I ended up not winning with this one, but I built it to try and see how quiver dance sweepers do in this metagame. The answer is, apparently, not well; I still like the basic team structure though so I'll probably end up changing Mothim out for a better setup sweeper later. Monferno set is to dedicated stallbreak since I figured he migth brign that and i wanted a rock solid MU there.

This is the other team I made exclusively for finals. It features the hidden tech, rest + toxic Gabite, and takes advantage of how little actually checks Lycanroc in the metagame rn (Borderline broken mon imo). Bouffalant and Combusken handle grasses, Chatot and Tangela handle grounds, Tangela is the sole water check but it's all you really need. Has some issues with hazard stack but its nothing you can't handle with some plays.

I think this bat is definitely underrated rn. There are MUs where it doesnt add much, yes, but in the MUs it contributes it's incredible. The rest of the team tries to cover its weaknesses; Gabite handles rocks, Monferno takes on darks and steels, Bouff takes on most special attackers; taking on electrics is especially handy since Leafeon and Gabite aren't the most reliable. I was planning to use this vs megazard as well but ended up showing it off to him trying to win the last musharna suspect and I figured he had a good enough handle on how it played to make it not worth it.

Kinda a weird stall I built for use against finch, it's got some issues with psychic types but it's generally pretty solid, and has a p decent stall vs stall MU; could be better but you have plenty of counterplay there. Most of the metagames top threats are covered pretty solidly so unless they have MU vs you it does pretty well. bronzor+vulla is a relic of musharna tho and might be worth changing out for a different pair, maybe togetic over vulla and then swapping out granbull.

I built this team alongside DurzaOffTopic to take advantage of the fact that firebird has no switchins in this tier. It's not as strong as Chatot but it has better coverage and a better speed tier too which is nice. Typing is p handy unless you're facing Lycanroc, in which case its death but that's what Silvally + Gabite + Tangela is for. It also needs the dual defog this team provides but that honestly wasn't much of a sacrifice. I didn't actually end up using it but its a very solid team.

Crustle A- ---> A+

This guy seems to have a really good time in this meta right now. Once Crustle sets up with a White Herb he becomes a terror to shut down, so he can end up forcing panic switches from anything that can't shut it down the second he touches the field, which allows him also to be a great Rock setter.

1525623023252.pngSliggoo

I'm also surprised not to see this guy in the tiers. I'm honestly not sure where it should fall, but I feel it deserves a place in this meta. Eviolite or Choice Specs Sliggoo can both perform well in Zu. Decent Dragon types are hard to come by, and Fairy types are not all over the place with the exception of Mr. Mime respectively. Sliggoo gets immaculate coverage with Fireblast, BoltBeam, Sludgewave, and I also can't think of any other Draco Meteor users off the top of my head that are viable in Zu. I will admit it doesn't have a very good time against most of the A list, and has no recovery, but I still think it deserves a look because of the unique Gooey ability, and also Sap Sipper which can allow it to surprise an opponent with a speed drop to end a sweep, or come out on threats like Torterra (who is arguable the best pokemon in the tier) when predicting Wood Hammer. Sliggoo naturally outspeeds Torterra when both are uninvested, and will easily kill it with Ice Beam.

60+ Atk Torterra Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Sliggoo: 223-264 (65.5 - 77.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ Atk Torterra Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Sliggoo: 262-310 (77 - 91.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252+ SpA Choice Specs Sliggoo Ice Beam vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Torterra: 548-648 (139 - 164.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252 SpA Rotom-Frost Blizzard vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Sliggoo: 278-330 (81.7 - 97%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ SpA Choice Specs Sliggoo Draco Meteor vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Rotom-Frost: 243-286 (100.8 - 118.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252 SpA Mr. Mime Dazzling Gleam vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Sliggoo: 198-234 (58.2 - 68.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ SpA Choice Specs Sliggoo Sludge Wave vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Mr. Mime: 214-254 (96.8 - 114.9%) -- 81.3% chance to OHKO

With these calcs we can see the Choice Specs set seems to have a chance against Pokemon that should check it, and will put a dent, or outright Ohko anything that doesn't resist it with Draco Meteor.

