Metagame SV OU Metagame Discussion v2 [Update on Post #5186]

i agree its so versatile because of its great movepool. You can run offensive, bulky, or support variants that slot into many teams. Its very good into the meta right now imo.

Notable moves it has : Gunk Shot, Sucker Punch, High Jump Kick, Low Kick, Pyro Ball, U-Turn, Will-O-Wisp, Court Change, Iron Head, Electro Ball, Zen Headbutt, Taunt, Bulk Up, Swords Dance, etc.
Electro Ball is a bad move, given that it's a Special move coming from primarily a Physical attacker.

I’ve been thinking about the fuss that happened around gren dropping to uu, and I think people are forgetting that aegislash, an Ubers Pokémon for the first two gens it was available, dropped to uubl in the shift from Gen 7 to Gen 8.
And yes, I know that its stats got nerfed a little, but gren losing pre Gen 9 protean is a similar, if not larger nerf than slash losing 10 atk and SpA, dontcha think?

aegis dropped because king's shield was significantly nerfed in addition to the base stat changes. The kings shield change made it hardly worth using anymore which nerfed the stance dance aspect of aegis. One of the biggest problems with aegis was that there was no good way to know if it was a set-up sweeper set, a mixed offensive set, or a defensive set until it was too late. The king's shield nerf and base state nerfs made defensive sets significantly worse and the offensive nerfs reduced the value of the offensive sets to managable levels.

@ zygarde shit

look right

if you’re the kind of person who thinks that cb was zygarde’s only set or whatever, then you obviously don’t know what made it so silly

just don’t talk at that point. like, you can just google “zygarde suspect test” & inform yourself

vrin is right. this thread is some weird blend of sqsa, theorymon nonsense, & suggestions that are barely worth entertaining & wouldn’t be made if the bare minimum of reading or thinking were done. can we ever actually discuss the meta, because threads in previous generations weren’t as bad as this

Not much to discuss when the current pin is on Tera, and mods aren't allowing that in this thread. It's reserved for the Tera discussion threads.

If we feel Giratina is worth having a dialogue about, then we will talk about it, but the metagame is far too turbulent to be considering drops. For now I will in fact bar discussion on it and dropping Ubers since we are not considering it at this time. However if things stabilize, we'll see.

Thank you Ausma.

In other regards, what do you all think of Meowscarada? It's in UU and been mostly left alone.
It seems like it would be significantly worse than in the prior metagame. Tons of fliers + Zamazenta to make its dominant STAB Combo more exploitable and some major new competition in the form of Samurott-H make some of its other sets like Tera Dark Black Glasses harder to justify now than before (Samurott-H kinda does the role of strong Dark-type that sets up Spikes better). It doesn't help that Dragapult seems to be running more status oriented sets now with either dual screens or Double Status, which offensive Sucker Punch Meow doesn't like. I have seen Scarf used here and there and its still decent due to good speed tier, Trick, and Protean giving it good flexibility as a revenge killer & the pokemon still matches up well vs some high tier threats like Ting-Lu, Gholdengo, Slowking-G, Samurott-H, etc. Not a bad mon imo, but is suffering some noticable setbacks making it weaker than its pre-Home showing (where it was one of the best mons around).

Pretty good against hisui rott, but else from bearing good results going against dengo and glowking/ting and the prior, I feel it doesn't do nearly as much, especially in a meta where two monblast spammers exist (one resists both stabs and other just outspeeds), tons of birds are roaming, most of the offensive meta can live a hit and obliterate it in return, tera just being tera, and finally big gambito running the tier

Maybe in a month it'll come back, dk though

Earlier someone led with Meowsc and I led with Sneasler and won with just Sneasler. Of course won't happen every time but that is what you are inviting in by leading it. Not great against the Glowking lead either

I admit I did not know about the kings shield nerf, and now this drop makes a lot more sense. I still think that, overall, slash is a lot better than gren post nerfs but I understand where you’re coming from

