Correct grammar and spelling on the internet

What's worse than people using poor grammar is when people mock others for using proper grammar (see: lots of people against me on IRC).

I try to use proper grammar, but on the Internet I usually wont capitalize a few words, or I might not add a comma or two. I have spell check on firefox so spelling isn't a problem. I also wont bother with adding the ' in words like isnt, wasnt, etc...

Some things I really hate:

1. People who do not use any punctuation. If you want your sentence understandable then use some fucking periods.

2. People who use chat speak way too much.

Around the time I got into high school I decided that I was getting fed up with all the improper grammar and bullshit that happened on the Internet, so I decided that I would just make sure that I used proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling, except in cases where there is an informal atmosphere (eg Firebot) Bad grammar from other people doesn't really bother me too much, except when people end sentences with prepositions. I don't know why I focus so much on prepositions, I guess it's just something I picked up from various people at my school.

Does anyone else have trouble spelling grammar? I must've spelled it wrong three times while writing this post -_-

I am going to start using correct grammar then, and try to spell correctly even though I am typing fast. I do hate it when I can't understand what someone is typing like when someone was trying to tell me to that he wanted both staryu's; he said "make sure both are UT staryu's". I didn't know what he meant but I figured out he meant untouched staryu's. I will make sure to use correct grammar in the future.

It used to get to me, but not so much anymore. I don't like it, but I mean... if I disliked every person who typed like that, 99% of the girls in my life would be gone :P. It's kind of annoying if it gets to the point where you have to struggle to read it, and I really hate it when people say "sumfin" instead of "something", or simpilarly replace "th" with "f". I know a guy who does this, and it pisses me right off.

ahh. Exactly. It seems alot more prevelant among females than males. Stupid text messaging... Words work there too, but at least there you have an excuse for not wanting to hit the same button over and over again.

Glad you brought that up. I think there is a complete difference between posting on the forums and a real time chat like IRC. To me, it is pretty much unacceptable to attempt (let's face it nobody is perfect and I'm sure this paragraph has its mistakes) anything short of complete sentences with proper capitalization and spelling on a message forum. There's no need to rush when posting here so take the extra time to present your thoughts in a reasonable manner. The only time I refrain from using capitalization here on Smogon is when I'm either not being serious (like in Firebot) or only have one or two lines worth of text to post. Otherwise, this post is how I try to present myself. On the other hand, for real time chatting I only think our chat rules like "no 'u' or 'teh'" are sufficient and that capitalization and/or completeness is not necessary. It's a more casual medium to communicate in and doesn't need the complete sentence structure I'd like to see on message forums. I doubt many people speak with full sentences in real life while in an informal setting and I see IRC as no different.

if i'm in a serious debate or something i make sure i use proper grammar and punctuation. but in a normal post like this i don't really care. and i rarely ever use capitalization. it portrays the informality that i like to keep.

If I can tell what they're saying and know that they usually do use proper grammar, I could care less unless it's leet speak or incredibly idiotic typing. If someone says "o hai your kinda dumb", I wouldn't really care, but if someone said "o haizorz ur rly stpd", I might be annoyed.

Also, if you're wondering how to make yourself sound like one of the idiots mentioned in this thread, go here:

It's kinda sad that I actually know people who type like that.

I pretty much always try to use correct spelling/grammar unless I'm trying to do something funny, where correct grammar can hurt rather than help (Would "Me? I'm just a weak guy, don't stare at me." really make an amusing profile?). If other people aren't using correct grammar I generally ignore it unless it's so bad that I'm having trouble reading, or unless it's a serious discussion.

On IRC, I don't really care one way or the other.

i dont use most punctuation other than sentence ending marks and commas but i spell everything correctly and don't substitute numbers for letters or shorten words. it really agitates me when i have to read through a wall of non-biodegradable sludge (yes, poor grammar is bad for the environment) before i get to the actual context of whatever is being presented.

edit: after reading basics' post i agree that most women are exempt from this rule under two conditions.
1. they are hot and put out.
2. no fatties

not that im necessarily accusing you of such, but it bothers me when people assume that grammatical ability is directly related to intelligence, to the point where in internet arguments, the one who types properly can spout nonsense like 'Oh well, you're a n00b. Learn to type properly, then come back.' or something ridiculous like that

theres obviously a correlation between the two, but one isnt directly indicative of the other

If you are going to insult someone, you have to maintain at least a semblance of intelligence while doing so, so it is pretty necessary to not spell and look like an ass if you are going to do that! I like the reverse - when I get in arguments with people, they invariably go "you are just trying to make yourself sound better than me using big words," when my rhetoric is consistent, and I just use whatever words appeal to me at all times!

Its not so much that people use improper grammar that annoys me as it is the fact that people will get all defensive when you try to correct them about it.
I dont really mind the occasional spelling error or typo but as other people have already mentioned its the needless abbreviations of "ur" and others that really bother me.

I am a stickler for proper grammar and spelling, I believe some people don't realize hos much more intelligent someone sounds when they utilize basic grammar skills. To me, this is one of the most important factors in a first impression. I really appreciate it when people take the time to actually make their opinions and statements legible and comprehensive.

as long as it doesn't look like they are trying to use bad grammer on purpose, it is ok with me. However, on AIM or any other instant messenger, I just try to type fast.

You know what? This post just made me realize something about myself. When girls type badly or have horrible grammar, I don't mind. But when guys type improperly, I instantly lose all respect for them. Perhaps that's being a bit unfair, but that's actually the way I am with everything in life (and in games. Most of my losses on PBR are to girls because I am much more lenient when battling against them).

I must have Nidoking's Rivalry ability. D:

I stress impeccable grammar, spelling, and punctuation in my posts. For a long time after joining, I would always write in full sentences, even in Firebot. Recently I've become more lax about it (mostly because Glen's style of Firebotting is so fucking effective), but I will still capitalize all proper nouns and use correct punctuation, aside from ending sentences.

Even in #smogon, I type that way as well. I don't go as far Sonuis does with full stops and capitalizing the first word and everything, but if I'm asking a question I will use a "?"

So yeah, I do take this kinda stuff seriously. I feel it reflects on me personally, and the last impression I want to give is that I'm just another internet shmuck.

honestly I think my posting is a lot like glens, I spell everything correctly and my sentences all make sense, but I rarely capitalize shit thats not "I" or use proper apostrophes and colons and shit. Im sorry if this is pisses people off lol but I cant be arsed to say "I'm" and "can't".

im also a victim of starting off my posts with a lower case but capitalizing every other word that starts a sentence.

I do appreciate everyone elses impeccable grammar, as its easy to read, but I agree with Carl in that irc is just casual and doesnt really require "Hello, Jackal." Obi lol everyone knew which wittybot answers were you cause of the grammar aha.

To be honest, I don't care much about incorrect spelling and grammar as long as the sentence is understandable.

I'm generally quite frustrated when native English speakers don't know how to spell their own language. Being a non-native speaker myself, I almost despise the people who make simple spelling errors with words such as the good old "you're" - "your" mix-up.

I wouldn't even bother talking with a person over the internet who wouldn't be able to spell words correctly in Finnish, if they were a native speaker, that is.

Also, I found it quite funny that I actually had to double-check this post.

Yeah, I ended up switching to the regular "superman is such an ass" style of writing. I never knew if I should capitalize "I", though. :toast:
