Can anybody give me a hand real quick? I'm completely new to the competitive Pokemon scene and wanted to try to build a decent team for WiFi battles on the Switch. The thing is, I was wanting to build around some of the shinies that I've been able to find in-game (with my end goal being a full shiny team) but I'm struggling with deciding on a decent core and what additional 'mons I'd need to round out the team.

Right now, all I've got are the following: Timid Gengar (really wanting to use as a Mega), Timid Starmie, Timid Electrode, and an Adamant Arcanine.

Looking at those four, if I were to use them all, I'd have a huge weakness to Ground, and I'm pretty sure I'm lacking on walls to boot.

Do you guys have any suggestions on which of those four would be ideal to build around? And any suggestions on which 'mons would be best to round out the team? Like I said, I'm completely new to competitive Pokemon, so I really struggle with team building and balancing/covering, etc. But I'm looking to learn as much as possible!

Other potential options I was looking at include Venusaur, Zapdos, and Rhydon - but from what I've read Venusaur isn't really viable unless it's Mega, and Rhydon doesn't really help with the Ground weakness (does it?).

Any help would be greatly appreciated <3

You can build around anything, but I'd say Mega Gengar (and potentially Starmie) is your best option. Mega Gengar is really good in my opinion. If you want to combat Ground, you can put in Starmie, since the only Ground-types that outspeed it are the Dugtrios with Sucker Punch (Alolan one cannot outspeed otherwise iirc). Just be careful, since it would be an offensive check and not a defensive check, so Starmie could die. The rest of your team could probably be built around checking popular threats such as Mega Alakazam.

Awesome, thanks for the feedback! I'll focus on trying to build around Gengar, for sure, and see if I can't make Starmie work. Might look into an A-Muk for M-Alakazam and other Psychic threats, and maybe an Aerodactyl for Stealth Rocks and to switch into EQ's.

I'll think it over and when I come up with a rough draft of the team I'll run it by you guys. Thanks again!

May we have a discussion on Arcanine? I know with the lack of Extreme Speed some viability is lost, however, I have had sweeps with
Arcanine
Ability: Flash Fire
Flare Blitz
Superpower
Agility
Will-o-wisp

This set allowed me to block defensive Mew’s who use Will-o-wisp. However, the real meat and potatoes was the ability to switch in on a predicted Eevee-S Sizzly Slide. Arcanine then can return fire with a one-hit-KO Superpower. It can cripple enemy teams with an Agility. An Arcanine with Agility outspeeds M-Gengar, M-Alakazam, and Electrode. Will-o-Wisp, for me, has been used as a last cry on physical sweepers, but I’ve found it useful mainly on Gyarados or Melmetal it has no chance of killing, and too low on health to bring back out due to lowered health and Stealth Rock. It seems lower on the tier list than it should be. Granted I don’t believe it should go higher than or even ranked at B+, but there are options I think are being ignored. Thoughts?

Got a (really) rough draft of my first competitive team that I plan on using for WiFi battles.

I'm pretty much set on M-Gengar, Starmie, and Rhydon as my core, and feel pretty good about Muk to check Psychic threats. I'm not so sure about Aerodactyl and Mew, however. With Aerodactly, I have two Stealth Rock users and two Taunt users - is that overkill? Would a different 'mon and/or different moves work better here? And the Mew I have in-game has a Naughty Nature so I'm not too sure what to do with him. Would he be better off with a full on physical set?

I'm completely new to competitive Pokemon, so I'm a little in over my head. Just trying to learn as I go. I could really use some help optimizing movesets if any of you guys have suggestions for me!

Two taunt users is good for blocking rocks until very late game. Two rocks users can give you some flexibility if you lose one accidentally, but it's rarely my experience that you really need two.

For mew, you have nasty plot, but only one special attack. That special attack is also completely walled by A-Muk and M-Gyrados, two of the most common mons I see. Megahorn gives you some coverage against M-Gyra, so that's good, but A-Muk is more common.

Typically, Nasty plot+BoltBeam is good for a special mew. With a naughty nature, you don't really need a pure physical set - your special offense is right in line with neutral Starmie, for instance.