Trick Room
Unique Offenses/Setter

Trick Room - One of the most infamous playstyles in Pokemon due to its short time constraints + inconsistent play. However, what if I told you that, in this age of dire speed control destiny, Trick Room has some hidden, less explored options that can fit your team like a glove? This started out a while ago as a single Pokemon post but I decided - why not talk about all of the unique Pokemon I've been utilizing in the Trick Room archetype? So here we are. For those who don't know, Trick Room is a negative priority move that reverses turn order for five turns (the short and skinny - if Sonic the Hedgehog was a Pokemon, he would go from being Choice Scarf Deoxys-S to -6 Speed Paralyzed Glowking). So let's take a quick look at two unique offensive threats within Trick Room, along with a really neat Trick Room setter.

Additionally, Enamorus-Therian has a respectable defensive profile with solid 74/110/100 bulk further complemented by a typing that's immune to one of Great Tusk's STABs (Ground), quadruple resists the other STAB (Fighting), resists Dark (Crunch, Knock Off, Sucker Punch), Bug (U-Turn), and Grass (Grass Knot/Trailblaze). Hatterene is a great choice for a Trick Room Fairy special attacker - but its lack of a Sucker Punch resist (instead it's unfortunately neutral to it), lack of Earth Power/Sludge Bomb coverage, worse 57/95/103 bulk, and neutrality to Ground moves rather than an immunity means that it simply can't fulfill a lot of the same roles on Trick Room that Enamorus-Therian can. Enamorus-Therian's ability Overcoat, while not being as good as Magic Bounce, can still prevent Enamorus-Therian from being hit by Spore, Sleep Powder, or Sandstorm chip. Trick Room is where Enamorus-Therian and its bulky and slow monstrous power shine.

Crambominable is a phenomenal setup sweeper with an absolutely fantastic (and entirely unique) offensive STAB typing that nails the following OU Pokemon super effectively Amoonguss, Baxcalibur, Clodsire, Dragapult, Dragonite, Enamorus, Garchomp (4x), Garganacl, Great Tusk, Heatran, Iron Treads, Kingambit (4x), Landorus-Therian (4x), Roaring Moon (Both STABS), Samurott-Hisui, Sandy Shocks, Ting-Lu (Both STABS), Ursaluna (Both STABS), and Zapdos. Additionally, both of its STABS are boosted further by Iron Fist (allowing Drain Punch to actually help Crabominable's longevity and allowing it to utilize Protective Pads). Access to Bulk Up with Drain Punch and Ice Punch alone is fantastic but with Tera Electric STAB Thunder Punch with Iron Fist, Crabominable is now able to hit Azumarill, Corviknight, Dondozo, Pelipper (4x), Toxapex, and Volcanion for super effective damage. Tera Electric also has the benefit of cleaning up Crabominable's lackluster defensive typing - turning its former Flying and Steel weaknesses into new resistances, providing for great bait opportunities, along with a nifty new Electric resistance + newfound neutralities to former weaknesses such as Fighting, Fire, Psychic, and Fairy type attacks.

So how powerful is Crabominable, what do those super effective hits mean? For reference - Crabominable's base attack stat of 132 is a point higher than Great Tusk, two points higher than Garchomp, Iron Valiant, Sneasler, and Scizor. The frosty crab hurts - don't sleep on it. Here are some relevant calculations to show you just how hard those super-effective attacks can hurt.

Quite possibly one of the most unique Pokemon I've ever used in any competitive metagame - Rabsca is incredible for four main reasons:
  • It has the unparalleled role compression of Revival Blessing and Trick Room with Recover for additional longevity.
  • With Leppa Berry, Rabsca can revive two of your Pokemon in a single match - for example; lost your Trick Room Hatterene? Bring it back - lost your Great Tusk? Bring it back!
  • Bug/Psychic may seem like an underwhelming defensive typing, but it has specific strong qualities including resisting both of Great Tusks's STAB attacks, along with Grass and Psychic-type attacks.
  • Tera Fairy allows Rabsca to survive unexpected Dark-type attacks in a pinch, completely blank Dragon-type attacks, and gain newfound neutrality to Ghost attacks instead of a weakness.
Rabsca can keep itself healthy somewhat easily and is bulky enough to take advantage of Recover as an option. Rabsca won't be attacking most of the time, but with 120 SpA and a Quiet nature it reaches 325, which is notable enough with STAB to reach some important damage benchmarks in a pinch, along with some critical OHKOs against Pokemon like Glimmora, Great Tusk, Iron Valiant, and Sneasler.

