Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl - Release 19th Nov 2021

Maps
Visuals: Primarily DP-based, although on top of original flourishes by ILCA there are elements carried over from Platinum, including
  • Tree designs
  • The side of Rowan’s lab having a brown roof
  • Oreburgh City conveyer belt coal
  • Veilstone City floor tiles
  • Gray rocks in Celestic cave
Overall though its heavily biased in favor of ogs enough for it to get a point

Eterna Forest seems to take some inspiration from Platinum's spots of lighting, compared to DP where it looked like a regular route. It doesn't use Platinum's bushy trees though.

EDIT: Also shoutout to for the original comparison.

I do kinda wish that they had more of the elements of the HGSS Walking pokemon. Where you could talk to your pokemon and they would say different stuff depending on mon and their environment.

They've shown you can do this, iirc.

Scroll down to where it talks about walking Pokemon. There's a screenshot where there's a text box saying "Bidoof looks like it's having a lot of fun!", which more or less implies if not outright confirms that the Walking Pokemon exhibiting different behaviors from HGSS is going to appear again in BDSP.

One thing I'm really curious about if they'll allow things like Sylveon, Sirfetch'd etc. into these games or if it'll be restricted to mons that existed back in the OG Gen 4. (This also includes regional variants cause things that do have them like Grimer/Muk, Farfetch'd, and Raichu are confirmed to be in the game; Let's Go added the Alolan forms for the Kanto Pokemon and this remake is more in the lines of that)

Cause there are Pokemon flat-out impossible to obtain in the OG Sinnoh games (without the help of another game) that make appearances here like Blaziken. So its likely to have a few more Pokemon at least than just what could be obtained in the OG Sinnoh games by themselves.

If alolans/galarians are in, i'll assume they'll be trade only, swapping the original for the regional form with an npc

Also: do you guys think nancy (the girl with the haunter everstone trade, i think thats her name?) will still be around? I hope so, shes the best feature of gen 4 from sheer hilarity
Gamefreak tends to be a little tongue and cheek in their games. They put in a decent amount of references (I'm pretty sure they even referenced IGN's too much water remark?), so I wouldn't be surprised if they not only put Mindy in BDSP, but made her even worse or something by giving her an extra line calling you a dumb fuck

I like the idea I heard of her giving the Gengarite immediately after the trade, possibly with a line like "oh sorry, I meant to have it hold this rock instead."

Something I just realized, is Sylveon going to be in BDSP? I know they’re leaving it to Gen 4 and below, but it obviously evolves from Eevee who is obtainable.

…My team needs a strong fairy/special attacker lol
Even IF this happens, all regional formes have been in-game trades/gifts and all cross-gen evos have been available in all games past their debut.

Let's Go very aggressively did not have cross-gen evolutions.
BDSP isn't necessarily Let's Go but it's not not something to really ignore, especially when there's been no indication anything outside the 493 pokemon of its era are there at all.

Personally it'd still be annoying but not as eregious: we'd only be missing 6 evolutions: Sylveon, Perrserker, Mr Rime, Sirfetch'd, Cursola, Obstagoon.
And 5 of those are locked to regional forms anyway so honestly kind of hard to care as much...

English Trailer (& Main Site):
0:17: So, this right here could be evidence the maps aren't 1:1 afterall. Because it doesn't look like Route 209, Route 212, Route 205, Route 210, or any of the mountain routes with bridges. If I were to guess, I'd say this is probably part of a new layout of Route 209 near the bottom, and as you can see there's a long streak of water along the bottom not present in the original possibly meaning they added some new locations only accessible via Surfing.
0:20: ... But then again we also have locations like Floaroma Meadow where they painstakingly made sure the flowers were the exact same as they were in the original. And it's not like the flowers were positioned in a special way that they made a large image, as far as I can tell they were just randomly placed around. Like this is a prime location to do something special (like maybe let us choose what colors the flowers should be), would be disappointing if they left it as is...
0:25: Poketch:
And here's one of the features I've been waiting to see. So, without a bottom screen, what do they do? They just slap it on the top right corner, I guess that can work (I'm guessing there's probably a way to hide it if you don't want to see it). There's a way to make it bigger which darkens & blurs the overworld, so essentially it's its own screen. Also looks like we're still restricting the boys to blue and the girls to red, blue is my favorite color so alright with that though I'd imagine people with other favorite colors wouldn't mind having the option to change the casing's color. Also, ONE button, with enough space on the top to have added a SECOND button (like they did in Platinum). I'm sorry Volt-Ikazuchi, this here alone disqualifies BDSP to be considered a "masterpiece" as you keep on trying to push. I can take the Battle Frontier and Villa not being in, I can take the more cutesy art direction, I can even take there being no updated character designs... but my line is DRAWN with no second back button to the Poketch. You tried & believed, GameFreak failed you, if happens to all of us (I'm sure when Gen V remakes come out I'll do my best to stan for them with no doubt somewhere GF will mess up with them putting egg on my face).

