to entire sandstream teams (and Walrein can tango T-Tar 1v1 if Toxic Spikes were layed down, even in a sandstream. Don't underestimate sub/protect, and super-effective surf) Abomasnow carries blizzard / Focus Punch which takes care of steels, grounds, and rock pokemon. Tentacruel may be weak to ground, but it is smacking rocks/grounds with surf. Garchomp carries flamethrower and earthquake for rocks/steels, froslass's spikes are generally superior against ground/steel pokemon while carrying Blizzard / T-Bolt, hitting grounds for STAB super-effective and kills skarm. Weavile revenge kills in sandstream teams just about everything, with ice punch for grounds, and brick break for steels.

Sandstream vs Hail is very fun actually, because the advantage of teams swings so heavily as hail / sandstorm comes up and down, and both types tend to be super-effective against each other entirely. However, in the end, it becomes a stall match as Skarm or Walrein or whatever out stalls the other due to hail / sandstorm.

Sandstream vs Snow Warning is all about the start and getting your weather effect in last. Then, it is about walling the opponent for the rest of the match... because chances are, his team is also a stall team.

Ah, both of you were very nice, but you topped him in the end... Stallrein is a beast. Ever since my Breloom took yours down, I've been using it ever since as a precaution. Before, I got outstalled by Stallrein with SpecsLucario... :(
Before I remembered you had hail, I was going to suggest Brightpowder on your Garchomp. XD However, if you ever make a sand team.. BrightChomp could serve you well.
BTW, what is the set that you use on Garchomp, currently? I've been looking in into his defences and saw he has better stats than Swampert. =O So, please?

Breloom >_> One of the pokemon that made me explicitly start using Garchomp over Swampert. No 4x weak to seed bomb, and can still hold more than decent defenses while running speed above Breloom to scare it off.

Speed keeps the breloom away... though people are starting to realize that BP Agility on breloom is a bit powerful >_>

Yeah, that was another thing I noticed. Higher attack, defense, speed, and nearly equal Sp. Def. I'm running a standard wall EV spread, Impish with enough speed to outrun +Speed Smeargle (another guy who rapes slow teams).

For attacks, double-stab with E-Quake and Dragon Claw, Flamethrower for Bugs (Garchomp is my only steel/bug counter) and Stealth rocks. Essentially plays like a swampert. Stone Edge would be nice, but I can't risk it. Earthquake + Flamethrower beats skarm anyway if I learn to predict.

Lol, why am I talking about Garchomp? It did nothing in this battle >_>

Celebiiiiiiiiiiii

it'll help your team alot!

Would it be craziness to suggest Heatran as someone who resists Grass, eats Fire, can SR, and is generally bulky?...

Anyway, good fight.

Would it be craziness to suggest Heatran as someone who resists Grass, eats Fire, can SR, and is generally bulky?...

Anyway, good fight.
Uhhh... He just said he has a Breloom weak. FP to the gut, Heatran is dead. It will usually be behind a Sub by the time Heatran comes in, and will either FP or FP next turn. Bye bye Heatran.
Meh. Garchomp is a pokemon not yet fully explored.
A lot of surprises are coming from him. ScarfChomp, Chain Chomp, BrightChomp...
Well, you depend on Walrein a lot. Try not to make that a fault.
