pokemon attacks you didn't know existed until you went on serebii for one thing but found them instead

Obscure moves by definition tend to be useless since they have little to no reason to be used. Odor Sleuth you’ll see on the Poochyena line in Hoenn and maybe Growlithe in Kanto but that’s about the extent of it afaik - i’d definitely call it obscure otherwise.
 
I thought y'all were crazy talking about the TM move Bestow of course everyone knows it nope turns out it's not a TM at all and I have no idea how tf I know it exists maybe asb or something except most of you don't even know what that is


Rolling Kick: would be completely obscure if not for being in the starting learnset of the gift Hitmonlee in FRLG. Afaik only Hitmontop and lee learn it, good chance youve never seen it if you missed gen 3.
Smelling salts: known only to people who raise a Hariyama
Covet: for when you're too hipster to use Thief on your linoone
quash: you could put a gun to my head and I could never tell you what this does. And it's a tm.

gear grind because apparently klink line had a sig move lol
shock wave?
is snore used

i also didnt know about steel roller or life dew until a few weeks ago but im sure they have a use somewhere so theyre probably not as obscure

So did you all know that Smelling Salts is a move? Or "SmellingSalt" prior to XY, it's a 70BP Normal type move (upped from 60BP in XY as well) that doubles in power vs Paralyzed targets but heals the status as a tradeoff. It was introduced as a "signature" move to the Makuhita line wherein they're the only two pokemon to learn it through level-up, and other pokemon obtain it through breeding, usually fighting types and beefy physical attackers. Yeah,,,,,, considering the only line of Pokemon to get it through level-up are locked behind RSE and the move was outright removed in SwSh it's a move that I've literally never seen in-game. At least Kinesis was on a recognizable Pokemon and has gained infamy over the years

yes but only because i caught a hariyama in pokemon x lmao
 
it is only now that i remember kyub and kyuw have signature moves (freeze shock and ice burn, respectively)

honestly these moves scream "horrible" from the names to the two turn charge to the mediocre secondary effect to the fact that they werent even guaranteed hits, so i cant blame anyone who forgets that kyurem was supposed to be cool at one point for rocking 3 sig moves

I recognise and remember all of these; bestow is a funny gimmick—way more interesting than most other deliberately-useless gimmicks (usually they’re just a Splash clone nowadays). Crafty Shield was actually kinda cool in doubles, albeit not very practical, and Extrasensory saw a competitive use in just about every singles tier I’ve played.
