Super Paper Mario OR Super Mario Galaxy?

As a complete newbie to the Mario games (except the SNES/GBC/GBA ones) I don't know which title to choose for this christmas. Someone is probably gonna say that you can't compare these two because they're different genres or whatever, but I'd be happy if I got user input from players around here.

EDIT: also, do you think I can manage with the wiimote or should I get a classic controller? I don't want to spend much more money on controllers (I'm already getting an extra nunchuck and an extra wiimote via Wii Play) but if it's a gigantic difference, i will!

Super Mario Galaxy. It's different from Super Paper Mario in that Super Mario Galaxy is awesome while Super Paper Mario is a pile of horse shit.

Super Paper Mario is and was fun for me. BUt SMG is by far the best MArio game I've every played. It's awesome and is fun playing through multiple times, I wish I could say the smae for SPM.

Buy SPM it's good but with the platformer and RPG elements mashed together the game takes serious compromises in both genres. But SPM is funny, and the plot is interesting. The 3-D and 2-D gameplay is awesome, but the game is also easy, too easy. The bosses are jokes, only the pit of 100-trials (there are 3 different kinds) are challenging, and one is killing the crap out of Samurai that all die really easily and are mostly alike -_-.

So save SPM for later, Galaxy is too awesome to ignore.

Galaxy for sure. I got it last week and pretty much played it all week, it's awesome. It's way better than sunshine and even a bit better than 64 in my opinion. The beginning is pretty easy but it gets harder in the end. You'll have hours and hours of play time in Galaxy because the last missions WILL make you want to kill somebody.

Super Paper Mario... wasn't that great, I got bored after world 5 I think and never touched it again, it's a bit short and I don't know, I'd definitely recommend Galaxy over it.

Edit: Fuck the classic controller if you don't plan on using the Virtual Console. Both Paper and Galaxy can't be played with it.

Is it true you need a partner to play SMG with? I read about that somewhere, but I guess it's set - i'm gonna go with Galaxy.

You can play with a partner but it's not necessary, player 2 can only point at the screen and collect some little star-things for you and also shoot them at enemies, but you can do the same thing with player ones remote while playing, so it's a bit gimmicky.

It's optional.

The partner can shoot stars which can stun opponents by pointing and pressing B, which Mario can also do. But the partner can freeze enemies (useful) and can make Mario jump by pointing at Mario and pressing A (annoying), but if both players make Mario jump at the same time he does a big jump (situational, the triple jump goes just as high). Player 2 also collects stars which help you progress in the game and are used to shoot enimies, but Mario can too.

Yeah freeze is the only good thing player 2 does, which can really help against Bullet Bills.

EDIT: Beaten

to be honest i was quite disappointed with both considering im a nintendo fanboy.

for wii ive got zelda, metroid prime 3, super paper mario, galaxy and guitar hero 3, and of them i'd say guitar hero is easily the best. Go figure ;\

but if its between those two, for sure galaxy.

I loved Super Paper Mario and always WILL...It's what kept the Wii useful for me those first harsh months! Mimimimimimimimmimimimimim!

Super Paper Mario is REALLY fun on the first play through, but TBH it has quite low replay value. Never played SMG.

super paper mario is not a pile of horse shit as firestorm put it, but galaxy is definitely a wiser investment. rent super paper mario, it's still fun.

Get Galaxy, it's a definite candidate for GOTY, and some say it's as good as SM64. I personally didn't like SPM as much because it wasn't true to the Paper Mario line, but that's just me.

As for the controllers thing, it depends on how often you have friends over, and how many of them there are. If you frequently have parties with tons of people, you NEED 4 wiimotes. If you occasionally have a friend or two over, 2 is fine. If you're like me where you almost never have friends over, you still need 2 for those rare occasions.

Although I'm not a fan of Galaxy, I will say that Paper Mario should be rented and not bought. I beat the game, including all of the pits, and now I will never touch it again. It was a pretty awesome game though, so you should play it.

Super Paper Mario was a good game, but I wouldn't put it on my top five list or anything like that - the later chapters really weren't as fun as the first few, and it has a really low replay value, probably one of the lowest among games I've ever had. Funny enough, the game that scores lowest on my book is another Mario RPG... this game is definitely worth a rent, but probably not a purchase, as said before

I have yet to play Galaxy actually, so I can't really comment there.

Super Mario Galaxy is the best game on the Wii. Period.

It can contend with Call of Duty 4, Gears of War, and Halo 3 as the best game of the year (which is funny as it is the only one of that group that isn't a FPS).

Super Paper Mario is fun, yes, but it isn't something you can't live without. Not having Galaxy is basically wasting your Wii.

Gears of War was last year >.>; And seriously, other than co-op it wasn't anything special imo. I still didn't like SPM. Then again, I got so bored by the end of world 1 I haven't moved on. I'll get back to it sometime.

By the way, I just realized it's not clear, but Super Mario Galaxy is an actual Mario game. Super Paper Mario is a spin-off. Galaxy is the first "real" Mario game on a console since Super Mario Sunshine. Since 1996, the only "real" Mario games we've gotten are Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, New Super Mario Bros, and Super Mario Galaxy. You aren't as behind as you think on Mario games.

I haven't finished Galaxy yet (too much school crap) but so far Metroid Prime 3 is my favourite Wii game.