Rabsca can deal out some damage, take some serious damage, revive up to two teammates (almost always at least one teammate), and set up Trick Room for your team. It's a unique slot that no other Pokemon has the capability of fulfilling and is more than worthy of consideration for your next Trick Room team.

So to wrap this short Trick Room post up, I thought I'd ask you all some questions!

- Have you been using Trick Room lately, have you fought against Trick Room lately?
- If the answer to the first question is yes, what are some of your favorite Pokemon to run on your Trick Room teams?
- If the answer to the second question is yes, what Pokemon have you found to be particularly hard for you to handle on opposing Trick Room teams?
- How do you feel about Double Condition Trick Room teams (for example; Hazard Stacking + TR, Weather + TR, TR Stall, etc)?

This set is conceptually cool but not optimal. The item should really be Punching Glove, since it still stacks with Iron Fist, and on such a set that has only punching moves there is no downside of a move still making contact. Additionally, the Ice STAB of choice should probably be Ice Hammer, which is substantially more powerful than Ice Punch and synergizes with Trick Room because of the speed drop. The only downside might be accuracy but 90% is really not THAT bad. Ice Punch might be still valid if you're really paranoid, but in Trick Room usually, more power = better, because you can't afford missing KOs.

But how much of a difference could Punching Glove make?

Tl;dr, just the power increase from Punching Glove is small but substantial and turns several 3HKOs in 2HKOs, and 2HKOs in 1HKOs. The power increase from Ice Punch to Ice Hammer, especially with the Glove taken into account, is enormous. Being able to cleanly OHKO Great Tusk and cleanly 2HKO physically defensive Slowking-Galar is no small feat, and with Ice Punch you need a Bulk Up boost to match what a unboosted Ice Hammer can do. And I want to reiterate that for a Pokémon like Crabominable with Drain Punch over CC, Gloves are essentially free, there are zero downsides over Pads, compared to for example Urshifu who with Gloves had to deal with the opportunity cost of moves such as CC, Aqua Jet and U-turn making contact.

As with Enamorus-Therian, nothing likes switching into Crabominable, just for a different reason this time around. If you're looking for a powerful Ice/Fighting-type Physical Trick Room attacker, look no further than our Alolan Frosty Boi.

God, anyone else remember when Crabominable came out and everyone was hyped for it as a Trick Room mon... And it did absolutely nothing? I do. Morkal, you're one crazy person. I haven't played around with TR in singles, mostly because of how little it lasts compared to weather. Used to play TR Sand in VGC Doubles back in Gen 6 though.

And I want to reiterate that for a Pokémon like Crabominable with Drain Punch over CC, Gloves are essentially free, there are zero downsides over Pads, compared to for example Urshifu who with Gloves had to deal with the opportunity cost of moves such as CC, Aqua Jet and U-turn making contact.
hard agree, punching glove is a direct upgrade over protective pads in this case (although i'm unsure whether showdown ever implemented the coding to make iron fist and punching glove stack, since a lot of people still believe it doesn't). i would also personally go with ice hammer over ice punch, especially on a trick room team—i consider 90% accuracy to be an acceptable trade-off for getting to fling a 132-power move around without suffering the drawback

Honestly; the reason I chose Ice Punch over Ice Hammer is because I've been having the absolute worst luck with accuracy checks lately (for example, a few nights ago, Ruination (also 90%) missed six times across two matches)

As for Punching Glove, I definitely need to find out whether the stacking was implemented - but I found myself getting worn down by Rocky Helmet very quickly without Protective Pads (originally I tried Expert Belt in the first variations of testing this set) which is why I found the power trade off to be acceptable

I'm definitely going to look into these changes more though and see how the results compare! Thank you for all the help and pointers!
