I saw the katanas right off the bat, but the skull took a while to spot. I wasn't expecting it to be so big. That's what she said.

Now in this image, the contrast between the two colors does make the character stand by itself, but it also destroys all connection between the foreground and the background. Try mixing up a little bit of blue into the background to join the two, or anything in the spectrum of blue, really. To get the spectrum of blue, in the color wheel window there should be 6 boxes labeled H, S, B, R, B, and G. Click on the choice circle by the box labeled B to get all blue colors.

And you can create a balanced image that is not centered. The flow of an image can used to weigh down one side just as well as subject. Try finding a character who has a long scarf or cape blowing in the wind. The flow of the image is the direction of the billowing scarf/cape, so move the character to a side opposite of the flow.

How's life?

When just beginning to learn your way through the art world, it is best to just go over the Elements and Principles, but then never actually attempt to abide by them. Draw/design what makes you happy and what you want to do, not what satisfies the "rules" of art. Subconsciously you will incorporate the Elements and Principles more and more, until you find yourself looking for them again to refresh your memory. When this happens view it like a level-up in a video game ;)

As for this new image, I do like it. You have a nice variation of color, though the blue flower really overpowers the character and draws attention from her. The general rule of thumb in a multiple-subject image (read: two parts that the viewer is intended to concentrate on) the two subjects balance the image. You can move the character more to the right to balance the left and right sides, or you can lower the opacity on the flower to make it less prevalent and turn it into a one-subject image.