Roost/U-Turn/Will-o-wisp/Psychic (or ice beam/thunderbolt) would give you good coverage as well as allowing you to burn physical attackers (The two main threats to mew are physical) on the switch, then u-turn out to avoid being damaged.

It's definitely more casual for sure, appreciate the response though! Forgot about Mega Gyarados, definitely one I'll have to consider too. Thanks again!
Just be aware that without Eevee-S, it might be difficult to successfully get a rest off on mega-Gyara. I'd probably go with waterfall/crunch/earthquake instead, and either twave if you want some utility or facade if you're seriously worried about gyara copping status.

For an offensive team, Adamant.
Waterfall,
Superpower,
BulkUp/Ice Punch,
Hypnosis/Ice Punch.
I’d say for a more balanced team Careful.
Waterfall
Superpower/Brick Break
Ice Punch/Hypnosis
Rest
Just out of curiosity, and as someone who doesn't really have much experience using poli, why do you recommend careful? I've been running impish as a check for things like melmetal/aero, as well as my mega-Gyara counter. What does a more specially defensive set offer a team?

How exactly does Happiness work in this game? I can find scarce information on it, although it seems super important to the metagame. How does a pokemon obtain happiness and what is the easiest way to farm it? Can a pokemon gain happiness after reaching 100?

It appears that happiness is automatically set to the restricted value of 70 in Normal battles, so you don't actually need to worry about hitting that mark yourself.
Regardless, here's some more info on how happiness works.

From my personal experience, Adamant is the set to usually go. I recommended a Careful set mainly because it gives Poli the extra boost to resist its threats like Zapdos. Since Poli really has no trouble resisting the likes of physical offensive threats like Aerodactyl, Melmetal, and Gyarados, just due to its typing. An Impish set is not out of the question since it would help resist a Melmetal Thunderpunch. Ice Punch operated as a coverage move for the likes of Dragonite and Zapdos, or even A-Exeggutor; that being said you could run Bulk Up if said threats are dealt with to steamroll since Poli would be able to take hits, buff attack and defense, and rest off any damage or status. I personally run Adamant, but I thought I’d recommend the option if need be.

Is there anywhere to set up trades between LGE and LGP? Like I'm trying to find someone to trade me a careful alolan muk but being stuck with LGE means I'm screwed.

This is more of a question for the Orange Islands forum but yes there is. Not sure where though, so again ask in Orange Islands.

Once more, it seems very unlikely December's usage stats which should be out in a few days will properly support this format. Here's my custom handling of it again; everything from tennis's post last month still applies:
Side notes:
- Mega's aren't separated out like in USM OU stats. The script being used only counts what item the Pokemon is holding, not whether or not it Mega Evolved. Since multiple Pokemon commonly hold Mega Stones on a team, this means either the count would be fairly inflated or we'd end up with what we have, at the cost of not being able to properly separate some non-Mega Pokemon from their Mega.
- The Moveset file is too big to have in a post, so I'm only attaching the file. Everything else I will attach + leave in the post.
- In the Metagame list, "weatherless" teams are not at 100% even though there is no weather because the way that the stats program counts teams, just having Mega Charizard Y makes the team a "sun team".

Hey, I'm new to this metagame and havent played pokémon much in a while in general.

I'm just a fan of Gengar and would like to build a team around M-Gengar and havent found any sample one. Any help ? I'd like to use set-up mew in my team, too.

Gotta add I'm playing on cartridge, so no Melmetal for me, and hard countering it (if it's possible anyway) isn't as important as on Showdown, since I face him in not even 1/10th of my games.

Also, for Mew, I ran psychic/flamethrower and found flamethrower useless with Melmetal being almost non-existant, so I replaced it with Icebeam. Is tbolt/beam the better set to go then ?

Thx !

EDIT : also, I'm not playing Mewtwo.

This is for everyone with a neutral natured Mew:

U-Turn
Psychic
Will-O-Wisp
Roost

If there's ever a case for using a neutral nature, it's on a Pokemon with base 100 everything and mixed attacks. This moveset allows Mew to do something to every mon in the metagame.

Obviously U-Turn chips harder without -Att, but it also happens to put Timid Starmie/Zapdos (assuming Zapdos Roosted to full while Mew U-Turned) in range of Mega Aero's Rock Slide with average rolls.

