You can do that too. There's an option to upload a gen 4 .pkm file as a gen 5 file.
Also, whenever you download a .pkm file it does not get a ribbon no matter what.
Yeah. You upload the pokemon on the GTS after changing the WiFi settings on your DS, claim the pokemon (you need to make an account to do this, no email required), then tick the box to the left of the pokemon and click the really wide button on the bottom that says Queue selected Gen 4 pokemon for Poketransfer to Gen 5. Then simply go on the GTS in 5th gen.

Ah that. It only adds a ribbon if you download a pokemon on the same gen. Transferring does not add the ribbon.

As far as I know it mimics the transfer process by setting the locations to Poketransfer. I'm sure that the people behind it know what they're doing.
Do note that any pokemon that cannot be uploaded to the GTS have to be uploaded to pokecheck.org by .pkm files. So mostly event pokemon and most pokemon from XD/Colosseum.
