Super Smash Bros. Brawl Discussion #2 (spoilers)

Building on what Calciphoce said, also try shielding against a Bob-omb that spawns right in front of you while you're charging a smash attack. What's that? You're completely screwed? Oh, sorry to hear that, I thought you could "Just shield".

Sorry guys but this is the main mentality behind any competitive game (fucking christ if you're here that means you play Pokemon competitively and understand the fucking Evasion clause and why it's there), we all want to reduce luck to the minimum so that the player with more skill wins, as they should. Yes luck can be seen as a factor and no it is impossible to compromise for everyone, but we really need to do the best we can.

Again, it should be left up to vote, but I'm going with what a lot of others are recommending and going with we turn items on low to very low, and ban broken items that spawn randomly and fuck people over.

Edit: On a lighter note I enjoyed Dedede's Final Smash. Sure it's no Dark Matter/Nightmare, but I assume we'll see that in the Subspace Emissary. I greatly enjoy watching him just stand there while the Waddle Dees just do his bidding.

I love Dedede's final smash.

But... Christ, the game is not even released yet, and you're arguing about the tournament already?, what the fuck!?, it was a great idea by Zerowing to think about a tournament; but you want to plan it all like a formal thing or something when there is a lot of time ahead.

Just what the hell...

Yeah I knew the resistance to items would be like this.

So first off let me say, Wifi battling may not even allow the adjusting of items or even stock as far as we know, but we would like to assume for now it will be just like a local match.

Secondly, this is just a purely fun tournament, theres no money on the line, you won't be embarrassed in the competitive Smash community, maybe a little bragging rights here at Smogon but really who comes to Smogon for Super Smash Bros related things (outside of this thread).

Let me give my reasoning on some of the rules.

5 stock - While yes according to the people who played Brawl at E for All agree that Brawl does seem slower than Melee, and most people can agree that 3 is too few. Now you have to remember 4 stock is there to get the large tournaments done in time, here its not a 1 day thing, you have a week deadline to battle your opponent and I'm sure a 5 stock match will not take 30 minutes, its one additional stock.

Random stage - If there is a stage like the Ice Climbers Melee stage or Super Flat World, everyone can agree those stages are no fun and can count on being banned in this tournament.

Items - I'm sure plenty of other communities will be having Brawl kick off tournaments including Smash World. And I'm also sure they plan on banning all items. Now bear with me here and hopefully you can see what I'm going for. To set this tournament apart from the ultra serious tournaments run at Smash World and other places I would like to include items to not only set this apart from the other tournaments but to get back to the simple days, when Smash was just a party game you played with your friends to have a ton of fun. Competitive Smash removes the party aspect and instead makes it very serious. I'm trying to return to those roots, remember scrambling for that one Pokeball or hiding a motion sensor bomb for your opponent to walk on? Maybe to compromise with the competitive Smash players we can include best 2 out of 3 or something similar, but I would really like to see all items (yes I said all) included. Yes letting someone get a Heart Container is a pain, but its like missing an Ice Beam vs a Garchomp you have to work around that problem and find another way to win.

Let me finish by saying, this isn't a typical Smash tournament, so the typical Smash tournament rules shouldn't apply, just a fun back to your roots party game. And yes I've played both and I know how competitive Smash works and how much more skill it involves, I just want to get as many people into this as possible, the new Smash players will have very little chance in a pure 1 on 1 match, lets give them a chance so they actually join and not be intimidated by a ton of rules.

Once again voice your complaints, I really would like to get as many people as possible on board for this tournament.

Just think at this like Pokemon. You can't just ban stuff off the bat until it has least been proved it is broken in a competitive situation, even if it seems obvious.

I'll participate, seeing as I'm most likely getting the game exactly when it comes out. I honestly don't care what the rules are. I'll be there anyway. :)

Zerowing in regards to your latest post:

5 stock: Don't mind so much, it's how I used to play with my friends anyways and if someone gets a heart container you're not completely fucked

Random stage: Thanks for allowing some stuff to be banned, sounds good

Items: Like mentioned before, I don't really care about "broken" items myself, I'm just trying to play the devil's advocate. I understand everyone's side very well, and I have to say that something as unlikely as a Bob-omb would be frustrating, but then again you mentioned that yes- this is a "for-fun" tournament. I say we just let everything go. Maybe items on low if people insist. I don't care. I just want to play everyone, and I hope this all works out.

As per request and in an attempt to keep this thread on topic, I have created another thread for just the tournement, discuss there for now on please.

Ok this is the last fucking straw. I'm now getting my Wii chipped. I'm sick and tired of being screwed over with delays, so they aren't getting any more money from me :-/

Pay extra chip money for each major system update.

How is banning items off the bat doing it before proving anything in a competitive situation? It's the same thing as the adv -> dp transition with groudon, kyorge, and mewtwo, etc, all STILL being banned. WITHOUT testing. In fact, stuff like palkia and dialga... were banned right off the bat. Why? Because it was OBVIOUS they were broken. Stuff that is obvious is banned. Period. Smash has already had experience with items, and several have already been proven broken, while the others contribute to luck. Now, stuff like stages being broken may take some play time, as they're well, new, but I would not be surprised if several stages are banned in tournies only weeks into competitive brawl.

Funny how today's update hasn't been discussed since the second post on this page...:P

Didn't really know what to expect from Dedede's FS (I'm no Kirby fanatic but I do know some things), something similar to this would have been my first guess. (Off-topic: I feel VERY deprived and depressed that I haven't played Kirby Superstar.) :'(

Anyway, Sakurai says the Waddle Dees run a lot faster than normal, but how fast exactly? My guess is somewhere faster than, say, a ray gun shot, but perhaps slower, if not the same speed as an arrow shot from Link.

All tournament discussion ---------> new thread.

I'm leery of that 'leak'. Mr. Game and Watch returning? Young Link returning?

Game and Watch returning is probable because of the Icon theory, but unless we had someone with evidence that a prima writer leaked that, it's mostly just us believing what we'd like to believe, i'm almost sure of it.

But of course if it's correct, you'll be credited i'm sure.

What's wrong with Game and Watch returning? Probably the only plausible way that Young Link could ever return is in Wind Waker form with a different moveset.

From the icon theroy, aren't there only two missing icons? The theroy could be applied to this roster with the Game and Watch symbol and Golden Sun one, as well.

Well, to be honest (and i won't go too far into character speculation), if Link had the model that's been in two games now, he could conceivably have the phantom sword/hourglass, grappling hook, hammer, etc. Conventional items the big link never used. Sounds possible to me.

I seriously doubt Geno is in brawl, he's been in what, one game? At least Lucas and Ness were main characters in a series that doesn't have many games to begin with.