Gengar's a great Mega that has very few solid answers, but doesn't have any sample teams right now because we really underrated it at the start of the meta. Hopefully we'll get a Gengar team included with the Sample Team rework. For now, I'll build an entirely new one with your requirements! The team is going to be focused on a strong offense that supports and exploits Gengar's strengths.
Bolt/Beam will probably work better for Mew, yeah. Lets you break through popular things like Starmie and Mega Gyarados better. The rest of the set, I'm guessing, is Nasty Plot and Roost.
If you're pairing a Gengar with that then a good set option could be Sludge Bomb, Shadow Ball, Thunderbolt and Will-O Wisp. Mew and Gengar have very similar defensive answers like Alolan Muk, Snorlax and Mega Gyarados so a set like this is pretty decent at burning / weakening those for a Mew sweep later on. Mew isn't taken out in one hit by either without burn, so burning them means Mew can get off three hits in a 1v1 situation. Be careful of burning Snorlax though as Facade will two hit Mew after that. You can also play the other way round and use Mew to weaken the opponent for Mega Gengar later on. The Gengar I'm recommending has a Modest Nature as things like regular Aerodactyl aren't going to be a huge threat, but if you want to slightly improve your matchup versus other Mega Gengars by speed tying with them then Timid might work well.
Those two together are pretty weak to Ghost and Dark so you'll probably want answers to those typings. I'd recommend Snorlax/Alolan Muk and Poliwrath with this build. Snorlax is preferable to Muk for not overlapping typings with Gengar and providing a status deterrent with a boosted Facade. You don't need to worry too much about being weak to Earthquake as most users of the move are free setup for Mew, and you have a Water type now.
Could be nice to have your own Stealth Rock user to weaken things into range of Mew / Gengar's attacks. Rhydon gives you an extra Mega Beedrill check as that mon can clean through this team with some of its own team support and also provides those Rocks. It also gives you another thing to scare Zapdos users which is always nice.
To finish off the team, something like Dragonite could work quite nicely. Agility Dragonite doesn't have much in the way of counters in a Melmetal-free meta, and even then it's pretty much Melmetal and Cloyster (maybe Alolan Sandslash). An offensive team like this is quite good at forcing a decent amount of damage over most of the opposing team which Dragonite can then use to 1 hit everything left. The general use of Dragonite is to save it until its your last Pokémon or close to it, set up an Agility to outspeed everything, Roost if necessary then break through with Outrage and Earthquake. Another option is Shell Smash Cloyster which really appreciates Mega Gyarados being weakened by Mew and Gengar and is more accessible, but that might make Zapdos a nuisance.

Hopefully I explained everything well enough, and hopefully the team works out! :]

Thanks a lot, definitely gonna try it out asap ! Great explanations, thx.

Not a fan of Rhydon in general tho, but it's true that I need something to stop M-Beedrill. Nidoking doesn't take any damages from him but doesn't return a lot either, soo, maybe Alolan-Dugtrio could do the trick here ? Will try him out too, as it will prolly also help me a bit with M-Zam.

Nidoking takes quite a large amount from Drill Run, and Dugtrio is completely obliterated by it. Rhydon is by far the best choice for a common Stealth Rock setter that doesn't lose to Beedrill, but if you really don't want to use it then maybe consider Sandslash which takes its hits better but is worse in several other ways.. You have answers for Mega Zam on the team regardless so I wouldn't be too panicked about that.

Hoooo, there's that, I completely forgot Drill Run, mb. Yeah, then I'll clearly go Rhydon.
Also, what is Surf for on Ronflex ? I've seen it multiple times, don't know why specifically tho.

For M-Zam, if he has DGleam, I'm kinda screwed, no ? But I feel like not too many ppl use it, Idk why.

Surf is for the mon we were just discussing!
Dazzling Gleam has no effect whatsoever on the Alakazam matchup really, Shadow Ball is scarier as it hits Mew harder but Snorlax will take anything Zam can do to it regardless.

New to this metagame. Looking to make a Gyarados-Mega centered team. I have Melmetal and Mew on my switch with the required natures. Im jus trying to learn how to build a team around a pokemon. Anyone wanna help?