+2 252 SpA Chatot Boomburst vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Assault Vest Sliggoo: 217-256 (63.8 - 75.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ SpA Sliggoo Ice Beam vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Chatot: 310-366 (105.8 - 124.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO

+2 252 SpA Black Glasses Liepard Dark Pulse vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Assault Vest Sliggoo: 144-171 (42.3 - 50.2%) -- 0.4% chance to 2HKO
252+ SpA Sliggoo Draco Meteor vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Liepard: 298-352 (110.3 - 130.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252+ Atk Torterra Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Eviolite Sliggoo: 177-208 (52 - 61.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ SpA Sliggoo Ice Beam vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Torterra: 364-432 (92.3 - 109.6%) -- 56.3% chance to OHKO after Leftovers recovery

Sliggoo can also reliably revenge kill these special threats even at plus 2 with Eviolite, and will live the EQ from max attack Torterra, and has a good chance to Ohko without Choice Specs. Sliggoo could also try and garunteed the Ohko on Torterra by running Blizzard in place of Ice Beam, but the accuracy probably makes it even less likely.

I wanted to congratulate you on spearheading this thread and all of the responsibility that comes with. I know it will be a big deal as it “earns its player base”. The OP was put together articulately, and remember - PU was originally seen as a Joke Tier but it became official and I see this becoming something official. The only question is, what tier could possibly be lower than the “Zero Tier”, Can’t use “NU” for the Negative Tier as it’s already take for the Neverused Tier, but that is largely a concern for the future, where and when new Pokémon of later generations add even more numbers to the ever crowded tiers.

I wish you well, and congrats on this new name! FU seems like an offensive title, for obvious reasons, so I think it’s understandable why you chose this name and why you won’t have to further explain the reasoning.
Well they could add a tier between PU and ZU if needed in future just like RU was added after NU

Choice scarf Servine is so good. I like it more than the defensive set because there is a pokemon no one uses that is a great special wall that outclasses this servine set. Choice scarf servine is great because switching into a parting shot is great, the opponent can't use parting shot to switch out, and once the opponent does switch out it still gets a hit and a spa. buff.
Also, the special wall i'm talking about is floette. Combined with an eviolite this thing has a monstrous 486 spd and a great movepool for stall, including toxic and protect (which almost everything has), aromatherapy/heal bell, wish, defog, substitute, synthesis, rest talk, and magic coat. Also, it's attack power isn't too low, and a moonblast can really hurt physical fighting types

I wonder why none of you are mentioning bellossom

Strength Sap OP (Bellossom) @ Grassium Z
Ability: Chlorophyll
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk

This easily sets up on almost all grass types in the Tier, and can set up on most Silvally if they dont have super effective STAB against it.
Grassium Z is nice, if you need a stronger hit against something that would otherwise revenge kill, but i find myself using Z-Strenght Sap more often, which gives you an additional defense boost and eases set up even more.

I like to pair it with something that lets it set up more easily, e.g. Encore kadabra or Silvally with Parting shot.
Nature can be changed to Timid if you dont want to Speed tie timid Rotom-F, but i like my Bellossom nice and powerful.
Feel free to use and suggest changes

I loved PU of the last generation, but it is not the same anymore this gen. ZU definitely comes a lot closer and I am enjoying the hell out of it, eventhough there are some stronger mons I am surprised to see down here for example pinsir, rotoms, torterra, poliwrath, silvally, electivire, shiftry, etc., tho, this is just a sidenote.

My actual reason to post is my ultra offensive team, heavily focused on all out attacking with atk and spa and spe, which sort of style I enjoyed in last gen PU and now enjoy again.

So, uh, I don't know if this is just because I'm garbage or not, but I just got swept by a ninjask that used Z-Sand attack to raise its evasion so I couldn't hit it. Don't know if that's something to look at or not but just wanted to bring it up.

