I think this mon is criminally underranked right now, and is a much better mega than people might think. While one might argue that you could be using Mega Zam or Mega Gyarados instead, that is all MU dependent, and one of the cool things about this format is you can run as many megas as you want with no drawback. With that in mind, I think the utility and damage output Mega Gengar offers is extremely good, having access to Thunder Wave, Hypnosis, Protect, and Disable. Not only that, but it still has its signature two STABs in this format, Shadow Ball and Sludge Bomb, meaning it doesn't really miss out on any high base power moves it had before. It can also run Thunderbolt for coverage, etc. Not to mention, it has also been extremely effective on the ladder, at least for me. If anyone else has any other thoughts on Mega Gengar, I'd be happy to hear them either in here or on the Discord.

I look at most of the Pokemon in B- and I think Alolan Dugtrio is definitely high above the rest. It has a great Steel + Ground typing, giving it key resistances to Pokemon like Melmetal and Zapdos (<- the big one). It has access to Stealth Rock and Toxic, two incredible utility moves in this meta, being able to quickly cripple down some of the most fearful Pokemon in the tier like Mew and Mega Alakazam. Speaking of Mega Alakazam, it can beat it 1v1 thanks to Sucker Punch, and if they have Substitute, you can always try and win the mind game using Earthquake, thanks to its Steel typing. Despite these positives, it is a bit frail, which is why I'm not nomming it to be higher, but is still overall a very effective mon right now.

I'd click Taunt for sure, if you can prevent Stealth Rock from going up that's always great, and Rock Slide never OHKOs and can miss.

That’s what I thought, but if the other one wins the tie and either taunts or sets up rocks, you’re probably at a greater disadvantage compared to if you’d tried rocks. I guess it’s kind of a risk/reward situation

Agreed on MGengar, it can be a real pain since Ghost is a very spammable STAB in this meta and Tbolt covers the most popular Ghost resist (Gyara, especially if you catch it before it Megas). Disable is a cool tech in this meta too with attacks generally being weaker so even something as relatively frail as MGengar has opportunities to use it.

Dugtrio definitely has its niche. ABR really got it to pull its weight. As a Steel-type in general it's outclassed by Melmetal, but it's really there for the Stealth Rock and such. When I was trying out LGPE LC, its pre-evolved form was an absolute monster.

Not sure if this is the right place for this but has the mega drain bp been buffed on showdown yet? it still shows 40, but in the actuall calcs has it been updated to 75 or whatever it is?

From what I hear, you can min-max around 70 Meltan candies per week with the provided events, so the 400 for a Melmetal should be extremely difficult to have so soon. Some lucky folks had excess Rare Candies to splurge with. Go is the only way to evolve it, too. Likely most of 'em are illegitimate.

Thanks for the quick response. It's amazing how many people have access to him. I wonder if they're susceptible to bans. Those are waters I'd like to avoid treading in.

I personally prefer Impish but Adamant is fine too. Impish is here so that your opponent has a 5% chance to 2HKO you which means you’ll usually be 3HKOed unless your opponent gets lucky.

Also to other users, if you request a viable mon or core, I’ll gladly take your request and build around it. This is to give you guys a learning experience to the metagame and it also gives me more times to explore and experiment and find ways to delve into the hidden complexity of the metagame.

I want a team with both Kabutops and Alolan Ninetales. Kabutops covers the Fire weakness of Alolatales, and Alolatales beats Alolan Eggy and Poliwrath.

Can Alolan Marowak excel at anything? Even in a lower tier battle, I can't think of what would work for him.

And it's a shame because he looks awesome and is the only Ghost not weak to psychic in this game :/

It's lack of Shadow Bone hurts a lot more than initially thought. Plus, 80 atk isn't the most impressive w/o thick club.

Plus it's speed, typing, and decently limited movepool hold it back a bit.

Does anyone have a comprehensive list of Melmetal counters? I read a bit about Slowbro but does anyone have any more information or thoughts to shed?

I'm not into generating pokemon and I don't really play Go. Chances are that I'll never have one. With that said, I'd like to build a team that can check him as much as I can.

Melmetal is pretty slow, so anyone that can inflict a burn could seriously put a dent into his effectiveness. Slowbro is bulky enough to tank a Melmetal attack and can burn him with Scald. Or just use flamethrower and cremate him.

From what I can see, the main threat is Twave and Double Iron Bash, but just be aware that ant poke you use needs to be able to tank an ice/thunder punch and EQ as well.

There are are a few ways you can deal with melmetal. I have not found an actual hard counter to it yet, though it may be for lack of trying if I'm being honest. Trying to get a burn on it with a scald mon is always nice, though remember opposing eevee should always run Swirly Swirl (or whatever the heal bell move is called). Additionally, you can try to win a speed tie vs it with your own melmetal, though its not advisable. Alolan Muk also lives 1 EQ from full and can do ~70 ish with fire blast, though that leaves you vulnerable to opposing M Zam, so be careful with that. Your best bet would probably any mon that can live one DIB and hit hard with flamethrower. Note that similar to Mega Aggron in UU, physical coverage moves against melmetal are pretty useless, I believe it takes like 17 from Muk Fire Punch.

Why is Jolly the best nature for partner Eevee? I see it being passed around a lot with no explanation.
I also see a few timids with only one special move (usually Sparkly Swirl or Glitzy Glow).
Any explanation would be appreciated.

really, it doesn't make much of a difference as Eevee's role isn't to do damage. Jolly might be preferred bc sizzly slide and sappy seed are both physical, which currently its most common set (I'm pretty sure, might be wrong).

Hey! Would love some help.

I would love to run a set with Eevee-S (maybe screen support) with M-Alakazam being the only pokemon guranteed a spot on the team. I've been getting a lot of success out of Venasaur with Sleep Powder and Melmetal but open to suggestions!

I'm going to try to prepare my competitive legitimately so Melmetal will probably be hard for me to get especially since I don't play Go enough to get one through that. Alolan Muk seems to be really reliable so I'll probably get one. I'm also thinking of M Gyarados since I hear he has some bulk and some good coverage (also my favorite pokemon, which is a bonus). I hear Eevee also can put a dent into Melmetal with Sizzly Slide. This is cool since its the only competitive ready pokemon I have currently.

The M Aggron comparison is interesting. I understand that M Charizard has some use outside of getting hurt hard by Stealth Rock. Do you know how he fares against Melmetal?
