Why would you WANT to fight every single enemy you come across?
Cause I enjoy combat

This just isn't my style
I like metroidvanias and I like combat platformers with plenty of chaff and I love sekiro, but I'm not liking it all put together. It just feels like an inferior version of some other game I played

I haven't played either Hollow Knight game, but I have a general take that is relevant to this topic: I'm usually not moved by arguments that a game having frustrating or boring combat is fine because you can maneuver around many enemies. That's okay in something like an immersive sim or a less combat-focused RPG like Disco Elysium, where the game is expected to have a certain depth of responsiveness when the player tries non-combat solutions to problems, and outside-the-box thinking is valued over taking every fight you come across, but in something more action-focused like most Metroidvanias, I think it's a failure of design if the player feels incentivized to not take many fights, and even if it's just a matter of personal taste, I don't think that many people are going to be persuaded by the notion that the way for them to better enjoy an action game is to do less fighting.

On my Ironman run of Fire Emblem Engage, it occurred to me that that game is the only one I’ve played in the series that actually had a fair ultra hard mode. Awakening’s you had to spend the first 8 or so chapters turtling behind the pre promote, Fates Birthright just flooded the maps with enemies, Conquest gave lots of enemies random RNG skills that made your fights with them pure luck if they triggered it. Never played Lunatic Revelation (hated the base game). Three Houses Maddening mode was an absolute slog - the loop was basically lure out single or small group of enemies, then dogpile them. I love Normal and Hard three houses, but maddening was just…urgh.

Engage maddening on the other hand, the enemies were stronger but not completely OP and overall it just felt so much fairer than Three Houses’s maddening mode.

When I’ve got more money, I plan to play the whole Fire Emblem series. Anyone know of any good English translations for the games that never saw release outside Japan?

Was just playing the Link's Awakening remake.

A plague upon the house of whoever decided the Trendy Game should have shitty crane physics.

Alright… now that I’ve had my daily vent session about Pokémon Legends ZA elsewhere, now I can talk about something I actually care about more.

*ahem*

HOLY SH** WE ARE SO BACK. They played us all like a fiddle. I thought for sure the next Mario movie was going to be based off of Super Mario World with that post-credits scene in the first movie, but saying I am pleasantly surprised is a massive understatement. I’ve honestly only record saying the Pokémon Ranger series are some of, if not my favorite games ever made in the case of Guardian Signs, but the Mario Galaxy games are right up there in that discussion with them on top of just strictly being some of the best and most well-designed games I’ve ever played. But then they go even FURTHER and casually drop an expansion to the storyline like it’s nothing, announce the release date for less than a month away, and now that Donkey Kong Bananza is getting its own expansion and the anniversary of 3D Mario specifically is coming next year, and Galaxy’s own 20th anniversary coming the year after that holy crap I’m old, I’m not going to get my hopes up yet but the fact that terms actually a legitimate, non-zero chance the next 3D Mario game could be Galaxy inspired or dare I say it, just straight-up Mario Galaxy 3… just, wow.

Oh, and did I mention you can just straight-up buy Rosalina’s storybook now in real life?

In any case, this is giving me a disproportionate sense of hope that completely overshadowed the entire rest of the Direct for me. Yes, even the funny Virtual Boy announcement that feels intentionally like they’re making fun of its failure. They knew what they were doing because I can promise you no one is buying this thing and they know it. If the Galaxy games can make a comeback, I can’t help but wonder if a certain other 2010 game could too. How’s that for outrageous amounts of copium?

Virtual Boy is cool but legit one of the worst Direct's I've ever seen live.
???

I think there's plenty to be excited about, at least for me. Love the Galaxy games and I missed out on all-stars so I will most likely be picking up that two-pack. Haven't played Wonder yet so it's cool that it's getting a Switch 2 edition. FFVII Remake will presumably be pretty great (haven't played it yet so I'm excited for it on Switch 2). Super hype for Hades II releasing very soon. Big Dragon Quest guy here so getting the opportunity to play VII for the first time (reimagined) will be dope, along with I+II remake coming out in October. Hell, I'm picking of Persona 3 Reload in October too so October will be hella busy for me lol. More exciting Z-A news so I'm excited to pick that up. And a new Fire Emblem that seems to be somewhat related to Three Houses (if not a direct sequel) is really cool too!