... ANYWAY let's talk about apps. Trailer showed:
  • Digital Watch
  • Pedometer
  • An updated Pokemon List which puts the Pokemon's 3D model through a monochrome feature instead of using their menu sprites which is odd.
  • An "updated" Dowsing Machine (it being on the top right corner preserves its use thankfully, but it looks to have an extra band on the top and bottom with buttons, is that decoration or they added something new to it?)
BUT WAIT, the site also shows off:
  • Memo Pad
  • An updated Friendship Checker (like with the Pokemon List above, it too uses a filter 3D model image, the heart sprites also looked to have changed).
So with that said, looking through the the apps, I don't think there's any problem now that it'll be on the top right corner and can make it bigger which might be better for the Memo Pad, Dot Artist, and Roulete app. Hopefully they'll also include the inaccessible apps too, especially the Color Changer to change the color tint of the screen (heck, make it also the thing that changes the frame color). But there is one more thing concerning the Poketch that is of interest:

0:35: Hidden Moves:
Or also known as Bidoof/Bibarel Labor Summoner (and Staraptor as they have a union contract they must be the Fly Pokemon of Sinnoh)! GF, I was JOKING (first thing in the Page 27 tab) about Bibarel being used for every HM use!

Anyway, jokes aside, I think it's now safe to assume that HMs are fully dead. Now even in the remakes they're doing away with them, specifically BDSP having a Hidden Move app that summons I'm guessing either a Pokemon catchable on the Route or otherwise a random one that can learn a particular HM to use it instead of one of your Pokemon. Good night, HMs, of all the Moves I have used in my travels, they were the most... fundamental. *Fires Torpedo* *Pops Champaign*

0:52: Poffins: Guess I was wrong with the Poffins, they're keeping the mini-game as is instead of recycling Curry making.
1:03: Amity Square: AND with one thing they don't change they show one thing they do change, MAKE UP YOUR MIND (I can use this song cause Katy Perry is doing a collab with Pokemon)!

So, yeah Amity Square is back but now you can do a sort of LGPE Go Park thing where you have all your Pokemon out and following you around. YET, I noticed they didn't change the gatekeeper's dialogue.
  • Gatekeeper: In Amity Square, you may go for a stroll with a cute Pokemon.
  • Player: OKAY! *Sends out all their Pokemon and runs off*
  • Gatekeeper: *HEAVY SIGH* ... Or I guess you can send them all out, I get paid the same minimum wage eitherway...
Though one rules looks to be kept: Cute Pokemon. Looks like the guy with the Gyarados and Steelix STILL isn't getting his wish. For the most part the trailer and site don't show any Pokemon that weren't originally allowed... which seems kind of damning that, for yet another baffling reason, they kept the list of Pokemon allowed short. Like, fine, you don't want Gyarados and Steelix roaming around, at least allow all the small Basic Stage Pokemon.

Oh, and you can cook Poffins there too, hur-rah.

1:28: You really couldn't have put some more symbols on the sign to make it look like its was legible? Nah, just only the top line has words and a pattern of big and small squares underneath it like it was some kind of cryptogram puzzle.
2:04: Gym Puzzles: Well they reverted back to the Forest Maze for Gardenia's Gym. You know what, that's fine for that Gym, but what about Maylene's and ESPCIALLY Fantina's? Say what you want about how silly it is you have to push punching bags to knock over piles or tires and finding symbols in the dark with a flashlight, it's at least more appropriate then movable walls and math problems.

And that's it. I think I covered most of the new stuff, and if I haven't I'm sure someone will mention something I missed and I'll respond to it. So let's get to that...

I recgonized it instantly because it's baiscally the first time you can get Finneon (unless you backtrack to 205 first of course)

Bibarel continues to be best Pokemon

Let's Go Bidoof & Let's Go Bibarel when GF? "They're already making two Sinnoh-based games". They made four Unova and Alola games, didn't they?

but hey if anyone wanted to see Spear Pillar

here it is.

Eh. Actually, getting a good look at it now, when it was fully built how did it look? Those pillars look randomly placed with no structure to them.
Y'all got NOTHING to stand on anymore. Embrace greatness or be dunked on by it.

Me: No back button on the Poketch.
louisville-dunk-fail-gif.gif

And it only took 14 years :mehowth:

And they still haven't succeeded... infact they regressed.

Nah, the worst is Fantina's Gym in DP...

Oh god no. They're not bringing THAT back, are they?

Is that... doubt I'm sensing?

Without the new HM function, I'd pretty much never look at it and definitely would've hated it on the screen at all times.

But how often are you going to use HMs to make you sold on the Poketch now?

I know it's a Legends screenshot... but they referenced Darach. The dream is not dead, THE DREAM IS NOT DEAD

My man, stop. Just stop. It's over. We've seen the map. At best maybe the Frontier Brains show up in the Battle Tower as special opponents, not that the Emeralds one did in ORAS. Infact, changing it, best you can expect is Palmer using the Gen IV Frontier Brain theme.

