Honestly, nintendo has done better with mkds wifi (one of their first wifi games, if not the first; I don't remember exactly) than they've done with any of their recent games. I mean, they basically stripped brawl down as low as physically possible for random wifi. From the looks of things, its only time, and no stock. You can't contact people you've played with in any form whatsoever. There doesn't appear to be any real matchup system; it's all random, meaning good and bad players are equally likely to be paired against each other. You can't opt for a singles match unless you end up getting only one opponent, and items... I'm not sure I get what it was talking about the items being a lottery pick, too. I guess it uses whatever setting you've got on your game?
Meh. It's not like I actually expected anything spectacular, though. I'll probably just end up doing FC/irl matches only, same as I had initially predicted.
I was referring to the custom taunts not being able to be used in random matches. In mkds both your name and symbol are shown to your opponents, in addition to your win/loss record and number of stars. Absolutely nothing is shown about you in brawl wifi. You cannot gauge skill, and you'd never be able to tell if you've fought someone before, or look them up online to play them again.e_e Umm, first of all, look at the all the other pictures on the site. None of them are stock, they are all time matches. MKDS has random opponent search also, and absolutely no way of communicating with them either.
Stop being so pissy and whiny. Christ, if you're so into competitive no-item battle whatever, then get FCs from all your friends and battle them. Basic Brawl is just for a quick match against whoever, stop getting your panties in a knot all the time.
Seriously now.

And who cares if all the pics so far have been time matches? This is a game with multiple modes. Random online matches shouldn't be restricted to just one. "Not having to mess with menus" is just a cop out for not wanting to have multiple ways to do random matches. Is it so wrong that I want some kind of rating system and a choice in game modes for random matches? And before you say that mkds didn't have different game mode choices... the only other game mode they could have had was battle, and they were already providing multiple ways to search for opponents.
...and if one more person brings up that item thing... I'm gonna freaking lose it. Playing with items once in a freaking while isn't so bad. The reason random matches are looking to suck is that it's a "one size fits all" setting for games. You obviously misread what I was saying about the item lottery. Amongst that sea of negativity I actually had a serious question: How are they going to do an item lottery, when they never mentioned anything else about making setting changes? I hypothesized that it would pull it from your regular multiplayer rules. Nothing actually complaining about items there.
If you don't like reading my posts just ignore them. No one's forcing you.
None, really, if you wanna know the truth. You're right on pretty much everything you've said. I'm just getting really freaking sick of all these pointless updates which tell nothing interesting, and then comes along something that could have been awesome, but ends up being just as fail as every other attempt nintendo has tried at wifi against people not in your LOL FRIEND LIST, and then some. The fact they can't even include features they had in past games that would be not only easy to implement but would make the game more enjoyable is pretty retarded. And I'd think reducing D/Cs would be easy. Make it obvious (like say somewhere in the game even) that they count against you, and count for your opponent(s). It would thoroughly kill people trying to "protect their record," even more so I would think than having no (apparent) system at all.So I don't see what the problem here is, especially if you're a competitive player.

Firestorm said:So here's a translation of the above wall of text:
Super Smash Bros. Brawl's online mode is even worse than Mario Kart DS. This is because Mario Kart DS has all the same problems that Smash Bros. Brawl has. Because they both have the same issues, Brawl is worse.
Do you even think logically? Or have you just not played Mario Kart DS? At least Brawl offers the whole "if they drop out you can still keep playing" thing. Mario Kart DS on WiFi was friggin' horrible. With friend codes, you still couldn't choose how many players to play with, items, or communicate. You couldn't even connect half the time.
You're just bitching for the sake of bitching now. Mario Kart DS has the worst WiFi implementation of any Nintendo online multiplayer game. It's a real shame as I liked playing it competitively but the online mode was so bad that it just became a waste of time.
I don't see myself using custom taunts in friend mode, let alone random mode. So I don't see what the problem here is, especially if you're a competitive player. Name I would have liked to appear as it's cool to run into people you know (like when I found Lupo randomly in PBR). Stars had no real indication of skill whatsoever. I was 3 stars but there were plenty of great MKDS player who didn't really play the single player GP and stuff much who were just as good as me, if not better.
Brawl will almost certainly follow a "tier" system like PBR where as you play more and win more you get grouped with people in the same tier as you. This will be hidden so idiots don't disconnect to save their precious win record.
I don't see why you need to guage skill in a service which randomly pairs you up with people of similar skill. It didn't exactly help in MKDS where it was completely broken. I had 300 - 75 wins or something and I get paired up with someone who's 0-0.
Mario Kart DS hardly had multiple ways to search. You had "Regional" which is your continent, "Worldwide" which is the entire world, "Rivals" which was the same as worldwide (seriously, it never worked), and "Friends" which was a broken mess.
Again. Your arguments are because you just want to bitch and moan. I don't plan on playing random battles too much anyway.

As for mkds... I dunno. I almost always got random retards on worldwide, but when I tried rivals, I usually got other snakers. They're definitely not the same. Although friends was quite a mess, indeed. It was basically another random matchup mode except with people on your friend list... and your friends' friend lists.

I think "With Anyone" settings could fall into that category.
OH hey guys! That solves that problem!
P.S.: Don't you agree that money has a good part of anything in a lottery? I wonder if I tipped you all off on my thought.
Wi-Fi looks nice. I love the CPU replacement thing. crossing my fingers for a rating system of some degree.
Okay updates this week.. xD
Off topic but the whole Wii is regionlocked topic intrigued me: Are Nintendo DS Lites region-locked? Like US, Japan, Europe, etc? like the Wii?
Hm, I want a new character update soon. Today's update was lengthy and full of information, but still leaving us to want more..

Cool update! I just hope a character is revealed soon...
And why does everyone want this Geno character? Is he even a Nintendo character because I never heard of him...
He's a popular character from Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. Developed by Square-Enix (*Squaresoft), people think he's a third party character. Silly enough, he's not :x. Unless Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga was also developed by Square-Enix.
Good news (maybe) for Europe! Apparently SSBB was absent in the Q1 and Q2 lineup not because it's not coming out during that time, but because the release date hasn't been set. In other words SSBB could be released in Europe who knows when. Here's the link:

According to Wikipedia, Geno is a registered trademark of Square Enix. Apparently, in the credits of Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, Square Enix was credited with owning the rights to Geno.
I'm going to say this at the risk of being wrong or shot, but apparently Sakurai has said that he will (has by now) looked into Geno and what the character's about...so IF this is true, then at least he has considered Geno as a character. I dunno where I heard this, I've forgotten by now as it was several months ago.
Wouldn't be surprised if he were just an AT though...