Got swept by it too with two different teams - what's a reliable way to deal with this? Sure felt stupidly broken because of the luck factor.
Golem hard walls every Ninjask that isn't SD Z-Dig, which this isn't since it's Z-Sand Attack. Similarly, Rotom-Fan easily takes it on too. Lycanroc doesn't switch in but does easily revenge kill as long as you don't get super unlucky (Accelerock). Copycat Liepard annoys it greatly, Mawile walls it, Muk walls it, Probopass walls it, Pyukumuku stalls it out.

PS: post is complete chaos because I'm busy

Defensive Pokemon work, obviously, since they don't rely on hitting. Zmoves do not check accuracy, so that works, as does simply using an offensive tank that can eat 1-2 hits (such as bulky silvally or golem or the like, as does simply phasing it such as with roar gabite.

Tomorrow at 3:30pm gmt-4 there will be a teambuilding workshop in the ZU room hosted primarily by Durza, myself, and room auth. The purpose of the workshop is to take a look at the fundamentals for teambuilding in ZU, common cores/team compositions, and hopefully build a team by the end of it.

First off, I want to thank everyone who joined today and especially Durza, Diag, and all the voices in the chat who helped run the workshop today. It was very fun and a good learning experience for everyone involved.

The first half of the workshop focused on common team archtypes in ZU and teambuilding fundamentals, then we looked at common cores in the metagame. The latter half of the workshop included building a team around Combusken+Liepard. Full team looks like this:

The aim of the team was to have a supporting cast to Combusken and Liepard, two Pokemon who are very good at breaking down each other's checks. Liepard is able to Pursuit trap Grumpig for Combusken, whereas Combusken can break down Poliwrath, Probopass, and Torterra for Liepard. Grumpig was then added to check opposing Combusken and special attackers who threaten the core such as Mr. Mime and Rotom-Frost. The given EV spread outspeed max Speed base 65's and Taunt Toxic helps in the stall/balance matchup. Next up, Torterra is the necessary rocker for the team, also checking Lycanroc, Golem, and providing physical breaking power. The team was looking very weak to rain at this point and nothing seemed to fit as well as Poliwrath. With Poliwrath, the team is able to outplay rain and also checks to Pinsir, who threatens 3/4 members of the team thus far. Finally, Choice Scarf Frostom was added as glue and is brings necessary speed to the team. The team's weaknesses include Bouffalant, as there is no Normal-resist, offensive Grass-types such as Sawsbuck or Leafeon, and can be pressured by hazards since only Combusken has Defog.

Did anyone happen to record the workshop or do a writeup? I am very interested in the information that was provided, but was unfortunately unable to attend personally due to RL commitments.

Four small questions concerning the previous post:
• the list is perfectly exhaustive, just one FE is missing: Parasect;
• as Arena Trap has been retroactively banned from the OU, is this also the case for the ZU? Or as for Drought in RU, is it a non-transitive ban? In any case I love Trapinch (and Diglett) and it would be unfortunate to lose the most unique mon of this tier;
• Regarding the banlist, it has just Quagsire that can be removed (because passed in BL4 at the end of ORAS), but I admit that it's very cosmetic;
• and just out of curiosity, were there BL5 mons?
In any case one thing is sure: a tier where Pikachu is top tier is necessarily the best format that can offer Smogon in all its history

tumblr_static_tumblr_static_edp8gok0maoggokwwckkkk4os_640.gif

Edit: since, the first two points have been settled (and my fear has been confirmed). Farewell Trapinch I loved you (maybe you'll be playable again someday). Who knows, Arena Trap will be re-authorized in ORAS ZU

We have reached the end of May and with that we have lost our OMotM status and will soon be losing our ladder. Thank you all so much for the excellent activity in the last month! I'm very much looking forward to seeing the usage stats!

We also had our first weekly Community-Create-A-Team (which is what the workshops will be called from now on, as per Durza's suggestion to stay more in line with the other tiers) yesterday and it was a great success, thank you all!