Chatot is shown.

Hey, if they're keeping random DP things the same, maybe they'll bring back Chatter's recording mechanic... oh, wait, Switch doesn't have a "mic".

Hey just because Frontier is not a game-saving personal priority doesn't mean it wouldn't be pretty dope :p

It would be pretty dope... doesn't change it not being in. We wished for DP remakes with the Chimchar's Paw, not realizing we should have wished for a Platinum remake (cause GF it that out of touch).

They did not learn a single thing from this, right?

No. Back. Button. On. Poketch.

I'm hopeful this is pointing towards two-way communication with HOME; would be disappointed if BDSP turned out to be like LGPE in that regard.

I believe it was said somewhere that BDSP wasn't going to be used in official Pokemon tourneys, so I'm more seeing it as a one-way with HOME (one would assume that all Pokemon which appear in BDSP would then be in the regional dex for Gen IX, but GF never ceases to not learn their lesson).

would be hilarious if we get the DP Dex and an Underground Dex just for Platinum+ Pokemon and Flint still uses just 2 Fire Types because faithfulness.

As I noted they're random back-and-forth with "keep it original" and "let's update it" they just very well might.

I'm still waiting for it to be released on ORAS. Every Nintendo Direct gives me hope.

At this point just make it an mobile phone app... or add Battle Facilities to HOME so you have something to do with the Pokemon stuck in there.

…My team needs a strong fairy/special attacker lol

Togekiss.

Let's Go goes into the same pile as Other M and Age of Calamity as "games I know that exist, but shouldn't, so I forget about them."

Make room for B... and you know the rest of the joke.

It's route 218

I recgonized it instantly because it's baiscally the first time you can get Finneon (unless you backtrack to 205 first of course)

Oh, well I feel dumb. I looked on the new Sinnoh map for places where there was bridges and they're barely visible on 205 so I completely skipped over it. Oh well.

I'm gonna be mad if you can only hang out with "cute" Pokemon in Amity Square

Let me have a picnic with my Garchomp and Torterra please

Me: Do you not see all the Cute Ribbons that my Muk has!?
Gatekeeper: It would kill all the plants and make the other Pokemon sick!
Me: YOUR rules say "CUTE" Pokemon, my Muk is a MASTER CLASS CUTE Pokemon. YOU should have thought of that when you wrote the rules! Now come Muk, we have a stroll to go on.
Muk: Muuuaaahk! *As it slides along leaving a trail of toxic ooze behind it also releases poisonous gas from its mouth*

my dude, come on.

I would be as certain as can be that there will be no Battle Frontier in the game upon release. There will be a Tower because it's probably easier for them to keep in in than remove it and redesign the map, and BP is the only way to obtain a lot of those quality of life items people need to breed competitive Pokemon for the real moneymaker of online play. I'd be almost as certain that it will be the same type of Tower as Sword/Shield where it won't count streaks and will let you use whichever legendaries so as to get the maximum number of people into online play by simultaneously streamlining the BP-getting process and making the single-player aspect less engaging.

The appropriate level of Battle Frontier cope at this point is that the Arceus game comes out a couple months after BDSP, which makes it all but inevitable that a few months after Arceus there will be some BDSP DLC with some post-game episode that ties in with new lore from the Arceus game, and that might include some Frontier-like stuff. And at that point one could probably say, "yeah it kind of sucks that the precedent is now that anything beyond the bare minimum of post-game content is only going to be available as DLC, but when push comes to shove $100+ for a Pokemon game with current gen-ish graphics and some post-game single-player stuff to do is fair enough."

Battle Frontier as DLC isn't too unrealistic. I wouldn't bet a single doubloon over it, but it's certainly possible.

Yeah the point is that the chances it will be in the game that's released November (or that the $60 you spend on BDSP will eventually get you a free update with a Battle Frontier in it) are low enough as to be indistinguishable from zero. If you're hoping for a Frontier, you should be hoping for it in DLC and not even wasting your time being upset that it's not in the vanilla BDSP games, and even then I don't think it's any more likely than the options of "lol, still no" or like copy-pasting in Restricted Sparring.

I'd actually call it as a good scenario, but...

Tower is already confirmed, the Frontier doesn't happen without the Tower.

It was DLC or bust from the jump, as I have stated a while ago.

They're already moving Fantina to the 5th Gym because these kids ain't built to deal with Mismagius anyway.

Them's the breaks.

But how often are you going to use HMs to make you sold on the Poketch now?
As if you wouldn't just press A instead of opening the menu.

The Pokétch not having a back button is symbolic. It reflects Sinnoh Fans' drive to ever push forward and surpass their limits.

Pressing a back button shows regret. Regret traps you to the past with Charizards and other KANTOOOOOO pandering things that held back the franchise from greatness.

Keep pushing forward. :psysly:

Pushing forward still loops back towards the past anyway.
