I'm sorry I thought that I read that you could repost if someone beat you to your answer. Well I guess if someone decides to read my post they'll know the answer.
I say it's still trial and error, because you have to use trial and error to find a usable spread for breeding, but after that, you can use the same spread for every pokemon it would work with. Somehow someone just got (edit) an awesome shiny hatch, but they went total geek on how they accomplished this, and though I am a gamer mom with many interests that aren't typical for a woman, I still don't speak geek.
Well, I already know I can do the basic breeding RNG (not for shiny however), but it's very inconvenient without fast hatch or an IV viewing code. I have to save after every hatch (which takes minutes), then use rare candies to verify IVs (which takes many more minutes) and then soft reset. I may splurge on a new Action Replay. The one I have now is bricked, which means I can't upgrade drivers and since the unbricking tricks don't work on my M3 DS, I should probably just get another Action Replay that I can take back to the store immediately if it pulls the same trick on my as this old one I got from eBay.
Ah, I already got them from CABBAGE. They're cool Pokémon, I especially wanted a Jolly Mew so thanks. :)
No, I'm not ready at all. AR doesn't work for me on Gen 5 yet, and AR codes don't work for me on the M3 DS either. Plus once more I have to weed through a load of technical terms on other guides and try to understand what's what.
I'm on now and will be for a while, so let me know if you're there.

LOL, yeah, I'm used to there being problems to solve when doing an RNG the first time, which does help one stay patient on the next thing to learn. :-)