But now it is time for something very different:

The council has decided that it's time to suspect test our lone S-rank: Rotom-Frost. The fridge has been incredibly dominating for a long time and has always walked the edge between suspect-worthy and perfectly fine, but it's about time we take a good look at it. It's Electric / Ice-typing gives it near-perfect neutral coverage with its STAB moves alone while also giving it a STAB pivoting move in Volt Switch, essentially giving it a free moveslot to run whatever it wishes for, from Trick to Pain Split to Defog, to more niche utility moves like Rain Dance and even Will-O-Wisp. It's also not slow by any means, as its 86 base Speed allows it to outrun most of our other wallbreakers and bulkier Pokemon while also giving it a perfect Speed tier for a Choice Scarf user.

It should be noted, however, that Rotom-Frost is by no means unbeatable. We've seen how common the Grumpig + Torterra defensive core is, partially because of how efficient it is at dealing with this monster, as well as other more niche Pokemon that efficiently deal with it, like Seaking and Chinchou. Thus, this suspect isn't aiming to see if we can finally find some counters for it; rather, we're aiming to discuss whether or not its STAB BoltBeam coverage is too much to deal with in teambuilding, forcing teams to look very similar to each other in order to not lose to it.

Here's how the suspect test will work:
  • Over the course of the next two weeks, 5 suspect tours will be held in the ZU room on Pokemon Showdown! The winners of these tours will gain voting rights. Council members will not be allowed to join these tours.
  • Each of the council members, listed in the first post of this thread, will obtain voting rights after making an informed post about Rotom-Frost.
  • Following the recent policy change, a simple majority (50% + 1) will be needed to send Rotom-Frost to ZUBL.
We invite all of you to post your thoughts regarding our favourite fridge in this thread and discuss with myself and the other council members on Discord and PS!

Happy playing!

PU Leader
making this post at like 2 am bc i meant to post about it before but forgot lol

i think the main issues with rotom-f are the sheer amount of 50/50s it can cause and what it does to teambuilding. you have a special wall like grumpig or lickilicky (or just any specially bulky pokemon not named muk)? they get tricked and are now pretty much useless. you think it's locked into thunderbolt / volt switch because you scouted with, like, protect? z blizzard blows something out of the water. that boltbeam coverage, its good speed tier, and decent bulk make this all the more apparent, since it can force a multitude of pokemon out with ease and cripple the opposing pokemon in one way or another (the aforementioned trick or will-o-wisp), become more difficult to revenge kill with substitute + pain split, or simply gain momentum with volt switch and punish whatever it forced in. there are even less common things it can potentially do that are almost as good as what it normally does, like pull off a choice specs set or make use of defog. and i've personally found that a lot of my teams have had almost the exact same means of dealing with it, both defensively and offensively. while this may just be a me thing, i agree with the original suspect post that it does have an impact on building that i don't like. i've even found the niche seaking on a couple of my teams, which tends to not be as useful if rotom-f (or rotom-s ig) isn't on the opposing team and feels like a wasted slot to some degree.

i'm not completely sure if i'd call it broken yet, as i know it isn't some unbeatable thing, but i just felt briefly sharing some thoughts that i've honestly been having for quite some time now.

The team is based on dual setup sweepers with Murkrow and Torterra. Both of them are highly threatening after setting up and can do so on a large variety of Pokemon. They can also break for each other quite nicely, with Murkrow most notably luring in Lycanroc and Golem for Torterra to set up on, while Torterra brings in Grass-types like Tangela and opposing Torterra for Murkrow to set up on. The rest of the team is meant to support this core with mainly a lot of momentum: between Probopass, Silvally-Fighting, and Rotom-Frost, this team is capable of forcing a lot of momentum towards its side very quickly. Probopass also traps Steel-types, which are excellent checks to Murkrow, while checking Rotom-Frost and setting Stealth Rock. Silvally-Fighting is the teams hazard removal and an effective check to Lycanroc, which is incredibly important with the offensive Torterra set we're using. Grumpig is another check to Rotom-Frost that also checks Monferno, Combusken, and to some extent Poliwrath. The Substitute + Focus Blast set is also harder to trap than most Grumpig, making us slightly more resilient against Liepard + Rotom-Frost. Lastly, our own Choice Scarf Rotom-Frost provides much needed Speed control and is a giant threat for most teams.