The above are all things that I'm going to buy and play at some point. In addition, I don't think Bananza paid DLC isn't awful even if you take into account it being a $70 game at baseline. Seems like a whole new rougelike mode which should be interesting. I haven't played Metroid Prime 2 or 3 yet so I'll hold off on 4 for a long time, but that was great that that finally got a release date (of this year even!). The new Pokemon game seems like Minecraft with a Pokemon flavor which isn't my cup of tea but it'll be cool for a lot of people.

Overall I thought this was really good. As I mentioned I'm going to have an especially busy October when it comes to games lol but yeah there's plenty. Interested to hear why you think it was so bad.

Welp I guess I'm buying a switch 2 to simp for vampire Jeritza

(jokes aside the new fire emblem looks sick i might buy a switch 2 just to play it tbh, really looking forward to finally being able to play hades ii too)

Massive Fire Emblem fan so really looking forward to Fortune’s Weave. Great to see the series moving away from the standard medieval Western Europe setting, as this one is giving me Roman North Africa vibes (also heard people talk about Byzantine empire).

Apart from that, pretty meh direct imo, too many remakes. Still waiting for a new 3D Mario or Zelda or Super Smash Bros.

I can't say I'm surprised its what's next, but I don't have any interest in a Fire Emblem game that follows Three Houses. I almost dropped the series for good before getting close to playing as much of 3H as I expected. Suppose at least I don't feel I'm missing that much if I skip out on a Switch 2.

New Fire Emblem is lit. And Mario bros Wonder DLC with the Koopalings which was exactly what I wanted? Pretty awesome stuff!

Remastering Danganronpa 2 with that new game, 2+2 is weird since you could play the original game on switch already + the improvements seem a bit... fake. Still, I am excited for whatever new story / scenario they are cooking up so I might just buy it again lmao.

Ditto game looks pretty cool too honestly, I think its a pretty cool concept for a Pokemon spinoff.

A lot of the other content didn't immediately catch my interest, but I think it is pretty awesome that the switch 2 seems to be getting so many games in the next year.

CUTE YOSHI GAME HYPE

Metroid confirmed release date was needed af as well, too bad that trailer was probably the most dogshit trailer I've ever laid witness to in my life. I'm really hoping they're not just releasing it to die after a decade of development hell, but oh well, I'll still play it, so far the powers look sick. Don't know how I feel about the bike, it's kinda cool, but kinda antithetical to Metroid overall? I guess we'll see

DK DLC looks fun, will probably pick that and the Wonder DLC up at some point but I have Silksong and some other stuff like ZA to play coming up now.

Dragon quest looked awesome, I think I'm gonna start with the 2D remakes first and see if I like them before touching the Reimagined but it looked pretty cool.

Overall a pretty good Direct, lots of good stuff if a bit DLC heavy

Finally got around to the Mina the Hollower and Adventures of Elliot demos that have just been sitting on my Switch 2.

Both are very fun action RPGS! Mina is definitely more retro and a bit Dark Souls-y while Elliot was far more breezy, but both were quite fulfilling. Also, they both had fun and fast movement for top-down games lol.

Only complaint for Mina is that its Game Boy Color art style sometimes got in the way of level design clarity, but I got adjusted to it. Elliot, meanwhile, had some clunky menuing, but that'll likely be fixed by the time the game comes out next year.

Another RPG, a PVP game built on Battle Network, maybe even take Classic into 3D. Someone just needs to pitch a cool idea to a Capcom executive in a good mood.
Hey bud, got something to show ya:

So yeah, I've continued my half year of fan games and last week spend some time playing Ace Attorney fan games:

Phoenix Wright: The Jakkid Series https://www.forums.court-records.net/viewtopic.php?f=36&t=32333
Ace Attorney: Prisoners of Fate https://www.forums.court-records.net/viewtopic.php?f=36&p=1473260

Got the urge to play KOTOR for the first time after watching a Frogarchist video about it. Also since I bought it on Switch years ago and it's been sitting in my backlog. Been enjoying it a lot so far! I'm already somewhat familiar with D&D 3rd edition (if only through Pathfinder), so acclimating to the gameplay systems wasn't that hard.

Landed on Dantooine and got my Jedi class; I went Soldier/Guardian. Felt like easy combat was best for a first-timer, plus I'm sorta-kinda roleplaying as a Jedi OC my best friend and I came up with as a joke who best fits as a lightsaber combatant.

Only complaint is that Wookiepedia is an ass and probably spoiled me on Revan when I was looking up stuff for the rakghoul sidequest.
